Alex Flemming : questões para o nosso tempo / Alex Flemming : questions for our time

In parallel, Anthropology (especially Visual Anthropology) finds that images do not exist without our imaginary and, in its turn, societies could not emerge without the arts. It is through these horizons that, among other authors such as Hans Belting, Alfred Gell and, mainly, Georges Didi-Huberman (privileged exegete of the father of modern iconology, Aby Warburg); we intend to participate in a wider questioning about the role of the Arts (and images) in a reconfiguration of the anthropological speech. It is from this interactive and experience based starting point that we investigate the work of Alex Flemming. With him, we seek to rethink the political dimensions of images and learn to recognize what they say about our human condition in the contemporary world / Mestrado / Multimeios / Mestra em Multimeios

García Contreras, Pilar January 2010 (has links)

Mudzanani, Nndanduleni Bethuel January 1990 (has links)
Currently, in the period of Poststructualism literature is widely approached as a cultural and social phenomenon and the aims of literary studies as the illuminating of social codes, ideology etc. embedded in literature. This study evaluates the contribution of specific critics working within the so-called "New paradigm". The concept "New paradigm" is used as an umbrella term covering a number of distinct developments, referring to literature as a system of literary "actions" rather than as a canon of books. In recent years several Afrikaans critics have embraced or adapted current theories in the domains of Deconstruction, Ideology Criticism, Literary, Sociology, Recepticm Aesthetics, Semiotics and Feminism. This study explores and evaluates the application of such theoretical paradigms to their work in the field of practical criticism. This study also explores the relationship between current theories of literature and their antecedents. The notion of current literary theory and practice not only as a broadening of scope and content of the notion of the "literary" but on the other hand as a liberation of theory and practice from an over-deterministic thrust (i.e. the approach of literature as no more than a set of social documents) is also evaluated in this study. A twofold aim of this study can thus be defined: a. to determine the extent to which the shift from the "old" to "new" theories was made necessary by the developing literary and social scene; b. to examine the links beween theory and practice in the work of specific, key figures in Afrikaans. Is it possible for theory and practice to be separated? Is there an important consistence in the relationship between the two in the work of the figures chosen?

Personal autonomy : philosophy and literature

Vice, Samantha Wynne January 1999 (has links)
Gerald Dworkin's influential account of Personal Autonomy offers the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) Authenticity - the condition that one identify with one's beliefs, desires and values after a process of critical reflection, and (ii) Procedural Independence - the identification in (i) must not be "influenced in ways which make the process of identification in some way alien to the individual" (Dworkin 1989:61). I argue in this thesis that there are cases which fulfil both of Dworkin's conditions, yet are clearly not cases of autonomy. Specifically, I argue that we can best assess the adequacy of Dworkin's account of autonomy through literature, because it provides a unique medium for testing his account on the very terms he sets up for himself - ie. that autonomy apply to, and make sense of, persons leading lives of a certain quality. The examination of two novels - Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day and Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady - shows that Dworkin's explanation of identification and critical reflection is inadequate for capturing their role in autonomy and that he does not pay enough attention to the role of external factors in preventing or supporting autonomy. As an alternative, I offer the following two conditions for autonomy: (i) critical reflection of a certain kind - radical reflection, and (ii) the ability to translate the results of (i) into action - competence. The novels demonstrate that both conditions are dependent upon considerations of the content of one's beliefs, desires, values etc. Certain of these will prevent or hinder the achievement of autonomy because of their content, so autonomy must be understood in relation to substantial considerations, rather than in purely formal terms, as Dworkin argues.

Catalan modernism and E. d’Ors ideology of noucentisme

Maingon, Louis January 1976 (has links)
In this thesis we have attempted to demonstrate that Noucentisme, as defined and propugnated by Eugeni d'Ors in the Glosari 1906-1910 is a continuation of the first Catalan Modernism. This theory has in great part been influenced by research on this subject compiled by the late Eduard Valentf, in his book, KL primer modernising Catalan y_ sus fundamen- tos ideol6gicos. We have, therefore, greatly relied on his generational and theological definition of Catalan Modernism, which we elaborate upon and sum up in the first two chapters. Owing to the extensive nature of Houcentisme, as of any literary movement, we have restricted our research to the work of its originator and theoretician, Eugeni d'Ors. In our thesis we have tried to point out that d'Ors reacted against the "fin de siecle" literary movements, which were a degenerate form of the original Catalan Modernist grouping, represented by L'Avenc.that was dispersed aflter 1893. In order to demonstrate that d'Ors absorbed, reorganized, and modified Catalan literary modernism, we have proceeded by closely examining the greater part of his work and ideology between 1900 and 1910, as well as most posterior writings concerning this period of. his development. In Chapter IV ye have studied his so-called modernist writings produced between 1900 and 1905, and collected in La muerte de Isidre Nonell seguida de otras arbitrariedades,'. From these we have determined the basic "modernist" ideas forwarded by d'Ors during those years. Between Chapter V and Chapter VII we have delineated the aesthetic and political ideology which d'Ors considers to be the basis of Noucentisme, and which was primitively contained in La muerte de Isidre Nonell seguida de otras arbitrariedades. In Chapter Till we have examined the direct relations between d'Ors theories and the modernist writers. The explicit formal relation between Modernism and Noucentisme is briefly discussed in the conclusion. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

This work addresses Vargas' power project, trom 1937 to 1945, known as "Estado Novo" (The New State), in the scope of its effects, that is, the men and women who underwent the process. To do so, the bountiful correspondence which was sent to Vargas by these common men and women during the unfolding ofthe events was examined, focussing on how these people dealt with the regime's messages and affirmation procedures and how a communication policy process between them and the regime was established, particularly with Vargas himself Thus, within a limited tramework, which in any case was not controlled by civil society during the Estado Novo and the regime's strategies to establish cJoser links with the public, targeted at obtaining consent, adhesion and political control, these letters are viewed here as a peculiar and plausib!e way of participating in that períod. This proposal presupposes that when the people "handled" the project drawn up by the Varguista regime to organize and control society, instead of taking a resigned and passive stance, the workers and people interpreted it according to their own cultural values, seeking to achieve their goals of obtaining advantages, rights and the carrying out of justice, creating a paradoxical state of affairs which simultaneously ratified and contested the regime's dominating procedures. Thereforc, notions such as social justice, the family as a base for the Oíganization of society's values, highlighting work and workers as a source of making the nation greater, thereby making this everyone's duty, nationalism, patemalism, and above all the ideology of lhe Getulista era and the mystique created around the president (lhe Vargas myth), re-appear under a new light and different political contexts / Doutorado / Doutor em História

This dissertation focuses on the analysis of certain aspects of the meanings of "national" and "regional" in the development of the idea of "Brazilianness" (brasilidade), during the first phase of the Modernist Movement (1922-1930). For this purpose, the following literary works are analysed: the Pau-Brasil Manifesto and the Anthropophagic Manifesto, written by Oswald de Andrade, and the Regionalist Manifesto, written by Gilberto Freyre. Based on these Manifestos, we tried to understand the construction of the national and regional meanings, looking at potential similarities and differences between them as well as their own internal contradictions. In addition to this broader objective, the aesthetic-political heterogeneity of the "national" and the "regional" meanings was analyzed in a more specific way, evaluating the notions attributed to these two notions and possible processes of interpenetration of both. In order to better understand these issues, the notion of "dialectics of localism and cosmopolitanism", a concept developed by Antonio Candido's literary criticism, was used. Through this concept, the Manifestos and the socio-historical contexts in which they were produced were analyzed, aiming at apprehending the meanings of the "national" and the "regional". Finally, a possible "foundational" dimension present in the Manifestos of Oswald de Andrade and Gilberto Freyre: the "Matriarchy of Pindorama" and the "Myth of the three races" was considered.
