Springtime for Caesar : Vergil's Georgics and the defence of Octavian

Bunni, Adam January 2010 (has links)
Vergil’s Georgics was published in 29 BCE, at a critical point in the political life of Octavian-Augustus. Although his position at the head of state had been confirmed by victory at Actium in 31, his longevity was threatened by his reputation for causing bloodshed during the civil wars. This thesis argues that Vergil, in the Georgics, presents a defence of Octavian against criticism of his past, in order to safeguard his future, and the future of Rome. Through a complex of metaphor and allusion, Vergil engages with the weaknesses in Octavian’s public image in order to diminish their damaging impact. Chapter One examines the way in which the poet invokes and complements the literary tradition of portraying young men as destructive, amorous creatures, through his depiction of iuvenes in the Georgics, in order to emphasise the inevitability of youthful misbehaviour. Since Octavian is still explicitly a iuvenis, he cannot be held accountable for his actions up to this point, including his role in the civil wars. The focus of Chapters Two and Three of this thesis is Vergil’s presentation of the spring season in the Georgics. Vergil’s preoccupation with spring is unorthodox in the context of agricultural didactic; under the influence of the Lucretian figure of Venus, Vergil moulds spring into a symbol of universal creation in nature, a metaphor for a projected revival of Roman affairs under Octavian’s leadership which would subsequently dominate the visual art of the Augustan period. Vergil’s spring is as concerned with the past as it is the future. Vergil stresses the fact that destructive activity can take place in spring, in the form of storms and animal violence; the farmer’s spring labor is characterised as a war against nature, which culminates in the horrific slaughter of oxen demanded by bugonia. In each case destruction is revealed as a necessary prerequisite for some form of creation: animal reproduction, increased crop yield, a renewed population of bees. Thus, the spring creation of a new Rome under Octavian will come as a direct result of the bloodshed of the civil wars, a cataclysm whose horrors are not denied, but whose outcome will ultimately be positive. Octavian is assimilated to Jupiter in his Stoic guise: a providential figure who sends fire and flood to Earth in order to improve mankind.

Arthur Bretaňský a jeho nároky na anglický trůn / Arthur I, Duke of Brittany and His Claim on the English Throne

Malý, Jan January 2015 (has links)
The death of king Richard The Lion Heart in 1199 caused considerable troubles to the Angevin empire, when there again raised for english medieval history very pressing question - who is legitimate successor to the throne? There were two possible pretendents, both had comparable claim to the crown. First of them was Richard's brother John, the second his nephew, at this time twelve years old duke of Brittany Arthur. Legal customs of this period theoretically admitted the succession of both men, because there were no unified successorial usage and every single part of the Angevin empire looked on this problem differently. While John was generally accepted without problems in Normandy and then he was crowned king of England, the toughest fight blazed out in Anjou, Maine and Touraine, where support was given to Arthur. He had also support of king of France Philip Augustus, who understood well, that Arthur is an ideal tool for his schemes to elimination and mastery over the Angevin empire. Whole long struggle between the nephew and his uncle was finsihed by Arthur's capture in the summer of 1202 and his subsequent death in 1203. However king John was not able to stop the dissolution of Plantagenet empire, which was reduced to the duchy of Aquitaine at the beginning of 13th century.

Edition, traduction et commentaire de Cassius Dion, Histoire romaine, livres 52 et 53 / Edition and Translation with a Commentary of Cassius Dio’s Roman History, Books 52 and 53

Bellissime, Marion 09 July 2013 (has links)
This thesis is a translated edition of Books 52 and 53 of Cassius Dio’s Roman History with a commentary. The last French edition of Cassius Dio’s Roman History is now obsolete. Moreover there is no modern translation of this text. For a few years an up-to-date edition, with a translation, has been in progress, which includes our work. In Books 52 and 53, the author, a Greek historian and a Severian senator, describes the evolution of the Roman institutions between Republic and Principate. His analyses are based on his own political knowledge, his official duties and on his study of his Greek predecessors (such as Polybius or Dionysius of Halicarnassus). His point of view is most of the time original. In books 52 and 53, he focuses on the monarchic transition and the changes that affected the constitution and the institutions. The most important actors of the “revolution” (Augustus, Agrippa and Maecenas) are delivering probably fictive speeches that illustrate this change. There is also in these books an interesting literary work. Dio is to be considered as an heir of two traditions: the debate over the best constitution (as old as Herodotus at least) and the rhetoric declamation. Both of them are at work in the speeches of books 52 and 53. The well-known debate between Maecenas and Agrippa (Book 52) has thoroughly been studied but rarely in connection with the other speeches of the Augustan books. Besides, the literary part of these texts has been, most of the time, used to criticize them. This work lays stress on two (in our opinion) linked questions: how valuable is the historical testimony of Cassius Dio on this key period? And what do the speeches bring (besides the rhetorical display) to Dio’s historiographical project?

J.-C. - Ier siècle ap. J.-C.) / Romanization and everyday life : small finds italic type in Gaul (IIe s. av. J.-C. - Ier s. ap. J.-C.)

Barbau, Clémentine 27 March 2015 (has links)
For the last two centuries before our era, italic type objects, which means objects that are characterizing the material culture of Tardo-republican Italia, are progressively appearing in Gaul. The identification of these everyday objects and their typological and contextual analysis allow a renewed approach of the Gaul romanization phenomenon. The objective of this thesis is to highlight, the chronological, spatial and cultural modalities of the diffusion of such furniture. The comparison of the results with the data provided by the ceramological and architectural studies allows to improve the description of the acculturation process. The behavioral diversity towards the reception of exogenous furniture is underlined by the nature of the sites and the diversity of the considered objects. Local elites, whether by participating in commercial exchanges or by joining the army, have played a major role in the interactions with Italia, from the diffusion of these objects to the integration of the new italic models.

The Origins of Three Meroitic Bronze Oil Lamps in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Sakoutis, Stephanie Joan 05 June 2009 (has links)
This thesis discusses three bronze oil lamps found in the ancient city of Meroë, in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Scholars have considered the lamps to be imported from Hellenistic Egypt, but careful examination has revealed that the lamps were not imported. The lamps were locally made in Meroë; the materials and technology needed to create bronze lamps were available to Meroitic craftsmen.

The Dramaturgical Structure of Biographical picture by Hollywood Film Industry an by Italian Television

ARLANCH, FRANCESCO 23 March 2007 (has links)
The dissertation explores the distinctive structural features of the biographical pictures produced by the U.S. film industry and by the Italian TV. Assuming that a biographical picture is a film that dramatizes the life of an actual person, we propose here a new interpretation: in a biographical picture the dramatic structure expresses a judgement of redemption or damnation on the protagonist and his life story.
