This work discusses the emergence, development and termination of sports chronicle. Initially, the relationship between chronicles and football was at odds, since this sport was considered a foreign thing, practiced by the high society. With the entry of lettered men in the world of sports chronicles, being the case of José Lins do Rego and Nelson Rodrigues, the chronicle was to play a key role in creating a certain football fancy, like Flamengo's mystique, Pele's royalty, the canarinho shirt and the stray dog complex, for example. Finally, the moment that the literature leaves the sports chronicle, the opinion and the vocabulary left are from a specialit, a sportswriter who discusses tactical formations and lineups. The literate writer is replaced by football expert, an analyst, a rational being to counteract the supporter's passionateness. The chronicle abandons the literature to become just a column.

The following pages consist in a historical ethnography of the Hollywood eye. In particular, it describes the sedimentation of the screen persona of Humphrey Bogart (1899- 1957) in the first half of the 1940s. The analytical focus is twofold: on the one hand, pays attention to the gender relations inscribed in his performances; on the other, seeks to relate his social trajectory and Hollywood's industrial structure of production. A discontinuity goes between an artist's interpretation in front of the camera and his/her correspondent projected image on the screen: the work of numerous other professionals (screenwriter, sound technician, editor etc.) completes the process until the film release, when it is evaluated by public and critic. In cinema, the artistic performance is submited to the camera, that executes the mediation of the entire process; to the technical apparatus corresponds the screen persona, that does not resume itself to the interpreter nor his/her characters: at the same time that unites these - outlining a model of gender - it also supplies to the former the social setting in the structure of production. The Bogart case offers a circumscribed picture because his persona emerged in a linear form in half a decade (after years of investment), when Hollywood organized itself through a mode of production called studio system, where each studio developed its own style and controlled the entire industrial production of a film, from screenplay to exhibition - and therefore the relative autonomy of the artist was very narrow. Through a series of clues collected from various sources (films, literature, biographies, historiography), this dissertation argues that social experience and visual culture are inseparable, defends that Bogart's persona (a canonical symbol of masculinity) was nourished by the dramatic tension between the apparent indifference and the sudden vulnerability, and finally demonstrates that the relation between Bogart and his persona was characterized by otherness / Mestrado / Antropologia Social / Mestre em Antropologia Social

The beginning of this research is done by the Graphic Designers Association of Brazil and the 9th Brazilian Biennial of Graphic Design, which aimed to conduct a survey regarding the participation of graphic design on the cultural artistic circuit. On this survey, the analysis were focused on two study cases regarding projects of cultural dissemination on the artistic circuit, specifically the art institutions, directly related to the music and dance arts. Included on this is designer's Kiko Farkas, twelve showing posters of culture and arts focused on music for the Symphony Orchestra of the State of São Paulo - OSESP and designer Vicente Gil, with the visual identity, seen in the showing by the brand and poster, designed for the institution and focused on dance. São Paulo Dance Company - SPCD. Separately are observed the basic visual elements that compose the materialization of graphic pieces, divided more specifically in shape, color and typography. On the graphic shapes, this includes questions related to graphics, drawings, photographs, layout of elements, grids, among others. The analysis of the formal aspects of the study cases comes mainly from the classification method of visual language proposed by Dondis (2003). On the chromatic aspects, studies addressing the lifting of the main sets of colors, through specific software, highlighting the ways to use the colors applied by designers on projects. The questions aimed the raising typographical, through specific software and bibliography, the main families of printers used in the projects, highlighting how their characteristics and differentials were used by designers. Following some contributions to the understanding of the discursive strategies and creative journeys of the case studies in graphic design on the artistic cultural circuit will be explored. Finally, supplemental information beyond the ones provided by the 9th Biennial ADG, images, interviews and visits, complementing the understanding of the cases studied. Punctual studies enable broader understanding of processes in common, or similar, between different areas of cultural production. Thus, it is possible to start drawing a parallel between the practice of cultural and artistic activities with the activity exerted by graphic designer, with projects aimed at dissemination of cultural products, and they themselves, become cultural products / Mestrado / Artes Visuais / Mestre em Artes

An application of Rosenau's pre-theory to the Sino-Indian and Sino-Burmese boundary disputesCharlebois, Carol Ann Ruth January 1969 (has links)
This paper is an attempt to explore some of the linkages between national and international political systems through an application of a modified version of Rosenau's pre-theory to the Sino-Indian and Sino-Burmese border disputes.
The Indian and Burmese cases presented contrasts on some of the variables considered in Rosenau's theory along with marked differences in the consequences of policy outputs. The case studies revealed important differences in the foreign policy making processes that could be linked to Rosenau's variables and to outcomes and consequences.
Concepts developed within the field of foreign policy analysis, the study of international political systems, and the theory of bargaining can readily be encompassed within the model. The model, however, presents some problems of definition and problems in causal analysis. / Arts, Faculty of / Political Science, Department of / Graduate

Aspects of the absurd in modern fiction, with special reference to Under the Volcano and Catch-22Atkins, Shirley Elizabeth January 1969 (has links)
This thesis acknowledges the presence of a clear note of affirmation in some novels of the mid-Twentieth Century. Finding a similar affirmation in Albert Camus' essays, The Myth of Sisyphus and The Rebel, it attempts to demonstrate a basic agreement between the essays and a limited selection of such novels. It then attempts to support this conclusion by examination of two novels in some detail. It considers that this relationship arises naturally from the artists' mutual perception of man's perilous condition in the modern world, and that it does not imply the necessity of conscious imitation of Camus' thoughts on the absurd. Nevertheless, since this thesis intends to show that the affirmation in the novels arises from an attitude that Camus termed "absurdist" and inheres in a way of life that he termed "absurd," such novels, for the purpose of this study, are called "Absurd."
Chapter One attempts to explain man's existential anxiety as a spiritual state germane to his condition as an intelligent being in an obscure universe, and to describe how this natural anxiety, painfully intensified in a godless, materialistic age, has resulted in spiritual sterility and paralysis of creative action. Of this condition, such novelists as Malcolm Lowry, Joseph Heller, William Golding, Lawrence Durrell and William Styron seem acutely aware. In addition, it attempts to define Camus' uses of the term "absurd," and to explain the nature of the absurd life—the life of absurd rebellion—that he advances as the only-positive answer to the challenge of the times.
While recognizing that the diversity evident among these novels attests to their nature as independent creations, Chapter One attempts to establish their basic agreement with Camus' ideas of the absurd, and to trace the existence among them of broad similarities. Finally, by examination of values implied, it notes that these authors seem to arrive at Camus' conclusion that "everything is permitted," limited, as Camus limits it, by the necessity of individual responsibility.
Chapters two and three, detailed examinations of the absurd in two novels, Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano and Joseph Heller's Catch-22, attempt to clarify the nature of the authors' protest by pointing out what forces, both external and internal, are attacked. As this process involves an analysis of the nature and results of destructive escapism, whether individual escape into alcoholism or mass escape into meaningless conformity or excessive rationalism, it suggests also the urgency of the individual struggle for the "lucid awareness" that Camus demands. In particular, these chapters hope to clarify the affirmation implied by the individual liberation from illusion and anxiety to defiant joy in conscious living.
The Conclusion restates the fundamental agreement between the controlling themes of these novels and the tenets of the absurd delineated by Camus. Also, it demonstrates the diversity of method and approach by which the two novels deal with common themes and arrive at affirmative conclusions.
Finally, it warns against the interpretation of this fiction as the expression of a doctrine for universal salvation. The Absurd Novel is not, therefore, what Camus would call disparagingly a "thesis-novel" ; at most, like The Myth of Sisyphus, it issues a positive challenge to the individual in the modem world. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Remittance bards : the places, tribes, and dialects of Patrick White and Malcolm LowryWilliams, Clifton Mark January 1983 (has links)
This thesis traces the efforts of Patrick White and Malcolm Lowry between the years 1933 and 1957 to "purify the dialect of the tribe." As young writers in the England of the Thirties both felt the language of the English middle class, the pre-dominant dialect of English fiction, to be exhausted. Some time in the Forties, both chose to live and write in isolated places where they believed there to be English dialects which possessed a vigour and a contact with reality absent in the England they had abandoned. The texture and structure of their subsequent writing demonstrate the effects of this choice of locales.
My introductory chapter surveys the concern of both novelists, up to the end of the Fifties, with language, class, and place, and addresses the biographical
facts relevant to these concerns. This discussion establishes the formal, linguistic, and ideological parameters of my approach to these novelists. The body of the thesis is divided into two sections: the first deals with the period up to 1941, the second with the post-war period.
Part A, chapter I addresses the cultural background
and the ideological confusion of young middle-class writers in England during the Thirties. The following three chapters set the early novels of both writers in this context. Part B begins by establishing the post-war literary milieu in England from which the fiction of White and Lowry offers a sharp break. The following five chapters consider the continuing influence of Thirties dilemmas on their approach to form and the use of language, the attempts of both writers to find formal means adequate to their readings of the contemporary
world, and their progressive break with literary realism.
The conclusion evaluates the literary results of these struggles with language: in particular, the degree to which a creative use of dialect has extended the range of the English novel during a period characterized
in England by caution and retrenchment. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate
