French Ars nova motets and their manuscripts : citational play and material context

Rose-Steel, Tamsyn January 2011 (has links)
The discussion of citation and allusion has become an important area of research in Medieval Studies. The application of postmodern intertextual theories has brought scholars to a deeper understanding of the reuse of borrowed material, shedding new light on a culture of music and literature that was once dismissed as dully repetitive. This thesis builds on this work by examining in depth the manner in which citation and allusion was deployed in the fourteenth-century motet. Motets are a particularly fertile ground for discussion of the reuse of material, drawing as they do on a range of citational techniques such as borrowed liturgical tenors, modelling of rhyme schemes on existing works, and quotation of refrains and authorities. The polyphonic and polytextual nature of the motet enabled composers to juxtapose different registers, languages and genres, and thus to create an array of competing possible interpretations. This study is situated against several strands of recent scholarship. It draws on critical theory, as well as discussions of refrain definition, memory, manuscript compilation, and notions of voice, authority and authorship. Each chapter examines a particular body of work: the interpolated Roman de Fauvel, the works of Guillaume de Machaut, the motets of the Ivrea and Chantilly manuscripts, and finally those of Manuscript Torino J.II.9. In each case, looking at the use of citation and allusion connects to other concerns. In the Roman de Fauvel, citation in the motets can be seen as functioning alongside use of the vernacular, manuscript layout and illuminations to elucidate the narrative. In the works of Guillaume de Machaut citation is linked to his ambiguous self-presentation and authorial presence, and connects individual pieces in his complete works’ manuscripts. The Ivrea and Chantilly motets, while not linked by the same strength of context, demonstrate continuing use of thirteenth-century tradition. In this case, studying compilation choices may help us to understand how scribes interpreted citational material. Finally, I argue that understanding the internal use of symmetry in MS J.II.9 and its motets, and the reuse of material between the motets and the chansons of that repertory, vindicates the view that the music and poetry was composed by a single author well versed in mainstream tradition. I have been able to propose some previously unnoted allusions in the major works, and draw out the benefits of a holistic approach to understanding these motet and manuscripts. All this points to motets both continuing the writing traditions of the thirteenth century throughout the fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, but also shows individual writers and compilers choosing to cite in a creative and innovative manner.

Řeč obrazů, symbolů a aluzí v Rakúsově prozaickém souboru Pieseň o studničnej vode / Images, symbols and allusions in Stanislav Rakús: Pieseň o studničnej vode

Barvínková, Tereza January 2011 (has links)
The thesis is of an analytical/interpretative character, focusing on paradigmatic analysis of the motives, images, symbols and allusions in the works of Slovak novelist Stanislav Rakús. The object of the analysis is the short story collection Pieseň o studničnej vode, first published in 1979. The multilayeredness of Rakús's texts urges the reader to search for different interpretative possibilities. The language of images, symbols and allusions affects not only the motivic and expressive structure of the text, but also e.g. the temporal and spatial identification of the stories, and in a specific manner it also affects the narrative situation implied. The thesis focuses on detailed analysis of individual layers of the literary texts.

Harvey, Virginie January 2008 (has links) (PDF)

Transforming the Tradition: Soundplay as an Interpretive Device in Innerbiblical Allusions

Kline, Jonathan Greenlee January 2014 (has links)
The present study concerns the use in the Hebrew Bible of paronomasia (soundplay) for the purpose of alluding to and interpreting antecedent literary traditions also found in the Bible. The focus of the investigation lies on the biblical writers' use of allusive paronomasia for the purpose of constructing theological discourse, that is, in service of their efforts to describe the nature of God and his relationship to humanity. By showing that a variety of biblical texts contain examples of allusive paronomasia employed for this purpose, the study demonstrates that this literary device played an important role in the growth of the biblical text as a whole and in the development of ancient Israelite and early Jewish theological traditions. / Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations

Thinking about the complexity of the short story O alienista (Machado de Assis), we observed that such aspect results of the 'manners' of intervention that the narrator accomplishes by a 'historiographic' discourse. Through this discourse, he is able to project events and ideologies from the moment of enunciation (narration) on the elements of the statement (diegesis). Hence the difficulty that the short story introduces to the critic suggests an approach that goes beyond the traditional theoretical classifications about the narrator, once the richness of the category does not reside in the stagnated characteristics of its form, but in its manner of proceeding actively on the report. Based on this, we propose a study that is centered not properly in the narrator's figure as 'typological' result, according to the traditional theoretical classifications, but in the formal means that act, starting from the narration, on the constitution of the diegesis. In other words, we tried to study the category indirectly through the relationships between strategic discursive means, enunciation and statement. Such relationships are capable to dissimulate an entire implicit universe that hides ferocious criticismo to different domains of the reality. Therefore we need a research to be ruled by different concepts when the subject is the reflection on unconventional manners with which the narrator intervenes in his report. The immediate consequence of such a study concerning this subject is a methodological arrangement that is based on new concepts formulated by a range of theorists that belong not only to literary theory. Thereby we built and adopted, throughout the whole analysis, some specific notions, as it is the case of the allusion-that results from the dialogue between the ideas of Gérard Genette s narrative levels, the ideas of Peirce s indexicality and the Grice s implicature. This conglomeration of theoretical aspects from different áreas can suggest a certain perplexity. However, at the end, the allusion and its constituent phases -as it results from the a fore mentioned theoretical connection provides an indispensable service to our analysis. Still of our specific method another fundamental concept arises: the prototypicality. By this term we want to designate the cutting done by the narrator of certain essential lines that configure particularities of the reality.
