This research seeks to understand the circulation and appropriations of Americanism, a political and cultural movement that was born out of internal hegemony developed by the United States of America and becomes a model of modernity for other countries. Uses the repertoire of the New Cultural History and the evidentiary model based on Italian microhistoria as theoretical and methodologicalreference. As historic source, makes use of physical education periodicals that circulated in Brazil in the first half of the twentieth century. The analysis of the chosen documents indicates to us that from 1932, with the publication of the first periodicals on physical education,it is observable the circulation and appropriation of representations of Americanism, whose cultural traits permeates sports and school form of physical education. Moreover, the evidences points to a strategy for publicizing the American way of life, a synthesis of modernity and efficiency, especially in magazinesissued by commercial publishers that make more references to the United States than those edited by autarchic publishers, using the Pan-American movement to this sometimes and there is still the circulation of productsand goods advertising, produced by American industries. Furthermore we can see that even though it cannot be characterized as a locus for the dissemination of Americanism, the Young Men s Christian Associationhas contributed to the subsequent appropriation of this cultural movement, because it has been brought to South America by Americans who brought in their activities the images of American culture as the apex of modernity

Red Scare Propaganda in the United States: A Visual and Rhetorical Analysis

Schroeder, Christy 04 January 2007 (has links)
This paper is a discussion and analysis of Red Scare propaganda from two different time periods: 1918-1921 and the 1940-50’s. Six examples of propaganda have been chosen and analyzed both visually and rhetorically. The paper also contains a discussion of the historical context and times surrounding the images, helping to place the texts within a proper framework for discussion. The six images are analyzed through Aristotle’s traditional rhetorical devices – ethos, pathos, and logos. Seven logical fallacies and drawn from this discussion of rhetoric and applied to the images as well. The images are visually analyzed in terms of stereotypes they uphold as well as the American ideology of “Americanism” that they allegedly support.

The hyper Americans! : Modern architecture in Venezuela during the 1950s

Villota Peña, Jorge 09 July 2014 (has links)
During the 1950s, Venezuela embarked in an architectural venture marked by aesthetic, programmatic, and technological explorations. Politically framed by the international tension of the Cold War, this period was distinguished by multiple commercial exchanges between Venezuela and the United States, specially based on the oil industry. Many cultural aspects of the Venezuelan life, including its urban and architectural production, changed because of this interrelationship. Yet the conventional view is that architecture in Venezuela was torn between the repetition of U.S. models and the purest creativity of its local designers. Based on periodical publications of that time, and methodologically framed by the contemporary notion of transculturation and Gianni Vattimo’s weak though, this research demonstrates that modern architecture in Venezuela, produced by both locals and Americans, went beyond a unilateral center-periphery influence, and ended up being the hyperrealization (intensified version) of U.S. ideals. In this sense, the research analyzes an aspect not studied yet in depth: the connection between the long-term geographical profile of Venezuela and a unique geopolitical situation, as the basis for an outstanding architecture. The dissertation examines how the Edificio Creole in Caracas, designed by American architect Lathrop Douglass for Standard Oil, and completed in 1955, was not the subsequent version but the advanced prototype of the Esso office buildings both in Louisiana and New Jersey. It shows as well how the Electricity Building in Caracas (1955), also designed by Douglass, and whose authorship has remained unknown until now, represented a unique opportunity both to explore the insertion of an “horizontal skyscraper” in downtown, and to reveal a complex network of professional and political relations. By examining Higuerote Beach Resort, a vacation and residential complex located near Caracas, the dissertation also demonstrates how American magazines were used by Venezuelans as the basis for an architecture that became original without the inspiration of a genius designer. Finally, this research analyzes the production of a supernatural architecture through the Helicoid Shopping Center in Caracas (designed by Arquitectura y Urbanismo C.A. in 1955), one of the most paradigmatic examples of modern Venezuelan creativity, and probably the utmost realization of the American Utopia. / text

Colonization and European thought brought to the original people not only the mark of financial dependence and capitalism. They were crucial, above all, to the expansion of a Eurocentric intellectual influence, a cultural colonialism that, together with private property, marked our economic and social formation. However, as the history of men needs to be observed in their dialectical construction, the last two decades of the twenty-first century and its political changes have brought to the fore new theoretical questions to think about contemporary Latin America, where governments and social movements formed a political alternative to Structures of power experienced since the third democratic wave in the mid-1980s, seeking to recover an approximation between society and state. In the wake of this reflection, this thesis aims to critically analyze, from a marxist perspective, the decolonial movement in Latin America. It is a theoretical-political project of Latin American intellectuals that arises simultaneously with the argument of resistance to the western-centrism and consequent critical renovation of the Social Sciences in the subcontinent. Therefore, we sought to investigate how two theories that are key to think the constitution of our objectthe decolonial movement, expand in the academy, are postcolonial theory and the study of the subaltern subject, as well as the way in which these theories Are received in the subcontinent, gaining strength from the 1990s onwards, with the launch of Coloniality and modernity-rationality (1992) by Peruvian Aníbal Quijano (1928). Having as a theoretical-methodological axis the recovery of part of the set of the historiographical political work of Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) and J. C. Mariátegui (1894-1930), considering that these authors make interpretations on the national question and uneven development from the contributions of the Marxist dialectical methodology that foment their theoretical formulations, our hypothesis indicates that concepts and theories recovered by the current of decoloniais authors and already postulated previously by the authors here highlighted - Indo-American subalternity and socialism - do not necessarily strictly bind themselves to what Gramsci and Mariátegui had intended for such concepts, presenting fundamentally different political conclusions. We Recovered, to test the hypothesis, the theoretical assumptions of decolonial authors on the subject and thus launched as secondary hypothesis the possibility of Marxist theory address issues that affect Latin America, the break with revolutionary Marxism is not necessary to achieve advances in Social and political theory in Latin America. It was possible to verify that the decolonial authors are not unanimous about this rupture, so we can compare this division to the question of Latin American essentialism, one of the faces that characterized the Marxist debate in the subcontinent in the 1930s, mainly because it deals with political fragmentation which proposes a social classification based on the question of races like the fight and not as part of the class struggle. Finally, we conclude that Gramsci and Mariátegui, Marxists with non-hegemonic visions of Marxism, approached the traditional conception of Marxist politics of subalterns, stimulating a deep association between intellectual knowledge and popular will, indicating elements that are contemporaneously presented by the decolonial left.

As a methodology, was used the film analysis of It’s a Wonderful Life (1946), to observe what kind of American way of life the cinema of classic narrative structure would be insert in its production, with the intention of spreading the american way of life without breaking the moral rules already established by the codes of censorship imposed at the time and that until now, in contemporary times, are in force. US culture, politics, and economics were discussed in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, periods selected for their relevance in the making of myths and turning points in American history; Americanism as a way of life; Fordism; and Hollywood cinema, for being the one of the pioneering mass media that collaborated with the forms of Americanization not only within the US but throughout the world.

Shaping popular culture : radio broadcasting, mass entertainment and the work of the BBC Variety Department, 1933-1967

Dibbs, Martin G. R. January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines the extent to which the BBC was able to shape the output of popular culture on radio in Britain, according to its own system of beliefs, between the years 1933 and 1967. This research will show that from the outset, the BBC was an institution with a mission to inform, educate and entertain the nation. While it was not opposed to entertainment, its focus was didactic and supported a mission to improve its audience both culturally and intellectually. This policy was not always welcomed by the audience but, with the exception of the war years, persisted into mid 1950s. The Variety Department was formed in 1933 to produce all forms of light entertainment and this research will examine how its policies shaped the production of popular culture over the period concerned. This study looks not only at the workings of the Variety Department but also the topics of Americanisation and vulgarity, the two areas in which the BBC had particular sensitivities. It analyses the BBC's strategies to counteract the American effect on popular music and spoken-word programmes and how it provided its own particularly British form of entertainment in order to produce programmes it considered suitable for British audiences. It also investigates programme censorship imposed by the BBC to mitigate vulgarity in programmes, so as to produce those it considered suitable for its audiences. This thesis will contend that for over 40 years the BBC Variety Department produced popular entertainment programmes on radio which became an integral part of people's daily lives until, within a few years radio was superseded by television as the nation's principal provider of domestic entertainment. There has been no discrete study of the BBC Variety Department and it is intended that this research will add to the existing scholarship in BBC history and contribute to the analysis of radio's place in domestic popular culture in the period examined.
