Male perspectives on gender violence in South Africa: the case of Nkonkobe municipal area

Danga, Talent January 2008 (has links)
The study explores the experiences of men who perpetrated violence against women in the domestic sphere. The study’s overarching concern is that violence has been largely seen as a women’s problem and not an issue that is central to men and yet in most cases are the perpetrators of this violence. Consequently, men have not been targeted in initiatives that curb domestic violence (Salo, 2005). It is in this frame of reference that this study saw it imperative to focus on the male perspective of gender violence. The study aims to find factors that contribute to male violence and in turn recommend practical and appropriate strategies of dealing with male violence perpetrators. The study drew its theoretical framework largely from the feminist theory, systems theory and the social learning theory in-order to gain insight into the different frameworks for making judgement about male violence against women. Feminists hold the view that, starting with people’s experiences is a powerful tool that provides the rational for their studies. The study was therefore qualitative in nature as it sought to gather men’s experiences of violent against their spouses; semi-structured interviews were utilized during data collection. A purposive sampling method was utilised to select ten men who were known to have perpetrated violence against their partners and five key informants with special knowledge on domestic violence. The research was conducted through the Department of Social Development in Alice in the Eastern Cape, which facilitated a trusting relationship between the researcher and its clients. The findings established that violence is used to maintain control and power over women. Men invoked hegemonic discourses as violence is employed as an instrument to suppress women, mostly in instances were women question their prerogatives and undermine their authority. It was evidenced that cultural practices such as ‘lobola’ (dowry) usually contribute to men’s use of violence. Most of the respondents understood violence from the physical dimension only, as violence was equated to beating and slapping. Added to that was the respondents’ inadequate understanding of domestic violence laws and legislation. The study also established that social service providers seem not to have concrete procedures and capacity to deal with perpetrators of domestic violence. In light of the problems discussed, the study recommends effective counseling and educational programs, policy improvement, capacitation of service providers and the criminal justice system and further research as strategies for dealing with male violence in the Nkonkobe District.

The experiences of victimised women of group interventions in a psychiatric clinic in Gauteng Province

Temane, Mmasethunya Anna 20 August 2012 (has links)
M.Cur. / Violence stalks the streets of our erstwhile civilised cities and towns, and has also involved too many homes, transforming them from places of protection into pits of powerlessness and victimization. No immunization to this epidemic is afforded by culture, social class, economic states, education or ever religious affiliation. It is time to lift the shroud of silence and to shine the spotlight of truth on this social dilemma (Couden, 1999: 5). This research begins with the journey of awareness, which is intended to lead to healing, mental health and wholeness for the victimised women. It is intended to give victimised women a voice, since they are the experts of their own lives. Through sharing of their experiences, it is hoped that such awareness will positively impact our families, communities, churches and the wider society. The objectives of this research are to: • Explore and describe the experiences of victimised women of group interventions in a psychiatric clinic. • Formulate guidelines for the promotion of mental health of victimised women of group interventions. • In phase one of the research, the researcher made conclusions that the group interventions had an effect on victimised women. Group interventions enabled these women to understand that they can do something about being victimised. The main themes that came out were ventilating of emotions, support for each other in the group interventions, a sense of being empowered and a sense of forgiveness towards their perpetrators. In phase two guidelines were described for the advanced psychiatric nursespecialist to facilitate and promote the mental health of victimised women. An empowerment programme based on the suggestions given by Goodman and Fallon (113) described on the survey list by Dickoff et al (1968: 423). Conclusions, limitations and recommendations for the nursing practice, nursing education and research in nursing have been made.

Autobiography as self-defense in the works of Agnes Newton-Keith and Michelle Kennedy

Heim, Robin 01 January 2010 (has links)
This thesis examines the captivity narrative, Three Came Home, written in 1947 by Agnes Newton-Keith, and the poverty narrative, Without a Net: Middle Class and Homeless (with Kids) in America: My Story, written in 2005 by Michelle Kennedy. When examined together through the lens of Trauma Theory, these narratives provide evidence of how similar the survival skills and strategies are between the American female POW's and the American females experiencing downward mobility. This thesis will also show how language uncovers and decodes the presence of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder not often associated with women in poverty.

An examination of physical and non-physical abuse as correlates of depression and self-esteem in battered women

Miskofski, Patricia Ann 01 January 2001 (has links)
In light of the existing literature and research conducted in the area of domestic violence, several recurrent symptoms continue to surface as a result of both physical and non-physical abuse. Two of the most prevalent psychological symptoms requiring intervention tend to be depression and low self-esteem. Therefore, it is the intention of this study to empirically examine the type of abuse female victims of domestic violence experience and its link to their psychological distress. Specifically, it is hypothesized that victims of non-physical abuse will be more likely to experience low self-esteem than depression. Victims of physical abuse will have a greater prevalence of depression than low self-esteem.

Att våga se, fråga och agera : En litteraturöversikt om sjuksköterskans erfarenheter av att vårda våldsuttsatta kvinnor

Andersson, Jessica, Mellén Molldén, Linette, Thorén, Lina January 2020 (has links)
Background: Intimate partner violence, is defined as committing harmful acts towards an intimate partner. Men’s violence against women leads to severe damage. The nurse plays an important role when screening for violence, though the experience of poor treatment from nurses is common among abused women Aim: The aim was to describe the nurse’s experiences of caring for women that has been exposed to men’s violence in an intimate relationship. Method: A literary review of 12 articles with qualitative design that were inductively analyzed using Friberg's five steps. Articles has been searched by using CINAHL, PsycINFO, and manually.  Results: The result showed that nurses described insufficient knowledge caused by lack of strategies, preconceptions and lack of routines. The result also described the nurses’ experience of being human, caused by the emotions and lack of time in the nurse-patient relationship with the abused women.  Conclusion: When abused women seek care, the nurse plays an important role supporting and helping the woman. Despite this responsibility, the nurses lack ability to manage a confirmation of abuse. More knowledge in the subject showed to be essential when performing person centered care for abused women.

Abused women with a foreign background from the social worker's perspective

Damen, Randa Naem, Hafezi, Mana January 2020 (has links)
In this study, the topic of men’s violence against women has been highlighted. Men’s violence against women is a societal problem that occurs in various social groups, ages and cultures. The study conducts semi-structured interviews with six social workers to examine their experiences working with abused women with foreign backgrounds. The collected data were analyzed through thematic analysis method based on: the normalization process, empowerment and break-up process. The study showed that some of the main factors that made it difficult for women were children, emotional ties, financial and housing dependencies. This study also confirmed previous studies which showed that women with a foreign background are particularly vulnerable and thus find it more difficult to break up a relationship due to societal norms, language difficulties, social networks and because of their ignorance of society. This study also shows that the interviewed social workers found that motivation and support given to violated women in various processes made the break-up process easier for these women. However, the social workers encountered some difficulties working with women with a foreign background, such as communication difficulties.
