Interbedömarreliabilitet i affektavläsning - en explorativ metodstudie

Levin, Lars January 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the reliability of a method for observing expressions of affect, “Stålforsmetoden”. Stålforsmetoden focuses primarily on facial expression of affect, and more precisely the first expression presented by a patient in a psychotherapy session (referred to as transference affect). The theoretical basis is affect theory as developed in the works of Silvan Tomkins and Paul Ekman respectively. Data has been collected through structured observation and analyzed quantitatively. Inter-rater reliability was calculated using Cohen’s Kappa and amounted to K = 0.03, which means that there was no significant agreement between raters. This result implies that the reliability of Stålforsmetoden in its present form is insufficient and that further development of the method is needed. Possible reasons for the absence of inter-rater reliability such as the adequacy of education and the operationalization of transference affect are discussed and suggestions for future research are presented.</p>

The processes of the figurability of the affect in therapeutic groups with Photolanguage© method and psychoanalytic group psychodrama method.

Mitsopoulou-Sonta, Aglaia 28 September 2012 (has links)
This study presents the process of the figurability of the affect as it is expressed in group therapy by means of the Photolanguage© and the psychoanalytical psychodrama methods. The object of this study is the articulation subject-group in order to find the elaboration issues of traumatic experiences of patients having difficulties to express their emotions and give sense on happenings of their lives. Through the diffraction of the transfer and the intersubjectivity, the group proposes different and multiple identificative facets to the subject, which allows the access in a personal subjectivity. The technical characteristics of each method facilitate the figurability of the affect and the mobilisation of the imaginary, which contribute to the binding between thing-representation and word-representation. The findings of this research show that the subject begins to have access to its interior world when he restores his reverie capacity. With the figuration of internal groups that are diffracted into the group, the subject begins to reconstruct, rebuild its psychic groupality whereas the figurability of the affect allows him to approach its archaic experiences. The Photolanguage© method reinforces the meta-phoric capacities of the patient, using images as a support to representations. On the other hand, through the psychoanalytic psychodrama and the dramatic play, the experiences from the early childhood are emerging and they can be elaborated. The diffraction of the affect, the associativity and the intersubjectivity are the directive lines of both methods. Each of them, using either the image either the play, gives the opportunity to the subject to elaborate moments of its life which have been non representable till now.

Psychological and psychophysiological effects of auditory and visual stimuli during various modes of exercise

Jones, Leighton January 2014 (has links)
This research programme had three principal objectives. First, to assess the stability of the exercise heart rate-music tempo preference relationship and its relevance to a range of psychological outcomes. Second, to explore the influence of two personal factors (motivational orientation and dominant attentional style) in a naturalistic exercise-to-music setting. Third, to examine means by which to enhance the exercise experience above and below the ventilatory threshold. In Study 1, a mixed-methods approach was employed to capture responses to differing music tempo conditions across a range of exercise intensities. Results in Study 1 did not support a cubic relationship (Karageorghis et al., 2011) but rather a quadratic one, and there was a weak association between the optimal choice of music tempo and positive psychological outcomes. Music conditions reduced the number of associative thoughts by ~10% across all exercise intensities. Study 2 employed questionnaires with a large sample of female participants (n = 417) attending exercise-to-music classes. Results indicate that motivational orientation and attentional style (Association vs. Dissociation) influence responses to an exercise-to-music class. Study 3 examined the effects of external stimuli (music and video) on psychological variables at moderate and high exercise intensities. Findings served to demonstrate that manipulations of attentional focus can have a salient influence on affect and enjoyment even during high-intensity exercise. The contributions of the research programme include providing empirical evidence that attention can be manipulated during high-intensity exercise using theoretically-guided music selections, and music in combination with video footage, which enhance the exercise experience. Further, the research programme advances understanding of how motivational orientation and attentional style influence responses to music during exercise.

How to Orient Yourself in the Wilderness

Deese, Jack W 07 May 2016 (has links)
How to Orient Yourself in the Wilderness is an exhibition presented in the style of a survival guide. The “wilderness” is a metaphor for the unknown. Within this category of the unknown are numerous literal and figurative spaces. I use the guide as an attempt to pin down why I gravitate towards the camera and what it means to me as a form of communication. Simultaneously I explore what it means to be “southern” and the manner in which it is traditionally represented in images. Also included in the wilderness tag is the “art world” and the relationship of straight photography towards and with it. The exhibition is loosely attached to the survival guide premise in order to highlight the shortcoming of photography’s ability to explain.

The Adoptive Identity: Stigma and Social Interaction

Clark-Miller, Kristi Marie January 2005 (has links)
Adoption is a social institution that is continually evolving in order to meet the needs of children and adults. The research presented in this dissertation focuses on measuring the current cultural sentiments about the practice of adoption and assessing the stigmatization of adoption and the identities of adoptive parent and adopted child. Drawing from Bruce Link and Jo Phelan's conceptualization of stigma and the assumptions of Affect Control Theory, I provide evidence that adoption and thus adoptive families continue to be stigmatized in the United States. My data indicate that adoptive parents and children are socially differentiated from parents and children who are biologically related. Adopted children, particularly children adopted out of foster care, are perceived more negatively than children who are not. The stereotypical traits predicted by Affect Control Theory for adoptive parents and adopted children indicate that these identities are more negative and notably less powerful than those for biological parents and children. In addition, the expected behavioral patterns between adoptive parents and their adopted children are more ambivalent and less supportive than those of biological children and parents. The predictions made in this work must be tested in future research.

Affect and the Structuring of Language Use in Ethnic Subcultures: A Study of Louisiana Cajuns

Guidry, Tiffiny E. January 2008 (has links)
I combine approaches drawn from sociology, social psychology, and linguistic anthropology to create a unique, novel framework for the study of language, culture, and affect. The social psychological concept of affective meaning in language is measured in a single, bilingual culture and applied to the study of bilingualism, language shift, and the transmission of culture through language. The data are collected from three generations of people identifying as Cajun in South Louisiana and a small comparative sample of elderly, non-Cajuns in the Southwest. Quantitative, affective data - collected from all study participants - are bolstered by qualitative video- and audio-based data collected using anthropology-based field techniques from Cajun French/English bilingual participants, oral family histories collected from middle-aged participants, and survey data collected from high school student participants. These data and personal accounts of lives, histories, and language conception and change provide the basis for answering the following research questions: 1) When using their different languages, do bilingual speakers hold different meanings for words that have the same translated meanings? 2) Can language shift be tracked affectively? 3) Does loss of language mean loss of culture? The answer to each of these questions is yes. It is my hope that the methods developed in this study will provide the basis for future language recording and analysis and cultural preservation projects.

Diurnal Rhythms in Co-Sleeping Couples: Does Being "In Sync" Matter?

Hasler, Brant P. January 2009 (has links)
Subjective feeling, or mood, is not just a product of situational and dispositional factors, but is also based in part on underlying circadian rhythms. Notably, accumulating evidence suggests that circadian patterning is limited to positive affect, possibly as an adaptive manifestation of an appetitive motivational system. Furthermore, dispositional factors may influence the observed patterning, such as blunting the rhythm in positive affect when depression is present. The present study sought to examine further these phenomenon at an individual-level, as well as to explore circadian and affective interactions at a couple-level for perhaps the first time by monitoring mood, interpersonal interactions, sleep, activity, and light in 31 bed-sharing cohabitating couples over the course of 7 days. Participants' depression, well-being, relationship satisfaction, and morningness-eveningness were also assessed. Systematic daily patterning was found in all three measures of affect, and was moderated by depression, well-being, and morningness-eveningness. Within-couple affective synchrony (covariation) was positively associated with relationship satisfaction, within-couple morningness-eveningness similarity, and synchrony of sleep timing. Finally, day-to-day within-couple sleep timing synchrony predicted the tenor of the following day's partner interactions and affect. These data provide further evidence of potentially important interactions between sleep, circadian, affective processes both within- and between-individuals.

Andersson-Westny, Jill, Bergvall, Hanna January 2014 (has links)
