A sintaxe popular: um estudo das ideias linguísticas de Julio Moreira / The popular syntax: a study of the linguistic ideas by Julio Moreira

Valéria de Araujo Pereira 30 April 2015 (has links)
This work aims to investigate, from a historiographical perspective, the Linguistic ideas by Julio Gonçalves Moreira (1854-1911) with regard to the concept of popular Portuguese syntax. Therefore, based on theoretical and methodological assumptions of the History of Linguistic Ideas, as the model of Sylvain Auroux (1992, 2008), the study presents Retrospective Horizon, and the Prospective Horizon for the work and Portuguese philologist. He poured his corpus Estudos da Língua Portuguesa, Vol I and II, respectively published in 1907 and 1913. We sought to demonstrate that, by hypothesis, in the design of Julio Moreira, the popular syntax is one of the old Latin forms present in archaic Portuguese and preserved the \"language of the people.\" For the author, the popular language is conservative because it keeps traces of language stages near Vulgar Latin. Also aimed to show by the comparison of ideas as the author contributed to linguistic discussions of great importance for the time, such as the concepts of analogy and folk etymology that applied to the study of Portuguese. Similarly important are their psychological explanations for said syntactic facts, as well as its anticipation analysis on the use of certain expressions of situation not only used in the popular phrase, but also in the conversation of educated people of his time. In conclusion, the studies of linguistic ideas of the author investigated here, your contribution - especially in relation to the study of popular syntax - is of great relevance for the conformation of philosophical and linguistic studies of the Portuguese.

When located near by the sea cost, these floodplains can have influence of the sea water, resulting in the presence of sulfide soils, which, if drained, can develop sulfuric horizons. The sulfuric horizons are mainly characterized by high levels of acidity and exchangeable aluminum, which can result in serious environmental impact to the ecosystem. The agriculture use of these soils requires a deep knowledge of soil physical, chemical and mineralogical properties, in order to support the development of sustainable management practices. The objective of this work was to study chemical and mineralogical properties of acid sulfate soils formed in the floodplain of Camocim river, Caaporã municipality, state of Paraíba. The main aim was to support decisions on the viability of sugarcane cropping in these areas. Soils were characterized morphologically and samples were collected along a transect from the high land towards the river channel. Besides the routine physical, chemical and mineralogical analysis, other determinations were carried out involving total sulfur, incubation pH, soluble anions, electrical conductivity of the saturation extract and sequential iron extraction. The soils were classified as: Argisolic,Dystric Tb Haplic Gleysol (P1) Typic Sapric Sulfide Organosol (P2), Organosolic Orthic Sulfide Gleysol (P3 and P4). Soil distribution in the landscape of the Camocim river floodplain is mainly related to the relief, which determines drainage, water table and, consequently, the soil forming processes related to water excess. The presence of sulfuric horizons occur at the surface, in the very poorly drained soil profiles, and at 43 cm depth in the poorly drained soils close to the river channel. The studied acid sulfate soils do not have salinity at present time, and the high electrical conductivity is determined by the formation sulfuric acid (H+ + SO4 2-) from pyrite oxidation. Sugarcane crop decay in the floodplain of Camocim River, after one year of cultivation was a consequente of the sulfuric horizon formation after the implementation of the drainage system in soils with sulfide materials. The main soil minerals, indentified by X-ray diffraction, in the clay fraction were jarosite quartz, feldspars, kaolinite, smectite (essentially montmorillonite), illite and gibbsite. Quartz and feldspars were the minerals identified in sand and silt fractions. The results of the iron sequential extraction showed predominance of non crystalline iron oxides and very low amounts or absence of iron associated with pyrite, reflecting the advanced oxidation stage determined by the drainage system.

Genesis of dark subsurface horizons of soils in area of Pelotas Batholith, RS.

Botelho, Márcio Ramos 02 February 2011 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-08-20T13:25:36Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese_Marcio_Ramos_Botelho.pdf: 7363575 bytes, checksum: 7093095943e8e185a759d62d75529be8 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-02-02 / Dark subsurface horizons with morphological characteristics similar to sombric horizonts have been found in southern Brazil, particularly in the higher areas of the Pelotas Batholith, located in the eastern portion of the Escudo Sul-rio-grandense. The sombric horizon, initially identified by soil scientists who worked in the Belgian Congo, constitutes a diagnostic horizon in soil classification systems of FAO and Soil Taxonomy, but not in the Brazilian system. The conception of sombric horizon in these classification systems is of a free draining subsurface horizon, containing iluvial humus not associated with aluminum or dispersible by sodium, with value and/or lower chroma than the overlying horizon. In the field it can be differentiated from the buried A horizon by monitoring lateral variations and in the laboratory by analyzing thin sections. The mechanisms responsible for the genesis of the sombric horizon are still poorly understood, although most authors agree on the illuvial humus origin and that it constitutes a diagnostic horizon. Considering the need to characterize the occurrence of such horizons in the region and the possible reasons for its genesis this work aimed to describe the occurrence of soil profiles exhibiting dark subsurface horizons with similar morphology to the sombric horizon in the region of Pelotas Batholith and to investigate the organic matter involved in the process. To achieve this goal physical, chemical, morphological, mineralogical and isotopic studies were performed in ten soil profiles with dark subsurface horizons, two of them without the sombric morphological characteristics and another one with morphological evidence of buried A horizon, and two degraded areas. The results showed that: a) the position of the dark subsurface horizons coincide with the A2, AB, BA horizons, top of B horizon or AC/CR; b) the horizons with morphology similar to sombric are not buried horizons, as indicated by particle size analysis, mineralogy, morphology and lateral variations of these horizons in the field, c) the fractionation of humic substances indicated a process of illuviation of organic matter, especially humic acids, for all soil samples, showing that the illuviation of organic material occurs not only in profiles with sombric horizons; d) the absence of the E horizon, associated with the Al + ½ Feo criteria, optical density of oxalate extract, chemical fractionation and significant presence of illuvial subsurface cutans indicate that the podzolization process is only incipient in the soil profiles; d) the C isotopic composition indicate that a part of the dark subsurface horizons have organic matter from C4-type plants (grasslands), differing from to the present. In other profiles, there is a mixture of C3 plants (forests) and C4 plants with little or no variation from the current vegetation, suggesting that the genesis of these horizons is not related only to changes in vegetation; f) a significant part of the soils located on the Pelotas Batholith present are not adequately classified in the Brazilian soil classification system, g) the adoption of the horizon or sombric character and changes in the Argissolos Bruno-Acinzentados suborder in future editions of the Brazilian System of Soil Classification would fit better a significant part of the soil profiles of the study area.

Oberlan Christo Romão 18 October 2017 (has links)
In this research, we study the multi-period two-dimensional cutting problem with usable leftover, which consists of cutting objects to produce a set of items. We assume a finite planning horizon with a finite amount of periods between the initial and final times. First we consider a deterministic version in which we know, a priori, the set of ordered items and the cost of the objects at each period. Some of the leftovers generated during the cutting process of the ordered items in a period may be used as objects in the future. The leftovers that can be used in the future are called usable leftovers. In general, a leftover is considered usable if it has dimensions equal to or greater than that of some item from a predefined list for the period. The goal is to minimize the total cost of the objects used to cut the set of ordered items of the entire considered horizon. If there are solutions with the same cost, we wish to find one that, at the end of the considered time horizon, maximizes the value of the remaining usable leftovers. We present a mathematical model of the problem using a bilevel formulation, which is transformed into a mixed integer linear programming model, due to the characteristics of the problem. Considering the difficulty in solving the developed model, we propose a heuristic approach based on approximate dynamic programming (ADP) to deal with the proposed problem. Other options based on the rolling horizon and relax-and-fix strategies are also considered. We also consider the scenario where we do not know in advance the set of ordered items and the cost of the objects, but we have information about the probability distributions of both. In this case, we present an approach based on approximate dynamic programming to estimate the best strategy to be followed at each period. We compared the results obtained by the ADP with the results found by a greedy method. In suitable scenarios, the results show that the ADP achieves superior solutions to the greedy method.

The temporal dimension in search models : horizon, age, experience

Le Duigou, Sarah 05 December 2012 (has links)
In economics, it is today usual to use search models to modelize labor market, and assess public policy on this market. In this thesis, we introduce the age heterogeneity of workers in a search model which takes into account both labor market flows and endogenous wage distribution. We show that this heterogeneity affects greatly agents' economic behaviors in terms of wage setting, search intensity, and matches' productivity, by its two dimensions, the workers' experience and the workers' horizon. This model allows us to decompose the wage trajectory of workers over their life cycle into three main channels : the wage game, the human capital accumulation and the presence of institutions. Besides, we show that this last channel, as composed of unemployment benefits indexed on workers' last wage, accounts for the simultaneous strong wage progression and weak workers' mobility observed in the French data. Yet, the horizon can also be technological : firms' embodied technology becomes obsolete with time. Given this technological horizon, the presence of tenure-growing unemployement benefits yields a distorsion which fastens obsolescence. In this context, only a tenure-growing firing tax allows the economy to reach its social optimum.

The information paradox - Horizon structures and its effects on the quasinormal mode gravitational radiation from binary merger ringdowns : Gravitational echoes from reflective near horizon structures

Vikaeus, Anton January 2017 (has links)
Classical theory cannot provide a satisfying scenario for a unitary thermodynamic evolution of black holes. To preserve information one requires quantum mechanical effects on scales reaching beyond the traditional horizon radius. Therefore, common to many of the theories attempting to resolve the paradox is the existence of exotic horizon structures. The recent advent of gravitational wave astronomy provides a possible means for detecting the existence of such structures through gravitational wave emission in the ringdown phase of binary black hole mergers. Such emission is described by quasinormal modes (QNMs) in which the gravitational waves originates outside the black hole, in the vicinity of the photon spheres. Requiring reflective properties of the horizon structure results in the existence of gravitational echoes that may be detected by facilities such as LIGO etc.. This thesis studies geodesic motion of such echoes in the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole. Depending on the extent of the horizon structure, and the particular mode of emission, one can expect different timescales for the echoes. For a horizon structure extending outside the traditional horizon of a , black hole one would ideally find echoes appearing as integer multiples of after the primary signal. The time delay is expected to increase by at least an order of magnitude if one lets . The expected echo timescales for gravitational waves emitted from any point around the black hole, in arbitrary modes, is an interesting further study.

A Study of Sediment Accretion Dynamics in Mature and Restored Tidal Freshwater Forested Wetlands in the James River Watershed using Surface Elevation Tables and Marker Horizons

Lopez, Ronaldo 01 January 2017 (has links)
Sediment accretion and elevation change in tidal forests, and the corresponding ability of these wetlands to keep pace with sea-level rise (SLR), represent data gaps in our understanding of wetland sustainability. Surface Elevation Tables and marker horizons were installed in three mature tidal forests and a restored tidal marsh, allowing us to measure elevation change, accretion, and subsidence. Additionally, we measured predictor variables to test for their significance in explaining accretion and elevation change rates. Mean accretion at our sites was 11.67 +/- 3.01 mm yr-1 and mean elevation change was -20.22 +/- 8.10 mm yr-1, suggesting subsidence occurring beneath the sites. Processes contributing to accretion and elevation change at our sites may be driven by hydrologic patterns. Comparing our elevation trends with SLR trends suggests that our study sites may not keep pace with SLR. However, we may be observing short-term oscillations that do not indicate true long-term trends.

Crisis strategies in BP's Deepwater Horizon response : An image repair and situational crisis communication study

Johansson, Mikael January 2017 (has links)
The BP Deepwater Horizon crisis in 2010 was one the largest catastrophes in the history of the oil industry. BP was sued over the disaster, and lost several billion dollars. This study examines the crisis response strategies and/or image repair strategies, which can be found in BP's press releases following the Deepwater Horizon crisis. In particular, the study looks closer at what established crisis communication strategies could be discerned in the material, and how they are used discursively. The theories used were the Image Repair Theory (IRT) and the Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT). The results show that BP utilized a number of different established crisis response strategies and/or image repair strategies in their crisis communication work in the press releases. These strategies were concern, corrective action, ingratiation, transcendence, differentiation, denial, shifting the blame/scapegoating, defeasibility, compassion and attacking the accuser. They were used discursively by the CEO by expressing sympathy, promising that a similar event will never happen again, by stating appreciation for and praising the leadership of the U.S. President and public sector. What is more, it is used by describing in detail how the solution process progresses, by stating what the causes of the crisis were, by describing other involved actors' lack of taking responsibility and by establishing a fraud hotline. The main conclusions of the study are that BP used several crisis strategies in their press release s, though rather inconsistently. Additionally, BP used the strategies in an ambiguous manner, and changed strategies over time. Lastly, one main conclusion is also that a company is prepared to utilize crisis communication strategies in their practical communications work, though not entirely in the way prescribed by the theories.

Smart and Sustainable Cities in EU Research and Innovation Strategic Framework / Chytrá a udržitelná města v kontextu vědecké a inovační strategie EU

Horniecká, Marie January 2016 (has links)
The thesis explores how the EU support to research and innovation towards urban sustainability is designed, what the existing EU intiatives striving for achieving smart and sustainable cities are. The analysis of theoretical approaches forms the basis for developing the definition of smart and sustainable city for the purpose of this thesis. An overview of the principal EU strategic documents which address urban sustainability together with European networks is provided in order to demonstrate the linkage to the research Framework Programmes. A separate chapter is devoted to the analysis of the most pressing challenges European cities face nowadays. Database of EU funded research and innovation calls and projects is examined (E-CORDA). Calls and projects related to urban areas are identified and juxtaposed with the urban problems. Final recommendations concern with social aspects of sustainability which should be, in the author's opinion, addressed in future EU research Framework Programmes with a particular attention.

Effects of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on Deep Sea Fishes

Leary, Arianne Ella 01 January 2015 (has links)
The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (DWH) released about 4.4 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), making it one of the largest oil spills in U.S. history. Additionally, the depth of the spill (i.e., 1500 meters) created a unique research opportunity because most oil spills occur at the surface and affect coastal rather than deepwater habitats. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are the most toxic components of oil, and are often the focus of oil exposure studies. PAHs are quickly metabolized by vertebrates; therefore, indicators of biological responses to PAH exposure (PAH “biomarkers”) such as the levels of PAH detoxification enzymes and the resulting metabolites are commonly used to examine oil exposure. This study measured multiple PAH biomarkers including hepatic activity of the PAH detoxification enzymes cytochrome P4501a1 (CYP1A) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST), as well as biliary PAH metabolites in deep sea sharks and bony fishes from areas affected by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Samples were collected from 2011-2013 from seven species of sharks, with special focus on the four most abundant deep sea species: Centrophorus niakang, Centrophorus cf granulosus, Squalus cubensis and Squalus cf mitsikurii. Overall enzyme activity was low in these sharks, yet it was higher in oiled sites compared to reference locations. Additionally some species showed declining CYP1A activity since the time of the oil spill, suggesting exposure to CYP-inducing compounds during the beginning of the survey period. Last, PAHs of a petrogenic nature were more abundant in oiled sites compared to reference locations. Overall, this project provides the much need biomarker data for sharks as well as insight on exposure and metabolism of PAHs in deep sea sharks after the DWH.
