Methodology to Derive Resource Aware Context Adaptable Architectures for Field Programmable Gate Arrays

The design of a common architecture that can support multiple data-flow patterns (or contexts) embedded in complex control flow structures, in applications like multimedia processing, is particularly challenging when the target platform is a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) with a heterogeneous mixture of device primitives. This thesis presents scheduling and mapping algorithms that use a novel area cost metric to generate resource aware context adaptable architectures. Results of a rigorous analysis of the methodology on multiple test cases are presented. Results are compared against published techniques and show an area savings and execution time savings of 46% each.

Entwurf adaptierbarer Signaturen für Karten aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum

Die Gestaltung der Symbole der freien Sammlung Maki von der amerikanischen Firma Mapbox orientiert sich an den gebräuchlichen Zeichen im englischsprachigen Raum. Viele Studien bestätigen jedoch, dass Personen mit verschiedenen kulturellen und ethnischen Hintergründen Symbole anders wahrnehmen und besonders die Bedeutung der Symbole unterschiedlich interpretieren. Die amerikanischen Maki-Symbole sind somit nicht optimal für deutsche Karten geeignet. Aufgrund dessen beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Arbeit mit der optimalen Gestaltung von Positionssignaturen im deutschsprachigen Raum. Zum einen wird untersucht, inwiefern sich die Gestaltung der Maki-Symbole von den Signaturen des deutschsprachigen Raums unterscheidet. Als Ergebnis dieser Arbeit entsteht zum anderen aufgrund der Notwenigkeit eines kulturell angemessenen Repertoires an Signaturen eine Sammlung von adaptierbaren Positionssignaturen für touristische Karten des deutschsprachigen Raums. Es werden Empfehlungen zur Gestaltung von Signaturen insbesondere im Hinblick auf ein kultur-abhängiges Design erarbeitet. Außerdem erfolgt eine Analyse von Positionssignaturen in touristischen Karten des deutschsprachigen Raums bezüglich ihres Bestands und ihrer Gestaltung. Daraufhin werden die gebräuchlichsten Signaturen mit der Maki-Sammlung verglichen, um Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten zu verdeutlichen. Die Bestandsaufnahme ergibt, dass Denkmäler und Kirchen die meistverwendeten Signaturen in Karten des deutschsprachigen Raums sind. Ihre Gestaltung ist auf geometrischen Formen und den wichtigsten Merkmalen der Bezugsobjekte ausgerichtet. Das Aufrissbild, rechteckige Hintergründe und die Verwendung der Farbe Schwarz unterliegen einer hohen Beliebtheit. Im Vergleich der deutschen Signaturen mit den amerikanischen Symbolen kommt diese Arbeit zum Ergebnis, dass die deutschen Signaturen weniger bildhaft, aber kultur- und begriffsspezifischer als die amerikanischen Symbole sind. [pt] O potencial de autoconstrução de estruturas adaptáveis de bambu é o foco deste trabalho que visa ampliar a ótica do design como método projetual com ênfase no processo e não no produto final e como produtor de significados, podendo gerar autonomia de grupos em uma produção local pautada na educação ambiental/sustentabilidade. A adaptabilidade destas estruturas é um conceito central onde o objeto e o seu processo construtivo é determinado pelas condições locais de material, mão de obra e demanda de uso. O campo do design se estabeleceu no Brasil de acordo com a ótica do desenho industrial concebido nos países desenvolvidos que prioriza a fabricação, distribuição e comercialização dos objetos em grande escala. Neste contexto a atividade projetual deixa de focar no ser humano para se dedicar ao consumo em massa. Acreditamos que por meio do design é possível formar cidadãos conscientes da problemática ambiental planetária conduzindo-os através de metodologias participativas desenvolvidas no LILD PUC-Rio. O meio acadêmico (universidades e escolas) se apresenta como contexto geográfico favorável para aplicação destas metodologias que se baseiam na autonomia de grupos para a produção de objetos utilitários localmente. A esfera local/ regional é o ponto de partida para a concepção do design do objeto, determinando recursos materiais disponíveis, demandas de uso e aspectos culturais. Destacamos a metodologia de Técnicas & Convivência onde os professores-técnicos orientam os alunos-voluntários na concepção, construção e uso das estruturas adaptáveis de bambu em diversas aplicações. Neste processo os voluntários são coautores e são levados a pensar o objeto a partir de seu ciclo de vida – concepção, fabricação, uso, manutenção e descarte/pós-uso. O bambu representa um material acessível, de grande resistência com versatilidade para ser aplicado em diversos usos e é explorado aqui para fins estruturais. A abordagem transdisciplinar envolvendo os campos do design, arquitetura, engenharia e geografia nos leva a uma analise complexa do processo construtivo e do objeto final, contextualizando a produção no espaço. Em estudos de campo no Brasil e nos EUA concluímos que esta ótica de design com base na produção em esfera local/regional pautada na educação ambiental/sustentabilidade, tem grande acessibilidade e pode ser potencializada a partir da colaboração transdisciplinar para outros usos na sociedade, seja com foco na educação, na autonomia produtiva ou no uso diversificado das estruturas adaptáveis de bambu. / [en] The self-building potential of adaptable bamboo structures is the focus of this work that is aiming to enlarge the concept of design as a projetual method with emphasis on the process rather than the end product and as a producer of meanings, which can generate autonomy groups in a local production based in the environmental education / sustainability. The adaptability of these structures is a central concept where the object and its constructive process is determined by local conditions of material, labor and demand of use. The design field was established in Brazil in accordance with the perspective of industrial design in developed countries that prioritizes the production, distribution and marketing of large-scale objects. In this context the projetual activity fails to focus on the human being necessities to devote to mass consumption. We believe that through the design is possible to form citizens aware of global environmental issues leading them through participatory methodologies developed in LILD PUC-Rio. The academia (universities and schools) is presented as favorable geographic context for the application of these methodologies that are based on the autonomy of groups for the production of utilitarian objects locally. The local / regional level is the starting point for the design of object design, determining material resources available, use, social demands and cultural aspects. We are highlighting the methodology of Techniques & Coexistence where technicians-teachers guide the students-volunteers in the design, construction and use of adaptable bamboo structures in various applications. In this process the volunteers are co-authors and are led to think the object starting from his lifecycle - design, manufacture, use, maintenance and disposal / post-use. Bamboo is an accessible material; high strength with versatility to be applied to various uses and is explored here for structural purposes. The transdisciplinary approach involving the fields of design, architecture, engineering and geography leads to a complex analysis of the construction process and the final object, contextualizing the production space. In field studies in Brazil and the United States we concluded that this concept of design based in the local/regional production lined in the environmental education / sustainability, has great accessibility and can be enhanced from the transdisciplinary collaboration to other uses in society and is focusing on education, productive autonomy or diversified use of adaptable structures of bamboo.

Towards Designing and Generating User Interfaces by Using Expert Knowledge

[ES] La investigación reportada en la presente tesis doctoral se lleva a cabo a través de la metodología de la ciencia del diseño que se centra en la creación y evaluación de artefactos. En esta tesis, el principal artefacto es el novedoso enfoque para diseñar y generar interfaces de usuario utilizando el conocimiento experto. Con el fin de permitir el uso del conocimiento experto, el enfoque propuesto se basa en la reutilización de patrones de diseño que incorporan el conocimiento experto del diseño de la interfaz y proporcionan soluciones reutilizables a diversos problemas de diseño. El objetivo principal de dicho enfoque es abordar el uso de patrones de diseño a fin de garantizar que los conocimientos especializados se integren en el diseño y la generación de interfaces de usuario para aplicaciones móviles y web. Las contribuciones específicas de esta tesis se resumen a continuación: Una primera contribución consiste en el marco AUIDP que se define para apoyar el diseño y la generación de interfaces adaptativas para aplicaciones web y móviles utilizando patrones de diseño HCI. El marco propuesto abarca tanto la etapa de diseño como la de ejecución de dichas interfaces. En el momento del diseño, los modelos de patrones de diseño junto con la interfaz de usuario y el perfil de usuario se definen siguiendo una metodología de desarrollo específica. En tiempo de ejecución, los modelos creados se utilizan para permitir la selección de patrones de diseño de HCI y para permitir la generación de interfaces de usuario a partir de las soluciones de diseño proporcionadas por los patrones de diseño relevantes. La segunda contribución es un método de especificación para establecer un modelo de ontología que convierte la representación tradicional basada en texto en la representación formal del patrón de diseño de HCI. Este método adopta la metodología Neon para lograr la transición de las representaciones informales a las formales. El modelo de ontología creado se llama MIDEP, que es una ontología modular que captura el conocimiento sobre los patrones de diseño, así como la interfaz de usuario y el perfil del usuario. La tercera contribución es el IDEPAR, que es el primer sistema dentro del marco global del AUIDP. Este sistema tiene como objetivo recomendar automáticamente los patrones de diseño más relevantes para un problema de diseño dado. Se basa en un enfoque híbrido que utiliza una combinación mixta de técnicas de recomendación basadas en texto y ontología para producir recomendaciones de patrones de diseño que proporcionan soluciones de diseño apropiadas. La cuarta contribución es un sistema generador de interfaz llamado ICGDEP, que se propone para generar automáticamente el código fuente de la interfaz de usuario para aplicaciones web y móviles. El ICGDEP es el segundo sistema dentro del marco global de AUIDP y se basa en el uso de patrones de diseño de HCI que son recomendados por el sistema IDEPAR. Su objetivo principal es generar automáticamente el código fuente de la interfaz de usuario a partir de las soluciones de diseño proporcionadas por los patrones de diseño. In the current thesis, the main artifact is the novel approach to design and generate user interfaces using expert knowledge. In order to enable the use of expert knowledge, the present approach is devoted to reuse design patterns that incorporate expert knowledge of interface design and provide reusable solutions to various design problems. The main goal of the proposed approach is to address the use of design patterns in order to ensure that expert knowledge is integrated into the design and generation of user interfaces for mobile and Web applications. The specific contributions of this thesis are summarized below: This first contribution is the AUIDP framework that is defined to support the design and generation of adaptive interfaces for Web and mobile applications using HCI design patterns. The proposed framework spans over design-time and run-time. At design-time, models of design patterns along with user interface and user profile are defined following a specific development methodology. At run-time, the created models are used to allow the selection of HCI design patterns and to enable the generation of user interfaces from the design solutions provided by the relevant design patterns. The second contribution is a specification method to establish an ontology model that turns traditional text-based representation into formal HCI design pattern representation. This method adopts the Neon methodology to achieve the transition from informal to formal representations. The created ontology model is named MIDEP, which is a modular ontology that captures knowledge about design patterns as well as the user interface and user's profile. The third contribution is the IDEPAR, which is the first system within the global AUIDP framework. This system aims to automatically recommend the most relevant design patterns for a given design problem. It is based on a hybrid approach that relies on a mixed combination of text-based and ontology-based recommendation techniques to produce design pattern recommendations that provide appropriate design solutions. The fourth contribution is an interface generator system called ICGDEP, which is proposed to automatically generate the user interface source code for Web and mobile applications. The proposed ICGDEP is the second system within the global AUIDP framework and relies on the use of HCI design patterns that are recommended by the IDEPAR system. It mainly aims at automatically generating the user interface source code from the design solutions provided by design patterns. To achieve this, the ICGDEP system is based on a generation method that allows the generation of user interface source code for the target application. The contributions provided in the present thesis have been validated through different perspectives. First, the evaluation of the developed MIDEP ontology is performed using competency questions, technology-based, and application-based evaluation approaches. Second, the evaluation of the IDEPAR system is established through an expert-based gold standard and a user-centric evaluation study. Then, the ICGDEP system is evaluated in terms of being effectively used by developers, considering the productivity factor. With the explosion of the number of compute nodes, the bottleneck of future computing systems lies in the network architecture connecting the nodes. Addressing the bottleneck requires replacing current backplane-based network topologies. We propose to revolutionize computing electronics by realizing embedded optical waveguides for onboard networking and wireless chip-to-chip links at 200-GHz carrier frequency connecting neighboring boards in a rack. The control of novel rate-adaptive optical and mm-wave transceivers needs tight interlinking with the system software for runtime resource management.

TUNABLE ANTENNAS FOR CLOSED-LOOP SYSTEMS

Tunable antennas have emerged as a promising technology to address the challenges of achieving optimal performance across a wide range of frequencies. This abstract presents a study focused on designing and implementing an ideal antenna system design within a closed-loop system. Background. Tunable antennas offer a solution for achieving efficient signal transmission and reception over a broad spectrum. Traditionally fixed-frequency antennas have limitations in terms of bandwidth and efficiency, making them unfit for applications requiring adaptability to varying frequencies. The integration of tunable components in antenna systems results in greater flexibility and improved performance. Objectives. The main objective of this research is to evaluate and determine the ideal antenna design for closed-loop antenna systems which achieves maximum frequency coverage and efficiency. This involves the design of an architecture that seamlessly integrates components. Methods. The experimental methodology involves designing an antenna system design. The selected components are interconnected in a closed loop, allowing continuous monitoring and adjustment of the antenna’s characteristics. The Micro Controlling Unit (MCU) is programmed using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE), serves as the controller for managing the antenna tuner’s settings based on real-time feedback from the directional coupler and power detector. The bi-directional logic level converter ensures proper voltage compatibility between the MCU and the antenna tuner. Results. The results of the study showed that the proposed antenna system architecture was able to achieve the desired goals. The implemented closed-loop system demonstrates significant enhancements in frequency coverage and efficiency of the selected antenna. The antenna system was also able to maintain its efficiency even when the environment changed. Conclusions. The experimental results show that in closed-loop systems the performance of an antenna is optimised. The integration of the components enables dynamic frequency tuning, by enhancing the antenna’s maximum frequency coverage and efficiency. The results underscore the potential of tunable antennas in revolutionizing wireless communication systems, showing the way for more adaptable and high-performance devices in various applications.

Recycling of Commodity Plastics into Recyclable Thermosets Using Covalent Adaptable Networks / Återvinning av vanliga termoplaster till återvinningsbara härdplaster med hjälp av kovalenta anpassningsbara nätverk

Syftet med projektet var att samla in återvunnen polyeten och omvandla den till återvinningsbara högstyrke-härdplaster genom att designa ett kovalent anpassningsbart nätverk för det. Återvunnen polyeten samlades in och ympades med maleinsyraanhydrid genom reaktiv extrudering och en friradikalmekanism, vilket sedan tvärbands med laboratoriesyntetiserad polyimid. Den resulterande tvärbundna blandningen bearbetades genom formsprutning, och tester visade att den förväntade reaktionen hade utförts framgångsrikt och de mekaniska egenskaperna förbättrades avsevärt. Materialet bearbetades också om för att testa dess återvinningsbarhet och denna process samt analysen av materialet efteråt visade också lovande resultat. / The aim of the project was to collect recycled polyethylene and transform it into recyclable high-strength thermosets by designing a covalent adaptable network. Recycled polyethylene was collected and grafted with maleic anhydride through reactive extrusion and free radical mechanism, which was then cross-linked with laboratory synthesized polyimide. The resulting cross-linked blend was processed using injection molding, and testing showed that the expected reaction had been carried out successfully and mechanical properties were significantly enhanced. The material was also reprocessed to test its recyclability and this process and analysis of material after it showed promising results as well.

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation become more intertwined, understanding their impact on user control is essential. This study investigates dynamic user control in AI-driven automated systems, particularly in work environments. While adaptive automation (AA) has been extensively studied, there's a gap in research on adaptable and hybrid automation, where users control the level of automation (LOA). We bridge this gap with a design-oriented case study structured into three phases, evaluating one adaptable and one hybrid prototype. By understanding real-world perspectives of users and providers of an AI-driven automation system, we address the question: "How can we support users with dynamic control when designing for human-centred automation?”. Our findings are synthesized into insights that suggest a preference for a hybrid approach; one that balances user and AI-system collaboration, providing adaptive and personalized support, without overwhelming adaptability. Overall, our results conclude the importance of human involvement in the automation process, underscoring the need for "human touch” in the design of humancentred automation (HCAI).
