Business intelligence is a tool that helps decision makers make informed decisions based on data. Self-Service is an extension of Business Intelligence that focuses on the individual that uses BI-tools and how independent they are. The purpose of this research paper is to cover missing pieces from previous research regarding Self-Service Business Intelligence and to identify factors that can help organizations succeed to become more independent decision makers. This paper is focused only on the combination of Self-Service and Business Intelligence and on organizations that are in the beginning of their usage of BI- tools. Previous research shows that there are many challenges that can affect users and organizations in the process of becoming more Self-Serviced in Business Intelligence. By conducting a case study with the help of a qualitative research method consisting of seven semi-structured interviews, a strategy has been created to help organizations identify what they need to do, to reach a higher level of independent decision-making. The collected data has been analyzed by using an inductive method. The results of the analysis and previous research has led to the conclusion of the study which involves a model consisting of four steps that need to be assessed to overcome the challenges of becoming Self-Service Business Intelligence users. The four steps consist of; becoming aware of the organization’s level of digital maturity; conducting education to raise internal knowledge; identifying different internal needs; and, finally, making BI-reports available to the users, thus increasing accessibility.

Self Service Business Intelligence inom offentlig sektor : En kvalitativ studie om vilka utmaningar som den offentliga sektorn ställs inför vid användning av SSBI

Digitalisering sker idag både i privat som offentlig sektor där datadriven beslutsfattning är en av trenderna. En teknologi som vuxit fram i samband med digitaliseringen och som hjälper verksamheter utvecklas är Self Service Business Intelligence (SSBI). Offentliga verksamheters digitala utveckling går långsammare än för privata bolag. Studien syftar till att undersöka vilka utmaningar offentliga verksamheter ställs inför i sin användning av SSBI samt att presentera hanteringsförslag på dessa utmaningar. För att besvara studiens frågeställning och uppfylla dess syfte har en kvalitativ forskningsansats använts. Semistrukturerade intervjuer har genomförts där respondenterna har varit personer som arbetar på offentliga verksamheter alternativt mot offentliga verksamheter. Studien resulterade i fyra utmaningar som är vanligt förekommande inom offentlig verksamhet och som inte lyfts i tidigare litteratur. Dessa fyra är; diversifierade verksamheter, ledningen, lagar och säkerhet samt begränsad självständighet. För varje utmaning har förslag diskuterats för hur utmaningarna effektivt kan hanteras. Studiens slutsats kan vara hjälpsam för offentliga verksamheter i deras fortsatta utveckling mot att bli datadrivna i sin beslutsfattning. Med hjälp av datadriven beslutsfattning möjliggörs för offentliga verksamheter att arbeta mer hållbart och bli mer resurseffektiva. / Digitization is today taking place in both private and public sectors, wheredata driven decision making is one of the trends. Self Service BusinessIntelligence (SSBI) is a technology that has emerged in conjunction with thedigital development and is helping businesses to develop. However, thedigital development in public organizations tends to be slower than forprivate companies. Therefore, this study aims to examine the challengesfaced by public organizations in their use of SSBI and also to presentproposals for addressing these challenges.To answer the research question and fulfill the study's purpose, a qualitativeresearch approach has been used with an abductive thinking. Semistructured interviews have been conducted with respondents who work in orwith public organizations. The study resulted in four challenges that arecommon in public organizations and that have not been addressed inprevious literature. These four challenges are diversified organizations, themanagement, laws and security, limited self-reliance. For each challenge,proposals have been discussed for how the challenges can be effectivelyaddressed. This study conclusion can be helpful for public organizations inthe continued development towards becoming data driven decision making.With the help of data driven decision making, public organizations can workmore sustainably and become more resource efficient.

Self Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) har förmågan att i grunden förändra beslutfattningsprocessen i organisationer där självgående användare har en kunskapsmakt att använda data för att fatta insiktsfulla beslut. För att förverkliga SSBI i en organisation är utbildning av slutanvändare en essentiell byggsten för ett lyckat införande, samtidigt är detta en konstaterad utmaning i SSBI-sammanhang. Därför är syftet med denna studie att identifiera vilka utmaningar som finns avseende utbildningar av slutanvändare inom SSBI. För att besvara frågeställningen har en intervjustudie genomförts med personer som har yrkesmässiga kopplingar till utbildningar av slutanvändare inom SSBI. Resultatet av studien är elva identifierade utmaningar som kan fördelas över sju olika dimensioner inom utbildningskontexten, och presenteras i en sammanfattande modell. En generell slutsats av studien är att de flesta av de identifierade utmaningarna kan undvikas om organisationen gjort ett gediget förarbete i termer om formulering av en övergripande SSBI-strategi och en kartläggning av slutanvändarnas tekniska kompetens och analysbehov i en SSBI-miljö. Resultatet i denna studie kan användas av organisationer som står inför en lansering av SSBI och vill ha ut mer av sin utbildningsinsats mot slutanvändare, för att öka sannolikheten för ett lyckat SSBI-införande.

Success Strategies for Small Service Business Owners

Small business owners struggle to sustain their businesses over time. According to U.S. Census data in 2014, only half of all small businesses survived beyond the first 5 years of operation, and only a third survived longer than 10 years. Grounded with the strategic contingency theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies small service business owners used to succeed beyond the first 5 years of operation. The target population consisted of 4 owners of small service and retail businesses in Arlington, VA, with fewer than 50 employees who have succeeded in business longer than 5 years. Through a process of methodological triangulation, data collected from financial documents, publicly available records, and external sources supplemented semistructured interview data. Using thematic analysis by coding narrative segments, 3 themes emerged including developing a unique marketing strategy, developing strategic leadership skills, and required business skills for sustainability. Successful unique marketing strategies emerged from understanding customer needs. The results from this study could benefit business owners by improving business success rates, which would have a positive economic effect on local community, including job creation, and sustainable economic stability. The implications for positive social change might include the reversal of small business failure trends through the application of successful business strategies.

I början av 1990-talet så genomförde den borgerliga regeringen friskolereformen vilket in-nebar att det statliga monopolet upplöstes och att fristående skolor kunde konkurrera på samma villkor som kommunala skolor. Detta medförde att det ekonomiska ansvaret för gymnasieskolan övertogs av respektive kommun och att skolpengen infördes. Reformen har inneburit ökat antal skolor och hårdare konkurrens. Detta tillsammans med minskat elevan-tal har pressat skolorna till att optimera sin marknadsföring för att attrahera elever. Syftet med uppsatsen är att beskriva och analysera om det finns någon skillnad i hur kommunala respektive fristående gymnasieskolor arbetar med marknadsföring. Samt att undersöka hur deras syn på dagens skolmarknad ser ut. För att ta reda på detta har vi intervjuat företrädare för fyra stycken kommunala och fyra fristående skolor i Stockholms län. Vi har även valt att göra observationer på Gymnasiemässan 2010. Undersökningen har visat att Öppet hus och gymnasiemässan är viktiga mötesplatser för att skapa långsiktiga relationer till eleverna. Det har även visat sig att skillnaden mellan vad skolorna kommunicerar inte beror på vilken huvudman skolan tillhör. Två av de kommunala skolorna hade problem med att anpassa sig till nyare teknologi och nyare kommunikationskanaler jämfört med två av de fristående sko-lorna som var i framkant när det gäller kommunikationskanaler. De fristående skolorna var alla överens om att det var viktigt att skydda sig mot konkurrensen genom att differentiera sig på dagens marknad. / In the beginning of the 1990’s, the Swedish government changed the rules on the school mar-ket by implementing a school reform. The reform made it possible for private actors to com-pete on the market along with the municipal schools on equal terms. The economic responsi-bility for the schools was held by the county. The reform made entry to the market easy which has led to hardened competition. By present time it is clear that the number of pupils is de-creasing. As a result, this forces the schools into optimising their marketing to attract pupils. The purpose of this paper is to describe and analyse whether there is any difference in how municipal schools and independent schools conduct their marketing, and how their perception of the schoolmarket is. To study this we have made four interviews with municipal schools and four interviews with independent schools in the county of Stockholm. We have also made an observation on Gymnasiemässan (high school fair at the event hall “Stockholmsmässan”). The conclusion of the study is that to create a long term relationship with the pupils it is nec-essary to use Öppet hus (when schools invite parents and pupils to experience the school) at the schools and to attend on the High school fair. The message communicated by the schools does not differentiate depending if the school is independent or municipal. Two of the munic-ipal schools were having a problem with adapting to newer technology and newer channels of communication, compared to two of the independent schools who were in a leading position in ways of channel communication. All of the independent schools did agree upon the neces-sity to differentiate on today’s market to be protected from the competition.

Šiuo magistro baigiamuoju darbu siekiama atskleisti analizuojamos teorijos poveikį konkrečiai Lietuvoje veikiančiai paslaugų įmonei.Tyrimas patvirtino hipotezę, kad aprobojimų teorijos metodus galima sėkmingai taikyti pasaugų versle, jie padeda surasti geriausius problemų sprendimo būdus, tačiau kiekviena organizacija yra gyvas organizmas, išsprendus vienas problemas atsiranda kitos. / Despite the fact that in the last decade just small percentage of companies in Lithuania with help from professional consultants, applied the Theory of Constraints principles in their business activities, still the issue of applying the Theory of Constraints principles in services providing companies is not thoroughly explored. This Master’s thesis aims to reveal the impact of the analyzed theory on the particular services providing company.The hypothesis was confirmed by the research that the Theory of Constraints methods could be successfully applied to service business, they are used to find the best solutions to the problems, but each organization is like a live organism which confronts new problems after solving the old ones.

The main objectives of this work are determining Self-Service Business Intelligence as one of Business Intelligence approaches, description and characterization of Qlik Sense and finally development of particular solution using the above tool. In the first part thesis deals with the theoretical side of the approach, describes its advantages and disadvantages and users coming into contact with the respective technologies. Subsequently, thesis specifies requirements for Self-Service Business Intelligence and mentions different requirements and sizes of solutions in organizations. At the end recommendations for the implementation of the approach and technologies are mentioned. The second part is devoted to Qlik Sense platform, as one of the representatives based on the Self-Service approach. At first basic features, options and benefits are described. Then the development of solutions and principles of work with this tool are explained. Finally, architecture of enterprise server solution is described together with installation steps and basic configuration of a Qlik Sense site. The third part is focused on mobile virtual operator GoMobil, its current state, Business Intelligence needs and last but not least the requirements and development of solution using Qlik Sense platform.

Context of Self-Service Business Intelligence : A case study of IT-enabled organizational transformation

Fast evolving digital technologies lead to a rapidly changing environment where decisions have to be made in a short time. The promised solution is data-driven decision making and business intelligence. However, business intelligence has until now only been available to executives and managers whereas many of the workers' wishes for their own business analytics could not be fulfilled. The concept of self-service business intelligence (SSBI) opens the gates to democratized business intelligence for everybody. Yet the implementation of SSBI tools is proving to be extremely difficult and has led to the consequence that many SSBI projects remain unsuccessful. This thesis therefore examines the influence of self-service business intelligence on organizational structures and business processes. Furthermore, assumptions made by contemporary industry studies and best practice reports are evaluated. The case study of the Power BI implementation project at a German medical and safety technology manufacturer successfully identifies real-life challenges. Moreover, the thesis stresses the importance of data governance and data infrastructures in the context of SSBI.
