Neologismos lacanianos e equivalências tradutórias

Reuillard, Patrícia Chittoni Ramos January 2007 (has links)

Gwyn Thomas and the emergence of an Anglo- Welsh literary tradition

Wilson, Jeanne Mary January 1971 (has links)
Gwyn Thomas, a Welshman from the Rhondda Valley in industrial South Wales, is a contemporary writer whose contribution to Anglo-Welsh literature bridges the divergence between cultures. The emergence of Anglo-Welsh writers is relatively recent; and although these writers have no imposed homogeneity, no shared defined purpose, they have in common a generic quality that is recognizably that of the Welshman writing in English. Collectively, the Anglo-Welsh demonstrate their fundamental and real experience of the alienating effects of industrialism and anglicisation. The industrial wasteland and linguistic schizophrenia are the shameful and inconsolable central wound in South Wales. Gwyn Thomas demonstrates the effects of industrialism in Merthyr and the Rhondda Valley. In his novel, All Things Betray Thee, he recognizes the destructive and alienating effects of technological progress. In this and other works, he speaks for the victims of economic depression, but transmutes the mean streets of industrial villages into a world where there is a rural and green peace within echoing distance of the mountainous tips, a world where an articulate, lyrical, Puckish people, who were indigenous to Wales long before the expansion of Elizabethan England, are the counterpart to their rural country-men. Gwyn Thomas exemplifies the invincible spirit of the people among whom he was born and grew to manhood and with whom he shares lineage ties with all Welshmen, whichever tongue they speak. In harmony with the precept that laughter ameliorates suffering, the humour of Thomas's characters annihilates their degradation. His jester's wit entertains and evokes laughter which, by virtue of its contrast with his compassion and serious comment, gives insight into the pity and the shame of a people's rejection and a land unmade. His alliterative, euphonious language, his vivid imagery and metaphor, his wit, perception and lyricism, derive from the people of Wales. He is a poet of the industrial valleys, and his voice is true to Wales. His is the generation of Anglo-Welsh writers who have established a new literary tradition. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

A Trumpeter's Guide to Samuel Barber's Capricorn Concerto

Crafton, Jason Allen 08 1900 (has links)
Samuel Barber's Capricorn Concerto for flute, oboe and trumpet with strings is an important though seldom performed work. The concerto is teeming with performance choices that are indicative of both historical and contemporary influences. At present, there are limited resources available to performers regarding Capricorn. The first section of this study presents an historical and contextual examination of Capricorn both in terms of Barber's own compositional output and that of his influences and contemporaries. The second section includes a performance analysis of the work, while the third section includes an analysis of existing recordings. Implications for the performer are outlined in last section. The guide provides performers with pertinent background, analytical and performance information in order to facilitate informed, high-level performance.

The evaluation and readjustment of the VPI-CE horizontal control network

Rheinhart, Brian K. January 1981 (has links)
The main objective of the VPI-CE control network. is to contribute to the Nation.al Geodetic Survey control network. In order to meet this objective, large amounts of survey data were accumulated at different times from various surveys between the years 1977-1980. Bach different set of survey data was reduced and adjusted by least squares independently creating various "sub" control networks that were connected to each other peace- . meal. When "sub" control networks were connected to each other, it was found that they did not meet the objective stated above. It is the purpose of this project to examine and check all survey data, adjust all data as one set to the NGS control network, and to evaluate the adjusted data to see if the survey meets second-order class II traverse specifications as established by the NGS. Included in this paper are the following: a background on NGS specifications; least squares theory including observation equations, and error theory; a description of how data for the project was accumulated and reduced; the adjustment of the reduced survey data; results and analysis of the adjustment; and conclusions and recommendations for the survey. / Master of Engineering

Essays on the Determination of Equilibrium Real Exchange Rate for Taiwan, 1981-1993

Chen, Mei-Ling 01 May 1998 (has links)
Taiwan is one of the four smaller Asian economies. Before 1960, Taiwan pursued industrialization policies by limiting imports of manufactured goods, gradually adopting an open and outward-oriented economic policy, believing it would expend exports and yield gained ground. With this increasingly open and outward-oriented economic policy as the background, we will study the real exchange rate (RER) misalignment in Taiwan over the period 1981-93. The RER plays a critical role in maintaining external competitiveness. Hence, from the policy point of view, this rate should not be allowed to deviate much from its equilibrium level. Since the equilibrium real exchange rate (ERER) is unobservable, it is very important that the concept be based on sound economic reasoning and its measurement should be done as correctly as possible. It is generally agreed that misalignment in the RER has a negative effect on the economic performance of a country. This dissertation is divided into two essays. The first essay deals with the estimation of ERER by using the Edwards and the Elbadawi approaches and the measurement of the RER misalignment from two different approaches. The second essay investigates the empirical importance of the distinction between the permanent and temporary components of the determinants of the ERER. By using the same reduced form equation from the first essay and reestimating the ERER by employing the techniques of a modern time-series analysis, which is introduced by Steven Beveridge and Charles Nelson, an empirical analysis is presented of the RER behavior.
