Drawing the divide : the nature of Athenian identity as reflected in the depiction of the „other‟ in Attic red-figure vase painting in the fifth century BCE

Moodie, Meg R. 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: During the fifth century BCE there were three defining periods in Athenian history that challenged its society: the Persian Wars (490 – 479 BCE); Periclean Athens (mid-fifth century); and the Peloponnesian War (431 – 404 BCE). As the development of identity is a reactionary process, these three periods had a profound effect on the Athenian identity and led to the redefinition of this self-image along the primordialist models. Two premises are combined in this study. Firstly that comparisons to contrary ethnicities are vital to the development of identity, and secondly that the visual articulation of an identity is essential to the reinforcement and maintenance of this self-image. This can be applied to the development of Athenian identity during the fifth century BCE as reflected in Attic vase painting. Through a study of the "other" imagery produced in this century, with special attention given to Amazons, it is possible to see the development and nature of the Athenian identity during each of the three periods.

The court of Heliaia : justice and Politics in Athens from the sixth to the fourth century B.C.

Bartzoka, Alexandra 20 June 2014 (has links)
The court of Heliaia is not only one of the most important institutions of Athenian democracy, but also reflects the structure of the democratic constitution of Athens in the fifth and fourth centuries. However, the fact that several sources attribute its origins to the reforms of Solon and the establishment of a timocratic constitution questions its explicit democratic and popular character. The issue is particularly interesting, given that each year six thousand non-professional Athenians are allotted and form the People’s Court. This fact implies that Heliaia is of prominent political significance, especially since the late fifth century. The importance of the judicial activity in the political life of Athenians, as well as its notable increase during the fourth century, were such that we often have the impression that the political conflicts occur not only in the Assembly but also in the People’s Court. Motivated from these issues, we first search for the period of the establishment of the institution of Heliaia and its historical context. Additionally, we aim to clarify its political character from the perspective of its function and trials, as well as from the perspective of its role in the political life of Athens. Indeed, the study of the literary and epigraphic sources allows us to conclude that, beyond the primary role of the Assembly of the People in the political decisions, there is another institution of popular composition involved in the political organization of the city, which is directly linked to the development of Athenian democracy.

Ἀνδρεία, Τόλμα, Θράσος - Male and Female Courage in Classical Greek Literature

Nyholm, Andrea January 2022 (has links)
This thesis discusses the differences in the descriptions of and the attitudes towards female courage in the literature of the Classical period. Male authors of this period wrote extensively of the martial and virtuous courage of men, andreíā, yet in some instances labelled courage instead as tólma or thrásos. Tólma and thrásos are even more commonly used in descriptions of female courage, audacity or rashness. How these three words could be used in relation to men and women is discussed, and the fundamental belief of the Classical period that women were not capable of courage is encountered. As courage was outside the nature, phúsis, of a woman, her actions were always more likely to be viewed as tólma or thrásos. To what extent the literature of the period can reflect the lived experience of the ancient Athenian is unknown. However, it is concluded that literary works both impact and are impacted by social and cultural values, such as the view that women should not or could not be courageous.

Byzantium and the Bosporus : regionality, identity, institutions

Russell, T. J. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis presents a historical study of the relationship between the city of ancient Byzantium and the Thracian Bosporus. Structured around the themes of regional particularity and identity, it shows that local studies can be used to gain fresh insights into more general topics. Viewed through the lens of the relationship between strait and city, the history of the Bosporus sheds light on the nature of economic exploitation and ancient imperialism, and on the nature of ancient communities’ local identities. Chapter 1 explores regionally specific geographical features in the strait, which directed and determined responses to life in the area, around which the regional economy revolved, and in response to which the identities of the local communities were created. Chapters 2 and 3 examine the history of economic exploitation of the region, exploring the attitude of the Athenian Empire toward the Bosporus, and the attempt by the local communities of the Bosporus to create a controlled monetary system in the third century BC. These efforts to exploit local opportunities and commodities, I show, transformed the Bosporus into an attractive economic resource. Chapter 4 examines the local fishing industries of the strait, and demonstrates that the extraordinary availability of fish in the region provoked responses which could not be emulated precisely elsewhere. The thesis also shows that the cultural identity of a Greek city could be intensely local. Byzantium, a Greek colony typically characterized by its relationship to its mother-city, had a series of important local identities, explored in chapter 1. From this perspective, chapter 5 re-examines the difficult relationship between Greeks and Thracians in the region, and chapter 6 questions the validity of the traditional view of the relationship between a colony and its mother-city.

Bertacchi, Maria Pia 18 March 2013 (has links)
The purpose of my research is the myth of Danaïdes, women in the first wedding night have killed their husbands, son of Aegyptus. Why Danaïdes are murderers?According to the Argive mythology Danaïdes have killed their husbands for dynastic reasons, but Aeschylus Suppliant’s show that they have killed to escape the excesses and violence of their suitors. I have already studied this myth to race my first doctorate at the University of Urbino. Gold, with the University of Trento and Lille I want to pursue, based on testimony Aristophane, who wrote a comedy entitled Danaïdes to follow the tragedy Theodectes’s Lyncée, author lived in the fourth century BC. evidence they are fragmentary: we have only a few lines to Aristophane, the only summary for Theodectes. All this shows the great vitality of this myth, but the direct tradition makes us get too little! Other times, the Danaids became the subject of a proverb related to water. This aspect is very keen in the kind of parémiographie where the heroines are in hell: they're going to spill the water in a jar pierced with a small strainer, to demonstrate the futility of their travail. How the heroines are they finished in hell? Greek literary text which told this story? No evidence in respect of, but we know that the Greek proverbs often have a literary diversion. Τherefore is it possible that she was either lost the source for this story room? Μy research should investigate whether such a popular proverb or literary origin. We will say that there is another series of proverbs related to this myth Danaïdes, especially that tell the plight of Egyptian and are very ancient. In the first half of the fifth century they already have their canonical formulation, demonstration of their antiquity. Αἰγύπτου γάμος and Λέρνη κακῶν are, with respect, meaningful: the Greek, in utter such proverbs, want to denote evils and misfortunes endless.

C. / The Athenian Fragments of Simonides: A Study of the Epigraphical Sources before 480 BC.

Pires, Robert Brose 11 February 2008 (has links)
The origins of Athenian democracy are herein surveyed through the analysis of four Simonidean epigrams and the canvassing of several others. Starting from the murder of Hipparchus by Harmodius and Aristogeiton, and following its consequences, both mythic and political, we shall proceed to demonstrate how the people, now identified with the same democratic ideal, was able to eschew both the danger of helotization by Sparta and submission by the Persian Empire by its winning two decisive battles recorded in inscriptions that came down to us either through literary or epigraphical transmission or both. We shall also deal with all aspects surrounding the composition, nature and transmission of each of the four epigrams, besides providing a translation of all other epigrams - including the newly discovered elegiac fragments - that may bear any relevancy to the subject under appreciation.
