Paulo Freire e Erich Fromm : convergências e divergências / Paulo Freire and Erich Fromm : convergences and divergences

Lira, Alessandra Mendes, 1986- 27 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Renê José Trentin Silveira / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-27T15:20:45Z (GMT). The work aims to research Erich Fromm's influence in Paulo Freire's major works, namely: Education, the practice of freedom(1971) , Pedagogy of the Oppressed(2005) and Conscientization(1980). Having, however, visited other works, comments were made on other important author bibliographic references, such as Extension or Communication(1983) and Cultural action for freedom (1970); books in which there is great debate on the discussed concepts. Erich's Fromms books used in the research were the ones that were quoted by Freire in his work, translated to Portuguese as: Fear will Freedom (1960), The Heart of Man (1967), Human Analysis (1974) And Also The Marxist concept of man (1967b). For the research, Fromm's quotes made by Freire were observed in the above mentioned books. As noted, Fromm appears frequently in many topics approached by Freire such as: the concept of men, the concept of freedom and the notion of fear of freedom. From these themes and observations, we investigate Fromm's influence in Freire writings, noting differences and similarities between the authors. The study showed that, even considering an epistemological change throughout his writings, Freire often resorts to Fromm to support its concepts, bringing, nonetheless, a different perspective in the solution to overcome the fear of freedom, building thus an educational alternative to human emancipation / Mestrado / Filosofia e História da Educação / Mestra em Educação

Investigation of steam reformation of natural gas for the very small scale production of hydrogen fuel for light duty vehicles in appliance-type refueling systems

Lomax, Franklin D. 05 September 2009 (has links)

Fuel cell propulsion systems fueled directly with hydrogen are being seriously considered as a means of powering future light-duty vehicles. One of the greatest impediments to the introduction of such vehicles is the perception that transitional infrastructure to supply hydrogen will be an insurmountable obstacle. This transitional infrastructure requirement might be met through the introduction of very small scale refueling appliances which provide compressed hydrogen for either one vehicle or a small fleet of vehicles. These small appliances must be efficient, non-polluting and low in cost.

The report investigates the feasibility of one type of refueling appliance based upon chemical reformation of natural gas in a steam reformation process. A natural gas steam reformer employing a palladium-alloy membrane hydrogen separator operated at high pressure and temperature (15+ bar and about 1200 K), should attain a net system efficiency between 60% and 80% (LHV).

Initial kinetic modeling of the reformer suggested that for mono-tubular reactor geometries the reactor was heat transfer limited. Thus, parallel micro-tubular or plate-frame geometries might yield the highest space velocity. Critical issues which must be resolved include required degree of hydrogen recycle for catalyst stability as well as the catalyst-specific kinetics.
Reforming of natural gas to hydrogen appears to be a viable option for very small scale hydrogen refueling appliances. A good deal of experimental and analytical design work is required to develop such systems, but they should meet the important requirements for this application.
/ Master of Engineering

The Political and Cultural Economy of Sightseeing: Foreign Tourism in the "New China" (1949-1978)

Healy, Gavin January 2021 (has links)
“The Political and Cultural Economy of Sightseeing” examines how personnel within the state tourism bureaucracy struggled to balance the use of foreign tourism as a form of political, historical, and cultural representation with the demands of developing a revenue-generating service industry in a socialist economy. I argue that tourism, particularly the practice of sightseeing, played an important role in the creation of the “New China”: a re-imagination of the Chinese nation-state as a political, economic, social, and cultural entity under socialism. By focusing on particular elements of the state’s production of the tourist experience, including the formulation of itineraries, the regulation of tourist photography, and changing notions of customer service, this dissertation reexamines the ways the political and economic goals of the state converged during the Mao era (1949-1976) and through the early period of market reforms under Deng Xiaoping in the late 1970s. This dissertation traces the development of tourism infrastructure in the first three decades after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, locating this history at the intersection of public diplomacy and economic development. It will help further our understanding of modern Chinese political and economic history, as well as the broader history of socialism in the twentieth century. “The Political and Cultural Economy of Sightseeing” focuses on the production of tourism rather than the consumption of it. It follows three main groups of actors in the tourism industry of the New China: tourism industry officials; the rank-and-file workers who fed, transported, and guided the tourists; and, to a lesser extent, the tourists themselves. Tourism officials, tourism workers, and tourists all had their own conceptions of the New China and the place of tourism in it. Tourism officials needed to know what the tourism industry meant for the politics and economy of the New China before they could show that new nation to others. Tourism workers needed to understand where their labor fit into the narrative of the New China in order to serve the tourists and serve “the people.” Finally, foreign tourists gazed upon the landscape of the New China in ways that tourism planners, guides, and service workers often struggled to anticipate and manage. Together, these three groups built a tourism industry and contributed to the establishment of a new national narrative.

Soft power and paradiplomacy of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region : a critical appraisal

Chan, Wai Yin 30 August 2019 (has links)
This study evaluates Hong Kong's soft power through investigating the relations between the city's paradiplomatic ambits and performance and critically reflects on how the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) to further develop its presence in international stage and its identity as an active non-sovereign international actor. This study also enriches the literature of paradiplomacy and soft power of non-sovereign actors since the soft power analysis is still limited to state-centric research. This research also explores new angles to deal with Hong Kong-China relations by highlighting how the paradiplomacy and the soft power of Hong Kong can create space and flexibility for the city's international engagement. A theoretical framework which incorporates new institutionalism and normative theory to explain the interplay of paradiplomacy and soft power is proposed and tested. This study adopts multi-pronged method to investigate Hong Kong's soft power and its leaders' capabilities in upholding the city's international profile under "One Country, Two Systems". Through studying the international indexes, surveys of public opinion, official documents like Hong Kong Policy Addresses and conducting in-depth interviews, this study delineates and evaluates the soft power capacities within paradiplomatic ambits of the city. The key findings of the research indicate the HKSAR government has had a very restrictive understanding of the soft power for the city. In particular, the study proves that both institutions and values of Hong Kong are crucial for boosting the city's soft power. In contrast to the conventional system, the institutions of the HKSAR have limited the fostering of values of Hong Kong, but also the development of the city's soft power. This study shows that the tensions between the government and civil society have weakened some of the potential soft power resources. Moreover, the prevailing policy focus on strengthening the city's financial and economic status with respect to China's rise to power has not done justice to other stakeholders such as the film industry and the civil society who could have made considerable impacts on enriching and enhancing Hong Kong's global attractiveness. The paradiplomatic power of the HKSAR government has not been persistently pursued in the policy implementations. As the HKSAR government claimed it is committed to upholding the city's international profile and to promote its soft power globally, this study intends to make an original contribution to our understanding of the relations of the city's soft power, paradiplomacy and policy implementations.

Tacit Culture and Change: A Model of Change Constructed From Institutional Assumptions and Beliefs

Hall, Alice A. 14 April 1997 (has links)
Higher education today faces a conflict between increasing societal demands and decreasing budgets. Innovation and change in higher education occur in the face of limited institutional resources. Meeting the challenges confronting colleges and universities is best accomplished by applying planned change efforts that recognize tacit culture (underlying assumptions and beliefs) and incorporate these cultural components into the change process. To date, however, change theory in higher education provides limited insight into institutional culture and how culture interacts with change. This is complicated by the fact that there are very few acknowledged methods for revealing tacit components of culture in higher education. This study provides the fields of change theory and institutional culture with, first, knowledge about revealing culture in higher education and, second, a model of change grounded in a single institution’s assumptions and beliefs. Using a variation of Sackmann's (1991) open-ended, issue focused interview method for uncovering tacit components of culture in corporate organizations, this study reveals cultural assumptions and beliefs about a planned change project in a two-year community college. Further, a model of change is constructed from the revealed assumptions and beliefs that explains the role of this tacit culture in the probable outcomes of the change project. / Ph. D.
