Roman Catholic seminary survival (1968-1983) : a multivariate statistical analysis of the CARA seminary directories

Rosinski, Bernard J. January 1985 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to provide a predictive account for a nearly 60 percent decrease in the number of Catholic seminaries extant in 1968. Standards for seminary operations published by the Catholic Bishops in 1968 and 1971 were hypothesized to have no predictive relationship with seminary survival. The population consisted of all qualified Catholic seminaries in the United States. Cell group arrangements, obtained from the intersection of seminary survival with seminary academic levels, served as criterion composites with a variety of seminary measures serving as predictor composites in four differentiated multiple discriminant analyses. Survival alone served as criterion with regression analysis. The annual CARA Seminary Directory served as database. Values for more than seventy measures were obtained for use with univariate hypotheses tests from the CARA Seminary Directory. The level of probability set for rejection of the null hypotheses was .05.Findings1.Student body size, number of doctors on faculty, number of bachelors on faculty, and diocesan Catholic population were among the successful stepwise predictors of seminary survival.2.Size of faculty, size of administration, total number of priests, articulation pattern, state approval, and number of professional memberships were among the unsuccessful stepwise predictors of seminary survival.3. Generally, hypothesized variables were unsuccessful blockwise predictors of survival.4.Seventeen significant discrimant functions were found in the four discriminant analyses; eight functions reduced to two successful predictors of seminary survival by seminary level for initial and terminal data sets: (1) faculty qualification, and (2) commitment to run a school.Conclusions1.Multivariate predictors of seminary survival based on 1968 data differed from predictors based on terminal data for the most part.2. Individual norms and standards proposed by the Catholic Bishops had an unanticipated joint effect upon seminary survival.3. For the most part, closure or amalgamation of seminaries could not be predicted by failure to fulfill particular norms or standards proposed by the Catholic Bishops.

Výzkum značky - případová studie metod měření loajality / Researching of brand - case study of measuring loyalty

Laisková, Monika January 2014 (has links)
Diploma thesis is about loyalty concept of customer in brand research. Thesis is divided into 2 parts. First part is theoretical introduction into concept of brand loyalty - definition of main terms, analysis of loyalty concept, historical context, possible methods of measurement and chosen theoretical approaches of various authors. Follows overview of measurement methods used by chosen market research agencies for loyalty measurement in practice. Those methods are derived from given theoretical approaches. Practical part consists of own loyalty research by mostly used methods. There were 3 methods used - Loyalty method by Millward Brown, TRI*M used by Aisa agency and Net promoter score, that is often used by companies for "self made" loyalty research. The aim is to compare results of those 3 methods of loyalty measurement. The same sample of respondents was used - the same people in the same time with the same attitude to chosen brand. Results were compared to each other and enriched by several discussions.

Improving evidence-based practice through preregistration of applied research: barriers and recommendations

Evans, T.R., Branney, Peter, Clements, A., Hatton, E. 16 August 2021 (has links)
Yes / Preregistration is the practice of publicly publishing plans on central components of the research process before access to, or collection, of data. Within the context of the replication crisis, open science practices like preregistration have been pivotal in facilitating greater transparency in research. However, such practices have been applied nearly exclusively to basic academic research, with rare consideration of the relevance to applied and consultancy-based research. This is particularly problematic as such research is typically reported with very low levels of transparency and accountability despite being disseminated as influential grey literature to inform practice. Evidence-based practice is best served by an appreciation of multiple sources of quality evidence, thus the current review considers the potential of preregistration to improve both the accessibility and credibility of applied research towards more rigorous evidence-based practice. The current three-part review outlines, first, the opportunities of preregistration for applied research, and second, three barriers - practical challenges, stakeholder roles, and the suitability of preregistration. Last, this review makes four recommendations to overcome these barriers and maximise the opportunities of preregistration for academics, industry, and the structures they are held within - changes to preregistration templates, new types of templates, education and training, and recognition and structural changes.

Astorne, Renzo, Lepage, Cesar 28 August 2014 (has links)
How to approach higher education for training in applied research in a "change of epoch" where knowledge has become a substantial asset to the generation of value in goods and services in organizations? What strategy should be implemented when its efficiency tends to be measured through mechanisms external to the research areas of the university? Two questions that allow, on the one hand, going the traditional way in which the university reiterates trivial mechanisms for engineering research training, and, on the other, the holistic -systemic-cybernetic- approach that promotes this same training in the context of complexity. This paper reviews the experience in the field of engineering, emphasizing the educational strategy aimed at achieving an insight of knowledge, where the university is facing increasing difficulty in setting the direction of the areas of applied research in engineering and associated training processes, i.e., in establishing the strategy.

Cisco Science: Using Omics To Answer A Range Of Key Questions

Lachance, Hannah 01 January 2019 (has links)
Coregonines, including cisco (Coregonus artedi), kiyi (Coregonus kiyi), and bloater (Coregonus hoyi), are a focus for prey fish conservation and restoration efforts throughout the Laurentian Great Lakes. However, fundamental questions about coregonine ecology and genetics remain. For example, we know little about how the early life stages of coregonines respond to environmental change at either the genotypic or phenotypic level. We also have limited knowledge about how to identify different species at the larval stage and the genetic relationships among species, which makes the different species difficult to study at the larval stage. To increase the probability for success in restoration efforts, current and future research need to integrate traditional and novel approaches to better understand what leads to current and future coregonine successes. We used DNA and RNA omics tools, genomics and transcriptomics to boost our comprehension of current coregonine populations and to help understand how C. artedi may respond to environmental change. During the winter of 2017, we conducted a pilot experiment to evaluate how C. artedi eggs may respond to increased light exposure resulting from current and expected reductions in annual ice and snow cover due to global warming. We used transcriptomics to assess differences in gene expression between a continuous light and continuous dark treatment. Our results indicate that light is an environmental factor that could lead to earlier hatch dates, smaller yolk sacs, changes in mortality and differential gene expression in metabolic related and other functionally important genes. In 2018, we sampled larval coregonines in the Apostle Islands of Lake Superior each week from hatch in May until late July. We used genomic sequencing to genetically identify 197 larvae to species: C. artedi, C. hoyi, and C. kiyi. The larval demographic characteristics of each species was assessed and revealed that length ranges, growth rates, yolk sac condition, and effective population size varied among species. Larvae of all three species were found throughout the entirety of the Apostle Islands and the genetic diversity within each species appears high. The results from our pilot experiment and field observations help advance our understanding of the important early life stages of coregonines and how changes in light exposure or growth rates could affect their success or failure in a changing climate.

ABSTRACT This research deepens knowledge about the Design Based Research Methodology - DBR and develops a proposal for a solution called Framework for its dissemination. It begins with the study of this methodology, expanding the view on the bases of its emergence, propagation and its modus operandi in other academic scenarios, so that from this larger context, it situates the works carried out by the groups Sociedade em Rede Pluralidade Cultural (Society in Network Cultural Plurality) and Conteúdos Digitais Educacionais – SR (Educational Digital Contents – SR), and Sociedade Solidária, Educação, Espaço e Turismo – SSEETU (Solidary Society, Education, Space and Tourism – SSESTU), as a field of study. The research problem emerged from this context; the specific objectives outlined for this research were answered, in this regard the DBR methodology was characterized; DBR studies developed by the SR and SSEETU groups were presented; and a DBR framework was developed, testing it in the context of research of the participating groups. In order to achieve such goals and analyze the information collected in the empirical field, the DBR itself was chosen as a methodology, in a socioconstructivist perspective, which made it possible to use a qualitative and exploratory approach, with the support of the review of literature, as well as mixed questionnaires as instruments for data collection in face-to-face meetings for their applications. The solution to this problem was found in the participanting collective and underwent three iterative cycles of application for refinement. The framework is built according to socio-constructivist principles and appropriate to the context of the participating groups. The results achieved were: the iterative cycles promoted reflections about the DBR for all participants involved and validated the effectiveness of the principles of the design employed; there has been an improvement in the implementation of the solution since the first application and the prototype generated in version 1 has undergone seventeen changes. The theory employed has been validated and it reinforced its design principles for future projects; the solution mediator model had its application extended by the expectation of its use in an online version, which will be planned and modeled in later studies; the researchers engaged in it added to their academic experiences new knowledge, deepened their knowledge about the DBR methodology and its form of application. The final evaluations made by them cope with the qualification of those involved in the research, regarding the improvement of their initial outlines of DBR research; the construction of the framework of theoretical principles of their researches; thinking about organizing a peculiar summary to the works of the groups; besides making possible the organization of strategies for conducting the research and context. There is evidence that the framework is both justified as a mediator solution for the development of DBR projects for the SR and SSEETU groups and for other researchers. These results show the effectiveness of this pedagogical tool developed under the epistemological bases of Lev Vygotsky's socioconstructivism, that support this research, as well as Antonio Gramsci´s praxiology, Paulo Freire's conceptions of historical and dialectical materialism and Bakhtin's dialogism. By observing these theories, it was possible to achieve the main goal of building the proposed solution using the Design Based Research methodology based on an epistemology that has a close relationship between the theoretical knowledge and practical experience, typical of applied research.
