Niego Vásquez, Raquel 03 November 2016 (has links)
Tesis

Gramsci in Latin America: Reconstitutions of the State

Freeland, Anne January 2017 (has links)
This dissertation traces the reception of Antonio Gramsci’s works over a series of critical moments in the development of the Latin American left, including the transitions to democracy in Argentina and Brazil, Latin American subaltern studies in the academic sphere, and the rhetoric of Pink Tide governments of the twenty-first century, with a focus on Bolivia. My central argument is that Gramsci has appealed to Latin American intellectuals as a theorist of the state—notwithstanding his more frequent characterization as primarily a theorist of civil society—and that the different appropriations and deployments of Gramscian concepts such as the war of position and the integral state have been oriented, in one way or another, toward a defense of constituted as opposed to constituent power, and more generally toward the closure of constituted political subjectivities. The project is intended at once as a study of the historico-political conditions of intellectual production in Latin America, and more specifically as a contribution to the scholarship on the long history of the centrality of the state in Latin American politics, as well as an examination, focused on a particular theoretical field, of modes of appropriation and resignification of political concepts in the construction and contestation of power.

Catholic missionary narratives introduce religious actions as a heroism accomplished in the alterity of Central Africa. Our aim was to investigate the Catholic expansion, realized by the Missionaries of Africa, in Nyassa Vicariate, in the extensive territory dominated by Babemba, in Northern Rhodesia, nowadays Zambia. The aggregation of mission stations sprinkled over Northern Rhodesia, as far as to the whole extension of Nyassaland, composed such ecclesiastical territory. Methodologically, we have make used of Anthropology and History interface to conduct our analytical interpretation of missionary narratives: diaries, official documents and atlas. For that reason, we have chosen as our natives the members of that Catholic institute, founded in 1868, by the French Cardinal Charles Lavigerie, in Algeria. We set up the period of investigation the moment they left the Shiré site and reached Mambwe, in 1891, until 1937, when the erection Apostolic Vicariate of Luangwa granted by Propaganda Fide. To understand such bureaucratically products, we investigate how Catholic habitus has structured itself to define its ecclesiastical borders in terms of ethnicity, competing prestige amongst other Catholic groups and, also, with laity domination. Missionaries of Africa differed from other institutes by producing diacritical signs to sustain its collective identity, operating due to prescriptive circumscriptions, bellow and around the papacy. We concluded that Catholic expansion brought to Rhodesia missionary actors, priests and brother, willing to sacrifice their lives and be adapted to refractory actions of colonial plans, chiefdoms’ resistances against foreigner domain and tensions inner the ecclesiastical borders.

The Preaching and Pastoral Ministry of Charles Jerry Vines: A Model of Evangelistic Focus

Pennington, Jeffrey Donovan 16 May 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines and evaluates the preaching and pastoral ministry of Charles Jerry Vines as a model of evangelistic focus. Chapter 1 introduces the preaching and pastoral ministry of Jerry Vines as a model of evangelistic focus. The author addresses the broad concern of the evangelistic ineffectiveness of the Southern Baptist Convention and then establishes warrant for the particular qualities of Vines' preaching and pastoral ministries in regard to their connection to his evangelistic results. Chapter 2 provides a biography of Charles Jerry Vines. Since very little biographical information has ever been formally collected on his life and ministry, this dissertation gives considerable attention to a thorough treatment of these matters. This chapter delves into the significant details of Vines' life to establish him as a worthy model of evangelistic focus. Chapter 3 presents the theological framework that guides his methodology of evangelism. This chapter both describes and evaluates his theological underpinnings. It focuses on his views of theological method, revelation, atonement, pneumatology, soteriology, and eschatology. Chapter 4 offers an overview of Vines' approach to expository preaching, focusing primarily on an element of his sermon structure that he calls an "evangelistic twist." It surveys how the twist is used in his preaching from texts that span from Genesis to Revelation. It discusses principles for the twist that lead a preacher to stay within the meaning of the text along with pitfalls to avoid while formulating the twist. Chapter 5 examines Vines' preaching and teaching through the book of Acts. The bases for this chapter are his most recent sermon series that he preached through the book of Acts along with his Sunday School Curriculum Acts Alive. It discusses Vines' hermeneutical method, his guarded prescriptive hermeneutic for Acts, whether or not his dispensational view weighs in on the book's application for personal evangelism, and a discussion of timeless truths pertinent to personal evangelism for the local church. Chapter 6 offers concluding remarks that summarize the most pertinent findings of my research. It discusses qualities of Vines' ministry worth emulating along with other matters of consideration.
