Algorithms for automatic analysis of faults in electrical power systems.

Yoshida, Everton Shigueaki 30 May 2014 (has links)
This work presents the development of algorithms for the automatic analysis of overcurrent events in electrical power systems. The algorithms proposed in this paper are based on data of voltages and currents recorded by intelligent electronic devices (digital oscillographs and / or protection relays) installed in electrical networks, which can evaluate the operating state of these networks based on this information. The algorithms incorporate an automatic system for overcurrent analysis, which is able to estimate the time of occurrence of the event, identify the steps involved and classify the fault type using the phasors of voltages and currents calculated from their records. Furthermore, this work presents a comparison between two distinct techniques for phasor calculation (the first one uses the Discrete Fourier Transform, with a cycle window, and the second one is based on genetic algorithms) and three distinct techniques to estimate the time of the occurrence of the event (the first is based on Fourier Transform and a digital filter that implements a probability density function, the second one replaces Fourier transform by Genetic Algorithm and the third one is based on Park transform). For the evaluation of the developed algorithms, cases from two distribution network model have been generated in the ATP software - Alternative Electromagnetic Transients Program, additionally, actual data from distribution Brazilian utilities systems were also analyzed by the developed algorithm.

Growth rates and body condition of juvenile green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Dry Tortugas National Park and Marine Protected Area

Unknown Date (has links)
Dry Tortugas National Park (DRTO) consists of 261.8 km2 in the Gulf of Mexico and provides protection to marine species facing a multitude of threats. Among the many species that utilize DRTO is the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). I examined seven years of capture-recapture data to determine how the body condition (using Fulton’s equation, K = M/L3) and growth rate for juvenile green turtles vary within, and among size classes in DRTO, and how those rates compare to similar populations in other locations. Body conditions ranged from 0.77 to 1.71 (mean 1.3 SD ± 0.16). Growth rates ranged from 2.5 to 9.9cm/yr (mean 5.5 cm/yr SD ± 1.25), which is a high growth rate for green turtles. Establishing growth rates and body condition for a specific population can provide insight into life history and health of that population, as well as important data for comparison to populations in other areas. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015 / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Determining the Effects of Fire on Ridge Shape Complexity In the Central Everglades

Unknown Date (has links)
Self-organized spatial patterning of microtopographic features is a trademark characteristic of the Everglades landscape. Anthropogenic modifications to Everglades’ hydrology have reduced and degraded pattern, where ridges occur at higher elevations and spread into open water sloughs under dryer conditions. Wildfire is an important ecological force in the central Everglades and may maintain ridge-slough patterning through reducing ridge size and complexity, and thus preserve habitat heterogeneity. To investigate fire as a patterning mechanism in the central Everglades I examined the shape complexity and area distribution of ridges along a chronosequence of time since fire. Shape complexity did not change following fire, but small and large ridges became more prominent and eventually spread as time since fire increased, suggesting fire may maintain ridge area distribution. Documentation of fires’ effect on ridge size will inform ecosystem and conceptual models detailing the complex interactions that maintain the Everglades ridge-slough patterning. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Therefore we focused on the American TV show South Park, an animation that is dedicated at caricature them. We worked with the hypothesis that the idol is a simulacrum that doesn t resist to humor desecrate. In order to do that we adopted as the main investigative theorist reference the concepts of dispositive and profanation from Giorgio Agamben s philosophy, to whom the caricature present on the cartoons reveals the human and ordinary character of the idols, taking off the phantasy veil which sacralizes it. But we also mobilize as other conceptual operators the lacanian real , once that by definition he doesn´t let himself lose from the imaginary as well as the symbolic and cynical subject notion, as developed by Slavoj i ek, which takes us to elaborate another hypothesis, the one that the engaging at the modalization defiler of the show might not occur because of the cynical reception of its audience. The corpus selected to analysis constitutes of 71 episodes of 22 minutes duration selected among more than 200 of the previously mentioned TV show, aired between 1997 and 2011, as well as the feature film South Park: bigger, better and uncut (1999). The selection was made mostly based on the purpose of what we intend to show / O intuito desta pesquisa é estudar a construção social contemporânea das celebridades, bem como o papel que ela exerce na civilização midiática.

Faunal distribution in relation to rainfall patterns in the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park

Maraschin, Nicoletta Maria Rita January 2016 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Johannesburg, 2016. / This project investigates the influence that rainfall and temperature patterns have on mammal drinking patterns at an artificial waterhole in KGNP at Nossob. On a regional scale, this project investigates long-term rainfall and temperature trends over three/four decades, and in some instances the past 100 years, respectively for KGNP using climate records from weather stations located within the park and adjacent areas. This project makes use of KGNP census data to observe spatio-temporal distributions of large mammals in relation to rainfall (and to a lesser extent temperature) variability. Investigations assess whether relationships exist between faunal movement and distribution and rainfall volume and frequency. On a local scale, this project makes use of webcam images measured at 15-second intervals to establish mammalian drinking patterns and waterhole use over a short time scale (October 2012 – December 2014). The climate data for Twee Rivieren, Mata-Mata, Nossob and Upington reveal statistically significant increases in Tmax (av. 0.04°C) over the study period, whilst in summary, mean regional temperatures have increased by almost 1.6°C over the past 40 years. Rainfall patterns have revealed a north to south gradient in KGNP, where the northern and central parts of the park are becoming drier and the southern parts are becoming wetter. This demonstrates rainfall variability throughout KGNP over the period 2004 - 2013. This study established a positive relationship between faunal distributions and rainfall patterns within the park, showing that certain species are highly reliant on rainfall as a source of drinking water. It has been established that herbivore species are more reliant on the water trough during the dry season, when surface water is not available. However, there is an even spread of carnivore species water trough usage during the wet and dry season throughout the year. It has been established that during rainfall events exceeding ca. 30mm, faunal species prefer to utilise the natural surface water rather than the artificial waterhole at Nossob. Water trough usage under different temperature thresholds has revealed that groups of species (carnivores and herbivores) drinking patterns shift to either earlier or later in the day when temperatures increase, in order to avoid heat stress. Changing rainfall patterns could drastically cause water shortages, which will negatively affect the amount of available drinking water for mammals within KGNP. This study is important in contributing to an improved management of KGNP through providing a quantitative description of the relationship of mammal visitation at water troughs to the ambient climate. This is particularly valuable as climate change projections for the region suggest progressive drying. Water troughs will become an important source of moisture. / LG2017

Marknadsundersökning - hur en Science Park-nod på glesbygden bör göras synlig<em></em> / Examination in marketing - How to make a Science Park-node known at the countryside

Jonsson, Malin January 2009 (has links)
This work treats the question of how a Science Park-node should get familiar at the countryside. The study has been made mostly through questionnairies from March 2009 until September 2009. The work has been answering how the Science Park-node in the little conurbation Mariannelund should be marketing their business. Although the business has been there since the fall 2008 it has not yet been marketed. This report shows how the marketing ideas possibly can make the Science Park-node to get more customers. A Science Park-node can offer customers a part of an office, copying-machine, businessconsulting and fellow workers. The target group are businesses that are at the most three years old.</p><p>In the beginning of the project there had to be a theoretical research. Then I had to know which marketingchannels that are mostly used or seen by the target group, that is why a postal questionnaire was sent out to 162 new businesses in the area around Mariannelund. To remind the target group about the questionnaire telephone calls were made where I also asked them some new questions, this time about the needs a new company has got.</p><p>Phone calls were also made to other organizations, in the same type of business as the Science Park-node, to get to know how they marketed their businesses.</p><p>The study shows that a Science Park-node at the countryside should try to attract new customers by making publicity about the node to people in the countryside. This should be made in a way that makes people talk about it. Some ideas are that the node can try to be seen in the local newspapers, make events for the citizens of Mariannelund, mail information about the node to the target group and make an own website.</p><p>The communication of the node should be that it solves problems for the target group. One idea is that it can focus on telling the target group that it is situated nearby home and that the target group can get personal assistance with the development of their business plan. If the Science Park-node also makes a graphic profile with lots of elements which is shown for the target group the popularity will come sooner.</p>

Anonymitet och intensifierad kontinuitet : Klassisk stil och form i <em>Hämnarens resa</em> / Anonymity and intensified continuity : Classical style and form in <em>Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance</em>

Damm, Andreas January 2009 (has links)
<p>The intention with this essay is to investigate how the narration of the South Korean film <em>Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance</em> (Park Chan-wook, 2002) relates to the Hollywood pictures of today. An important change which David Bordwell pays attention to is an intensifying of former stylistic paradigms in what he denominates as intensified continuity. That said, Bordwell and Kristin Thompson are in agreement on that the new films still are predominantly classical. The neoformalistic standpoint which Thompson and Bordwell use appears however to contain some problematic implications. Their way of categorizing films as classical, critics maintain, could only result in empty shells of formal parameters. The essay is built upon investigating three areas: plot, narration and style. The result of this study indicates that <em>Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance</em> remains within the classical characteristics, as well as differentiates on certain matters. However, appropriate conclusion needs taking into account also some of the difficulties and critiques targeting the neoformalistic take on style.</p>

Perspectives on the Municipal Role in Effectuating
Sustainable Industrial Park Development and Operations:
The Hamilton, Ontario Case

Murray, Kathryn Rae Bryer 27 May 2009 (has links)
Within the greater movement of sustainable development, industrial practices have been identified as a key area in which much improvement is both necessary and possible. The development and operation of industrial parks have become a focus of these efforts. The basic premise of this thesis is that a sustainable industrial park should function in an economically competitive manner that provides for human needs through market mechanisms while doing so in alliance with the local community, in congruence with the local ecosystem and within the carrying capacity of the planet. From a municipal planning and economic development perspective, this thesis focuses upon the development of a municipal strategy to effectuate sustainable industrial development and operations. Utilizing a blended theoretical approach incorporating general systems theory and planning theories, the proposed industrial park surrounding the Hamilton International Airport, in the City of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, has been analyzed to develop a viable sustainability vision for the park, identify barriers to implementing and achieving that vision, and formulate a municipal strategy to promote and enable the pursuit and realization of that vision. It was found that there is an important role for the municipality to assume and numerous opportunities for concrete municipal action throughout the planning, development and operational stages of the industrial park. Upon reflection of the research process, the findings were extrapolated to garner wider applicability and relevance to other municipalities provincially, nationally, and internationally, as well as to the professional and academic community involved in industrial sustainability.
