Verborum ordo – ordo verborum : the placement of the dependent genitive in Classical Latin

McLachlan, Kathryn Anne January 2012 (has links)
In this thesis I examine the placement of the dependent genitive relative to its head noun in Classical Latin prose. The corpus is drawn from the works of four first-century B.C. authors: Caesar, Cicero, Sallust and Varro. The thesis itself is split into two main sections, a qualitative analysis and a quantitative analysis. The qualitative analysis discusses a number of factors that may influence genitive position, drawn from literature on the subject as well as my pilot studies. These factors are information structure, the genitive’s grammatical function, discontinuity, lexical category, animacy, prepositions governing the head noun, reported speech, idioms, lexical items, and grammatical number of the genitive. This analysis examines individual instances of genitive position in context, providing examples and counter-examples of the ordering patterns found with each potential factor. The qualitative analysis suggests that a number of these factors have an effect on genitive position, particularly information structure. These results are tested by the quantitative analysis. By performing a multivariate statistical analysis using the programme GoldVarb, the combined effects of multiple factors are determined and the statistically significant factors ranked in order of importance and strength of effect. The statistics show that information structure is the most important of the factors. Other significant influences are the presence of prepositions, the function of the genitive and its lexical category. By combining the two types of analysis, qualitative and quantitative, this thesis shows in detail how the factors combine to influence word order, which of them are independent, which interact, which are important and which have little to no effect at all, resulting in a better understanding of the data and the way that the contextual factors work together to produce the variant orders of the dependent genitive.

Archaeometrical Study On Marble Forgery

Songul, Gunes 01 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis focuses on the detection of marble sculpture forgery made of cultured marble. Cultured marble is a mixture of marble dust, polyester and accelerators. Thus chemical analysis of cultured marble would give declined levels of calcium when compared to authentic sculptures. Since sample removal is a problem when dealing with archaeological heritage, the instrument used was portable X-Ray Fluorescence device which provides in situ analysis of the samples. Device has been used to analyze six authentic and four forgery sculptures. Seven of the sculptures were provided by Anatolian Civilizations Museum and three of them were provided by a sculpture workshop, Ak

Probabilistic and multivariate modelling in Latin grammar : the participle-auxiliary alternation as a case study

Brookes, James William Rowe January 2014 (has links)
Recent research has shown that language is sensitive to probabilities and a whole host of multivariate conditioning factors. However, most of the research in this arena centres on the grammar of English, and, as yet, there is no statistical modelling on the grammar of Latin, studies of which have to date been largely philological. The rise in advanced statistical methodologies allows us to capture the underlying structure of the rich datasets which this corpus only language can potentially offer. This thesis intends to remedy this deficit by applying probabilistic and multivariate models to a specific case study, namely the alternation of word order in Latin participle auxiliary clusters (pacs), which alternate between participle-auxiliary order, as in mortuus est ‘dead is’ and est mortuus ‘is dead’. The broad research questions to be explored in this thesis are the following: (i) To what extent are probabilistic models useful and reflective of Latin syntax variation phenomena?, (ii) What are the most useful statistical models to use?, (iii) What types of linguistic variables influence variation, (iv) What theoretical implications and explanations do the statistical models suggest?Against this backdrop, a dataset of 2409 pac observations are extracted from Late Re- publican texts of the first century bc. The dataset is annotated for an “information space” of thirty-three predictor variables from various levels of linguistics: text and lemma-based variability, prosody and phonology, grammar, semantics and pragmatics, and usage-based features such as frequency. The study exploits such statistical tools as generalized linear models and multilevel generalized linear models for the regression modelling of the binary categorical outcome. However, because of the potential collinearity, and the many predictor terms, amongst other issues, the use of these models to assess the joint effect of all predictors is particularly problematic. As such, the new statistical toolkit of random forests is utilized for evaluating the relative contribution of each predictor. Overall, it is found that Latin is indeed probabilistic in its grammar, and the condition- ing factors that govern it are spread widely throughout the language space. It is also noted that probabilistic models, such as the ones used in this study, have practical applications in traditional areas of philology, including textual criticism and literary stylistics.

Alpha prime phase leads to decreased corrosion resistance and mechanical properties losses of duplex stainless steels. In this work mechanical and electrochemical tests were performed in duplex stainless steel UR 52N+ aged at 475ºC for various periods in order to determine the sensibility of these tests to alpha prime presence. Hardness tests showed a gradual increase in its values; on the other hand, impact tests revealed that the material aged for 12h losses about 80% of energy absorption capacity of the solution annealed sample. Notwithstanding cyclic polarization tests showed that significant changes are only noted for aging times greater than 96h.

The goal of this work is to evaluate the effects in the transformation kinetics and in the mechanical properties of the AISI 430 (16-18% Cr) ferritic and the SAF 2507 (24-26% Cr) superduplex stainless steels, when they undergo aging heat treatments at 475°C, thus embrittled by the formation of the alpha prime phase. This phenomenon is known as “475°C embrittlement” and it occurs in the ferrite of ferritic and duplex stainless steels, and in martensitic stainless steels aged between 300°C and 550°C. The monitoring and analysis of the kinetics of α’ formation in the AISI 430 and SAF 2507 steels was done based on mathematical fitting by means of nonlinear regression of seven sigmoidal models of general application, whose were compared to the JMAK model of diffusive phase transformations elaborated by Johnson, Mehl, Avrami and Kolmogorov. Ferritic steel samples were submitted to solubilization heat tratments in a tubular furnace at 1050°C for 30 minutes, and at 1150°C during 30 minutes for the duplex steel. Posterior aging treatments will hold at 475°C by various periods. The evolution of the “475°C embrittlement” and, indirectly, the formation of α’, were verified by the way of Vickers hardness, tensile and Charpy instrumented impact tests. Microstructural and fractographic analyses were done by optical and scanning electron microscopies (FEG-SEM); crystallographic analyses by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD); and chemical analyses by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The superduplex steel, containing approximately 25,2% Cr, showed a faster embrittlement kinetics than the ferritic steel, with about 16,6% Cr. The sigmoidal model that better fitted to the hardness data of both steels was the Boltzmann one; which also showed greater versatility of information and a better fit and predictive ability than the JMAK model. The trends for rising aging times of the AISI 430 steel were the increase in the yield and ultimate tensile stresses, having oscillation in the breaking stress in function of the aging time, yet the literature claims that there is also a increase in the breaking stress. The change in the mechanical behavior from ductile to brittle (cleavage) of the AISI 430 steel, in function of the following of the “475°C embrittlement”, was more severe in the impact test specimens, compared to the tensile specimens.

Eficácia executiva das sentenças declaratórias / Enforcement of declaratory sentences

Tonin, Mauricio Morais 02 May 2012 (has links)
The present study is based on the changes made by law 11.232 of 2005 in Brazilian procedural law. Besides establishing the one and only lawsuit by eliminating the necessity of a new suit execution after finished the legal discussion, the mentioned law also changed concepts and specific statements of the procedural law. The most important is the one of article 475-N, I, which says that the sentence that recognizes the existence of an obligation of doing, not doing, delivering or paying shall be enforceable. Therefore, it is intended to do an analysis of the sentence and its enforcement, specially for declaratory ones, as the law does not enforce only the conviction, but those sentences that acknowledge the existence of the obligation. Then, it is first studied the jurisdictional issue, sentence, its classification, its effects and stare decisis. After, it is analyzed the execution. Finally, is studied the sentence and its enforcement, the enforcement of declaratory ones and the acknowledge of an obligation in favor of the defendant, the judgment in favor or against the plaintiff in lawsuits to recognize the inexistence of an obligation, and declaratory arbitration and foreign sentences confirmed by STJ.

Tectono-metamorphic Evolution Of The Northern Menderes Massif: Evidence From The Horst Between Gordes And Demirci Basins (west Anatolia, Turkey)

Bugdaycioglu, Cagri 01 September 2004 (has links) (PDF)
The Menderes Massif forms a large metamorphic culmination in western Turkey &amp / #8211 / an extensional province where continental lithosphere has been stretching following Palaeogene crustal thickening. Northern sector of the Massif on the horst between G&ouml / rdes and Demirci Basins was chosen for structural analysis aimed to study the tectono-metamorphic evolution of the northern Menderes Massif. Within the study area, four groups of rocks are recognized: (1) the metamorphic rocks &amp / #8211 / orthogneisses and metasediments / (2) pegmatoids / (3) Neogene sedimentary rocks / and (4) Quaternary alluvial sediments. The tectono-metamorphic history of the region involves a regional metamorphism (M1) at upper-amphibolite-facies conditions, coeval with a top-tothe-NNE contractional D1 deformation during the northward backthrusting of Lycian Nappes (Eocene main Menderes metamorphism). Partial anatexis during the latest stages of the M1 was speculated to be the main mechanism for the formation of the migmatites and the granitic magma. Pegmatoid domes and dikes/sills formed during late increments of this phase. A second metamorphism (M2) and coeval top-to-the-NNE deformation (D2) took place during the Early Miocene exhumation of the metamorphic rocks along a presently low-angle normal fault in an extensional shear zone at presumably greenschist facies conditions during declining P-T conditions. The latest deformation phase (D3) is high-angle normal faulting due to N&amp / #8211 / S extension affecting western Anatolia. The E&amp / #8211 / W grabens dissecting the Massif into northern, central and southern submassifs are the result of this phase, commenced during Pliocene-Pleistocene and gave the western Anatolia much of its present-day shape. The evidence presented supports the idea of episodic two-stage extension in western Turkey.
