Given this scenario, a determined approach stands out: the social architecture. In today's global economy, the architect obtains a status of Super Star, mainly targeting their architectural production for works that generate visibility and profit. However, the economic crisis of 2008 strengthened the emergence of a new group of architects who claim the social dimension of architecture. This group aims at linking and highlighting the social language in contemporary architecture and its local commitment by integrating a vernacular thought to a global understanding in order to reaffirm the importance of the social and political function of an architect, not just the practical, formal and aesthetic function. The scope of this dissertation girds up the analysis of the contemporary design process under the theoretical vision of important scholars of design, such as Stuart Walker, Victor Papanek, Alastair Fuad-Luke. Therefore, some projects of architect Alejandro Aravena that had emphasis on democratization of architectural design were analyzed, in order to identify effective relations between social aspects, ethics and design process in contemporary world. For this dissertation, design is approached as a complex area covering projective processes comprised both in architecture and in the design itself. / A presente dissertação visa compreender o aspecto social sob o viés do processo projetual, que está em contínua reestruturação. Perante esse cenário, uma abordagem se destaca: a abordagem social. Na atual economia global, o profissional ganha status de Super Star, direcionando principalmente sua produção para obras que gerem visibilidade e lucro. Todavia, a crise econômica de 2008 deu força ao surgimento de um novo grupo que reivindica a dimensão social do processo projetual. Esse grupo visa interligar e destacar a linguagem social no processo projetual contemporâneo e seu comprometimento local, integrando um pensamento vernacular a uma compreensão global, de modo a reafirmar a importância da função social do profissional, e não apenas a função prática, formal e estética. O escopo desta dissertação cinge-se à análise do processo projetual contemporâneo, sob a visão teórica de importantes estudiosos do Design, como Stuart Walker, Victor Papanek e Alastair Fuad- Luke. Para tanto, foi feita a análise de alguns projetos do arquiteto Alejandro Aravena, que tiveram ênfase na democratização do projeto arquitetônico, com o intuito de identificar as efetivas relações entre aspectos sociais e éticos com o processo projetual na contemporaneidade. Para tal, entendemos o design como área complexa, abrangendo processos projetuais compreendidos tanto na arquitetura quanto no próprio design.

Esta dissertação de mestrado versa sobre algumas questões acerca de participação, tais como estratégia na educação e para a cidadania, da conquista de espaços públicos em suas transformações físico-políticos e qualitativo na gestão ambiental. Trata-se da análise das experiências em assentamentos subnormais em que, apesar terem sido trabalhos contratados pelo poder público, o arquiteto/pesquisador procurou planejar, desenvolver e xecutar os projetos através da visão de quem estava recebendo os investimentos. Entendendo que participar é poder tomar decisão em algum processo que irá mudar o destino de uma determinada situação, de forma espontânea ou não, mirando um futuro que desde já no presente deve ser melhorado. Assim é preciso que os sujeitos sociais tomem de informações preciosas, e provoque discussões num espaço múltiplo, diversificado perceber e encarar as questões da paisagem relamente relevantes. Fruto da discussão, podem começar a aparecer soluções criativas, no processo de tomada de decisão que melhor atenda às necessidades e aos anseios da população em questão. Muitos foram os conflitos, principalmente, entre o arquiteto/pesquisador e o contratante/poder público, em virtude das diferenças de entendimento e abordagem, que se interpuseram na reconstrução de um espaço urbano em que, por lei, era obrigatório o envolvimento ou a participação do usuário para validar o próprio empréstimo. Entre essas diferenças estava a divergente concepção do que seria qualidade para a população, a que estariam destinadas os investimentos, constituídas de famílias de poucos recursos. Também apresenta uma síntese metodológica no aprimoramento para a elaboração de projetos e obras de urbanização de favelas, atendendo não apenas a administração pública como também a população que recebe o investimento tendo como desafio a dimensão de uma educação não-formal, potencializando uma maneira ativa de participação popular que aponta, partir da manifestação do coletivo, para uma qualidade de cidadania, que institui o cidadão como criador de direitos para abrir novos espaços, capaz de influenciar políticas públicas. / This masters degree dissertation addresses some issues regarding participation, such as education and citizenship strategies, in achieving public areas in their physical-political and qualitative transformation in the environment management. The dissertation is refering to the analysis of experiences in sub-normal settlements where the architect/researcher strived to plan, develop, and execute projects from the perspective of those receiving the investments, although Public Power contracted their jobs, by understanding that participating is being able to make decisions in some process that will change, either spontaneously or not, the destiny of a given situation, targeting a tomorrow which should be improved as of today. Thus, social individuals need to gather worthy information and stimulate discussions within a multiple environment that is diversified in away to perceive and cope with actually relevant issues of the scenario. Resulting from discussions, creative solutions may start to come up in the decision-making process that better meet the needs and wishes of the target population. Many conflicts ensued between the architect/researcher and the contracting party, Public Power, because of the differences of understanding and approach that interfered in the rebuilding of an urban area where the involvement or participation of users was mandatory by law to validate the loan itself. Among these differences, there was the divergent conception of what should be considered as quality for the population for whom investments were designated and what was constituted of low-income families. Also, what it is presents a methodological synthesis to improve project design and urbanization construction works in squatter settlements - favelas - by responding not only to public administration, but also to the population receiving the investment. The challenges include: the dimension of an informal education, and the empowerment of an active manner of popular participation that points to, from the populations manifestations, a citizenship quality, one which institutes the citizen as a rights designer to open new areas, enabled to influence public policies.

Esta tese funde a princípios de preservação revisados a ideia de transformação social que possa se dar de forma legítima e sólida, tanto para moradores de habitações sociais ou em situação de rua como para toda a sociedade. É lançado outro olhar sobre a teoria e a prática do exercício intencional sobre as permanências e transformações; não aquele das cartas de conservação do patrimônio histórico – sob a égide do desenvolvimento patriarcal e do domínio mercantil –, mas um que se amplia até a área da rearquitetura social, o fazer arquitetura sobre a arquitetura social preexistente; nesse caso, contribuindo para as transformações de uma realidade homogeneizante, de segregação e subjugo. Um olhar que vê a preservação como algo natural, não imposto, característica de uma sociedade multicultural, com equilíbrio e justiça entre os homens e entre o sujeito e a coletividade, que parte do princípio de que a necessidade de pertencer e se individualizar é inerente a todos os sujeitos e que o preservar deve ajudar a manter a participação de todos no caráter da sociedade, representando as diversas identidades e suas expressões. Destaca-se, nesse processo, que a identidade da repetição e da diferença é aspecto fundamental para o preservar, e que essa ação se estabelece na interdependência da permanência com a transformação, dentro de uma lógica complexa e diversa de uma estrutura caleidoscópica multidirecional de relações humanas. Para essa construção são revisados e analisados conceitos como o de patrimônio, patrimônio histórico, monumento e monumento histórico, e trabalhado o mal do arquivo, da acumulação e do progresso, estabelecendo-se ainda uma aproximação às concepções da Nova Museologia. Essa obra, além do desenvolvimento teórico, se constrói na observação e reflexão de ambientes e eventos concretos, cotidianos, ilustrados por exemplos estudados e experienciados. Alguns desses exemplos já representam a contestação de um modelo que não atende as demandas sociais contemporâneas. / This thesis merges to revised principles of preservation the idea of social transformation, which can take place in a legitimate and solid way, both for residents of public housing or for the homeless population and the whole society. We look at the theory and practice of intentional exercise on the permanencies and transformations from under a different perspective. Not the one of the letters of historical patrimony conservation, under the aegis of patriarchal development and mercantile area, but one that extends to the area of social rearchitecture; the making of architecture over the existing social architecture, in this case, contributing to transform a homogenizing reality of segregation and subjugation. Our perspective sees preservation as something natural, not forced, characteristic of a multicultural society, with balance and justice among men and between the subject and the community, and which assumes that the need to belong and to individualize is inherent to all subjects, and that preserving should help keep the participation of all in the character of society, representing the diverse identities and expressions. It is noteworthy, in this process, that the identity of repetition and difference is a fundamental aspect to preserve, and that this action is established in the interdependence of permanence and transformation, within a diverse and complex logical structure of multidirectional kaleidoscopic human relations. For this purpose the concepts of patrimony, historical patrimony, monuments and historic monument are reviewed and analyzed, and the evil file, of accumulation and progress, is addressed, establishing an approximation to the conceptions of New Museology. This work, in addition to the theoretical development, builds itself on the observation and reflection of environments and concrete everyday events, studied and illustrated by experienced examples. Some of these examples already represent a challenge to a model that does not meet the contemporary social demands.
