Composição, densidade e variação espaço-temporal de larvas de decápodes e estomatópodes do arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo, Brasil / Composition, density and spatial-temporal distribution of decapods and stomatopods larvas of the Saint Paul\'s archipelago, Brazil

Koettker, Andrea Green 09 May 2008 (has links)
The present study describes the composition, density and the temporal, diel and spatial distribution of decapod and stomatopod larvae present in surface waters of Saint Paul\'s Rocks. The expeditions to the archipelago were carried out in April, August and November of 2003, March of 2004 and May of 2005. Surface plankton samples were collected during the morning and dusk, inside the bay and in stations 150, 700 and 1500 m away from the archipelago. The identification resulted in 51 decapod and 6 stomatopod larvae. Seven species, eight genera and individuals belonging to the families Oplophoridae, Pandalidae, Scyllaridae and Oplophoridae were identified for the first time in the area. The mean larval density varied from zero to 150,2 ± 69,6 individuals · 100 m-3 in the waters around the archipelago and from 1,7 ± 3,0 to 12.827,1 ± 15.072,9 individuals · 100 m-3 inside the bay. Significant differences in larval density were verified between months and day periods, but not among different distances from the archipelago. The results suggest that the bay and the waters around the archipelago are different in terms of larval composition, density and diversity.

Estudo da variabilidade na distribuição espectral das ondas de Rossby baroclínicas no Altântico e em particular na região do arquipélago de Abrolhos / Spectral variability distribution of baoclinic Rossby waves in the Atlantic Ocean and particulary in the rgon of the Abrolhos archipelago

Krieger, Sebastian 22 September 2008 (has links)
Fifteen years of sea surface height anomaly (SSHA) from merged TOPEX/Poseidon and Jason-1 datasets gridded using an autocorrelation-based interpolation method are used to test the spectral variability of first mode baroclinic Rossby waves in the Atlantic Ocean. The gridding method is innovative and was specifically developed for this purpose. Mean SSHA, trends and monthly climatologies were determined globally. The global SSHA trends show regions of rising sea level of more than 10mmyr1 and some regions of sinking the same order of magnitude. A two-dimentional wavelet analisys-based methodology was entirely developed for the purpose of this study and is unprecedently applied to the altimetry data. SSHA longitude-time diagrams are filtered through the twodimentional wavelet filter and decomposed to obtain at certain latitudes the variation of the seasonal cycle and of the propagating signal linked to these waves. The methodology is first applied to the Pacific Ocean at 28,5±N to validate the results with the available literature and then applied to the Atlantic Ocean with detail at the latitudes 32,5±N and 17,5±S. The calculated phase velocities for the Atlantic range from 20kmday1 at 10± latitude to 2kmday1 at 38± latitude. The spectral variability of Rossby waves is analysed at three locations: 28,5±N 134,3±E, 32,5±N 73,5±W and 17,5±S 35,2±E. In all cases spectral change is observed in time, at the annual, semi-annual and quarterly spectral bands both in intensity and in persistence. Furthermore, through the longitude-time spectral power distribution analysis in various spectral bands, there is spatial variability in the Rossby wave spectrum.

Riftwalking: the dissolution of socio-ecological resilience and the role of resilience thinking in metabolic rifts

Broe, Ryan 29 May 2019 (has links)
This thesis asks what effects concepts of resilience may have on political action and the ongoing ecological crises we see developing throughout the world. Specifically, it addresses disruptions in wild salmon migration, spawning, and fisheries brought about by industrial aquaculture in the so-called Broughton Archipelago in unceded Kwakwaka’wakw territories on the north east coast of Vancouver Island. These disruptions will be looked at as examples of resilience thinking in action. Through this example this thesis will examine the relationship between manifestations of resilience thinking and the emergence of metabolic rifts between nature and society that bring with them ecological crises. This thesis will begin by tracing the genealogy of resilience thinking from its origins in systems ecology to its depoliticizing formation in political-economic development. Through this it will show where resilience has been split from its origins as a socio-ecological concept, into purely social and ecological formations that interact in a zero-sum relationship. As a depoliticizing force, resilience works through the aforementioned cleavage to atomize individuals and distance them from their connections to socio-ecological communities, favouring instead marketized relations that reinforce capitalism, colonialism, and the state form. Following this, this thesis will argue that this cleavage and resilience thinking more broadly also generate sites of metabolic rifts within and between nature and society and are factors in their reproduction and geographic spread. Resilience however need not be a fully depoliticizing force. Taking up from the work of Roberto Esposito on relational community and immunization, this thesis ends with an exploration of how resilience thinking can return to its socio-ecological roots and be used in emancipatory, decolonial, and ecologically sound ways that will help in the reconstituting of the metabolic cycles within and between nature and society disrupted by rifts. Understanding how resilience thinking plays a role in depoliticization and the generation and reproduction of metabolic rifts makes space for turning this mentality on its head. Reconstructing a more holistic socio-ecological form of resilience helps to provide the necessary political tools to challenge underlying structures of domination and exploitation that put our socio-ecosystems at risk. / Graduate

Caracterização gravimétrica da zona de fratura São Paulo e Arquipélago São Pedro e São Paulo na porção Equatorial do Oceano Atlântico / Gravimetric characterization of St. Paul Fracture Zone and Archipelago and St Peter and St Paul in the equatorial portion of the Atlantic Ocean

Medeiros, Roberta Ladislau de 24 September 2010 (has links)
The investigation of the Earth by gravity implies a lot of information about the interior at different scales of observation. This study considered research previously conducted in the area of St. Paul Fracture Zone (ZFSP) Archipelago and St Peter and St Paul (ASPSP), the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean, whose petrological and geochemical data indicate the presence of a thermal anomaly. In this area some geophysical surveys have been conducted, but nothing that would contribute significantly by gravity data. The main objective of this work is the characterization of gravimetric St. Paul Fracture Zone by gravity data, free air anomaly, Bouguer anomaly, the gravity gradient tensor and residual geoid height. As a secondary objective, have sought the expression of this thermal anomaly in the field geopotential. However, the results indicate that the effect of bathymetry on this data should be taken into consideration. Since the study area is located in the equatorial portion of the mid-ridge atlantic and the process of isostatic compensation in this area is influencing the gravity values at the site. Therefore required the confluence of other geophysical methods to detect the expression of this thermal anomaly.

Rossetti, Marcos de Magalhães May January 2017 (has links)
A erupção gerou quatro flow fields: Ribeira do Almeida, Queimada, Ribeira do Nabo I e Ribeira do Nabo II. / The historic eruption of 1580 A.D. occurred in the southwestern of São Jorge Island, in the central Azores covering a total area of 4 km². This work provides a characterization of the distribution and morphology of the 1580 A.D. lava flows, integrated to petrography and geochemistry. The eruption formed four distinct flows fields: Ribeira do Almeida, Queimada, Ribeira do Nabo I and Ribeira do Nabo II. Detailed geological analysis allowed the identification of spiny, sheet and sllaby pahoehoe and ‘a´ā lava morphotypes. Near the vent, the flow fields are characterized by channelized ‘a´ā flows. With continuous eruption, these lavas flowed downwards forming fan-shaped lava deltas when entering the sea. Sheet pahoehoe flows overlay the ‘a´ā lavas and with continuous inflation the surface of the flows breaks generating slabby pahoehoe surface. The gradual increase in surface fragmentation form rubbly surfaces. In the late stages of the eruption channelized ‘a´ā flows were emplaced, depositing laterally and over the sheet pahoehoe flows. The variations in the lava surface are controlled by the effusion rates and the topography. Petrographically, all lava flows are olivine basalts. The chemistry of the basalts indicate an alkaline nature for the 1580 volcanism. The less-evolved compositions are found in Ribeira do Almeida and this fact can be related to continuous recharge of the magma chamber with more primitive melts. Normalized REE profiles show that the basalts were generated by low volumes of melt of an enriched OIB source. The study of the physical aspects of 1580 lava flows with petrography and geochemistry allowed understand the geologic history of this event.

Reading across the Archipelago : anglophone and francophone Caribbean perspectives on place and ontology by Jamaica Kincaid and Gisèle Pineau

Sherratt-Bado, Dawn Miranda January 2014 (has links)
This interdisciplinary study traces the relationship between place and ontology in anglophone and francophone Caribbean contexts, respectively, in selected fictional texts by contemporary Afro-Caribbean women writers Jamaica Kincaid and Gisèle Pineau. In particular, the thesis considers the ways in which notions of place are complicated by the fact that these authors are doubly diasporic. Kincaid and Pineau are of the African diaspora, and they are also migrant writers who travel back and forth between the Caribbean neocolonies and the neoimperia (the United States for Kincaid and France for Pineau). The Antiguan-born Kincaid relocated to the United States as an adolescent and continues to reside there today – despite not having renounced her Antiguan citizenship. Pineau was born and raised in Paris by Guadeloupean parents, who later transplanted the family to their Caribbean homeland when Pineau was an adolescent. After moving between the Caribbean and Paris throughout the ensuing decades, Guadeloupe is now her primary place of residence. Kincaid and Pineau, who are of the same generation and from neighbouring Caribbean islands, share fascinating points of intersection and divergence with regard to their treatment of place and ontology in their oeuvres. This project draws upon a number of theoretical paradigms and examines them in conjunction with Kincaid and Pineau’s fiction in order to discern whether or not these models are apposite to their work. Some examples are: decolonisation/decolonial, postcolonial, womanist and feminist, gender, critical race, psychoanalysis, trauma, ecocritical, spatial, semiotic, ethnographic, Marxian and post-Marxist, poststructuralist, deconstructionist, postmodernist, aesthetic and anti-aesthetic, and photographic theories. The thesis opens with an introductory chapter that locates my research within larger, ongoing discussions of place and ontology in the field of postcolonial studies. It also explains the methodological approaches of the project, in addition to brief descriptions of subsequent chapters. The first chapter of the investigative body of the thesis outlines the decolonising theoretical axiomatics which underpin Kincaid and Pineau’s fictional writings. Next I provide a chapter each on key works by Kincaid and Pineau in order to establish their individual thematic and formal concerns before turning, in the ensuing chapters, to connective readings of their texts within certain contextual frameworks. I also examine Kincaid and Pineau’s imbricated treatment of connecting themes that appear to ricochet throughout their corpora of writings. This linkage between landscape and ontology is fundamental to understanding migration experience in that multiple landscapes and cultures become rooted in individual and collective identities as complex biographic phenomena. Kincaid and Pineau address this relationship between the environment and (auto)fiction as a way of investigating the constitutive relations between place, body, and ontology.

Bisi, Tatiana Lemos 11 September 2006 (has links)
To characterize the behavior of humpback whales calves, a study was conduct around Abrolhos Archipelago, an important nursing area for the species in Brazil. It was investigated aspects of the behavioral development of calves, behavioral differences between calves of different breeding seasons and also the effects of the presence of one escort in the behavior of calves. The data were collected from 1998 to 2004, through the months of July to November, from a land-base station on the top of Santa Barbara Island at the Abrolhos Archipelago. The chosen method was animal focal sampling, with record of all behavioral events and state occurrences, using a theodolite. A total of 207 focal observations were analyzed, comprising 313.65 hours of sampling. Humpback whales calves exhibit a very diverse behavioral repertoire, with a strong variation in the occurrence rate. More frequent events were PEDUNCLE ARCH, BREACH, EXPOSITION OF HALF OF THE FLUKE and TAIL SLAP; and the less frequent were TAIL SLASH, BELLY-UP, TAIL WAVE and PEDUNCLE ELONGATION. Among the behavioral states, calves remained more time SWIMMING (mean: 42.21%). MILLING was the second most frequent state (mean: 29.86%), followed by RESTING (mean: 20.91%) and ACTIVE was the least frequent (mean: 7.02%). The high frequency of occurrence of some behavioral events as well as the high proportion of time SWIMMING suggest that these behaviors are important to the development of coordination and motor ability and also to muscle strengthening. In this way, the calves can develop abilities needed to future social interactions and reproduction, but also to current needs, as in the development of the relationship with its mother, for nursing and for preparing to migration. There was a significant effect of phase of the season on rate of occurrence of PEDUNCLE ARCH, HEAD EXPOSITION, HEAD SLAP, EXPOSITION OF HALF OF THE FLUKE and PECTORAL EXPOSITION. However it was not possible to identify a specific development stage. Ten of 18 behavioral events showed variation in the rate of occurrence along the seven breeding seasons studied, also the proportion of time RESTING state showed a significant difference among seasons. Despite the observed differences among some years, they did not show any pattern. In the presence of one escort the behavior of calves changed. The rate of occurrence of PEDUNCLE ARCH, HEAD EXPOSITION and LAP was significant lower. Besides, calves remained more time SWIMMING and less time RESTING than when calves were only accompanied with their mothers. Studies suggest distinct functions to escorts, including provide protection to calves. However in face of the behavioral changes and increase in speed of swimming, the presence of one escort seems not to be an advantage, on the contrary seems to have a negative effect to the calf, at least in the energetic demand.

/
Mercury emissions have been reduced in recent years but the discharges still exist and there exist a great mercury stock out in the nature. Inorganic mercury is relatively harmless for living organisms but during shortage of oxygen, sulphur reducing bacteria can transform inorganic mercury into the considerable more toxic substance methyl mercury, meHg, that are more bio available than inorganic mercury. Mercury biomagnify upwards the trophic levels, where the lowest content exists in algae and sediment living fauna and the highest content exist in predator fishes. Mercury also accumulates in fishes muscle tissue, meaning that young fishes have lower mercury content than old and big individuals. Food advices from the Swedish food agency exist because of this. Perch offered for sale are allowed to have a content of maximum 0.5 mg Hg/kg fish muscle (wet weight) and for pike the upper boundary content is 1 mg Hg/kg fish muscle (wet weight). Inorganic mercury can affect foetus negatively, and therefore women in fertile age should avoid fish with high mercury content for as long as possible.

The aim of this exam work is to illustrate the mercury situation in the archipelago of Stockholm regarding stationary coast fish. Information was collected through a literature study and by field examines done by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute Ltd. Through statistical analyses and stepwise multiple regression it was shown that the mercury content in sediment, chlorophyll and the water volume of the area contributed by statistical explanation to the mercury concentration in fish. On the basis of the most significant variables a statistical model was created, with the purpose of predicting theoretical mercury contents in fish. Different model combinations were tested and by a model validation the best model were chosen. Its statistical explanation is 81 % were the mercury content in the sediment is the only input variable to the model.

The mercury situation in the Stockholm archipelago was presented graphically by interpolated maps created with GIS. The same area boundary as SMHI’s maritime registry was used. It was shown that the situation in general is relatively good, with the exception of the central parts of Stockholm. Because of this Stockholm can be seen as a polluting point source.
