Building sustainable settlements in Chimoio, Mozambique : the sustainability of using unfired adobe bricks to construct shelterSavaio, Dieter Santos 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis ((MPhil (Sustainable Development Planning and Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT:
Adequate shelter for the majority of the Mozambican population is still not a reality. Conventional building materials are not affordable for the poor and the governmental policies do not put much focus on the issue of housing. Also, the consideration of environmental issues in the construction industry is becoming relevant concerning the process of sustainability promotion.
In most instances, communities in Mozambique have been using local alternative materials to build their houses and unfired adobe brick is one of these materials. Compared to conventional materials, unfired adobe brick is relatively cheaper and has low negative environmental impacts. This study analysed the use of this material in Mozambique from a sustainability viewpoint to find out whether there were opportunities to construct sustainable housing for local communities.
To gather information regarding socio-economic, environmental and technical dimensions of the use of unfired adobe brick, the main research strategy privileged the use of a qualitative approach where the data collection methods involved interviews, focus group discussions, observation and direct involvement of the researcher in practical work.
Findings indicate that low costs related to the use of unfired adobe brick address the problem of affordability for the majority of local people. Local availability of suitable soils, minimal processing, use of renewable sources of energy for processing the material and recyclability/reusability all indicate that this material has very little environmental impact. Identified stresses (moisture) affecting unfired adobe structures can be avoided through low-impact methods of earth stabilization and specific design measures.
It is concluded that unfired adobe brick has the potential to contribute to the provision of sustainable housing in Mozambique. In order for this to happen, there needs to be:
More research on construction methods applicable to the Mozambican context;
The introduction of construction codes related to adobe construction; Training of local communities in adobe construction; The creation of housing policies; and Investigation into the opportunities offered by unfired adobe brick concerning sustainability. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING:

Utilização de macrófitas aquáticas na produção de adobe: um estudo de caso no reservatório de Salto Grande (Americana - SP) / Utilization of aquatic macrophytes in the adobes production: a case study in the Salto Grande reservoir (Americana SP)Faria, Obede Borges 28 October 2002 (has links)
This work intends to optimise the utilization of aquatic macrophyte biomass in the adobe (a sun-dried mud brick) production, based on the study of the physical and mechanical characteristics of these bricks and the macrophytes biomass estimate as well as their chemical characteristics. The research was developed in the Salto Grande Reservoir region, in Americana (a town in São Paulo State, Brazil). This lake is located in an area of high urbanization and industrialization level, with common dwelling deficit, which is in advanced artificial eutrophication process by human activity action. The aquatic macrophytes found in that place (Brachiaria arrecta, Eichhornia crassipes and Pistia stratiotes) present a high level of heavy metals and nutrients that make impracticable their utilization as forage or fertilizer. The biomass utilization in the construction of materials appears here as an alternative of integrated management of the lake in the stabilization/solidification (or encapsulation") of these chemical substances, in addition to the fact that it makes possible the self-building of low cost dwellings. The other biomass function is to stabilize the soil that has a high clay concentration (59%, with 21% silt and 20% sandy) and would suffer a large drawing back during the drying process, with the introduction of excessive fissures. This biomass addition was made to reduce these fissures and the specific mass of the bricks. Besides, the research results show that, even though the adobe bricks are perhaps the oldest manufactured building material, their application persists practicable mainly in the sustainability hopes for being a completely ecological building material and adequate for the tropical regions.

Assessment of the influence of environmental conditions in historical adobe buildings through long-term structural monitoringZonno, Giacomo 11 February 2019 (has links)
Historical earthen buildings are vulnerable to external solicitations, as earthquakes, tsunamis, environmental conditions and others, and, often, they are under unacceptable risks. For all these aspects, earthen buildings need an indispensable intervention but also an accurate diagnosis to respect the modern restoration principles. Nowadays, the research field related to the structural analysis of existing earthen buildings is very far from a complete and exhaustive knowledge. For studying these types of buildings, experimental investigations are mandatory. The thesis has the ambitious goal to fill the lack of knowledge about the dynamic behavior of historical earthen buildings. The work started with the study of effects of temperature and humidity on the “earth material”. For this reason, single adobe walls were built and analyzed by a continuous monitoring of the internal and external environmental parameters and dynamic properties to understand their behavior as simple adobe construction systems. The main challenges in this stage were the development of a suitable algorithm to automatically identify the dynamic parameters, the study of the internal distribution of temperature and humidity, and, the analysis of the environmental effects on the long-term monitoring of simple adobe systems. The results showed a good heat storing capacity of the walls and the existence of an internal thermal flow connected to a combined effect of air temperature, wind, solar radiation, and wall orientation. Furthermore, environmental seasonal and daily effects were first identified and subsequently isolated from the structural response, demonstrating a clear inverse relationship between temperature and dynamic properties. After this first stage, the application of the achieved knowledge was applied to a real case study to verify the obtained results in a larger scale. The Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas was chosen as case study. This church was built in the sixteenth century and represents a suitable example of historical earthen building. This architecture is one of the most amazing and beautiful example of religious art, solemn testimony of the Andean culture. To this church, a long-term monitoring system was applied for a better understanding of the earthen building behavior. The results indicated that he environmental variable affect the structural behavior at two levels: a seasonal long-term influence was detected as well as a daily short- term one. Seasonal effects caused variations of up to 8% in natural frequencies, and shorter-term influences were also verified causing variations of up 3.8%. Daily results showed a delayed effect of the environmental conditions in the structural response. Finally, multiple linear regression models were developed using the absolute humidity as independent variable to successfully predict the long-term frequency variation of the analyzed case study for structural health assessment purpose. / Tesis

A Mobile Deaf-to-hearing communication aid for medical diagnosisMutemwa, Muyowa January 2011 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / Many South African Deaf people use their mobile phones for communication with SMSs yet they would prefer to converse in South African Sign Language. Deaf people with a capital `D' are different from deaf or hard of hearing as they primarily use sign language to communicate. This study explores how to design and evaluate a prototype that will allow a Deaf person using SASL to tell a hearing doctor how s/he is feeling and provide a way for the doctor to respond. A computer{based prototype was designed and evaluated with the Deaf people in a previous study. Results from the user trial of the computer{based mock{up indicated that Deaf users would like to see the prototype on a cell phone. Those user trial results, combined with our own user survey results conducted with Deaf people, are used as requirements. We built a prototype for a mobile phone browser by embedding SASL videos inside XHTML pages using Adobe Flash. The prototype asks medical questions using SASL videos. These questions are arranged in an organized way that helps in identifying a medical problem. The answers to the questions are then displayed in English and shown to the doctor on the phone. A content authoring tool was also designed and implemented. The content authoring tool is used for populating the prototype in a context free manner allowing for plug and play scenarios such as a doctor's office, Department of Home A airs or police station. A focus group consisting of Deaf people was conducted to help in the design and pilot trial of the system. A final user trial was conducted with more than thirty Deaf people and the results are presented and analyzed. Data is collected with questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and video recordings. The results indicate that most of the Deaf people found the system easy to learn, easy to navigate through, did not get lost and understood the sign language in the videos on the mobile phone. The hand gestures and facial expressions on the sign language videos were clear. Most of them indicated they would like to use the system for free, and that the system did not ask too many questions. Most of them were happy with the quality of the sign language videos on the mobile phone and would consider using the system in real life. Finally they felt their private information was safe while using the system. Previous issue date: 2005-10-21 / The production of the red pottery brick, made traditionally with clay, is a technique that is already stabled. However, in spite of the little complexity that involves the conventional process of these bricks production, it are exposed to many problems that begin in the fase of exploration of the mines, the problems get worse because of the lack of the clay's characterization, and they continue through the steps of the dough preparation, conformation
of the products, the drying and the burning process. The wastefulness is shown and so is the low quality of the material produced. Among other factors, the high use of energy in the burning makes the cost of this material inaccessible to the low income consumer. Besides this, the destruction of the environment around the mines and the use of native vegetation to produce wood - the most used fuel in the pottery industry - make serious environmental damage. The production technique of a new type of simple brick (adobe), that has low cost and no environmental damage, can be the viable altemative to lower the cost of this part of the civil construction, and, consequently, in the building of cheaper houses. In this paper, the results of the mechanical resistance of the adobe brick are shown,
using in its composition, clay, natural vegetable fibers, cement and plaster in a process that is completely handcrafted and manual. It is intented to make clear that are possible alternatives to be put in practice, with the
simple process, using "raw earth" that has been used in the construction of houses in thousands of years, trying to solve these severe problems. Analysis and tests were performed to find results that could prove the possibility of the utilization of this kind of material. Other studies are in progress, and the new researches are necessary to enrich this work, but it stays the certainty that there is potential to produce bricks from adobe, as an alternative

Centro de Visitantes para la Reserva Salinas y Aguada Blanca / Visitor Center for the Salinas y Aguada Blanca ReserveRivera Rodríguez, Mariana Victoria 05 November 2019 (has links)
Our country has great wealth in its territory, natural areas, archaeological remains, among others that endow it with great tourist potential. However, many of these are unknown and considered as places of passage. This is the actual situation of the Salinas and Aguada Blanca Nature Reserve, located between the city of Arequipa and the Colca Canyon. It’s a beautiful place with attractive landscapes, remains of cave paintings, and home of vegetation and fauna in danger of extinction.
The reserve is traveled by thousands of tourists, so the approach is to consolidate the Pampa Cañahuas Village, a midpoint on the route and place where today there is a rest stop where tourists can consume some typical beverage or food and buy handicrafts made by the villagers.
The new design of the town is developed around the main square and some minor squares called "Eco-Patios" with which it seeks to provide the town with a self-sustainable and bioclimatic development. Likewise, the main element of the town is the Museum, a place that will serve to publicize the Reserve. In addition to the internal exhibition, the proposal includes spaces that relate directly to the landscape, allowing visitors to interact with their surroundings through views.
The Museum and town, have the purpose of making known the Reserve, not only its tourist attractions but also the inhabitants, a modern “Tambo” / Tesis
