The Relationship of Student Mathematics Scores on the Scholastic Aptitude Test to Teacher Effectiveness as Measured by the Texas Teacher Appraisal System

Clingman, Elizabeth Ann 12 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the scores on the quantitative portion of the SAT for 110 students and these students' math teachers' ratings on the TTAS, (2) to determine the nature of the relationship of the students' SAT scores to their teachers' TTAS ratings, and (3) to determine the nature of the relationship of the students' SAT scores to their sex. It was hypothesized that (1) there would be no significant relationship between a student's math score as measured by the quantitative portion of the SAT and the effectiveness of the student's math teacher as measured by the TTAS, and (2) there would be no significant relationship between a student's math score as measured by the quantitative portion of the SAT and the student's sex. The 110 subjects (60 males and 50 females) In this study took the quantitative portion of the SAT during the 1986-87 school year. This sample was drawn from a large suburban high school in the North Texas area. The effectiveness of the math teachers who taught the 110 students was measured by the Texas Teachers Appraisal System (TTAS). The statistical analyses indicated that (1) there was no significant relationship between a higher SAT score and a math teacher's higher TTAS rating and (2) there was no significant relationship between male and female SAT scores. Recommendations for future research include: (1) does the TTAS actually measure teacher effectiveness, (2) do appraisers in Texas follow state mandated training procedures, (3) does the quantitative portion of the SAT contain sexually biased items, (4) does the SAT actually predict student ability, (5) do teachers respond in like manner to male and female students, (6) does the high school curriculum tend to favor one sex more than the other.

DO ENFRENTAMENTO E DA VIVÊNCIA COM O CÂNCER: A AVALIATIVIDADE NO DISCURSO DO SOFRIMENTO / FROM CONFRONTATION AND EXPERIENCE WITH CANCER: APPRAISAL IN SUFFERING DISCOURSE

Nichele, Alessandra Medianeira Ilha 25 February 2014 (has links)
Through language we represent, under many ways, our emotional reactions. This way, verbalization of human experience takes the realization of meanings construction system. In this perspective, under Systemic Functional Grammar light (HALLIDAY; HASAN, 1989; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) and, specially, from The Appraisal System (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005), we have investigated which evaluative marks are recurrent in the discourse of people who experience cancer. In this sense, this research emphasis is on semantic valuation of suffering discourse, which is supported by Martin e White (2005) theoretical framework. The aim of this study is to chart which lexical choices and attitudinal resources build, by recurrence, the discourse of people who experience cancer. The corpus is composed by 10 interviews collected from Oncoguia portal, from the link Aprendendo com Você . In this context, the interviews take a great social relevance, in the humanistic sense, as a sharing of experiences, since they act breaking group, individual, social isolation; they can also serve to the pluralization of voices and to the democratic distribution of information (MEDINA 2008, p. 8), specially for being a huge fragility situation. The methodological procedures encompass the following stages: (1) elaboration of a list of words, through WordList resource (SCOTT, 2008); (2) identification and quantification of the most recurrent lexico-grammatical categories; (3) identification and categorization of the semantic subsystems of affect, judgment and appreciation; (4) semantic-interpretative data analysis. The results indicate a great recurrence of tenacity judgment categories and positive capacities, followed by affect for insecurity. Through judgment recurrences it is evident that overcoming is the watchword for the experiencers, who are determined to face and win cancer, since this is the only way of not submitting to mortality. The affect recurrences, focusing on the insecurity semantic field, indicate that the suffering experience triggers feelings of vulnerability and despair, bringing great sorrow for the fear of finiteness of life. The lexico-grammatical level investigations, more specifically in the ideational metafunction (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) indicate frequency of lexical marks in the first person, of relational processes (mainly to be ) and the intensifiers, which contributes for the painful experience manifestation the interviewees go through.

[pt] RASTROS E LASTROS DA CULPABILIZAÇÃO DA VÍTIMA: (RE)ENTEXTUALIZAÇÕES MORALIZANTES NOS DISCURSOS DOS ADVOGADOS DE DEFESA DOS CASOS ÂNGELA DINIZ E MARI FERRER / [en] TRACES AND BASES OF VICTIM BLAMING: (RE)ENTEXTUALIZATION IN DEFENSE ATTORNEY SPEECHES FROM ÂNGELA DINIZ AND MARI FERRER CASES

ELAINE BARBOSA AMARANTE DANTAS 24 November 2022 (has links)
[en] This research sheds light on discursive strategies of defense speeches given by the attorneys during the trial hearings of the Ângela Diniz (1979) and Mari Ferrer (2020) cases. It is our objective to compare how such speeches evaluate the lives of these women under an ideological prism, permeated by beliefs and power relations concerning social life and the legal sphere. Thus, we seek the bases and traces that update and (re-)entextualize a moralizing discourse on women which aims at blaming the victim. The data used for this research are public and were generated from the transcripts and audio of the Praia dos Ossos podcast episode O Jugamento, produced by Rádio Novelo and available on their website; and the video of the Mari Ferrer case trial, available on YouTube. This work is supported by recent (in-)disciplinary studies of Applied Linguistics (AL) that treat discourse beyond the text, as something that can be understood as action and that generates, projects and/or reverberates effects in society. The theoretical-methodological design of this research is qualitative, drawing on the socio-constructionist perspective and on post-modern studies of Discourse Analysis in order to investigate the effects of discourse on social life, on the (co-)construction of relationships and actions through discursive practices situated in a social and spatiotemporal context. At a micro-discursive level, the analysis of lexical-grammatical choices is based on the Appraisal System, pointing out how power relations, beliefs and social values operate in discourse.
