Application Whitelisting : Smartphones in High Security Environments

Today, smartphones are in widespread use by consumers, commercial companies and government authorities. Unfortunately, there are many examples of applications carrying out malicious activities, such as stealing information or subscribing to premium-rate services. In this thesis work, a novel application whitelisting process (AWP) is proposed. It defines processes for application security audits and whitelisting i.e. methods on how to classify, evaluate and test a given application to make sure that it with a level of assurance does not have malicious intentions. In a risk analysis of users in high security environments, the results showed that confidentiality and availability is the top most important security aspects to protect in this environment. The applications in the whitelisting process should therefore be tested for known malware and adware as well as permissions that can be used to send private information to remote servers. Additionally, testing should also be carried out for information leakage through intents and content resolvers. Because whitelisting is locking down the freedom and usability that comes with a smartphone, three different leveled whitelists are proposed to satisfy users and organizations with different security needs. A prototype was developed to prove the overall usability of the design. The result of scanning 200 applications from Google Play showed that 12% of all applications can be placed in the highest leveled whitelist. The results also suggest that 17.5 % of all applications on Google Play are malware or potentially unwanted applications. The results points to that using this novel whitelisting process, about 30% of all applications can be automated into whitelists and will not need manual analysis.

Saab har utvecklat en produkt, Remote Tower, vars syfte är att fjärrstyra en flygplats. Fjärrstyrning innebär övervakning och styrning av flygplatsen från en annan plats än flygledningstornet. På den flygplats som ska övervakas har kameror monterats på ett sätt så att en 360-graders vy ges och bilden från dessa skickas till den plats varifrån man styr flygplatsen. När en ominstallation av en eller flera kameror görs så behövs det i dagsläget två installatörer. Dessa kan behöva arbeta på olika orter då serverdatorn inte behöver vara placerad i närheten av flygplatsen i sig. Detta är både tidskrävande och kostsamt, vilket har medfört att ett behov av en smidigare installation av kamerorna har identifierats. En servertjänst har utvecklats vilken kan kommunicera med kamerorna och styra deras funktioner såsom zoom, fokus och iris, men även utföra beräkningar baserat på en bildjämförelse. För att använda serverns funktioner så har även en androidapplikation arbetats fram. Det är denna som installatören kommer att använda när denna är uppe i kameramasten och justerar kamerorna. Genom denna applikation fås tillgång till nuvarande vy, kamerans alla funktioner samt möjlighet att köra guider som skapats för att underlätta kalibreringen. / Saab has developed a product, Remote Tower, which is designed to remotely control an airport that is monitored and controlled from a location other than the air traffic control tower. At the airport you want to control the cameras mounted in a manner such that a 360 degree view is given and the image of those sent to the place from which to control the airport. When a re-installation of one or many cameras is needed there is today required two people. These may have to work in different places because the server does not need to be located in the vicinity of the airport itself. This is both time consuming and costly, which has led to a need for a versatile installation of the cameras. A server application has been developed which can communicate with the cameras and control their functions such as zoom, focus and iris, but also make image comparison calculations. An Android application was also developed to access the server. It is this that the installer will use when he is up in the camera tower and adjusts the cameras. This application has access to the current view, the camera's features and also the possibility to run guides created to facilitate calibration.

I detta arbete undersöks effektiviteten hos Androids medföljande metoder för att uppnå beständigt tillstånd. Undersökningen baseras på ett egenutvecklat verktyg för att mäta de olika metodernas effektivitet, med avseende på tid för att spara ner och läsa in tillståndet samt hur mycket utrymme det sparade tillståndet tar upp i sekundärminnet. Resultaten från undersökningen visar att de olika metoderna presterar olika bra beroende på tillståndets storlek samt om tillståndet mestadels består av text eller av nummer. Den metod som generellt är mest effektiv är Javas Serializable. Framtida undersökningar skulle kunna komplettera den genomförda undersökning genom att också utvärdera effektiviteten hos metoder som tillhandhålls via externa bibliotek.

Denna studie tacklar ett av de problem som modern IP-telefoni brottas med, som gör att det är svårare att konkurrera med traditionell telefoni: fördröjningar på grund av otillräckliga Session Initiation Protocol-servrar (SIP). Genom tester av de viktigaste faktorerna jämförs fyra högaktuella Open Source SIP-servrar: OpenSIPS, Kamailio, FreeSWITCH och Yate. Avsikten är att underlätta valet av SIP-server för nya applikationer inom IP-telefoni, öka prestandan samt snabba på utvecklingen. Studien behandlar de intressantaste faktorerna vid val SIP, såsom användarvänlighet, hastighet, lagring av användardata samt ljudkvalité. Slutsatsen blev att Kamailio stod som klar segrare, med överlägsna resultat i jämförelse med övriga servrar, på de parametrar som valts ut. Skillnaderna var förhållandevis små prestandamässigt – det som verkligen avgjorde var främst hur avancerade servrarna var att installera, använda samt konfigurera.

Having sufficient sleep every day is very important as not getting enough sleep can lead to difficulties remembering things, concentrating and other problems. This application provides tools to track the sleeping pattern of the user based on the inputs given. When the user picks a date, a weekly graph is generated to see how the user’s sleep cycle looks. It also displays the average hours the user slept each day and the sleep pattern type below the graph. Medicine reminder is another tool which reduces the risk of skipping medicines. As many people tend to complicate the severity level of the disease by forgetting to take the required medicine, this app can help them to prevent such problems. It reminds them to take their medicine at the entered times until the end of the course duration. People often tend to forget to drink enough water. Staying hydrated is very important for our body to function properly and flush out toxins. For this purpose, this app features a water reminder to remind the user to drink water every hour until the daily limit is reached. This is done by calculating the amount of water that should be consumed every day based on the user’s details like age, weight, physical activity and gender. Apart from these, to stay fit and healthy one should do some physical activity every day which helps to activate their body. The instructions and videos of some exercises, information on health tips, and natural remedies to some common health problems that can be cured without any medication are provided in the app. This would be a very convenient application for those who are very busy with their work life and have difficult time tracking their sleep, medicine times and staying hydrated at work.

Android Rooting allows the user to modify the system such as removing the pre-installed apps they dislike. However, rooting is not easy like before. Google has introduced SELinux to the Android system. It required doing more work to achieve rooting function. Unluckily, some serious Android root exploits made Google’s beautiful plan wasted. One-click root apps or software used these exploits to root all the versions through Android 5.1.1. Then, Google strengthened control of system partition from Android 6. But there came out new method required an unlocked bootloader to root the devices. Hiit Media wants me to think out some solution to avoid rooting. After investigating the cause and effect of the rooting mechanism, I provide them the solutions in the end.

This master's thesis aims to develop a mobile application for the Google Android operating system based on customer requirements. Applications should serve to showcase customer's products, view calendar of courses and to let user book chosen course term. The work begins with research of a few chosen books focused on developing applications for Android and then client requirements are defined. Based on the results of research and defined customer requirements, detailed application specifications are laid down. Then there is presented architecture of whole application. The work ends with a pair of manuals. The first one is intended to the application administrator, whom it will serve during modifying and updating data. The second one is for user, whom it will assist during the process of application installation to the device and to introduce its control methods. The installation file of developed application is in the appendixes of this work.

Cálculo de descriptores de imágenes en dispositivos Android para un servicio de búsqueda de videos

Ingeniero Civil en Computación / Desde sus inicios en el cine el material audiovisual sólo se ha masificado y multiplicado. Luego del cine, la aparición de la televisión hace que el consumo este tipo de contenido sea aún más accesible que en épocas anteriores y con las primeras cámaras de video caseras el producir contenido audiovisual se vuelve de a poco más y más común. Gracias a los dispositivos móviles, cámaras de video y cámaras fotográficas cualquier persona puede generar contenido audiovisual. Además a lo anterior se le suman las producciones oficiales de videos musicales, películas, series de televisión, etc. por lo que la cantidad de contenido es enorme y poder identificarlo se vuelve un problema. Hoy en día gran parte de este contenido se encuentra sin etiquetar, es decir no contiene información asociada que lo identifique, haciendo difícil su búsqueda y reconocimiento. La búsqueda de videos cuando estos no se encuentran etiquetados requiere el uso de técnicas como la búsqueda por similitud. Esta búsqueda utiliza descriptores para encontrar videos. Los descriptores son vectores que contienen información del contenido del video, estos describen ciertas características del contenido como puede ser la distribución de colores, intensidad de luz, la ubicación y dirección de los bordes contenidos dentro de una imágen, etc. De esta forma la búsqueda por similitud se basa en comparar videos usando descriptores para establecer relaciones de semejanza entre videos. De acuerdo a estas relaciones de semejanza es posible encontrar videos que son similares entre sí. Actualmente existen soluciones disponibles capaces de realizar la búsqueda por similitud para archivos de video en un mismo computador, sin embargo esta solución no es de fácil acceso para las personas. En esta memoria se propone e implementa un sistema de búsqueda de videos que utiliza dispositivos móviles Android para grabar un video y calcular sus descrip- tores respectivos, para luego enviar los descriptores a un servidor para realizar una búsqueda por similitud haciendo uso de las herramientas existentes. Se evaluó la eficiencia del sistema propuesto comparando su tiempo de respuesta y uso de la red de datos con una implementa- ción alternativa del sistema, que envía videos completos al servidor para ser procesados. Por otro lado se evaluó la eficacia del sistema implementando tres tipos de descriptores de video distintos, y midiendo el porcentaje de respuestas correctas obtenido al usar cada uno. Los resultados obtenidos indican que los dispositivos móviles son capaces de realizar la extracción de descriptores eficientemente. El sistema propuesto es más eficiente que la al- ternativa de enviar videos completos al servidor, con respecto a este sistema alternativo se redujo el tiempo de respuesta del sistema en 30%, mientras que la cantidad de datos enviada al servidor pasó de más de 6 Megabytes a aproximadamente 20 Kilobytes. Con respecto a la eficacia del sistema, dos de los descriptores implementados mostraron resultados apenas mejores que el azar, mientras que el restante obtuvo una precisión cercana al 50%.
