Mario Roberto Álvarez, obra arquitetônica e teoria do projeto

Pérez, Juan Trabucco January 2007 (has links)
In the following dissertation there is a development of an approach to Mario Roberto Álvarez' work partialized in relation to its buildings of density in height in Buenos Aires and delimited to an explanation from the projection point of view. This explanation is based on the hypothesis that the production developed by Álvarez, for its extension and transcendence, is capable of providing knowledge about the architectonic project, vital to understand the development of modern architecture, its relationship with the city and its validity as a major architecture for the present. The work dedicates its first pages to the development and statement of the project research methodology and to the introduction of the architect in question and his work within the historical and cultural context in which it is inserted. From the third chapter on, there is a selection of his most significant works for this approach, they are analyzed one by one and there is a development of a theoretical meditation of a general and a relational character, among all of them. For the analysis and meditation development, the knowledge tool used was the project system itself, looking for the setting up of knowledge arising from the permanent dialogue between project and thoughts. Finally, the work is assessed as an initial approach to a field of theoretical thought of the project connected to the reality of Latin American modern architecture and in particular, the experience developed in Argentina.

El Norte tampoco existe: First-and-Third-World as show (essays on the epistemology of the spectacle from Guy Debord, Santiago Álvarez, Gregory Nava and Arthur Tuoto, 1965-2016)

Cuenca, Daniel 10 February 2020 (has links)
The history of United States – Latin American relations has been dominated by discourses of development since the earliest stages of independent nationhood. In the twentieth century, these discourses found an epistemological anchoring in the geopolitical concepts of First World and Third World well past the Cold War Era, as well as in the related notions of Empire and Neo-Colony in more recent postcolonial studies. As cultural concepts, these binary categories exceed the economic basis to which they claim reference. The dissertation examines this projection beyond the economic foundation as a function of spectacular media and focuses on the degree to which these categories (which regulate crucial aspects of the mutual U.S. – Latin American imagination) may constitute compromised epistemological dogmas firmly governed by the very capitalist status quo that they attempt to counter. In order to develop a theorization of the textual forces at work in the formation of the cultural concepts of First and Third World, this dissertation examines the work of Cuban revolutionary filmmaker Santiago Álvarez in dialogue with an update of Guy Debord’s theories on the spectacle, the dérive, and psychogeography. Together with critical considerations of theories of space-time, modernity and postmodernity, as well as of the nation-state epistemological order, it formulates a reading of the development discourses, called here “demarcational critique.” This model is also put into conversation with a key theoretical work on the topic (John P. Leary’s A Cultural History of Underdevelopment), a fictional film (Gregory Nava’s El Norte), and an experimental montage of crucial meta-reflective value (Arthur Tuoto’s Não Me Fale Sobre Recomeços). Through an exploration that seeks to blur the line between theoretical and fictional texts, this dissertation concludes that development discourses, and their main subsidiary notions of First and Third World, generally studied as purely economic categories, possess a spectacular dimension, and that the analysis of this dimension must involve cultural studies. It further highlights the problematic nature of those notions in relation to a postcolonial project by examining their Eurocentric, moralizing, and racialized nature. Finally, this dissertation proposes and demonstrates an alternative, non-national model for postcolonial discourse.

An Analysis of Federico Alvarez del Toro's Marimba Concerto "El Espiritu de la Tierra"

Hastings, Tyree 05 1900 (has links)
In this paper, I analyze the musical content in Federico Alvarez del Toro's marimba concerto El Espiritu de la Tierra. This dissertation represents my analysis of features I hear in the composition, and does not reflect the composer's original compositional process. Commissioned by the governor of Chiapas, the piece was composed in collaboration with internationally renowned marimba virtuoso Zeferino Nandayapa and premiered in 1984 with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City at Festival Cervantino in Guanajuato. The work has not been published and has been mentioned only briefly in scholarship. Particular attention in the analysis is given to indigenous and folk idioms from the southern region of Mexico combined with post-modern compositional techniques. My primary argument within the dissertation is that I believe the piece demonstrates a respect for tradition and heritage while concurrently utilizing non-traditional and contemporary compositional techniques. Analytically, I argue that two basic shapes are used throughout the piece, and I argue that the many cultural references within the piece solidify a preoccupation with the lineage of southern Mexico.

The problems with a hybrid identity expressed in poetry

Persson, Sofia January 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyse the expression of the difficulties with a hybrid identity in two contemporary poems written by two authors from Latin America, Gloria Anzaldúa and Julia Alvarez. The analysis of the two poems take into account the perspective of a hybrid identity and the problems that this entails in a society filled with rules, standards and boundaries between different ethnic, cultural and sexual groups.  The analysis of the two poems is followed by a comparison of the results of the investigation and ultimately is presented the conclusions. The study shows that the poems share several respects, despite that they at first seems very different. An example is the similarities of the main messages that the poems convey, that we need to accept the mix of cultures, ethnics and sexualities.

Fictionist, poet, essayist and author of books for children and youths, Reynaldo Valinho Alvarez is considered by national and foreign critics one of the most important authors of the contemporary Brazilian poetry, being one of the most important of the so-called 1960 s generation. The main theme of this work is centered in the image of the city as a fundamental aspect of the structuring of an urban contemporary poetics. Thus, we will analyze the multiple urban forms, taking into consideration the dialog between literature and other forms of representation of the urban. The corpus analyzed is formed by the poems that represent the urban theme which are spread throughout his production. We see in this author, mainly, scenes of the big city (particularly of Rio de Janeiro), place of his social and existential experiences. With this work we aim to contribute to the enlargement of his critical fortune and to the critical deepening of his studies of the contemporary Brazilian lyric poetry. Therefore, we count on the group of the poetic work of the author and on a considerable critical fortune of his books, besides a significant theoretical framework about the issues approached in this literary analysis. No. of bitstreams: 1 TitoMFJ_DISSERT.pdf: 1131538 bytes, checksum: cb4178f843dfdf9a5d46d5e8caebc742 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-06-02 / This master s thesis aims at investigating the way in which diasporic subjects in the novel How the Garc?a Girls Lost their Accents (1992) cope with the clash of two cultures the Caribbean one, from the Dominican Republic, and the North-American one, from the U.S., as well as the implications of such negotiations in the lives of immigrants, once it apparently depicts the plight of those who are torn between mother-lands and mother-tongues (IYER, 1993, 46). At the same time, the implications of such negotiations in the lives of immigrants are relevant issues in the writing of Julia Alvarez. For this, there is the analysis of the uses of family memories as one of the main strategies immigrant writers possess to recall their identities. Moreover, this thesis will also consider the language issue for the construction of the immigrant identity insofar as bilingualism is a key factor in the negotiation the Garc?a girls must effect between their Caribbean and their American halves in order to understand where they stand in the contemporary world. In order to build a theoretical framework that supports this master s thesis, we list the works of Homi K. Bhabha (1990, 1996, 2003, 2005), Stuart Hall (2001, 2003), Julia Kristeva (1994), Salman Rushdie (1990, 1994), Sonia Torres (2001, 2003) among other contributions that were crucial to the completion of this academic research / A presente disserta??o objetiva investigar a maneira em que sujeitos diasp?ricos ficcionais da obra How the Garc?a Girls Lost their Accents (1992), de Julia Alvarez (1950 ), negociam o embate entre duas culturas a caribenha, oriunda da Rep?blica Dominicana, no Caribe, e a estadunidense, proveniente dos Estados Unidos da Am?rica, j? que aparentemente espelha a dor daqueles que se encontram divididos entre terras natais e l?nguas maternas (IYER, 1993, p. 46).
