Pictures in the teaching of Afrikaans as a second language in Indian secondary schoolsAbdool, Abdool Raoof 04 June 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. (Media Science) / The position of Afrikaans as a national language In South Africa has been a contested one since the 17th century settlement and occupation of the Cape by the Dutch and British settlers, and it Is not surprising that today, when the country faces critical questions relating to nationhood, cultural identity and language use In a profound way, its position again emerges as a crucial point of debate (Alexander, 1989:15). The Afrikaner group and the majority of their white South African adherents place great value on the historicity of the language. This is testified through the 'taalstryd" waged dUring an after the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902) and the present-day status of the Afrikaans language as a major item on the negotiations agenda. This historicity and centrality of Afrikaans is contested by other language and cultural groups, who claim that Afrikaans is loaded with exclusivity and racism and that it therefore does not qualify in its claim for national status. The events of 1976 in Black schools and the subsequent years of considerable debate in public and academic forums, quite clearly Illustrates the Intensity of the contest surrounding the position of Afrikaans (Alexander, 1989:26). The Indian population group has always stressed its cultural heritage and at times this has occurred at the expense of Afrikaans as a language. Priority Is assigned to vernacular languages and Afrikaans is neglected in the process. The result is that the language is hardly spoken except in the Afrikaans classroom. It is against this background that this research project will examine the use of pictures In the teaching of Afrikaans at Indian secondary schools.

Die bepaling van die kommunikatiewe behoeftes in Afrikaans vir swart sekondêre skole met die oog op die opstel van 'n sillabusSema, Elizabeth Motshabi 18 February 2014 (has links)
M.A. / In most instances, Afrikaans second language courses offered to black pupils are planned without pausing to reflect on the communicative needs of the black community. In certain instances this factor has been taken into account. However, these needs were determined intuitively rather than through research and sound experience. The primary aim of this study is to examine problems affecting the determination of the comminicative needs of black pupils in Afrikaans, as well as to find criteria for the selection of suitable material for learning Afrikaans in order to satisfy the specified needs. It is hoped that this study will serve to illustrate the need for careful research aimed at establishing a systematic and scientific needs analysis for Afrikaans at black schools in the Republic of S.A. The problems and constraints pertaining to the application of an investigation into the requirements of the target group are also outlined in this study. Recommendations suggesting possible solutions of these problems are made. In addition, the present syllabus is examined in the light of present insights into the communicative needs of black learners. Chapter one deals with the aims and structure of the study. The second chapter sketches the most important points concerning the acquisition and learning of a second language. In the following chapter the theories and approaches to language teaching are discussed.

Meerduidigheid in AfrikaansSchwerdtfeger, Anna-Mart January 1968 (has links)
Summaries in Afrikaans and English / In hierdie studie word meerduidigheid as n subkategorie van meervoudigheid
skrip-semantiek, in terme waarvan hy linguistiese humor probeer verklaar binne n taalhandelingsraamwerk.
Die studie dui daarop dat daar op algemeen-teoretiese vlak 'n behoefte
bestaan aan omvattende taalgebruiksteorie waarbinne die moedertaaI spreker se jntuitiewe inlerpretasie en vereenduidiging van meerduidige
uitinge op adekwate wyse verantwoord kan word. / In this study cimbiguity is analysed as a sub-category of multiple
meaning. Within the main div ision between lexical and non-lexical
ambiguity, a distinct ion is made between various types and sub-types
of ambiguity which all share one characteristic: that of consisting
of a single form representing more than one possible, clearly distinguishable
interpretation.
Firstly, an attempt is made on a general theoretical level to show
which aspects of ambiguity an adequate theory must account for. The
essential aspects of the phenomenon are dealt with by means of a
critical review of the pragmatic, syntactic, semantic, psycholinguistic
and traditional approaches. Secondly, an attempt is made on a
language-specific level to give an adequate account of ambiguity in
Afrikaans by investigating the nature and scope of ambiguity on
different levels.
Various theoretical approaches to the lexicon are considered, focusing
inter alia on lexicographical problems, with particular reference
to the distinction between homonymy and polysemy. Different categories
of lexical and non-lexical ambiguity are considered in an
attempt to isolate those factors causing ambiguity, and to ascertain
the scope of the various ambiguities as well as the constraints and
disambiguation mechanisms and strategies applicable in each case.
In the course of this investigation attention is drawn to the interaction
between phonological, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic parameters
pertaining to the interpretation of utterances.
In my investigation of intentional ambiguity in verbal humour, a
number of Afr ikaans jokes and riddles are analysed according to
certain conditions for and mechan isms of humour. This analysis
draws on Raskin's (1985) theory of script-semantics and his distinction
between the bona fide-mode and the non-bona fide-mode of communication.
On a general theoretical level this thesis indicates a need for a
comprehensive theory of language use which can adeq uately account
for the mother-tongue speaker's intuitive interpretation and disambiguation
of ambiguous utterances. / Afrikaans and Theory of Literature / D. Litt. et Phil.

Afrikaans in democratic South Africa :a survey of scholary contributions and tendentious reporting regarding the status of Afrikaans and the other official languages of South AfricaKhalawan, Pramesh January 2002 (has links)
A dissertation submitted in fulfilnent of the Requirements for the degree of
D. Litt in Communication Science
University of Zululand, 2002 / In this study I looked at the issue of the Afrikaans language, which is most often approached from a position of strong vested interest, either in support or against it. This study was intended as an intellectual response to an intensely debated issue. It is a survey of scholarly and tendentious reporting regarding the status of Afrikaans and the other official languages of South Africa.
As we move into the 21st century the .Afrikaans language has once more moved into a position of status, not for ideological purposes but for practical communication. Previously it was associated with the struggle for survival, and with an image of kitchen patios. As it takes its rightful place in our multilingual country, one in which the playing fields are levelled for all indigenous languages, major processes in society will determine its future and to what extent Afrikaans would function as an African language. For this to happen the language has to create a survival niche for itself, on behalf of the other nine indigenous languages. As one of the official languages it needs to create a space beyond hegemony and social legislation. By ensuring that it is always 'ahead and to the side' (rather than "on the side') of English and the other nine languages, the Afrikaans language will experience a growth phase continuing to interrogate its own traditions
where people are empowered to use the language of their choice. The Afrikaans language must not be continually punished for its perceived complicity in apartheid politics but should be protected and advanced with an overarching structure of multilingualism.
The downgrading of Afrikaans has not affected the language adversely; on the contrary it has triggered stronger support from influential persons and the rest of the population. It has found a new identity and status alongside the other ten official languages. Each of these languages should be encouraged to flourish with political will and patience. Afrikaans has a significant role to play in the 'African Renaissance' and remain an important language of all South Africans.
Its role as a South African language can be redefined in terms of the constitution. In the words of President Thabo Mbeki, "when the sun rises, it must show a rebirth of South Africa, driven by the enormous talents of all our people, and made possible by the knowledge and realisation that we share a common destiny. / National Research Foundation (NRF)

Neurale netwerke as moontlike woordafkappingstegniek vir AfrikaansFick, Machteld 09 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Summaries in Afrikaans and English / In Afrikaans, soos in NederJands en Duits, word saamgestelde woorde aanmekaar geskryf. Nuwe
In Afrikaans, like in Dutch and German, compound words are written as one word. New words are
therefore created by simply joining words. Word hyphenation during typesetting by computer is a
problem, because the source of reference changes all the time. Several algorithms and techniques
for hyphenation exist, but results are not satisfactory. Afrikaans words with correct syllabification
were extracted from the electronic version of the Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaans Taal (HAT).
A neural network (feedforward backpropagation) was trained with about 5 000 of these words. The
neural network was refined by heuristically finding a suitable training algorithm and transfer function
for the problem as well as determining the optimal number of layers and number of neurons in each
layer. The neural network was tested with 5 000 words not the training data. It classified 97,56% of
possible points in these words correctly as either valid or invalid hyphenation points. Furthermore,
510 words from articles in a magazine were tested with the neural network and 98,75% of possible
positions were classified correctly. / Computing / M.Sc. (Operasionele Navorsing)

A critical evaluation of bilingual Chinese/English dictionaries for elementary and intermediate Mandarin learners at Stellenbosch UniversityWang, Mei 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The number of Chinese-learners in South Africa has increased rapidly in recent
years, but the quality of the dictionaries that are available for their use has not
improved much. The more students study Chinese, the more it becomes necessary to
create suitable dictionaries to facilitate their studies. In the hope of meeting this need,
this study selects two written dictionaries commonly used by students at Stellenbosch
University in South Africa, namely the Oxford Beginner's Chinese Dictionary and the
Concise English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary, to analyze, comment on and
compare in terms of structure and equivalence. Using the results of this analysis, this
study offers suggestions for improving the quality of future Mandarin learner’s
dictionaries.
This study takes into consideration the situation faced by students when learning
Chinese abroad, especially in South Africa, the development of pedagogical
lexicography in Chinese-learner’s dictionaries in China and abroad, the relationship
between online dictionaries and written dictionaries, and some special characteristics
of the Chinese language, all of which factors greatly influence the making of a
dictionary.
Theoretically and methodically, this study is based on Function Theory as
presented by Sven Tarp. According to Function Theory, before writing a dictionary,
lexicographers must analyze specific types of users in specific types of situations.
This study attempts to follow Tarp’s suggestion by analyzing a small group of
dictionary users with the help of a survey conducted by the author in an attempt to get
a general idea of how Mandarin learners at Stellenbosch University use dictionaries. The main focus of this study is the frame structure, microstructure,
macrostructure and dictionary equivalence in two dictionaries--Concise and
Beginner’s. After carefully analyzing these aspects of the dictionaries, the author
identifies the sections of these dictionaries which successfully present information in
a way that will be most beneficial for their intended audiences. The study goes on to pinpoint less-successful sections of the two dictionaries and provides suggestions for
improvement. In sum, this study focuses on using the principle of Function Theory to
determine what features should be included in Mandarin learner’s dictionaries to make
them more suitable for elementary and intermediate learners of Mandarin at
Stellenbosch University, in South Africa, and, by extension, in other parts of the world.
'n woordeboek spesifieke tipes gebruikers in spesifieke situasies analiseer. Hierdie

A skopos-based analysis of Breytenbach’s Titus AndronicusGreen, Benjamin Stephen 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Breyten Breytenbach's Afrikaans translation of William Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus is
a little known member of the corpus of Afrikaans Shakespeare plays. Published without
annotations in South Africa in 1970 and performed in Cape Town in the same year, it has
never been performed again and the text has attracted no academic review or led to any
subsequent editions. However, situated in 1970 in the heyday of the Apartheid regime, the
play's production broke attendance records in Cape Town and was accompanied by
substantial public controversy.
In this thesis, the author analyses Breytenbach's translation in order to determine whether
the translator had an ideological agenda in performing the translation. The analysis is
based on a preliminary discussion of culture and ideology in translation, and then uses the
Skopostheorie methodology of Hans J. Vermeer (as developed by Christiane Nord) to
assess the translation situation and the target text. The target text has been analysed on
both a socio-political and microstructural level.
The summary outcome of the analysis is that the translator may possibly have tried to
promote an anti-Apartheid ideology by translating the play. The outcome is based on
several contextual factors such as the socio-political situation in South Africa in which the
translated play was published and performed, the translator's stated opposition to the
Apartheid system, the choice of Titus Andronicus for translation and production, and to a
lesser extent the level of public controversy that accompanied the target text's production
in the theatre. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Breyten Breytenbach se Afrikaanse vertaling van William Shakespeare se Titus
Andronicus is 'n min bekende eksemplaar van die versameling Shakespeare toneelstukke
in Afrikaans. Dit is sonder enige annotasies in 1970 in Suid-Afrika uitgegee, en is dieselfde
jaar in Kaapstad opgevoer.
ontleed. Die doelteks is op sowel sosiaalpolitiese as mikrostrukturele vlak ontleed.
Die samevattende uitkoms van die ontleding is dat die vertaler moontlik 'n anti-Apartheid
ideologie probeer bevorder het deur hierdie toneelstuk te vertaal. Hierdie uitkoms is
gegrond op verskeie samehangende faktore, soos die sosiaalpolitiese omstandighede in
Suid-Afrika waarin die toneelstuk uitgegee en opgevoer is, die vertaler se vermelde
teenkanting teen die Apartheidstelsel, die keuse van Titus Andronicus vir vertaling en
opvoering, en tot 'n mindere mate die vlak van openbare omstredenheid wat gepaard
gegaan het met die doelteks se opvoering in die teater.

Metalexicographic criteria for a monolingual descriptive dictionary presenting the standard variety of YipunuTomba Moussavou, Fatima 12 1900 (has links)
Dissertation (DLitt)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The dictionaries available in the Gabonese languages are all translation dictionaries biased towards
French and compiled by missionaries and colonial administrators. No proper monolingual dictionaries
exist in the Gabonese languages. There is therefore a need for monolingual dictionaries in the
Gabonese languages, particularly in Yipunu, one of the Bantu languages (B 43) spoken in the South of
Gabon. Yipunu is a regional vehicular language or a major or majority language. Yipunu is a
domestic language i.e spoken inside Bapunu communities or a mother tongue or first language and
Yipunu is also taught as subject in the national educational system.
As a response to this need, this dissertation proposes metalexicographic criteria for the compilation of a
standard descriptive monolingual dictionary with special reference to Yipunu. The proposed model
focuses primarily on the inclusion and the treatment of the standard variety of Yipunu and to a lesser
degree on the other varieties. Such a model is directed at a dictionary primarily dealing with the needs
of the average, educated members of the Yipunu speech community, the mother-tongue speakers, and
also designed for experienced and advanced learners of Yipunu and their teachers.
This study aims to point out how important standard descriptive monolingual dictionaries are in general
and specifically in the case of African Bantu languages. This study also aims to highlight the
importance for Gabonese lexicographers to adopt modern lexicographical principles in dictionary
compilation such as the user-driven dictionary and the corpus-based dictionary. This model, although
devised for Yipunu, will eventually serve as model for the design of standard descriptive dictionaries in
all Gabonese languages. This study provides information about the content and the structures of such a
dictionary and is structured as follows: Chapter 1 focuses on introducing and contextualising the research. It presents the linguistic situation
in Gabon with reference to the status of Yipunu. It also shows the importance and the relevance of the
research and gives the theoretical basis, methodology, hypotheses and objectives underlying the study.
Chapter 2 criticises the lexicographic works in Yipunu in order to improve the quality of future
Yipunu dictionaries and examines the major needs of Yipunu lexicography.
Chapter 3 envisages some aspects of the standardisation of Yipunu. It targets the discussion at the
level of the language analysis namely the phonology, the grammar, the dictionary and the orthography
of Yipunu.
Chapter 4 discusses the user perspective, which guides the dictionary compilation. It focuses on the
user profile, user typologies and dictionary functions. The intended dictionary has a multifunctional
character. Special attention is given to a pioneering survey of dictionary use among Gabonese students
and to the discussion of the teaching of dictionary use in Gabon.
Chapter 5 deals with the dictionary plan. Different aspects such as the style guide, the genuine
purpose, the dictionary basis, data collection, the data collection policy, data collection methods and the
corpus of the proposed dictionary are discussed
Chapter 6 elaborates on the macrostructure of the proposed dictionary. The dictionary gives priority to
a strict alphabetical macrostructure. Macrostructural elements, lemmatisation strategies, and types of
lemmas and articles to be included in the proposed dictionary are discussed.
Chapter 7 focuses on the microstructure of the proposed dictionary. The model suggests an obligatory
microstructure and an extended obligatory microstructure and discusses the variety of data to be
included in the articles of the proposed dictionary.
Chapter 8 deals with the outer text section and the guide structures of the proposed dictionary, which
includes front and back matter texts. Polyaccessibility, a system of cross-referencing, and lemmatic and
non-lemmatic addressings are characteristics of the proposed dictionary. Chapter 9 makes some concluding remarks by highlighting the focus point of each chapter of the
dissertation. It gives also some recommendations for the research.
word. Jipoenoe is 'n streeksvoertaal of 'n hoof- of meerderheidstaal.
woordeboekgebruik in Gaboen.
