Analyzing the Use of Plain Language in Brief Summaries on ClinicalTrials.gov

ClinicalTrials.gov is a database designed to help clinical researchers make their research publicly available. The clinical trials registered on the database each include a brief summary, which is meant to be a short description that the public can easily understand. In September 2022, ClinicalTrials.gov published a "Plain Language Checklist for Lay Brief Summaries" on their website, which identifies plain language best practices intended to help investigators craft summaries that can be readily understood by the public. This thesis assesses the impact of the checklist on the language use in the brief summaries in the year following the checklist's publication. The analysis examines 62 brief summaries for Phase III and IV clinical trials posted on ClinicalTrials.gov between September 26, 2022, and September 26, 2023. It focuses particularly on summaries associated with rheumatoid arthritis, knee replacement, and conjunctivitis to gauge how well they complied with 4 of the 19 criteria on the Plain Language Checklist: keeping sentences and paragraphs short, aiming for a 6th to 8th grade reading level, writing out acronyms on the first use, and providing both percentages and natural frequencies. It also examines rhetorical moves made in the summaries to address the use of jargon, key term definitions, headings, formatted lists, direct research questions, descriptions of study type, sentence fragments, and the placement of the purpose statement to see how these moves affected the plain language. Although the summaries tended to comply with the paragraph length guidelines, they did not comply with the sentence length, reading level, or acronym guidelines. The variation in compliance could be attributed to researchers' lack of awareness of the guidelines, lack of time to devote to creating brief summaries, or being too immersed in the field to imagine the needs of a lay audience. It could also be attributed to the National Institute of Health not enforcing the guidelines or to researchers not viewing the guidelines as being relevant.

Nurses' communication skills: an evaluation of the impact of solution-focused communication training

No / This paper describes the evaluation of a short training course in solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) skills. This evaluation examined the relevance of SFBT skills to nursing and the extent to which a short training course affected nurses¿ communication skills. Nurses¿ communication skills have been criticized for many years, as has the training in communication skills that nurses receive. The absence of a coherent theoretical or practical framework for communication skills training led us to consider the utility of SFBT as a framework for a short training course for qualified nurses, the majority of them are registered nurses working with adults. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected: the former using pre- and post-training scales, the latter using a focus group conducted 6 months after the training. Data were analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and content analysis. Quantitative data indicated positive changes in nurses¿ practice following the training on four dimensions, and changes in nurses¿ willingness to communicate with people who are troubled reached levels of significance. Qualitative data uncovered changes to practice, centred on the rejection of problem-orientated discourses and reduced feelings of inadequacy and emotional stress in the nurses. There are indications that SFBT techniques may be relevant to nursing and a useful, cost-effective approach to the training of communication skills. Solution focused brief therapy provides a framework and easily understood tool-kit that are harmonious with nursing values.

Syftet för föreliggande studie var att undersöka olika sätt att organisera primärvårdens om- händertagande av patienter med psykisk ohälsa och hur det påverkar patienters nöjdhet med vården. Studiens frågeställningar syftade att undersöka 1) skillnader i nöjdhet mellan patienter som erbjuds sedvanlig Integrerad Beteendehälsa (IBH) med Brief Interventions (BI) och de som får utökad bedömning med vägledd självhjälp 2) om patienters vardagliga funktion förbättras och om förbättringen har ett samband med deras upplevelse av nöjdhet 3) hur vanligt negativa upplevelser är inom behandlingsmetoderna. Av 41 randomiserade primärvårdspatienter kunde 30 analyseras utifrån deras upplevda nöjdhet inom vården. Båda grupperna var i genomsnitt nöjda med vården och skattade besöken som hjälpsamma. Patienter som efter utökad bedömning fick vägledd självhjälp skattade tidigt i behandlingen högre grad av nöjdhet och den skillnaden kvarstod. Det fanns en signifikant förändring av vardaglig funktion till det bättre för patientgruppen som helhet, men förändringen korrelerade inte signifikant med nöjdhet. Det fanns en tydlig skillnad i antal rapporterade negativa upplevelser. 14 negativa upplevelser rapporterades av patienter som fått Brief Interventions, medan en negativ upplevelse rapporterades av patienterna som fått vägledd självhjälp. Slutsatser från föreliggande studie bekräftar tidigare forskning kring att nöjdhet går att uppfylla med kortare behandlingsinterventioner samt strukturerade behandlingar. / The purpose of the present study was to examine different ways of organizing primary care for patients with general mental disorders, and how the treatment affects the patient’s satisfaction with the care. The study aimed to examine 1) if there is a difference in patient satisfaction between patients offered brief interventions within the primary care behavior health model, and patients offered an extended assessment with guided self help 2) if the patients everyday function improves and correlates with their experience of satisfaction 3) how common adverse events are within the two treatment methods. Out of 41randomized primary care patients, 30 could be analyzed based on their perceived satisfaction in health care. The result showed that both treatment groups were overall satisfied with the care and estimated the care visits as helpful. Patients who received guided self-help estimated a higher degree of satisfaction earlier in the treatment, and the level of satisfaction remained high throughout the treatment. Regarding the patient group as a whole, there was a significant change in everyday function; the patients improved their everyday function although it did not correlate with satisfaction. There was a significant difference in the number of adverse events between the two treatment groups. 14 adverse events were reported from patients who received Brief Interventions and 1 adverse event was reported from a patient who received guided self-help. Conclusions from the present study confirm findings from previous research that it is possible to achieve patient satisfaction with brief treatment interventions and structured treatment plans.

<p>Many design agencies and designers like to see design as a longtime strategic investment for any company. However, knowledge of design as a strategic resource depends on ones professional background and ones knowledge of design as such. It is common today that clients meet design agencies and therefore design with a certain skepticism concerning its role in the company. Within the prodctdevelopment-process the company’s different functions meet. Those are people differing in education, background and knowledge. This fact and the differing visions concerning design lead to gaps within the cooperation between design agency and their client.</p><p>This study’s aim was to explain these gaps from the industrial design agency’s perspective.Especially when the cooperation intends to strengthen the client’s brand through product design. We tried to gain insight in the design agencies’ working-process and their attitude towards cooperation and their clients through case studies. Three design agencies in the greater Stockholm area were chosen and interviews were made in November 2007. The collected data was then mainly analyzed through gap analysis. The study shows that the contact between design agency and the client’s management level</p><p>plays a vital role in preventing the management gap. This gap is a result of differing visions of the design service and can lead to different levels of ambition between the partners. By taking this gap into consideration early on, the design-agency can access important</p><p>information about the client’s company and design can be used efficiently as a strategic resource. In addition to that the project’s brief influences the quality of the cooperation strongly.</p><p>The interpretation of brand values to design features is reason for communication-problems between agency and client. Visualizing of ideas, early prototyping and regular meetings can help minimizing this gap. However, a basic condition for successful brand communication is the client’s internal organization. It is vital that Marketing and Research and Development find a common language in order for the design project to become a success.</p>

Denna uppsats undersöker effekter av psykologisk debriefing och avlastningssamtal efter traumatiska händelser hos brandpersonal. Enkätstudiens fokus låg på brandpersonalens känslomässiga påverkan av traumatiska händelser i arbetet. Femtionio personer deltog i enkätstudien, varav 91 procent upplevt en traumatisk händelse. Det fanns inga signifikanta skillnader i posttraumatiska stressreaktioner och psykologiskt välbefinnande hos brandmän efter traumatisk händelse beroende av huruvida brandmännen deltagit i tidig intervention i form av avlastningssamtal, psykologisk debriefing eller inte medverkat i någon form av tidig intervention. / This study investigated the effectiveness of psychological debriefing after traumatic events among professional firefighters. We sought to understand the emotional effect of traumatic events in daily work. To examine this, a survey was conducted with 59 firefighters and among these 91 percent had experienced a traumatic event. There were no significant difference in post trauma reactions and psychological well being among firefighters after traumatic event depending on participate or not participate in psychological debriefing.

Die Brief Social Phobia Scale – German version (BSPS-G) ist ein Kurzinterview zum Screening sozialer Ängste. Dabei werden Schwere oder Verlauf einer bereits diagnostizierten sozialen Angststörung erfasst. Im Folgenden wird der Hintergrund dargelegt und eine Kurzbeschreibung des englischsprachigen Originals (BSPS) gegeben: Die soziale Phobie ist gekennzeichnet durch ausgeprägte und anhaltende Angst, sich in sozialen oder Leistungssituationen peinlich zu verhalten, gedemütigt zu werden oder bestimmte Körpersymptome zu zeigen (Diagnostisches und Statistisches Manual psychischer Störungen, DSM-IV-TR [Saß et al., 2003]). Die Prävalenzraten liegen zwischen 6,7% [Fehm et al., 2005] und 12,1% [Kessler et al., 2005] und bei bis zu 25% für subklinische Ängste, die in Schwere und Beeinträchtigung häufig dem Vollbild ähnlich sind [Beesdo et al., 2007; Knappe et al., 2009]. Zur diagnostischen Erfassung der sozialen Phobie liegen zahlreiche Selbsteinschätzungsverfahren vor, aber kaum Fremdbeurteilungsverfahren [Mitte et al., 2007]. Als Interviewverfahren hat sich die Liebowitz Skala (Liebowitz Soziale Angst Skala, LSAS) [Stangier und Heidenreich, 2005] etabliert. Die BSPS hat demgegenüber die Vorteile, dass sie viel ökonomischer ist und explizit typische Körpersymptome erfasst, die soziale Ängste sowohl begleiten als auch auslösen können. Die Validierung der englischsprachigen Originalversion der BSPS zeigte sehr gute Kennwerte für die Test-Retest-Reliabilität (rtt = 0,91) und die interne Konsistenz (Cronbachs α = 0,82) sowie gute konvergente und diskriminante Validität und Änderungssensitivität.
