Perspectiva e alteridade : visões sobre arte, loucura e antropologia

Testa, Federico Leonardo Duarte January 2013 (has links)
This thesis intends to undertake an exercise of perspective between the fields of art and madness. Focusing on what is heterogeneous, stranger, other respect to ourselves and our culture, it puts forward the question about what can madness reveal about art and the history of art, and what can art tell us about madness. This thesis also asks about the potential of anthropology on relating to both art and madness: how can ethnography and an anthropological attitude constitute themselves as a paradigm to art criticism and to the theory of art? Departing from the ethnographic immersion into a universe of reclusion where art and madness meet – the creativity workshop of a psychiatric hospital -, this dissertation investigates the potentialities of anthropology and ethnography in face of madness, its works and processes. An “ethnographic turn” in contemporary art is, then, discussed, as well as an “ethnographic turn”, yet to accomplish, in art criticism, figuring it as intensive experience, immersion and process of creation. How to transform these experiences into a paradigm not just to think the arts of the others (“outsider arts”), but also to think other kinds of art, different possibilities and alternative concepts of art? Departing from several different ways by which the quest and the contact with alterity and otherness were made in the visual arts, the thesis approaches the art of the insane. Along this path, different artistic and philosophical references are mobilized such as Surrealism, Jean Dubuffet, Arnulf Rainer, Bispo do Rosário, Michel Foucault, among others. In this exercise, the political aspects regarding the process of exclusion of social actors categorized as mad are never out of sight. The act of writing was assumed as an ethical task before the necessity of remembering the suffering inflicted to the mad by society. The text constantly reiterates the questioning about how to follow the path that connects art and madness without confirming compromises with intolerable and repressive institutions of our culture.

Overshadowing Sight: The Story of Blindness in Twenty-First Century Latin American Narrative and Visual Culture

January 2018 (has links)
abstract: Coming out from under the shadow of sight, blindness has a story to tell. From Tiresias to The Miracle Worker, literary and visual representations of blindness are cornerstones of compelling tales of loss and overcoming. In support of the inherent value of sight, these conventional narratives overshadow the stories and lived experiences of blind people themselves. In light of this misrepresentation, I explore what it means to read, write, and see blindness, as well as consider the implications of being blind in present-day Latin America. I achieve this through a transnational and interdisciplinary analysis of novels, short stories, film, and photography by blind and sighted artists and writers whose work has been published or exhibited after the year 2000. In this context, I will demonstrate how blindness can serve as a lens through which the production and reception of narrative and visual culture can be critically evaluated from a blind person’s perspective. Most importantly, this dissertation showcases the critical and creative work of blind people in order to demystify stereotypes and contextualize anxieties surrounding blindness, perception, and identity. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Spanish 2018

Transformation From Wax to Metal: A Symbolic Interactionism Study of Jewelry Casting Class

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: I conducted this qualitative research including data collection, data analysis and comparison analysis in a Casting and Jewelry Techniques course at Arizona State University for a whole semester. The purpose of this research was to explore the symbolic interactive meaning of metalworking to university students in metal courses, and if they had various learning needs to improve and enhance their metal art making by seeking their responses to the relationship between technical issues and concepts of their own artworks. The study results showed that the meanings of metalworking to students were craftsmanship, and a sense of accomplishment, and it related to their daily lives in career and presentation. Most of them focused on the degree of technical completion and forms of work rather than expressive concepts, and techniques were important in their works. I compared my findings in this study with my pilot study and James's study in a sculpture studio class, and found some similarities in teacher's philosophy and students' metalwork meanings that included career aspirations, some peer interaction, technical concerns rather than concept formation, and process as serious play or the exploration of materials. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Art 2014

O distante proximo, o proximo distante : a elaboração de um espaço imaginario nas paisagens de Guignard / The faraway near, the near far away : elaboration of imaginary space in Guignard's landscapes

Aulicino, Marcos Rodrigues 30 October 2007 (has links)

Processo esse que se desdobra invertendo a direção do olhar, interiorizando os conteúdos e produzindo cenários da intimidade / Abstract: The work analyzes the ¿imaginary landscapes¿ of Alberto da Veiga Guignard, examining their importance from the nineties on, and mainly in the context of his production. The proposal is to understand his works as a whole in their plastic and contextual qualities, dialoguing with the observations of the time and the most recent critic. Thus, the present thesis begins with a panorama of the intellectual context of Rio de Janeiro in the period when Guignard lived in this city (1929-1943), with a circle of writers orbiting around painter Ismael Nery and his influence on part of Guignard¿s production up to 1934, as well as, the theoretical, aesthetic and ideological concepts of the Brazilian Modernist Movement, in the debate of ideas exposed by Mário de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade and Graça Aranha and in the indications of possible plastic and thematic solutions for the visual arts. Then, from the ¿popular portraits¿ of Guignard, this thesis verifies how his production is positioned in relation to the proposal of construction of the ¿brasílica¿ identity, investigating the development of the nationalist ideas of Mário de Andrade and his artistic options as art critic and, mainly, observing his acceptance of the work of Guignard. It is also mentioned, the positioning of the Brazilian critic in the 80s and 90s, which imposed new parameters with the revision of the modernism and tried to contemplate the work of Guignard on basis of new criteria, that were borrowed from models used to demarcate the aesthetic limits of the European and North American vanguards, that when confronted with the painting of Guignard, proved to be inadequate, at least when understood as univocal. The ¿landscapes¿ are, in this way, described as the part of the artist's production where there is the encounter of the mentioned interpretative keys, their plastic solutions along with the aesthetic thought and the ideological tensions. The ¿landscape¿ is the constitution of a theme where there is room for continuity of a national characterization, in an elaboration of specific space approach, inherent to his painting. With the idea of investigating these statements, there is a chapter especially dedicated to the analysis of the plastic content in the development of the landscapes of Guignard, starting from his ¿views¿ and the process of elaboration of his space characteristics: framing, positioning of the spectator from the distance and displacement of the depth in parallel plans. Finally, the research presents the process of imagination of the landscape, base of Guignard¿s poetics: in the crossing of a space approach that tends more and more to the verticalism inside of the pictorial plan and a derived thematic universe of the search for the ¿brasílica¿ identity. A process that unfolds itself inverting the direction of the glance, internalizing the contents and producing sceneries of intimacy / Doutorado / Doutor em Artes

Kant e a crítica de arte / Kant and art criticism

Alice de Carvalho Lino 11 May 2015 (has links)
We affirm in this thesis the coherence and relevance of using Kantian aesthetics in the critique of said modern and contemporary art. In the following chapters, we have evidenced the utility of the Kant´s judgments of taste and the sublime through the criticisms of Greenberg, De Duve, Lyotard and Mario Costa, to consider the fruition of certain works. It has been verified during the research, that changes in some aspects of Kantian concepts have been made in order to better adapt them to the works and twentieth century culture. In any case, by the examples observed in the thesis, Kants contribution is evident in considering the fruition of modern and contemporary art that the judgment of reflection mobilizes our cognitive faculties both when determining enjoyment as well as general knowledge from works of art.

Pelos poros do mundo: uma leitura psicanalítica da poética de Flávia Ribeiro / Through the pores of the world : a psychoanalytic reading of Flávia Ribeiros poetic

Silvana Maria Réa 22 May 2009 (has links)
This paper is the result of field research conducted on plastic artist Flávia Ribeiro and encompasses an extensive period of her career. The aim is to apply a psychoanalytic reading to her poetic, drawing a connective thread through it and thus understanding her production spanning a period of ten years, including different subjects and a broad variety of dimensions and plastic expressions, ranging from painting, drawing and engraving to sculpture. The methodology makes use of open interviews conducted in the artists studio. This material, when transcribed, is approached with the same free floating attention as utilized in psychoanalysis an open ear that divides the artists free association into separate subjects. Concentrating on two fronts: the artists discourse and contact with her work, it is sustained within implied psychoanalysis which, as can be seen in the field of transference, processes the unique manifestations of the works with their reader and inserts the observers unconscious into the observed field as a research tool. Indeed, it is a fact that contemporary reviews of art focus their interest on the legibility of the works and participation in situations proposed by artists. Critics are therefore required to think about their experience and not focus on legitimizing the work or mediating it with the public. As this paper deals with reflections on issues arising during time spent with the artist, rather than with the production of knowledge based on an a priori hypothesis, it can be considered as a review and, as it is a reading that organizes its poetic in snippets which confer new meanings, the paper evolves as a curatorial strategy for Flávia Ribeiros poetic universe.

Cildo Meireles - espaço, modos de usar / Cildo Meireles - Space, ways of using

Diego Moreira Matos 22 May 2014 (has links)
The problem of space both as experience and in the field of knowledge production has been one of the crucial matters of contemporary visual arts. Allowing themselves to be affected by the sphere of life and therefore by several disciplines that directly or indirectly deal with spatiality - such as Philosophy, Physics, Architecture, Geography among other - artists develop their researches aiming at this question, obviously never forgetting the time co-ordinate. In Brazilian context the work of Cildo Meireles - an artist of great importance due to his relevant contribution to national intellectual scene - the investigation of this problem is particularly revealing. He is one of the artists whose work best enables the observation of the nature of space either by its subversion, or his critical perception, or even its proposition. Starting in the second half of the sixties, Cildo Meireles artistic trajectory helped questioning the frontiers of art both in conceptual and experimental ways. While the artist is deeply conscious of his situation (featuring biographical, historical, environmental and political aspects, his practice has always been in the line with the gradual changes of art, fact that is revealed in the official history of recent art. Taking his life\'s work as a reference, our hypothesis is that Cildo Meireles operates an acute investigation about the reasons of space by means of a bifurcated narrative plot (a plot that can be mirrored in his discourse). With obvious political implications, we outline a perspective about his trajectory as in a game of moving back and forth. The central point of his trajectory occurs in the middle seventies. It is from the spatial uncertainties of works such as Eureka/ Blindhotland and Malhas da Liberdade that we define a practice of spatial outburst, later anchored on its chiefly seductive nature. Divided in two main parts, this thesis firstly offers a conceptual frame to define a general perception of a spatial situation where the work of art must operate or be itself that situation. In an endless search for disarming reality and consensus in works that subvert ordinary expectations in relation to space, the artist helps destabilizing some cultural traditions and modern ideologies. It is towards new forms of comprehending space or even proposing it that the artist directs his gaze. It\'s about these developments in his art production that the second part of the thesis will focus on, presenting some installations where the seduction through art asserts itself and takes the individual to a space-time immersion, questioning the certainties of space.

This work has as main goals: 1. describe and discuss transcriptions of traditional Brazilian Tangos for marimba; 2. to make an interpretative study on these pieces. It utilized two pieces, composed in different compositional periods of Ernesto Nazareth: Rayon D'or (1892) and Garoto (1916). The process of transcription and adaptation is contextualized with a brief history of the development and popularization of the marimba, and overview of the importance of the use of transcriptions in the early formation of its own repertoire. In addition to the transcriptions of these tangos is included an interpretive study which deals with both the resolution of technical difficulties and the interpretative decisions about aspects such as control of the timbre, phrasing, choice of sticking, among others / Mestrado / Praticas Interpretativas / Mestre em Música

La littérature sur l’art en Argentine pendant les années soixante : la crise des références étrangères et l’extension de la perspective latino-américaine / Argentine art writing in the sixties : the foreign reference crisis and the extension of Latin- American perspectives / La escritura sobre arte en Argentina en los años sesenta : La crisis de las referencias extranjeras y la expansión de la perspectiva latinoamericana

Gustavino, Berenice 05 December 2014 (has links)
From their beginnings, Argentinian art history and critic have followed European models. Interpretation tools, evaluation criteria upon works of art and the standards to organize and cut into periods the historic account, respect the established norms, especially those given by the French modern art historiography. Argentinian authors believe their local art makes part of the western art world space, yet they understand that it is located at a marginal area and that it belongs to a temporariness sufering from lag in relation to the development of the central modern art’s regions. Terefore, Argentinian art is habitually judged as country-like and out-dated since it fails to tackle the imposed standards of the French canon. Such perception is nourished by the interaction of the Argentinians with the French ulture throughout their travels, the foreign authors’ visits and from their specialized French literature available in Argentina. With few exceptions, this perspective has dominated arts writing since the sixties. From that moment on, Argentine authors increasingly question the French references. Te model is re-visited, criticized, mixed with other perspectives and eventually forsaken. Tese transformations occur within the general frame of the disciplinary revisions of the passing from modern to contemporary era. Tey are not uniformly produced, but the outcome of gradual function, methodology and style of art writing revisions. Te crisis afecting the traditional models leads the specialists to look for new foundations in several areas of knowledge such as psychology, sociology, or in the theoretical systems proposed by structuralism and semiotics. Te « Latin-Americanist » discourses, reactivated during the sixties contribute and give such revision conceptual elements for the development of new perspectives on the art criticism and art history.

Théophile Silvestre (1823-1876) : critique d' art / Théophile Silvestre (1823-1876) : art critic

Penet, Lyne 08 December 2016 (has links)
Since the 1980s, there has been a renewed interest in contemporary historiography for the art criticism of the nineteenth-century. The Second Empire era remains nevertheless little-known. Our thesis is devoted to an art critic of that particular time : Théophile Silvestre (1823-1876). After a biographical approach of his career, our research will focus on his criticism masterpiece, Histoire des artistes vivants. We will attempt to show that, when Silvestre chooses to study the most famous painters and sculptors of his time, it is in order to investigate the legitimacy of their popularity. Confronted to a world he deems sick and deprived of faith, Silvestre is looking for artists that will revive art and life. He thus considers Delacroix, whose powerful imagination transcends reality, as "the greatest artist of the 19th century". After the painter's death, Silvestre focuses his interest on the painters of the Barbizon school who, just like him, disapprove of the emerging new world based on the principles of progress and industry, and whose painting appears as a potential cure against modern society. Being towards the end of his life assigned the writing of the Alfred Bruyas' collection's catalog, Silvestre endeavours to give romanticism a rightful place in history, using museums as a frontline against the decay of modern art. From Histoire des artistes vivants to the Galerie Bruyas' catalog, our thesis shows which memories of his time Silvestre decided to pass on to future generations of historians, and how, by shaping his century like a museum item, already classified and already judged, he made himself the moral guardian of history of art.
