"The War Comes First": Lt. Col. Francis Carroll Grevemberg and the Development of a World War II Antiaircraft Artillery OfficerJanous, Robert 14 May 2010 (has links)
This thesis deals with the life and career and intimate life of Francis Carroll Grevemberg, an antiaircraft World War II officer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Grevemberg joined the Louisiana National Guard in 1932 and began his military career in the midst of the Great Depression. In the reorganization of the U.S. Army before World War II, the War Department transformed Grevemberg's cavalry regiment into a coastal artillery battalion with antiaircraft capability. During World War II, Grevemberg saw continuous action in the North Africa, Italy and Southern France. He regularly wrote letters from battlefields to his wife Dorothy. These letters provide a important window into a young officer's feelings, thoughts and affection in the unfolding of World War II. They are documents of a soldier's emotional release during times of crises. Lt. Col. Grevemberg is a rare, World War II antiaircraft artillery officer who took part and survived five amphibious landings in the Mediterranean.

Mladá - mezi zánikem obce a vznikem vojenského cvičiště (1904-1906) / Mladá - between the Destruction of Village and the Emergence of the Military Training Ground (1904-1906)Šálová, Andrea January 2013 (has links)
1. 4. ABSTRACT Diploma Thesis Mladá - Between the Destrution of Village and the Emergence of Military Training Ground (1904-1906) discusses the turbulent lives of the parish community on Benátky-Region, which, in 1904, was in the very center of planned artillery firing ranges and military training ground of the Austro-Hungarian army. As the only one of the affected villages, Mladá was doomed, people were forced to move, and the local buildings were used to house troops, and, subsequently, they were used as artillery targets. Sacrificing Mladá village in fact brought economic prosperity to the surrounding municipalities. The Transport infrastructure had improved, local trade got new impulses, agriculture production found a new outlet in the army etc. Finally, the dissolution of Mladá village led to the emergence of a new micro-regional center, when a small village of Milovice became a town that still commemorates this historical event village through the name of one of its urban parts - Mladá.

Daniel's Battery: A Narrative History and Socio-Economic Study of the Ninth Texas Field BatteryPerkins, John Drummond 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis combines a traditional narrative history of a Confederate artillery battery with a socio-economic study of its members. A database was constructed using the Compiled Service Records, 1860 census, and county tax rolls. The information revealed similarities between the unit's members and their home area. Captain James M. Daniel organized the battery in Paris, Texas and it entered Confederate service in January 1862. The battery served in Walker's Texas Division. It was part of a reserve force at the Battle of Milliken's Bend and was involved in the battles of Bayou Bourbeau, Mansfield, and Pleasant Hill. The battery also shelled Union ships on the Mississippi River. Daniel's Battery officially surrendered at Natchitoches, Louisiana, in May 1865.

Commanding texts : knowledge-ordering, identity construction and ethics in 'military manuals' of the Roman EmpireChiritoiu, Daniel Alexandru January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is about ‘military manuals’ produced in the first few centuries of the Roman imperial period. It argues that these texts merit far more attention and appreciation than they have received in the scholarship so far. I will explore areas such as the way in which their authors order and rank Greek and Roman knowledge, engage with ideas about knowledge and power, help construct identity and discuss ethics and behavior. In the first chapter I will determine whether the authors operate within a specific ‘genre’, or ‘genres’, of military writing. Then I will explore how the texts relate to other traditions of technical texts, questions of audience, and finally the issue of their practicality. The second chapter will examine how authors tackle the issue of ‘Greek’ and ‘Roman’ knowledge, categorize, rank and use it for self-promotion. We will see how Roman knowledge is both subverted but also praised, and how Greek knowledge is at the same time placed above Roman knowledge and integrated into a narrative of continuity with it. The third chapter will focus on the use of Greek knowledge in the construction of Roman identity. I will explore how ‘manuals’ play a part in the identity of the Roman Empire, fitting into a picture of unity in diversity, and show how they contribute to Hadrian’s self-presentation. The fourth chapter will examine the ethical component in manuals. I will determine whether there was an ethical code of conduct in battle in the Classical world and whether it was different from general ethical norms. Then, we will examine whether our texts engage in any way with this ‘code’ and whether their individual approaches have anything in common or are fundamentally different.

GRKPBV 90 – Militär nytta kopplat till teknisk tjänstPalmgren, Anton January 2018 (has links)
The study deals with the introduction of a new self-propelled artillery called Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90, GRKPBV 90, linked to technical service. The study takes a military technical approach, as historically, technical service is more than rarely overlooked in military contexts. GRKPBV 90 is based on an idea of a self-propelled battalion battery that was already under development in the 1990s, called Granatkastarpansarbandvagn 90120, but not realized. Previous studies have shown that there may occur problem when introducing technical systems with regard to, for example, technical service. The new technical system GRKPBV 90 that will be introduced into the Armed Forces can be complex and may affect military activity and, in particular, technical service. The military benefit that is central to military activity should be linked to the introduction of a new military technical system and the technical service. Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explore how the introduction of a new technical system, in this case GRKPBV 90, may affect the technical service of a mechanized unit and how it can affect the availability of indirect fire capability. Research question: How does the introduction of GRKPBV 90 affect the technical service of a Swedish mechanized connection? Method: To answer the question posed, the study uses a qualitative method in the form of a case study containing a literature study and interviews. Result: The study shows that the answer to the research question is that the impact of the introduction on the technical service of the mechanized links may be small in terms of structure and education. The reason for this is GRKPBV 90 military suitability, that is, the military utility of the system. However, the technical service may be strained with the fact that more vehicles can involve more mechanics, tool kits and spare parts. All in all, this may affect the technical availability of the GRKPBV 90 and, in turn, the availability of indirect fire capability.

Lone Star under the Rising Sun: Texas's "Lost Battalion," 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery Regiment, During World War IICrager, Kelly Eugene 05 1900 (has links)
In March 1942, the 2nd Battalion, 131st Field Artillery Regiment, 36th Division, surrendered to the Japanese Imperial Army on Java in the Dutch East Indies. Shortly after the surrender, the men of the 2nd Battalion were joined as prisoners-of-war by the sailors and Marines who survived the sinking of the heavy cruiser USS Houston. From March 1942 until the end of World War II, these men lived in various Japanese prison camps throughout the Dutch East Indies, Southeast Asia, and in the Japanese home islands. Forced to labor for their captors for the duration of the conflict, they performed extremely difficult tasks, including working in industrial plants and mining coal in Japan, and most notably, constructing the infamous Burma-Thailand Death Railway. During their three-and-one-half years of captivity, these prisoners experienced brutality at the hands of the Japanese. Enduring prolonged malnutrition and extreme overwork, they suffered from numerous tropical and dietary diseases while receiving almost no medical care. Each day, these men lived in fear of being beaten and tortured, and for months at a time they witnessed the agonizing deaths of their friends and countrymen. In spite of the conditions they faced, most survived to return to the United States at war's end. This study examines the experiences of these former prisoners from 1940 to 1945 and attempts to explain how they survived.

Sweden’s increased international commitment has altered the forms andenvironments of today's battlefield and military operations for units within theSwedish Armed Forces. First and foremost it means that all units have to be able tohandle all levels of conflict in most types of environments, including urban terrain. As a consequence of this, new needs and requirements arise concerning indirect fireand Artillery precision strike capabilities. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate if and to what extent a course correctingfuse contributes to an increased tactical efficiency within the areas of effect, cost, logistics and reduced risk of collateral damage. The investigation is made through acomparative literature study with supplementary expert interviews. With the help of a course correcting fuse, which allows for close precision capability,a series of achievements can be acquired. Examples of such achievements are reduced dispersion and increased capability ofdimensioning of effects, reduced risk of collateral damage, lower total cost ofmunitions and reduced demand of logistics.

This dissertation has investigated how a light infantry force has used combined arms during an amphibious operation, specific factors related to the operations character affecting the possibility to develop combined arms have also been highlighted. The case chosen for the study was Parachute Regiments actions during the three battles of Darwin – Goose Green, Mount Longdon and Wireless Ridge during the Falklands War. As a analytical tool Robert Leonhard’s theory about the three principles of combined arms was used together with indicators borrowed from the theory about the warfighting functions purposes of fires. Two of the battles were found to be only partially characterized by Leonhard’s first two principles, complementary systems and dilemmas. The third principle about favorable terrain was neglected. The third battle was throughout characterized by the first two principles and to a larger extent than the former by the third principle. The dissertation concludes that light infantry can use combined arms during amphibious operations. The battles studied were, however, often characterized by unfavorable disposition of the force which affected the possibilities to use combined arms. Leonhard´s third principle was usually neglected. The most important amphibious aspects affecting the possibilities to combined arms were found to be naval gunfire support, light field artillery and the scarcity of light all-terrain vehicles.
