Die konstruksie van die vroulike subjek in die oeuvres van enkele Afrikaanse vrouedigters sedert 1970Retief, Petronella (Ronel) 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DLitt (Afrikaans and Dutch))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The construction of the female subject in the poetry of Afrikaans women poets since 1970 is examined with reference to the oeuvres of Sheila Cussons, Ina Rousseau, Wilma Stockenström and Antjie Krog. The work of three French feminists, namely Julia Kristeva, Hélène Cixous and Luce Irigaray, is selected as the theoretical framework, because of, amongst other reasons, their attention to the structuring role which language plays in the construction of subjectivity. In terms of defining the scope more precisely, there is a specific focus on the role of the mother-daughter relationship, as reflected in the work of these three women. This focus examines not only biological mother-daughter relationships, but also the stance which women adopt regarding the “place of the mother”, as well as the way in which the relationship with the mother’s body emerges in the writing of women. The question is posed whether there is indeed a clearly identifiable feminine subject in the oevres of the four Afrikaans women discussed and, if so, whether this feminine subject is potentially capable of destabilising or even subverting the prevailing patriarchal order.

Die diskoers van Antjie Krog se Lady Anne (1989)Crous, Matthys Lourens 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (DLitt)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002 / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die ondersoek in hierdie studie sentreer random die diskoers in Antjie Krog se sewende
digbundel, Lady Anne (1989).
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation centers on the discourse in Antjie Krog's seventh volume of poetry,
Lady Anne (1989). The central thesis of the dissertation is to analyse the way in which the
discourse of the text under discussion is being ordered and produced. The theoretical
approach is based on Foucault's discourse analysis. Foucault (1981) defines discourse as,
among others, the social usage of language within specific contexts and as part of specific
institutions. According to Foucault, discourse has an internal order or formation which
one can reveal by way of an archaeological approach; it also has a regulatory function
which not only delineates meaning, but produces meaning in the more positive sense of
the word (Foucault, 1981). If one analyses this regulatory function by way of a
genealogical approach, it appears as if discourse exercises power over mechanisms such
as knowledge, truth and self (Foucault, 1980). Discourse articulates knowledge that the
self claims as a particular truth. This calls to mind issues such as the problem of freedom
and political resistance.
This dissertation focuses on the following issues pertaining to the discourse in Lady
Anne: the discursive patterns in the text, the limitations placed on the production of
discourse (Foucault, 1981), the author function as used by Foucault (1979), the
fictionalization of the history of Lady Anne Barnard by means of a genealogical approach
(Foucault, 1970; 1972). Another pertinent issue that will be analysed is the
aestheticisation of the political discourse in South Africa, as well as the manner in which
a voice is given to the so-called Other.
The central issue of this investigation is the following: What is the position of white
creative women in South Africa and how is this position being inscribed into the
discourse of Afrikaans literature? Concomitantly, issues such as subjectivity, the
description of the object, as well as the subject's position within the literary tradition will
be analysed.

Postmodernisme en poesie, met spesifieke verwysing na die historiografiese metagedig 'Die heengaanrefrein' van Wilma StockenstromFoster, Ronel, De Goede, Petronella Hermina, Foster, Petronella Hermina 12 1900 (has links)
Dissertation (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2000. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The main aim of this study is to investigate the possibility of using a postmodern reading strategy
for Afrikaans poetry, in particular that type of poetry which, following Linda Hutcheon, I will call
historiographic metapoetry. The investigation consists of four phases. Firstly, in order to
implement Hutcheon's model, cognisance will be taken of the theory of postmodernism (chapters 1-
3), particularly with regard to poetry, since the latter is apparently a marginalised genre in this
theorisation. The second phase of the investigation encompasses a discussion of the discourse on postmodernism and poetry in America, the NetherlandsIFlanders and in Afrikaans (chapters 4-6,
respectively). Attention is given to matters such as the developmental history of postmodernism,
theorising on postmodern poetry and the practice of anthologising. The third phase bridges the gap
between research on postmodernism and that on historiographic metapoetry (chapter 7). The focus
will be on Pirow Bekker's poem "Apollo Smintheus", with specific attention being given to the
representation of the event (the journey of Jonas de la Guerre into the hinterland in 1664) in the
journal texts and other historiographic sources. Hutcheon's distinction between event and fact will
also be adopted in the analysis.
The last phase of this study is an application of Hutcheon's model to Wilma Stockenstrëm's poem,
Die heengaanrefrein, a self-reflexive text on the arrival of the Huguenots in South Africa in 1688
(chapters 8-12). As an introduction to the discussion of the text, the problematising of various
types of borders in the poem is examined. This is followed by an analysis of extracts from Die
heengaanrefrein with reference to four matters that are, according to Hutcheon, central to postmodern
theory and practice. These are: intertextuality, parody and the discourses of history; the
problem of reference; the subject and the representation of subjectivity; and lastly ideological
implications and political double-coding. The discussion of Die heengaanrefrein is supplemented
with shorter discussions of other texts, for example, George H. Weideman's "Kieselguhr-kleim",
two short poems from Breyten Breytenbach's Soos die so and P.J. Philander's poems "Die klippe
praat" and "Genesis". In Chapter 13, the final chapter, the findings are summarised and Hutcheon's
model is evaluated.
Hierdie sake is: intertekstualiteit,

Thesis (MA (General Linguistics))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This study focuses on the internal structure of the CP in Afrikaans. Rizzi’s (1997) Split-CP Hypothesis serves as the starting-point; however, careful consideration is also given to the more recent proposals of Beninca’ and Poletto (2004). The aim of the study is to determine whether the proposals of Rizzi (1997) and Beninca’ and Poletto (2004) provide an adequate framework for the description of the CP-domain in Afrikaans. The study is presented within the theoretical framework of Minimalist Syntax. Specific adaptations to the Split-CP Hypothesis are suggested throughout the course of the discussion in an attempt to make the Split-CP Hypothesis compatible with the facts of Afrikaans. Finally, attention is also given to three problematic issues in Afrikaans that require further investigation.

Aspekte van die Afrikaanse poësie van die tagtigerjareBasson, Coenraad Hendrik 05 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Die Afrikaanse poesie van die tagtigerjare toon 'n ryke verskeidenheid
deurdat ouer digters soos Eybers, Breytenbach, Cussons,
Stockenstrom en Ernst van Heerden voortdig en 'n groot aantal
nuwelinge na vore tree. Hoewel die groep digters die grense van
"generasie" ver oorskry, blyk dit dat hulle 'n baie
li tererbewuste groep kunstenaars is wie se poesie verskeie
gemeenskaplike trekke openbaar. Uit die groot verskeidenheid
blyk dat sekere temas, soos pyn, aftakeling, dood, liefde, godsdiens
asook sosio-kulturele en politieke aktualiteite steeds as
die gewildste onderwerpe figureer. 'n Deel van die studie word
daaraan gewy om aan te toon hoe hierdie temas in die jonger
Afrikaanse poesie vergestalting vind.
by verskeie digters aangetoon.
is / The rich diversity of Afrikaans poetry of the eighties is displayed
by the fact that many of the older poets, such as Eybers,
Breytenbach, Cussons, Stockenstrom and Ernst van Heerden, have
continued writing poetry, while a large number of newcomers have
appeared on the scene. Although these poets far exceed the
"generation" boundaries, they are evidently a very literary-aware
group of artists, whose work has a number of traits in common.
Certain themes, such as pain, decadence, death, love and
religion, as well as socio-cultural and political realities,
remain popular topics. Part of this study is to show how these
themes are expressed in contemporary Afrikaans poetry.
A decidedly new aspect of Afrikaans poetry is homo-eroticism.
The more open approach to homosexuality gives rise to explicit
homo-erotic poems, especially those of Joan Hambidge and Johann
de Lange. As a result of terrorist activities and military
action on our borders during the seventies and eighties,
Afrikaans literature saw the beginning of the so-called border
literature as a renewal of the war and violence theme, a relic
from the previous decade. Inter(-)textuality is explored, which,
due to its influence on creative and reviewing literature, has
brought about a change in the perspective of Afrikaans poetry.
A further renewal highlighted, is the moving away from the
unstructured and freer verse form of the sixties and early
4
seventies to a stricter, controlled and disciplined form. The
more traditional type of poetry written by various poets is
discussed. The contribution by periodicals and poems in
periodicals to Afrikaans poetry is explored. Together with the
numerous volumes of popular poetry published, emphasizing the
national quatrain, sonnets and limericks, periodicals play an
important role in making Afrikaans poetry more accessible to a
broader reading public. The conclusion is reached that the poets
of the eighties promoted the "democratization" of Afrikaans
literature, thereby extending its influence / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / D. Litt. et Phil. (Afrikaans)

Afrikaans as kommunikasietaal in sy elementêre vorm by derdetaalsprekers by Hoërskool WestonVraagom, Elvin 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Modern Foreign Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Over the past three years, Weston High School has received an increasing number of
Xhosa-speaking learners. They come from remote rural towns in the Eastern Cape. At
present, there are approximately forty Xhosa-speaking learners at the school. Many of
these learners understand very little English or Afrikaans while others speak “broken”
Afrikaans and / or English. They have a lack op prior knowledge and their exposure to
Afrikaans was limited.
As part of this project, a computer programme was designed to support the Afrikaans
language needs of these learners. The programme endeavours to develop the limited
vocabulary and language abilities of these learners in elementary Afrikaans. The
emphasis is on Afrikaans as a medium of communication. The programme has been
developed according to the language needs of these learners.
The design and composition of the project is based on general theoretical principals of
computer-assisted language learning (CALL). The project is discussed and analysed
within the CALL environment.

ʼn Taalkundige en leksikografiese perspektief op troeteltaal in Afrikaans / A linguistic and lexicographic perspective on endearment terms of language in AfrikaansSimpson, Gerda E. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The focus in this paper is on terms of endearment, and initially linking it with love, affection and
care, which prominently feature in the oldest ancient languages. Users of dictionaries are
motivated by finding and understanding the unbelievable variety of words in languages. In many
faiths/religions people give credence to a perception that love and understanding of one another's
needs and aspirations form the true basis of successful interpersonal relationships but as yet no
consensus has been reached. The data was empirically collected through personal conversations
with local people, including children, the young generation, parents and grandparents, staff of
banks, supermarkets and bookshops. A distinction is made between terms generally used for kids,
adults, men and women according to context in usage and the meanings thereof as reported by
respondents, varying from seriously meant (dearest), to affectionate (darling, beloved) to mere
superficial friendship (pal, love). As the focus was on Afrikaans which is the home language of the
most residents in the Western Cape, according to information received from Statistics South Africa,
and the knowledge as well as present usage of the word 'troetel' as a term of endearment, the
English equivalents and additional similar terms are not of importance here. The impression is,
however, that a special nuance of emotion is attached to the usage of the mentioned examples.
Dictionaries should include terms of endearment known in the colloquial language at the time of
their compilation and must be reliable sources of information regarding vocabulary, ways to
address people and the varying degrees of communication in the wide distinguishable variety of
contexts. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Woordeboekverklarings vir die woord troetel sluit onder meer in met liefde behandel, liefkoos,
streel en versorg. Hierdie besonder positiewe konnotasie het gelei na ʼn soekroete in die oudste
antieke tale as vertrekpunt om die ontstaan, bekendheid en gebruik van hierdie woordjie in
Afrikaans te probeer vasstel. Omdat liefde in verskeie gelowe as basis vir suksesvolle
boekwinkelpersoneel se menings is ingewin.
herlewe, veral by ouers en jongmense. ʼn Doel van woordeboeke vir die algemene taalgebruiker is
in hoofsaak om ʼn data-aanbod daar te stel wat verteenwoordigend is van die gewone omgangstaal
in die tydsgewrig van samestelling, maar om verder ook as interessante inligtingsbronne van data
in gebruikstaal te dien.

'n Ondersoek na Scheherazade as moontlike voorganger in 'n vroulike verteltradisie in enkele Afrikaanse literêre teksteCompion, Marlette 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / The aim of this study is to investigate the position that has been allocated to women authors by literary theorists. Some literary theorists are of the opinion that the action of writing can be compared to fatherhood, ownership and being a creator, all of which are male dominated images.
Women writers have historically been marginalized by literary theorists, since there is a perception that women cannot write because they are not male. Harold Bloom has postulated that a male writer looks to a precursor in order to write and find his own voice. Before the writer can claim his own, original voice, he must enter into an Oedipal battle with the precusor, and, figuratively speaking, ‘kill’ him in his writing. According to Gilbert & Gubar, who serve here as representatives of the feminist literary theorists, women writers make use of monsterlike figures which serve as metaphors for the inner battle they have to endure to put pen to paper. The problem, however, is that women writers have no (female) precursors to look to. Elaine Showalter postulates 4 models that women writers may use in search of a female precursor or female body of writing, but she does not offer a clear solution.
I am of the opinion that women writers can identity with a female figure or role model. The figure that I propose is Scheherazade, a storytelling character from the Thousand and One Nights, who told stories for a thousand and one nights in order for escape death. I identify a few texts from international literature that make use of this figure, whether as a character in the text, a metaphor for the female character who tells stories or as a metaphor for the author herself.
This study focuses on texts from 3 genres in Afrikaans literature, namely children’s stories, short stories and a novel. It appears from the analysis of the texts that women writers have successfully made use of the Scheherazade character, to address issues concerning the social role and position allocated to women by a patriarchial society. Along with this women writers’ search and longing for a voice of their own and their own identity gets highlighted with the use of a Scheherazade-like female character who tells stories. Lastly it became clear that this figure is also being used by women writers to contemplate the dynamics of writing and to contextualise the role that self-doubt and self-actualisation play in telling and writing stories. Scheherazade thus becomes a vehicle for finding a voice as well as agency.

'n Afrikaanse vertaling uit Cornelia Funke se TintenherzFouche, Marietjie 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Afrikaans and Dutch))—University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / At present there is an extreme shortage in the publication of Afrikaans children’s books. Although revised publications of popular, classic series, such as the Maasdorp-, Trompie- and Saartjie-series can help fill the void in the market, the contribution made by translations of children’s books should not be underestimated: Afrikaans translations of popular children’s books, such as the Harry Potter- and Narnia-series are well-liked and can even encourage young readers to develop an Afrikaans reading culture.
Young readers throughout the world get pleasure from the books written by the renowned German author Cornelia Funke. Funke is viewed as an influential author of children’s books and this is largely due to her popular fantasy-adventure Tintenherz; the extremely original plot of this fantasy-adventure, which forms part of a trilogy, persuades young readers to change their unenthusiastic approach towards reading by showing them that reading can be a pleasant, thrilling experience. This study attempts to prove that an Afrikaans translation of Tintenherz can make an important contribution to fill the void in the Afrikaans children’s literature, as well as encourage young readers to read more.
Critics fear that translations of popular children’s books might flood the market with books that might be cheaper, but that are second-rate versions of the original texts since the translations fail to achieve the same literary standards as the original texts. This study attempts to prove that knowledge of theoretical translation strategies, such as George Steiner’s hermeneutic motion, Lawrence Venuti’s approaches of foreignisation and domestication, as well as André Levere’s approach of rewrite as a form of translation do in fact make it possible to produce an Afrikaans translation of Tintenherz which not only meets the requirements of the target-culture and satisfies the wants of the target-readers, but also upholds the literary standard of the original German text.
