Previous issue date: 2007-03-30 / This study, part of Project Direct - Towards the language of business
communication (LAEL/PUC-SP), aims to present the results of a needs analysis
carried out in the professional context of 40 waiters and two managers of two
sophisticated restaurants in the city of São Paulo. To collect the data, three
questionnaires were used two were answered by the waiters, and the third, by
the restaurant managers. In order to conduct the needs analysis of these
professionals, we looked for support in Hutchinson s & Waters (1987)
languages for specific purposes approach (1987). These authors argue that the
needs analysis is extremely important, as it enables not only the implementation
of a course but also its continuous evaluation. The linguistic analysis of the work
is based on the Functional Grammar proposed by Halliday (1994, 2004) and his
collaborators - among others, Eggins (1994) and Martin & White (2005).
Functional Grammar is a language theory that focuses on the effective use of
language, that is, the manner in which the user uses language in different
contexts. Functional Grammar was employed to analyze the appraisal items
that occur in the waiters answers to the questionnaires, based on the Appraisal
System of Martin & White (2005) and on the analysis model proposed by
Eggins & Slade (1997). The results of the needs analysis and of the Appraisal
System analysis revealed that the most important items to be included in a
professional qualification course, according to the waiters, are: assistance to
restaurant clients, self-evaluation, and performance. The present work intends
to have contributed to the suggestion of a course proposal for the professional
development of waiters that takes into account the needs considered by the
waiters who participated in this study as relevant for professionals who intend to
work in the area / Este estudo, parte do Projeto Direct - Em direção à linguagem dos negócios
(LAEL/PUC-SP), tem como objetivo a apresentação dos resultados obtidos
com a análise de necessidades no contexto profissional de 40 garçons e dois
gerentes de dois restaurantes sofisticados da cidade de São Paulo. Para
consecução de tais objetivos, foram utilizados 3 questionários, sendo que dois
foram aplicados aos garçons e o terceiro foi aplicado aos gerentes dos
restaurantes. Para a realização do levantamento de necessidades desses
profissionais, apoiamo-nos na abordagem instrumental de Hutchinson & Waters
(1987), que afirmam que a análise de necessidades é de extrema importância,
pois é ela que, além de possibilitar a implementação de um curso, também
possibilita a sua avaliação contínua.
A análise lingüística do trabalho está fundamentada na Gramática Sistêmico-
Funcional proposta por Halliday (1994, 2004) e seus colaboradores, como
Eggins (1994), Martin & White (2005), dentre outros e foi utilizada para a
análise dos itens avaliativos que ocorrem nas respostas dos garçons aos
questionários, tendo como base o Sistema de Avaliatividade (Appraisal
System) de Martin & White (2005) e o modelo de análise proposto por Eggins &
Slade (1997).
Os resultados da análise de necessidades juntamente com o resultado da
análise do Sistema de Avaliatividade possibilitaram-nos identificar que os itens
considerados prioritários em um curso de aperfeiçoamento profissional pelos
garçons são: o atendimento, a auto-avaliação e o desempenho. O presente
trabalho pretende ter contribuído para a sugestão de uma proposta de curso
para desenvolvimento profissional de garçons, que considere as necessidades
apontadas pelos garçons participantes desta pesquisa como relevantes para os
profissionais que pretendem atuar na área

Previous issue date: 2013-07-01 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The subject of this Master's thesis is a critical analysis of how a persuasion toke place during a preaching speech done by Edir Macedo, in June 28th, 2012. There are always many possible ways of representing the same event or situation, but one specific representation gives a specific meaning to things, situations and events. Linguistic analysis of a preaching is an emerging field both in analysis of the speech and qualitative sociolinguistics, and it focus in linguistic codification into ritualistic practices, both in poorly controlled situations and Catholic genres, which are highly institutionalized, including homilies and other sermons given by legitimate religious (i.e. bishops and priests). Incidentally, the persuasive powers of religious speeches in general, and those given by evangelicals, particularly, are impressive and intriguing at the same time. However, how can they, through analogies and Bible passages, convince people to take the step that erases the space between the mental behavior of praying and the physical act of tithing? There are contained, not only empathetic and charismatic powers of the speaker, but also a lack of self-defense of their followers of describing what is true about their doctrine. Here is the item that my concern resides, since, as a Portuguese teacher, I m aware about the importance of a critical positioning from my students, towards available advertisements, speeches and promises that are apparently consistent, but actually are plenty of fallacies and faulty reasoning. This research is supported by Systemic Functional Grammar, whose principles are found in Critical Linguistics and the implicit and explicit Appraisal System, that responds widely in the creation of textual worlds for the persuasive force in the speech. The analysis shows that the preaching, attempting to persuade the faithful of Universal Church of the Kingdom of God, was supported by the representation of the tithing meaning, attached by the need of building a Temple, whose idealization would had come from the Lord himself. This speaking was legitimized by Edir Macedo for using of all kinds of legitimization as possible: i.e. emotion, hypothetical future, rationalization, voicing, altruism. These aspects, on the other side, bolster the argumentation that comes along the text that is leaned on frame the audience the ideological thing that permeates the speech - with the obvious purpose of manipulation. The analysis shows that resources, such as 'smuggling' information, implicit Appraisal, fallacy, and particularly, charisma and the ability of the speaker contribute decisively to the creation of a textual world that support the persuasion of his speech / O objetivo desta dissertação de mestrado é o exame crítico da persuasão que
perpassa um discurso de pregação, de Edir Macedo, pronunciado em 28/06/2012.
Há sempre muitas maneiras possíveis de representar um evento ou uma situação,
mas uma representação específica dá a objetos, situações e eventos ambíguos, um
significado específico. A análise linguística do discurso religioso é um campo recente
na análise do discurso e na sociolinguística qualitativa, e focalizam a codificação
linguística de práticas ritualísticas, tanto em interações pouco controladas quanto em
gêneros católicos altamente institucionalizados: entre eles, homílias e sermões
pregados por agentes religiosos legítimos (i.e. bispos e padres). A propósito, a força
persuasiva do discurso religioso em geral, e de pastores evangélicos em especial, é
impressionante e intrigante ao mesmo tempo. Contudo, como conseguem eles, por
meio de analogias e citações de passagens bíblicas, convencer as pessoas a dar o
passo que apaga o espaço que separa o fato mental da oração e a oferta concreta
de dízimos? Há aí, além da força empática e carismática do pregador, a pouca
defesa de que seus seguidores dispõem para avaliar a verdade de sua doutrinação.
É nesse item que incide a minha preocupação, já que, como professor de Língua
Portuguesa, percebo a importância da necessidade do posicionamento crítico em
meus alunos, em relação a propagandas, discursos e promessas, aparentemente
coerentes, mas plenos de falácias e raciocínios falhos. A pesquisa apoia-se na
Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional, em cujo bojo encontram-se a Linguística Crítica e o
sistema de Avaliatividade, explícita e implícita, que responde em grande parte pela
criação de "mundos textuais" a favor da força persuasiva de um discurso. A análise
mostrou que a pregação, na tentativa de persuadir os fiéis da IURD, apoiou-se na
representação do significado do dízimo, ligando-o à necessidade de erguer um
Templo, cuja idealização teria partido do próprio Senhor. Essa representação é
legitimizada por Edir Macedo por meio do apoio em todos os tipos de legitimização
possíveis: emoção, futuro hipotético, racionalização, vozeamento, altruísmo. Esses
tipos, por outro lado, amparam uma argumentação que percorre todo o texto, e que
conta com o enquadre mental dos ouvintes - a ideologia que permeia o discurso -
com o fim evidente de manipulação. A análise mostra que recursos como o
contrabando de informação, Avaliatividade implícita, falácia, e principalmente o
carisma e a habilidade do pregador contribuem decisivamente para a criação de um
mundo textual que apoia a persuasão de seu discurso

Employee Perceptions of Loyalty as a Factor of Performance. Grounded Theory ApproachGargouri, Chanaz 01 January 2017 (has links)
The relationship between employee loyalty and organizational performance has long been recognized but not included in performance appraisal models. This study identifies the perspectives of Master of Business Administration (MBA) candidates at a small private university in the eastern U.S. Fifteen interviews were conducted after distributing flyers among MBA classes and interested students volunteered to participate. The study was qualitative, based on personal interviews, to explore how loyalty is perceived in relation to performance. The theoretical framework used was Hogan's (1983) socioanalytic theory to explain differences in people's performance at work. Through use of a grounded theory approach, employees' perceptions on loyalty as a component of employee performance evaluation inducted to a theoretical model. This research shows, for the first time, loyalty as an expectation of performance from the perspective of individuals preparing to be future managers. The model explains the interrelationship between the suggested dimensions inducted from participants' perceptions for the purpose to assess both company and employee loyalty. The theoretical model demonstrates that a balance is needed to build a loyalty base between the company and employee loyalty that will lead to better performance. Specifically, respondents identified components of loyalty in the dimensions of integrity, flexibility, transparency support, dedication, conscientiousness, accountability, and advocacy. The model supports intuitive recognition that management behavior that creates employee loyalty also improves employee performance. The theoretical model can be used by researchers and human resource professionals to shape their quantitative research and organizational policies.

Previous issue date: 2017-12-18 / A cobrança por resultados gerenciais aumenta continuamente, o que leva os gerentes à busca por maior proficiência em competências (conhecimentos, habilidades e atitudes) necessárias ao cumprimento de objetivos cada vez mais agressivos. Por outro lado, a empresa necessita não só medir se os seus gerentes cumprem os objetivos organizacionais, mas de que forma o fazem. É o que se espera do sistema de avaliação de desempenho da organização. O objetivo do presente estudo foi determinar, se, e em que magnitude, o nível de proficiência individual em 6 competências gerenciais de gerentes de agência influencia o desempenho efetivo das agências nas quais atuavam em um dos maiores bancos comerciais do Brasil. Os dados foram coletados de avaliações reais de desempenho. Os resultados indicam claramente que a proficiência em competências gerenciais não estava ligada ao desempenho organizacional medido por variáveis objetivas de performance das agências. A proficiência na competência “sentido de dono” teve impacto irrelevante na nota final da agência e nos seus subcomponentes. Todas as outras competências não mostraram relação significante com as notas de desempenho das agências, indicando que a performance organizacional foi determinada por outros fatores não medidos neste estudo. Como os resultados contrariam estudos anteriores no Brasil e no exterior, o trabalho discute suas importantes implicações para a teoria e para a prática de gestão de pessoas e desempenho, em especial sobre avaliações de desempenho com base em competências e sua relação com práticas de remuneração e gestão de carreira em organizações. / The pressure for managerial results are increasing continuously. This mandates managers to develop stronger proficiency in competencies (knowledge, skills and attitudes) which are needed to achieve ever more aggressive objectives. On the other hand, the company needs to measure not only if their managers are achieving their strategic objectives, but also how they achieve their results. This is what is expected from an organization's performance appraisal system. The objective of the present study was to determine if, and to what extent, the level of individual proficiency in six managerial competencies influences the effective performance of the branches which they manage in one of the largest brazilian commercial banks. For this, the study verified whether the proficiency of these six competencies influenced the effectiveness of the performance of the branches managed by the subjects. The data was obtained from real performance evaluations. The results clearly indicate that proficiency in managerial competencies was not linked to organizational performance as measured from the branches performance system. The proficiency in the ownership competence had an irrelevant impact on the final evaluation of the branches and its subcomponents. All other competencies also did not show a significant influence on the branches performance scores, indicating that the organizational performance was determined by other factors not measured in this study. As the results contradict previous studies in Brazil and abroad, this paper discusses its important implications in theory and practice of people management and performance, especially regarding performance evaluation based in competencies and its relationship with remuneration practices and career management organizations.

2009), this thesis, which is inscribed in a qualitative-interpretative approach of a critical
analysis perspective , lies on the speech of social responsibility and the way like that is
employed in seeking for legitimacy and prestige within the neopentecostal brazilian
religious field, more specifically of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God. The general
goal of this research is t reflect upon the speech on social responsibility and the rethoric of
selfpromotion of the Universal Church through the role of social actors in the making of his
her identities, materialized in the newspaper Folha Universal. In order to achieve that, we
have conjugated, in this research, social and discursive analysis. On the linguistic-discursive
approach, the research is based on the Critical Analysis of Discourse (ACD), specially in
Fairclough (2001, 2003, 2006), a proposal that provides theoretical-methodological tools to
investigate the language beyond the linguistic structures , that is, the discourse, social
practices in which it occurs and more ample structures. Theoretical assumptions were also
used of Sistemico-Functional Linguistics(LSF), matching with categories of the Transitivity
System of Halliday (1994, 2004), of the forms of representation of social actors in the socioeconomic
perspective by Van Leeuwen (1997, 2008) and of the Appraisal system by Martin
and White (2005). As we develop the argumentation on thesobre social role of religion in this
thesis, we make use of the authors such as Freston (1994), Oro (1997, 2003), Campos (1996,
1999), Mariano (1999), Meneses (2008), among several ones. We have also used a series of
concepts and categories coming from the field of communication and marketing on the
business social responsability and social marketing . In this area, we take as references the
contributions of Bueno (2003), Foss? and Sartoretto (2003) and Zenone (2006). The corpus of
the work is framed by news taken at the newspaper Folha Universal, in which are given the
social responsibility actions of the church . The timeframe used was on the editions of 2010
thru 2012. Results found at he analysis of the News lead to semantic features of Assessment
of Affection, Judgment and Appreciation, many times followed by Gradation, and the
Attribution, one of the subsystems of the Attachment, are evidence of positive assessments for
the Universal Church and its agents and make up rethorical elements which provide structure
for the discourse of the Universal Church at the newspaper Folha Universal consisted of its
image (style) of social responsibility . Results show that the most frequente social actors of
the discourse are, on one hand, the Universal Church itself and its volunteers, famous (actors,
actresses, presenters), politicians and authorities, on the other hand, the population which was
helped by the Church social projects . The first group seems to be Always activated, however
the second one, most of the time rather passive. These are also represented by assimilation in
most of the occurrences, however the other ones by individualization and nomination
entitled by honorification, except for the volunteers that are represented either as an

Aprecia??o, muitas vezes acompanhados de Grada??o, e a Atribui??o, um dos subsistemas do
Engajamento, evidenciam avalia??es positivas para a Igreja Universal e seus agentes e
constituem elementos ret?ricos estruturadores do discurso da Igreja Universal no jornal Folha
Universal constitutivos da sua imagem (estilo) de responsabilidade social. Os resultados
mostram que os atores sociais mais frequentes no discurso s?o, de um lado, a pr?pria Igreja
Universal e seus volunt?rios, os famosos (atores, atrizes, apresentadores), pol?ticos e
autoridades, e de outro, a popula??o assistida pelos projetos sociais da Igreja. O primeiro

Previous issue date: 2017-08-18 / The objective of this research is to understand how the teaching of Portuguese for the deaf is being discussed by users of Portuguese blogs for the deaf, in which linguistic analyzes will be carried out under the Systemic-Functional Grammar. The research is of the qualitative-interpretative type and blogs have been used where tips on how to teach the Portuguese language to these students. Studies on the area of deafness showed that the Brazilian Sign Language(Libras) should be the first language to be acquired by the deaf, to further assist them in learning Portuguese as L2 or second language, in writing mode. The Systemic Functional Grammar is analyzed over Appraisal through the Portuguese language teaching blogs for the deaf by the GSF Attitude System applied in the comments of the participants of the posts of blogs who are professionals in teaching Portuguese to deaf people. Technological advances provide efficiency and convenience in the teaching-learning process of the Portuguese language through the use of blogs as a tool. We conclude that the blog advantage is favoring bilingualism and can be accessed in two languages or more. Thus, both Libras and Portuguese can help the deaf learning process, and they have also space for images which support the linguistic transcription of both languages. / O objetivo desta pesquisa é compreender como o ensino de português para surdos vem sendo discutido por usuários de blogs de Língua Portuguesa para surdos, em que se farão análises linguísticas com base no Sistema de Avaliatividade no âmbito da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional. A pesquisa é do tipo quanti-qualitativa e foram utilizados textos de postagens em blogs onde se encontram dicas de como ensinar a Língua Portuguesa a esses estudantes. Estudos sobre a área da surdez mostraram que a Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) deve ser a Primeira Língua a ser adquirida pelos surdos, para posteriormente auxiliá-los no aprendizado da Língua Portuguesa como L2 ou Segunda Língua, na modalidade escrita. A Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional é analisada pelo Sistema de Avaliatividade, nos posts de blogs de ensino da Língua Portuguesa para surdos, por intermédio do Sistema de Atitude da GSF aplicado nos comentários dos usuários dos blogs que são profissionais da área de ensino de português para surdos. Os avanços tecnológicos vêm proporcionando maior eficiência e praticidade no processo ensino-aprendizagem da Língua Portuguesa para surdos e os blogs são uma das ferramentas utilizadas. Percebe-se que uma das vantagens do blog é que favorece o Bilinguismo, podendo ser acessado nas duas línguas. Neste caso, a Libras e o português auxiliando o processo de aprendizagem do surdo, tendo espaço também para imagens que servem de apoio na transcrição linguística de ambas línguas.

As an introduction to the study, the developmental appraisal system in other countries was reviewed. In doing so the South African developmental appraisal system was compared with other countries, and the common characteristics were highlighted. Educators* perceptions of developmental appraisal in other countries were also focused on.
The literature review reflects that there has been a paradigm shift in teacher evaluation from a judgmental approach to a developmental approach. In the judgmental approach there is a tendency to find fault, to be negative in reports that are written and not to acknowledge the positive things that educators do. The main aim of the developmental appraisal is to facilitate the personal and professional development of educators in order to improve the quality of teaching practice and education management. The primary aim of this investigation was to investigate educators' perceptions of developmental appraisal through the medium of literature and empirical study.
The implementation of developmental appraisal, appraisal and staff development and the integrated quality management system were investigated using the literature and empirical study. The study revealed that educators have a negative perception of developmental appraisal.
For the purpose of the empirical investigation, a self-structured questionnaire was utilized. An analysis was undertaken using 217 questionnaires completed by educators in the eThekwini Region- The data obtained from the completed questionnaires was processed and analysed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Essentially the following were the main research findings:

• the process of developmental appraisal did not contribute to the development of educators;
• outside assessors were not invited when needed;
• the rating scale of A or B was not adequate;
• appraisal of educators did not result in improvement of qualifications;
• the quality management initiatives resulted in an unnecessary increase in educator's workload; and
• a better working relationship between the staff development team and the school management team was encouraged.
The summary and findings emanating from the literature study and the descriptive and inferential statistics were presented. Based on these findings the following recommendations were made:
• The Department of Education must re-introduce incentives and rewards for further study.
• The inclusion of an appraisee from the outside on the appraisal panel should be made compulsory.
• The Department of Education, teacher unions, principal's forum and other educational organizations must convene seminars, workshops and training programmes for appraisal panel members.
• Further research should be conducted on the following:
> The changing role of the educator and its impact on developmental appraisal.
> The success of developmental appraisal based on the staff development team's leadership style.
> Educators' perceptions of what role developmental appraisal serves in the integrated quality management system.

[pt] Esta pesquisa, de caráter discursivo, analisa como as decisões sobre prisão domiciliar para mulheres, mães de crianças menores de 12 anos e/ou gestantes, são construídas discursivamente por juízes e desembargadores. Parte-se das leis e normas nacionais constantes no Artigo 318 do Código de Processo Penal brasileiro, o Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente, o Habeas Corpus 143.641/SP com decisão do Supremo Tribunal Federal e também as Regras de Bangkok - Regras das Nações Unidas para o Tratamento de Mulheres Presas e Medidas Não Privativas de Liberdade para Mulheres Infratoras – das quais o Brasil é signatário para, então, se analisar um corpus constituído de 16 Acórdãos, compreendidos entre os anos de 2017 e 2019, da comarca da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, para os casos de concessão ou não de prisão domiciliar como pena alternativa. As decisões em primeira instância são referenciadas em alguns momentos da análise tendo em vista as entextualizações feitas pelos profissionais no decorrer dos procedimentos judiciais. Também são analisadas as leis e documentos oficiais citados acima. Trata-se de uma análise discursiva, qualitativo-interpretativista e interdisciplinar, que articula os estudos da Linguagem e do Direito do âmbito da Linguística Aplicada, mais especificamente da Linguística Forense. Após avaliar a relação sócio-histórica entre maternidade, feminismo e encarceramento e descrever o gênero acórdão com apoio das noções de cronotopo, cronotopo jurídico e entextualização, a lente discursiva desta tese se volta, com apoio do Sistema de Avaliatividade, para os índices avaliativos e morais sobre o comportamento feminino presentes nas decisões. Embora as normas nacionais e internacionais sejam convergentes em relação a (i) importância do convívio entre mãe e filho na primeira infância; (ii) especificidades em relação à prisão de mulheres e de gestantes e (iii) crítica ao encarceramento feminino, que vem aumentando consideravelmente no Brasil e no mundo, o que se observa, como resultados de pesquisa, é que: (i) os discursos construídos pelos julgadores são, muitas vezes, moralizantes, baseados na ideia de que a mulher perde a capacidade de ser mãe uma vez que comete um delito e (ii) os magistrados desconsideram os discursos presentes nas normas e leis existentes, mantendo a orientação punitivista que contribui diretamente para o aumento do quantitativo de mulheres encarceradas no Brasil. / [en] This discursive research analyzes how decisions about house arrest for women, mothers of children under 12 years of age and/or pregnant women are constructed discursively by judges. It is based on national laws and rules such as the Article 318 of the Brazilian Code of Criminal Procedure (Artigo 318 do Código de Processo Penal brasileiro), the Child and Adolescent Statute (Estatuto da Criança e do Adolescente), the Habeas Corpus 143.641/SP with the Supreme Court (Supremo Tribunal Federal) decision and the international Bangkok Rules - United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-Custodial Measures for Women Offenders – of which Brazil is a signatory, in order to analyze a corpus consisting of 16 Judgments, between the years of 2017 and 2019, of the district of the city of Rio de Janeiro, for cases of granting or not of house arrest as an alternative penalty. Decisions at first instance are referenced at some moments of the analysis with regard of the entextualizations made by professionals during legal proceedings. The laws and official documents mentioned above are also analyzed. This is a discursive, qualitative- interpretative and interdisciplinary analysis, which articulates the studies of language and law in the field of Applied Linguistics, and more specifically to Forensic Linguistics. After evaluating the socio-historical relationship between motherhood, feminism and imprisonment, describing the judgment as a textual gender with support of the perspectives of chronotope, legal chronotope and entextualization, the discursive lens of this thesis turns, with the support of the Appraisal System, to the evaluative and moral indicators on the female behavior shown in the decisions. Although national and international rules converge to (i) the importance of interaction between mother and child in early childhood; (ii) the specificities in relation to the arrest of women and pregnant women and (iii) the criticism of female incarceration that has been increasing considerably in Brazil and worldwide, what is observed, as the research results, is that: (i) the discourses constructed by the judges are often moralizing, based on the idea that women lose the ability to be a mother once they commit an offence; (ii) the judges disregard the discourses present in the existing norms and laws, maintaining the punitive orientation that directly contributes to the increase in the number of women incarcerated in Brazil.
