The Police Reform Process in Kenya, 2008-2014: A Case Study of Security Sector Reform in Societies Emerging From Crisis

Ondoro, Nicholas Otieno January 2015 (has links)
Security sector reform has in the recent past been a critical component of peace agreements in countries emerging from armed conflicts or political crisis. In Kenya, the Commission of Inquiry into the 2007/08 Post-Election Violence (CIPEV) established that Kenya’s security sector, particularly the police, bore the greatest responsibility for the violence. Subsequently, the police emerged as one of the major institutions for reforms. ‘How have security sector reforms, particularly police reforms, in Kenya developed since 2007 and how, and to what extent, have they been shaped by Kenya’s wider political transitions and SSR process during this period?’ The research aimed at investigating how the police reform process in Kenya has developed since 2007, and how the process has been shaped by Kenya’s wider political transitions and security sector reform processes in general. Using mixed methods research, we found that despite some progress, there is wider public perception that the reforms are yet to address reform priorities at the national level and still fall short of expectations of ordinary Kenyans. We argue that political power-sharing after the 2007 post-election violence facilitated police reform, while at the same time frustrated its implementation especially in instances where reform seemed to dis-empower political elites. / Chevening Scholarship for study-grant during first year of study. Fotboll som maktmedel, den agendasättande kampen ochanklagelser om sportswashing : - en narrativ analys av medierapporteringen inför fotbolls-VM 2022 i Qatar

Ström, Jacob, Zetterlund, Gustav January 2023 (has links)
Both Qatar and FIFA have been heavily criticised for the bribes and corruption resulting in Qatar obtaining the FIFA World Cup 2022. Over 6500 migrant workers in Qatar are said to have lost their lives during the construction of new arenas, and the media is an essential part for this being acknowledged. This essay examines and identifies the discourses that are dominating the articles written in the awakening of FIFAs World Cup in Qatar 2022. This will be done through studying the portrayal of Qatar in Dagens Nyheter, the Guardian and Gulf Times. The articles are studied through a narrative analysis method with support from agenda setting, framing and gatekeeping theories. The results show that western media portrays Qatar as unworthy of the world cup, while Qatari media ensures that the country will create the greatest world cup in history. The results suggest that Qatar is guilty of sportswashing through their government-controlled media.

Hjältarna i kvartsfinalen mot kritiserade bronsmedaljörer : En kvalitativ textanalys om gestaltningar av herr- och damlandslaget i fotboll vid vinst och förlust under VM

Träff Jonsson, Johanna, Serop, Zain January 2024 (has links)
This study aims to analyze the media representation of Sweden's men's and women's national football teams during the 2018 men's World Cup and 2023 women's World Cup through a qualitative content analysis of articles from two newspaper tabloids which are Aftonbladet and Expressen. By integrating the framing theory, agenda-setting theory, gender theory and representation into the analysis, themes, and patterns in how the teams were portrayed in the media were identified. The results show differences in how the men's and women's teams were depicted, as well as how victory and defeat affected media representation. The discussion focuses on methodological considerations, the relevance of the results, and suggestions for future research in the field. The media representation of Sweden's men's national football team appears to be more positive even though they did not achieve any medal in their respective tournament meanwhile Sweden's women's national football team achieved a bronze medal.

The portrayal of the Mali Conflict in Swedish News Media : A Content Analysis of the Usage of National References

Marin, Anna, Curman, Josefin January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the use of national references in contemporary Swedish journalism. As a result of this, the study raises the question of the importance of national references throughout the world and provides a deeper understanding of the production of news. Through a qualitative and quantitative content analysis of 23 articles from the Swedish news organizations Dagens Nyheter (DN) and Svenska Dagbladet (SVD), the study examines the material using the agenda-setting theory, the gatekeeping theory, and the theories of news frames and news values. The qualitative approach aims to investigate how national references are used, and the quantitative research investigates to what extent national references are used and which themes are often occurring. The study's main findings show that the usage of national references is identifiable in both SVD and DN. The articles are found to utilize national references linked to Swedish soldiers, Swedish politicians, and the political allies of Sweden to provide cultural links to consumers, thus making the news more accessible and recognizable. National references are regularly implemented by using a narrative that exhibits a unified West where Sweden collaborates with other countries and international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations. Further, Swedish military involvement in the conflict in Mali is often the subject of the articles examined in the study. The situation of the Swedish soldiers is often put on the agenda, and the Swedish military is generally framed as a responsible military force, protecting democracy and being in a leading position. The involvement of the Swedish government and Swedish politicians is frequently mentioned in the articles, making the Mali issue political, which could impact the 2022 election in Sweden.
