Investigação da distribuição de tamanho de bolhas em um separador gás-líquido do tipo shroud invertido / Investigation of bubble-diameter distribution in a gas-liquid inverted-shroud separator

Barbosa, Marcel Cavallini 13 November 2015 (has links)
Oil mining operations powered by centrifugal submersible pumping systems suffer constant setbacks due to the presence of free gas in wells. Decompression in the reservoir liberates this gas in the form of bubbles that, upon reaching the suction end of the pump, cause cavitation and dynamic failures resulting in production and equipment losses. The Inverted-shroud gravitational separator is a possible solution to this problem. This work presents a study on diameters of bubbles that occur inside this separator. The goal is the improvement of the understanding of this kind of separator as well as the enhancement of a previously reported phenomenological model, which ensures total gas separation when the separator is installed in directional wells and under specific operational conditions. Empirically adjusted correlations are used to ensure that all entrained bubbles do not reach the pump. The model was tested for two-phase flows of water-air and oil-air mixtures using three different inclinations. Tests were performed with an experimental apparatus that simulates a pilot-scale well casing with an inverted-shroud separator installed. A 3D ORM particle-size sensor was employed in order to measure the average (sauter) diameter of entrained bubbles that are dragged by the liquid flow towards the end of the production tube. This investigation will be used to improve the reliability of the phenomenological model and reduce its dependency on a theoretical prediction of the bubble size. The findings were incorporated to the final version of an in-house gas separator design software developed at the request of PETROBRAS, the project funder and Inverted-shroud patent holder, for usage on its oil mining operations.

Separação gravitacional de gás em um duto anular inclinado: estudo experimental e modelagem fenomenológica / Gravitational gas separation in an inclined annular channel: experimental study and phenomenological modeling

Vidal, Luis Enrique Ortiz 22 April 2010 (has links)
This paper presents a study associated with gas separation in an inclined gas-liquid annular-duct flow. This type of flow and geometry are found in shroud-inverted gas separators applied to petroleum industries when using pumping technique for oil production. High void fraction at the pump suction of is one of the most important limitations of the SCP technique, causing cavitation and dynamics failures in the equipment. The present study aims to provide a solution for the total gas separation through the use of an innovative inclined inverted-shroud separator for directional wells. An experimental study, where air and water at near atmospheric pressure constituted the working fluids, was carried out to understand the phenomenology of the inclined inverted-shroud separator. Different annular-duct flows were observed: upward gas-liquid flow, single-phase open channel flow, downward gas-liquid flow due to the phenomenon of aeration; also new data of separation efficiency were collected as a function of inclination angle, liquid flow rate and pressure drop between the shroud and production pipe outlet. One of the most significant findings is that the liquid level of the inner annular channel (NAI) of the shroud is a very important variable in the phenomenon of separation; so far this was not reported in the literature. Based on the observations, a phenomenological model that predicts total gas separation is proposed. A new correlation for the modeling of the dissipation of turbulent kinetic energy associated with the gas separation is presented. The model was qualitatively compared with available data from the literature and quantitatively adjusted against the new experimental data obtained in this work, and the agreement was quite good.

Μελέτη χρονομεταβαλλόμενων και ασταθών υπό συνθήκες ροών ιξωδοπλαστικών και ιξωδοελαστικών ρευστών / A study on time-dependent and conditionally unstable flows of viscoplastic and viscoelastic fluids

Καραπέτσας, Γεώργιος 01 February 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to perform a study on time-dependent and conditionally unstable flows of viscoplastic and viscoelastic fluids because of their importance in various industrial processes. A typical experiment which is used widely for the rheological characterization of non-Newtonian fluids is squeeze flow which is the subject of the first chapter of this dissertation. The time-dependent simulation permitted the determination of the distinct differences between the two versions of this rheological experiment (disks moving with constant velocity or under constant force) which was impossible with the models used up to now, while a complete parametric analysis of this process is presented. The rest of this work focuses in the important problem of the extrusion process of a viscoelastic fluid, which is frequently encountered in the polymer industry. A complete parametric analysis is presented for the extrusion of a Phan-Thien Tanner (PTT) fluid from an annular die in order to examine the effect of the die geometry and the rheological properties of the fluid on this process. Moreover, it is widely known that during the extrusion from a cylindrical, planar or an annular die various flow instabilities may arise affecting significantly the quality of the final product. In order to investigate the mechanism, which causes the appearance of these instabilities, a linear stability analysis is performed for the cylindrical or planar stick-slip flow of a PTT fluid. The stability analysis is performed around the steady state solution and the eigenvalues of the generalized problem are calculated using the Arnoldi algorithm. With this method the effect of the various rheological properties of the fluid on the stability of the flow is determined.

El Niño Southern Oscillation teleconnections and their effects on the Amundsen Sea region

Yiu, Yu Yeung Scott January 2018 (has links)
El Niño Southern Oscillation events have global implications both climatologically and socio-economically. One such climatological teleconnection is manifested in the Amundsen Sea region (ASR). The Amundsen sea low (ASL) is the dominant low pressure system located around the ASR and is important to the climate of Western Antarctica. Therefore, it is important to understand the ASL and any phenomena that may affect it. This thesis focuses on the ENSO--ASR teleconnection under El Niño conditions and the mechanism behind it. The ENSO--ASR teleconnection was explored using the UM version 8.4 (HadGEM3) model. Time--slice experiments with various magnitudes of idealised perpetual ENSO events are imposed. Two sets of `switch on' experiments in which tropical Pacific SSTs were ramped up were also carried out to investigate the transient nature of the teleconnection. The seasonality of the ENSO--ASR teleconnection is known from previous studies to be stronger in winter compared to summer. The mechanism behind the seasonality was explored using the time--slice experiments. The seasonality is found to originate from the seasonal differences in the Southern Hemispheric jets. As the subtropical jet is only present in austral winter, Rossby wave source anomalies can only be generated in the mid--latitudes in winter. Furthermore, the propagation of the Rossby waves is not possible in summer due to the strong polar front jet. The lack of the source and propagation in summer explains the weaker ENSO--ASR teleconnection. A flowchart summarising the mechanism was created and then verified by the transient runs. The linearity of the ENSO--ASR teleconnection within El Niño has not been previously investigated. This is mainly due to insufficient reanalysis data available to overcome the high internal variability in the ASR. In this thesis, the linearity of the teleconnection under El Niño is studied using the time--slice runs. The results indicate linearity (within errorbars) for both the summer and winter seasons up to historically maximum El Niños. However, under extreme El Niños (beyond historic records) in winter, the teleconnection is no longer linear. The UPSCALE dataset was used to investigate the effects of horizontal resolution on the simulation of the ASL climatological state and the ENSO--ASR teleconnection. The UPSCALE dataset consists of ensembles of HadGEM3 simulations at three different horizontal resolutions. The high resolution model was found to better simulate the ASL while the low resolution model was found to better simulate the ENSO--ASR teleconnection.

Estudo experimental, simulação numérica e modelagem fenomenológica da separação gravitacional de gás no fundo de poços direcionais / Experimental study, numerical simulation and phenomenological modeling of gravitational separation of gas in down-hole directional wells

Fernando Augusto Alves Mendes 30 August 2012 (has links)
This research project proposes the study of the inverted-shroud gravitational gas separator for directional and horizontal wells. The innovative geometry is observed by the inclination that transforms a vertical, fast and chaotic downward flow into an inclined and segregated free channel flow. Due to inclination, the incorporation of gas at the internal gasliquid interface (NAI) is minimized; the segregation is increased due to the velocity gradient and the gravitational term that arises in the radial direction of the oil well. One of the aims of the experimental work is the obtaining of new data of gas separation efficiency as a function of the flow of liquid and gas, inclination angle and the evaluation of the degree of interference of the external annular duct flow. A dimensional analysis was undertaken to identify the relevant dimensionless numbers. It was found that the gas flow and the flow pattern in the external annular duct do not interfere in the separation efficiency. A flow pattern characterization was carried out through visualization and time and frequency domain analysis of differential pressure signature signal. Two mathematical models are proposed, a phenomenological model based on fundamental physical principles, which was able to predict with good accuracy the region of maximum separation efficiency, and a numerical model, which reproduced the phenomenology of the gas separation process.

Decompression in the reservoir liberates this gas in the form of bubbles that, upon reaching the suction end of the pump, cause cavitation and dynamic failures resulting in production and equipment losses. Performance study and modelling of an integrated pump and gas-liquid separator system: Optimisation for aero-engine lubrication systems

Steimes, Johan 26 August 2013 (has links)
A system able to simultaneously separate and pump a gas-liquid mixture was developed.<p>It works efficiently and can be used in many applications (nuclear power plants,<p>pulp and paper processing, petroleum extraction, etc.). However, this pump and separator<p>system (PASS) was especially designed to handle air-oil mixture generated in<p>aero-engine lubrication systems. The PASS combines three important functions of the<p>scavenge part of the lubrication system: the deaeration and deoiling of the air-oil mixture<p>generated in the bearing and gearbox sumps and the pumping of the oil towards<p>the tank. These are critical functions for the engine. Indeed, a poor deoiling efficiency<p>leads to a high oil consumption. This reduces the flight endurance, increases the size<p>and weight of the oil tank and has a negative impact on the environment. Poor deaeration<p>and pumping characteristics lead to problems in the cooling and the lubrication of<p>the engine bearings.<p><p>Integrating a PASS into the lubrication system allows considerable improvements<p>(and simplification) to the lubrication system architecture. An important number of<p>components are suppressed: the vent lines, the deoiler, the cyclone deaerator and the<p>scavenge pumps. This reduces the size and the weight of the lubrication system and<p>increases its reliability. Furthermore, an important part of this PhD thesis focuses on<p>reducing the oil consumption in the PASS. This improves the flight endurance, reduces<p>engine maintenance and working costs and is profitable to the environment.<p><p>In addition to the development of an advanced PASS design system, the objective of<p>this thesis was to obtain a good understanding of the separation processes occurring in<p>the PASS and to develop theoretical models able to predict the separation performance<p>for every working condition encountered in a typical aircraft flight. To achieve this<p>goal, three main tasks were performed: the development of different two-phase measurement<p>systems, the experimental tests of four different PASS architectures and the<p>theoretical development (after an extensive literature review) of correlations predicting<p>the performance of the PASS in function of the working conditions. Five specific aspects<p>of the PASS were studied: the inlet flow, the deoiling efficiency, the deaeration efficiency,<p>the pumping efficiency and the pressure drop. Finally, the models that have been developed<p>with the help of the measurement systems and of the experiments have been<p>integrated in a complete model of the lubrication system (under the EcosimPro modelling<p>environment). This helps to predict real in flight PASS working conditions and<p>performance. Indeed, the PASS is very sensitive to the engine working conditions and<p>an optimisation of the prototype size and performance is only feasible with an accurate<p>knowledge of these working conditions and a complete lubrication system model.<p>Finally, with the results of this PhD thesis, a new PASS design, optimised for different<p>aero-engine lubrication systems, is presented.

Observations of solar wind related climate effects in the Northern Hemisphere winter

Maliniemi, V. (Ville) 21 December 2016 (has links)
Abstract This thesis studies the long-term relation between the solar wind driven energetic particle forcing into the atmosphere and the tropospheric circulation in the Northern Hemisphere winter. The work covers the period of more than one hundred years since the turn of the 20th century to present. The thesis makes a statistical analysis of satellite measurements of precipitating energetic electrons, sunspot number data and geomagnetic activity, and compares them with temperature and pressure measurements made at the Earth's surface. Recent results, both observational and from chemistry climate models, have indicated significant effects in the Earth's middle atmosphere due to the energetic electrons precipitating from the magnetosphere. These effects include the formation of reactive hydrogen and nitrogen oxides in the high latitude mesosphere and the depletion of ozone caused by them. Ozone is a radiatively active and important gas, which affects the thermal structure and dynamics of the middle atmosphere. Accordingly, the depletion of ozone can intensify the large scale stratospheric circulation pattern called the polar vortex. Winter weather conditions on the surface have been shown to be dependent on the polar vortex strength. This thesis shows that there is a significant relation between the average fluxes of medium energy (ten to hundred keVs) precipitating electrons and surface temperatures in parts of the Northern Hemisphere in winter time. Temperatures are positively correlated with electron fluxes in North Eurasia and negatively correlated in Greenland during the period 1980-2010 which is covered by direct satellite observations of precipitating particles. This difference is especially notable when major sudden stratospheric warmings and the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), which both are known to affect the polar vortex strength, are taken into account. When extended to the late 19th century, the analysis shows that a similar temperature pattern is predominated during the declining phase of the sunspot cycle. The high speed solar wind streams and energetic particle precipitation typically maximize also at the declining phase of the solar cycle. This specific temperature pattern is related to the variability of the northern annular mode (NAM), which is the most significant circulation pattern in the Northern Hemisphere winter. Before the space era, geomagnetic activity measured by ground observations can be used as a proxy for energetic particle precipitation. Earlier studies have found a significant positive correlation between geomagnetic activity and NAM since the 1960s. We find that, when the QBO measured at 30 hPa height is in the easterly phase, a positive correlation is extended to the beginning of 1900s. We also show that high geomagnetic activity causes a stronger effect in the Northern Hemisphere winter than high sunspot activity, especially in the Atlantic and Eurasia. A comprehensive knowledge of the Earth's climate system and all its drivers is crucial for the future projection of climate. Solar variability effects have been estimated to produce only a small factor to the global climate change. However, there is increasing evidence, including the results presented in this thesis, that the different forms of solar variability can have a substantial effect to regional and seasonal climate variability. With this new evidence, the solar wind related particle effects in the atmosphere are now gaining increasing attention. These effects will soon be included in the next coupled model inter comparison project (CMIP6) as an additional solar related climate effect. This emphasizes the relevance of this thesis.

Synthèse de formaldéhyde par oxydation directe du méthane en microréacteur / Direct oxidation of methane to formaldehyde in an annular flow microreactor

Zhang, Jie 13 October 2011 (has links)
It is currently produced by a complex three-step process but a one-step process might require less energy. In this work, the direct gas phase partial oxidation of methane to formaldehyde has been studied through experiments and kinetic modeling. As formaldehyde is an intermediate in the sequential oxidation of methane, short residence times (<100 ms) have been considered in order to optimize its production. Thus, a quartz annular flow microreactor (annular space 0.5 mm wide), was chosen. The undertaken experiments consist of a systematic investigation of the effects of temperature (600-1000°C), residence time (20-80 ms), input composition XO2/XCH4 (0.5-15) and initial NO2 concentration (0-0.6%). Without NO2, the HCHO selectivity decreases with the increasing methane conversion. For a single pass operation, the best HCHO yield is 2.4% (950°C, 60 ms, XO2/XCH4 = 8). The addition of NO2 decreases the reaction initiation temperature by 300°C and it remarkably enhances the HCHO yield. The highest HCHO yield attains 9% (700°C, 30 ms, XO2/XCH4 =7) in the presence of NO2 (0.5%). For the reaction without NO2, the mechanism Gri-Mech 3.0 fits well the experimental results. For the reaction with NO2, by using the mechanism of Zalc et al. (2006) with some modifications, we obtained a good agreement between the experimental data and the model. The production and consumption flux analysis shows that the inter-conversion between NO2 and NO plays an important role in the reaction, because it continuously produces the reactive radicals OH• and it converts the radicals CH3• and CH3O2• to radicals CH3O•
