Étude de la réactivité et de l'hydratation des particules obtenus par carbonatation de saumures alcalines / Study of reactivity and hydration of particles obtained by carbonation of alkaline brines

Grandjean, Mathilde 04 April 2013 (has links)
This study is a contribution to the characterization and the treatment of alkaline industrial wastes. The direct carbonation of residual brines (RB) by CO2 bubbling results in a gas emission reduction and a potentially valorization of resulting products. This research was focused on carbonate products. The main objective is to link reactivity and valorization (here, desulfurization of industrial fumes). The RB are complex, their chemical and mineralogical composition was studied in particular by Raman spectroscopy to monitor OH-Cl interaction in humid samples. The different hydroxides phases are consumed during carbonation to precipitate calcium carbonates (calcite and aragonite). The chemical composition of RB determines the main part of the reaction of carbonation whereas physical parameters influence the reaction kinetics, the by-products morphology and purity. The feasibility of on-line monitoring of the phases evolution during carbonation using spectroscopy has been validated and a first statistical model for the prediction of carbonate concentration has been developed. The second part of this works concerns the characterization of precipitated carbonates and some parameters as hydration which can influence their valorization. The importance of hydration on the carbonates reactivity was observed in microscopy and at pilot scale. Desulfurization tests of industrial fumes in semi-humid way provided a conversion rate of SO2 ranging between 65 and 70%

Cendres volantes d'électrofiltres d'incinérateur d'ordures ménagères: traitement et incorporation dans des matériaux cimentaires / Municipal solid waste incineration electrofilter fly ash: treatment and incorporation in cementitious materials

Lenormand, Thibault 19 February 2013 (has links)
Its use in cementitious materials allows the elimination of a waste and a decrease of construction materials use. However, before its incorporation in cementitious materials, EFA has to be treated. Firstly, a water washing allows an important decrease in chloride concentration. In a second time, size-based separation is used to select the less heavy metals contaminated fraction, especially in lead and zinc. Indeed, these heavy metals are knows as setting retarders. Finally, a third step involves oxidizing of metallic aluminium contained in EFA during a basic washing with sodium hydroxide. Indeed, if it is not oxidize during the treatment, metallic aluminium converts in aluminates in the cementitious material, and produces hydrogen, generating cracking and voids, and damaging the cementitious material. After the treatment step, a study of the potential reactivity of EFA used in partial replacement of cement is carried out. Results show the activity of EFA treated with sodium hydroxide is mainly physical (grading and developed surface). EFA presents not pozzolanic effect. Leachability tests show an equivalent durability and a very efficient stabilisation of chrome, lead and zinc, allowing the respect of the European environmental standard.

Carbonatation de bétons à forts taux de substitution du ciment par des additions minérales / Carbonation of concretes with high substitution of cement by mineral additions

Younsi, Akli 23 November 2011 (has links)
Cement is the main source of environmental impacts of concrete use. It is thus recognized that the most pragmatic solution for minimizing environmental impacts of concrete is the reduction of the cement content. This could be achieved by replacing a part of cement by mineral additions such as fly ash or blast-furnace slag during concrete mixing. The present work aims at studying the physico-chemical phenomena occurring during the process of carbonation of concrete mixtures with high substitution rates of cement by mineral additions and their resistance against this type of attack. An experimental campaign was conducted on reference concrete mixtures prepared with common cements and on other concrete mixtures, called “Écobétons” (Green concretes), prepared by replacing a part of cement by fly ash or blast-furnace slag. The study focused on the Écobétons durability, especially their resistance against carbonation, on the equivalence of Écobétons performances with the reference mixtures performances and on the composition and microstructure parameters controlling the kinetics of carbonation. Carbonation has been studied in natural and accelerated conditions. The results show that Écobétons mixtures with high substitution rates of cement by fly ash (50 %) and blast-furnace slag (75 %) could replace, in some cases, concretes that are in accordance with the current standard. In addition to the experimental study, numerical simulations of the coupling between hydration and drying were conducted in order to determine the effect of drying on the properties controlling the accelerated carbonation kinetics of the studied concrete mixtures (porosity, Portlandite content and water saturation degree). The results show that the kinetics of drying increases with the degree of substitution of cement by mineral additions. They also question the relevance of the preconditioning of the samples during accelerated carbonation test conducted according to the French standard XP P 18-458.

Isotope systematics of gypsum and its hydration water

Evans, Nicholas Philip January 2019 (has links)
Triple oxygen and hydrogen isotope analysis of the structurally-bound water in gypsum can provide a direct measure of past hydrologic variability. This thesis presents the development of the water extraction and isotopic measurement procedures, the calculation of the gypsum-water isotope fractionation factors, and the application of the method to constrain the palaeohydrologic conditions in two temporally and geographically disparate sites. Measurement of the isotopic composition of gypsum hydration water is used to examine the hydrological changes that occurred during the Terminal Classic Drought of the Maya lowlands (~800-1000 CE), coincident with the period when the Classic Maya Civilization of Mesoamerica collapsed. The data provide a complete and direct archive of hydrological conditions that have previously been limited to ice core records. Mean annual rainfall is shown to have decreased by between 41% and 54%, with intervals of up to 70%, compared to present-day conditions. This study has also shown for the first time that relative humidity was 2%-7% lower during the Terminal Classic Drought compared to today. The methodology is also applied to the massive gypsum deposits in the marginal and deep basins of the Mediterranean to interpret the chemical evolution of parent water bodies during the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.97-5.3 Ma). By combining the measurement of gypsum hydration water with other traditional (e.g. strontium) and novel (e.g. calcium and barium) isotope tracers, the hydrological changes during the deposition of Primary Lower Gypsum units of the Sorbas Basin in southeastern Spain, the Upper Gypsum units of Sicily, and deep basin deposits have been constrained. The results indicate that all deposits experienced a significant freshwater contribution to the mother fluids from which they formed. It is proposed that obliquity-controlled sea level and eccentricity-modulated precession, superimposed on longer-term tectonic restriction of the Mediterranean-Atlantic exchange, together controlled the varying depositional environments during the formation of the Messinian Salt Giant. This thesis demonstrates that the analysis of gypsum hydration water is a powerful tool for palaeoclimate reconstruction. The methodology can be applied to gypsum (and other hydrated minerals) in a wide range of settings across geological space and time, providing a rich source of information about the environmental conditions under which they formed.

Les aquaporines dans l'épiderme humain : expression, localisation et modifications au cours de la différenciation / Aquaporins in human epidermis : expression, localisation and changes during differentiation

Jamot, Mathieu 07 April 2011 (has links)
Aquaporins (AQPS) are a family of small proteins forming water channels across cell membranes.AQPs 0, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 are strictly water channel whereas AQPs 3, 7, 9 and 10 allow transport ofwater and glycerol. We have studied their expression in the epidermis, the outer-most water-impermeablelayer of the skin. In melanocytes, dendritic cells responsible for pigmentation, only AQP1 is expressed, invitro and ex vivo. We have shown that keratinocytes, principal cells of the epidermis, express AQPs 3 and10 in proliferation, whereas differentiated keratinocytes express AQPs 3 and 9. The localisation of AQP3to plasma membrane of keratinocytes was previously reported from the basal layer to the spinous layer ofthe skin. We localised AQP9 in the fully differentiated keratinocytes of the granular layer, where there is ahigh glycerol and low water content. So we think that AQP9 likely functions as a glycerol transporter.Unlike other authors, we were unable to identify a link between tumorous proliferation and the expressionof aquaporins.

Transfert hydrique dans le milieu poreux réactif : Application à l’étude de séchage d’une pâte pure ettringitique au jeune âge / Moisture transfer in the reactive porous medium : Application to the drying of an ettringite binder at early age

Nguyen, Hai Trung 21 December 2018 (has links)
Self-leveling flooring compounds (SLC) are often composed of calcium aluminate cements (CAC) and calcium sulfate to ensure rapid setting. The mineral composition of calcium aluminate cements is usually designed around monocalcium aluminate (CA). Recently, a new cement with the main compound of mayenite (C12A7) has been designed to optimize the application of SLC by increasing the amount of ettringite in the hydration product. However, there is a lack of knowledge related to early-age hydration (during the first 24 hours) of this type of product. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the interaction between early-age hydration and natural drying through a coupling model. This model is applied to the study of an ettringite binder composed of cement rich in C12A7 and plaster First, a kinetic model of hydration, initially developed in a diluted system, has been proposed to study the hydration of an ettringite paste under endogenous conditions. It allows to describe the evolution as a function of time of the porosity, the water content, and the quantities of phases (reactants and hydrates). A model of pore size distribution has also been proposed. This model allows us to obtain the capillary pressure curve at early-age, which is necessary for the modeling of moisture transport. Then, a complete modeling of water transfers was presented. It has shown that the assumption of constant gas pressure leads to an overestimation of mass loss for weakly permeable materials. However, for the case of CAC, this hypothesis can be retained to simplify the coupling with the kinetic model of hydration. Finally, a modeling of the coupling between hydration and desiccation has been developed. The originality of this model concerns the integration of the isothermal curve resulting from the pore size distribution model in the modeling of water transfers via a Matlab function. The model was able to reproduce the kinetics of mass loss of a sample of ettringite binder subjected to early drying. The role of temperature was also elucidated. In addition, the model predicted an early stop of hydration on the drying surface after 10 hours of hydration. The effect of desiccation reaches a depth of 5 mm on a sample with a thickness of 3 cm.

Développement et Application de modèles dépendant et indépendant du temps pour l’étude des propriétés spectroscopiques de composés d’intérêt biologique / Development and application of time-dependent and time-independent models for the study of spectroscopic properties of compounds with biological interest

Thicoïpé, Sandrine 10 December 2012 (has links)
Molecules with biological interest participate to biological processes in living organisms or in space (exobiology). Water plays a predominant part on properties of considered systems.Since computations take an important part in interpretation of experiments, the aim of this phD will be to try to reproduct IR experimental spectra with methods of quantum chemistry for two different hydrated systems : nitrate aerosols and microhydrated nucleic acid bases. This work presents a same approach to obtain the best agreement between experience and theory. First, the geometrical model for representation of hydration was investigated with the GSAM code developed at the laboratory. Then, the most adapted theoretical method was determined for studies of each system. Different methods of determination of electronic structure, especially B3LYP and their analogs considering medium and long range interactions B3LYP-D and CAMB3LYP, and vibrational treatments (VPT2, VCI-P and MD) were tested. The experimental evolution observed for wavenumbers associated to the five vibrational modes of the nitrate ion depending on the number of water molecules within the aerosol is reproducible using a model of aggregates of molecular clusters labeled (NaNO3,nH2O)3 at the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) level of theory : the average discrepancy between theory and experience reaches 15cm-1. Concerning microhydrated nucleic acid bases (X=C, T, U, A et G), the best representation of aqueous environment is made of an explicit model labeled X,nH2O with n=1 to 5 -determined from the application of the GSAM code-, with an implicit one like the PCM model. The comparison of wavenumbers calculated at the B3LYP and B3LYP-D levels of theory in the 1000-1800cm-1 spectral region which represents the vibrational signature for each base favoured the first method. But time-dependent and time-independent methods of vibrational treatment provide comparable results in this region, with a computational cost less important for the VPT2 approach.

Caractérisation expérimentale des processus d’hydratation et de carbonatation des roches basiques et ultra-basiques / Experimental caracterisation of hydratation and carbonatation processes of mafic and ultramafic systems

Peuble, Steve 27 June 2014 (has links)
Since the mid-90s, in situ mineralization of CO2 has been considered as a safe and efficient solution to mitigate its anthropogenic emissions to the atmosphere. It is to recover the CO2 emitted by some industries and trap it in the mineral form (carbonates) in mafic and ultramafic aquifers (e.g. basalts and peridotites). The carbonation of CO2 has been widely described in natural systems where it occurs through a series of complex chemical reactions coupled to the transport of reactive species in the fluid. Numerous experiments have been conducted in batch reactors over the past fifteen years to better understand the physico-chemical parameters controlling the carbonation of (ultra-)mafic rocks. But few studies have further characterized the coupling reactive-transport processes during the injection and in situ mineralization of CO2 in these rocks. This work aims to meet 3 main objectives: (i) characterize changes in reaction paths during the injection of CO2 in (ultra-)mafic systems, (ii) measure the feedbacks effects of chemical reactions on the hydrodynamic rock properties and (iii) quantify the efficiency and sustainability of such processes over long time periods. It is based on the development of experimental protocols to (i) reproduce the injection of CO2 into (ultra-)mafic rocks and (ii) characterize the reactions using a series of geochemical and analytical tools from the atomic to the centimetric scale. Three series of reactive percolation experiments have been performed on (ultra-)mafic aggregates from relatively simple (olivines from San Carlos and Hawaii) to more complex samples (basalts from Stapafell) under in situ P-T-containment conditions (Ptot=10-25 MPa; T=180-185°C; Pcont=15-28 MPa).The results allowed us to differentiate several reactions paths in these systems depending on the fluid transport, rock porosity, local hydrodynamic properties, mineralogy and/or local changes in the fluid composition. Mass balance calculations have revealed an efficient mineralization of CO2 in the samples. It is controlled by the chemical and the hydrodynamic properties of the rock at the pore scale. But some reactions associated with the alteration of (ultra-)mafic rocks (e.g. hydration) have negative feedbacks effects on the reservoir rock properties (porosity and permeability) that may compromise the sustainability of CO2 storage in natural aquifers in the long term. These new supporting data will allow numerical models to better simulate the carbonation of (ultra-)mafic rocks knowing the hydrodynamic properties and the structural heterogeneities of the reservoir. They also suggest that a better control of some injection parameters, such as the flow injection rate and the injected fluid composition (e.g. pCO2), would improve the rate and yield of CO2 mineralization in these systems.

The SC is formed by anabolically dead cells, the terminally differentiated corneocyte, and its function is essentially accomplished by forming a highly insoluble protein structure on the surface of the corneocytes, termed the cornified cell envelope, and by impeding water diffusion across the SC by mortaring the corneocytes together by layers of skin-specific lipids, essentially ceramide, cholesterol and fatty acid. In this work the cell envelope of the SC was spin labeled with a sulfhydryl-specific nitroxide reagent to investigate the water content effects upon the protein dynamics directly in the intact tissue. A two-state model for the nitroxide side chain described the coexistence of two spectral components in the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra. The so-called strongly immobilized component, S, is associated with the EPR signal of a motionally restricted nitroxide fraction having its N-O group hydrogen bonded to protein (rigid structure) while the weakly immobilized component, W, corresponds to the signal provided by the spin labels with higher mobility (~10 times greater) exposed to the aqueous environment. The relative populations between these two mobility states, S and W, are in thermodynamic equilibrium. The standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy changes for transferring the nitroxide side chain from the state contacting the solvent, W, to the one contacting protein, S, indicated that the reduction of the SC water content to below ~h 0.69, g H2O per g dry SC, stabilizes the protein interacting state, S. Upon decreasing the SC hydration level below ~h 0.69 the segmental motion of the polypeptide chains and the rotational motion of the spin-labeled side chain were also constrained. To test our methodology in a pure and very well known protein, we also studied the effects of two types of detergents on the bovine serum albumin (BSA). Both detergents, the anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the zwitterionic N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonium-1-propanesulfonate (HPS) increase the mobility of the protein backbone and of the nitroxide side chain. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that these detergents destabilize the protein favoring less compact conformations. This work can also be useful to improve the spectral analysis of site-directed spin labeling, especially for a more quantitative description in terms of thermodynamic parameters.

The sustainable development conception has resulted in increased environmental pressures to improve the efficient use of resources and reduction of emissions and waste generation. In the steelmaking process through electric arc furnaces (EAF), dust generation occurs which is called electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). EAFD is composed by different metal oxides. Some common elements those constitute this dust is chromium, lead and cadmium, and therefore, waste is classified as class I – hazardous by NBR 10004. EAFD has been generated in large quantities every day across the country and it still has mainly landfilled. The pulp and paper industry, another important activity in the domestic industry, generates a lot of waste in different stages of the process, among which is the lime kiln waste (LKW), whose generation is associated with disruptions in the lime oven. Due to expressive amount of raw materials consumed in civil construction industry and also the variety of products available - cement, concrete, aggregates, ceramics, among others - this seems to be an alternative for waste recycling generated in other sectors. The incorporation of EAFD in the cement and concrete produces delayed setting time due to the presence of zinc (Zn) in the waste. Studies suggest that in amounts up to 1%, EAFD incorporation does not affect significantly cement properties. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of the combined use of EAFD and LKW in the process of hardening and evolution of the cement pastes hydration. Therefore, were evaluated the characterization of the waste performed through the grain size distribution, loss on ignition, specific gravity, specific surface area, elemental chemical analysis, pH, X ray powder diffraction with refinement by Rietveld and scanning electron microscopy.. The influence of the waste on the cement pastes was evaluated through the setting time tests in accordance with the NBR NM 65 (ABNT, 2003b) and evolution of semi-adiabatic temperature in fresh conditions, XRD with refinement by Rietveld, and SEM in cement pastes with different levels of waste substitution (REF, 1%, 2%, 3%, 5% e 10%) at different ages (1, 4 and 7 days). The setting time results and evolution of semi-adiabatic temperature indicated an increase in the setting time with the increase of the EAFD in cement pastes. In cement pastes with replacement of 1% EAFD combined or not with LKW, significant delays were not verified in the setting time, demonstrating the potential use of EAFD in the production of cement artifacts.
