Efeitos da suplementação de HMB-AL e HMB-Ca sobre as respostas de força e hipertrofia musculares em indivíduos treinados submetidos a treinamento de força / Effects of beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate free acid and calcium supplementation on muscle mass and strength responses in resistance-trained men undergoing resistance training

Inúmeras estratégias que promovam aumento de força e hipertrofia musculares vêm sendo estudadas, com destaque para a suplementação de HMB (beta-hidroxi-beta-metilbutirato). Ainda que possua literatura controversa na área, um grupo de pesquisadores publicou nos últimos anos dois estudos com desenho experimental semelhante (randomizado, duplo-cego, controlado por placebo) em que sujeitos previamente treinados em força eram submetidos a doze semanas de treinamento de força suplementando com HMB-AL ou placebo. Após período de treinamento associado à suplementação, o grupo HMB apresentou ganhos expressivos de força e massa muscular. Parte das explicações para resposta de tamanha magnitude é o tipo de suplemento utilizado, nesse caso, HMB em forma de ácido livre (HMB-AL) e não em forma de sal de Cálcio (HMB-Ca), utilizado na maioria dos estudos. Por conta disso, o objetivo do projeto foi comparar as respostas de força e hipertrofia musculares de sujeitos treinados suplementados com HMB-AL, HMB-Ca ou placebo submetidos a um programa de treinamento de força. 45 sujeitos treinados em força fizeram parte do estudo, eles foram randomizados em 3 grupos: grupo que tomou 3g HMB-AL, 3g de HMB-Ca e 3g placebo. Todos foram submetidos a um programa de treinamento de 12 semanas, onde eram realizadas 2 sessões por semana. O período de suplementação correspondeu às 12 semanas de treino. Antes e após intervenção, os atletas foram submetidos a testes de força dinâmica máxima, contração voluntária máxima, composição corporal (DXA) e área de secção transversa (ultrassom). O grupo suplementado com HMB-AL teve uma tendência a otimização de ganhos em massa muscular, quando comparado ao grupo HMB-Ca (p=0,09). Quando comparado ao grupo placebo, esse valor atingiu significância (p=0,03), ou seja, o suplemento foi capaz de otimizar o ganho de massa magra em indivíduos treinados. Adicionalmente, o grupo HMB-AL também aumentou mais a carga total de treino, no exercício leg press, quando comparado ao grupo HMB-Ca (p=0,02) e placebo (p=0,03). Todos os grupos ganharam força no exercício de supino de forma similar e o aumento da contração voluntária máxima, também foi similar entre os grupos, não tendo efeito adicional do suplemento. Possivelmente, o HMB-AL tenha algum efeito positivo em otimizar as respostas de hipertrofia e força muscular, ainda que marginal, em indivíduos treinados em força, submetidos a 12 semanas de treino de força / Strength and muscle gain are common goals among healthy individuals and athletes who perform resistance training. A vast number of strategies have been studied in order to improve those characteristics, including HMB supplementation (beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate). Although it has controversial literature in the area, recently, a group of researchers published two studies with similar experimental design (randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled) in which subjects previously resistance-trained were submitted to twelve weeks of resistance training either supplementing with HMB-FA or placebo. After training period associated with supplementation, HMB group showed significant strength gains and muscle mass improvement. This response could be explained by the type of supplement used: free acid HMB (HMB-FA) not the commom form of HMB used in most of the studies (Calcium salt HMB or HMB-Ca). Regarding, the aim of the study is to compare muscle strength and hypertrophy responses of trained subjects supplemented with HMB-FA, HMB-Ca or placebo after a resistance training program of 12 weeks. 45 resistance-trained men took part of the study, they were randomized into 3 groups: group that took 3g HMB-FA, 3g of HMB-Ca or 3g of placebo. All individuals were submitted to a 12-week training program, where 2 sessions per week were held. The supplementation period corresponded to the 12 weeks of training. Before and after intervention, the athletes were submitted to tests of maximum dynamic force, maximum voluntary contraction, body composition (DXA) and cross-sectional area (ultrasound). The HMB-FA group tended to optimize gains in muscle mass when compared to the HMB-Ca group (p = 0.09). When compared to the placebo group, this value reached significance (p = 0.03). In addition, the HMB-FA group also increased the total training load in the leg press exercise when compared to the HMB-Ca group (p = 0.02) and placebo (p = 0.03). All groups gained similar strength in bench press exercise and increased maximal voluntary contraction was also similar between groups, with no additional effect of supplementation. Possibly, HMB-FA has some positive effect on optimizing hypertrophy and muscle strength, in resistance-trained men individuals undergoing 12 weeks of resistance training

Football Crowd Behavioral Responses to a University Marching Band’s Musical Prompts

Decades of market research have investigated how music can influence consumer purchase, food consumption, and alcoholic drinking. Before market researchers declared music an influencer of atmospheric perception, sociologists discovered the sway of music on crowd collective action in sporting events, political rallies, and societal unrest. There remains a lack of research on how live music may influence football fan behavior during a game. Therefore, this study observed the number of behavioral responses from university students elicited by a university marching band’s music prompts (N = 11) at an American university football game. By recording observations of behavior in the student section during home football games, this investigation found that from the total number of music prompts observed (n =202), 50% (n =100) of the music prompts elicited a behavioral response from the student section.

Efeitos do treinamento proprioceptivo sobre o controle neurofuncional e a incidência de lesões e de entorses de tornozelo em esgrimistas : um ensaio clínico

Introdução: A esgrima é um esporte de agilidade, com maior incidência de lesões em membros inferiores, sendo a entorse de tornozelo a mais prevalente. A prevenção de lesões é muito importante para melhorar o desempenho e diminuir o tempo de afastamento dos atletas. Programas de treinamento proprioceptivo podem ser acrescentados aos treinamentos dos atletas, visto que além da fácil aplicação e do baixo custo, a propriocepção tem a função de estabilizar a articulação do tornozelo, prevenindo lesões. Objetivo: Verificar a influência de um programa de treinamento proprioceptivo de 12 semanas sobre o controle neurofuncional e a incidência de lesões em atletas de esgrima. Materiais e Métodos: O estudo foi um ensaio clínico randomizado, com atletas de esgrima, de 14 a 35 anos, de um clube poliesportivo de Porto Alegre/RS, e desenvolvido em seis etapas: familiarização, pré intervenção, intervenção, pós intervenção, follow up de três e seis meses. Na primeira etapa foi feita a familiarização com o teste de força e o registro das lesões ocorridas no ano anterior. Na etapa pré intervenção foi avaliada a instabilidade funcional por meio do Cumberland Ankle Instability Tools (CAIT); força muscular de inversores, eversores, dorsiflexores e plantiflexores do tornozelo através do dinamômetro isocinético; o tempo de reação dos mesmos músculos durante o Lunge Test; o controle neuromuscular durante a Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) e o desempenho no Drop Vertical Jump Test (DVJT). Na intervenção os atletas realizaram o treinamento proprioceptivo durante 12 semanas, três vezes por semana, com duração de 30 minutos. No pós intervenção, no follow up de três e seis meses foram realizados os mesmos testes do pré intervenção e o registro da incidência das lesões ocorridas nesses intervalos de tempo. Para análise estatística, os dados foram apresentados em média e erro padrão, submetidos ao teste de Equações de Estimativas Generalizadas com post hoc de Bonferroni. O nível de significância foi de 0,05. Resultados: Em relação à instabilidade funcional de tornozelo, o CAIT demonstrou que os atletas tinham instabilidade no momento pré intervenção e a mesma permaneceu ao longo dos quatro momentos de avaliação nos dois grupos. A força muscular de inversores e plantiflexores diminuiu significativamente, a de eversores não diferiu e a de dorsiflexores aumentou significativamente na perna da frente do grupo intervenção (GI). No grupo controle (GC) houve diminuição significativa da força de todos os músculos avaliados na perna da frente e de trás. Na perna de trás do GI apenas a força de inversores teve alterações, com diminuição significativa. A razão convencional de eversores/inversores e dorsiflexores/plantiflexores aumentou significativamente na perna da frente do GI e não diferiu na perna de trás desse grupo, enquanto que no GC houve diminuição significativa da razão de dorsiflexores/plantiflexores na perna da frente. A razão funcional de eversores/inversores aumentou significativamente na perna da frente dos dois grupos. A razão funcional de eversores/inversores da perna de trás, assim como de dorsiflexores/plantiflexores das duas pernas, não diferiu nos dois grupos. O tempo de reação do tibial anterior não diferiu em nenhum dos grupos e em nenhuma das pernas, o do tibial posterior aumentou na perna da frente do GI e do fibular longo e do gastrocnêmio lateral diminuiu significativamente nos dois grupos. A distância alcançada na SEBT aumentou significativamente em todas as oito direções avaliadas nas duas pernas do GI e em algumas direções do GC. O desempenho nos saltos diminui significativamente no DVJT de 40cm e 50cm no GI e no DVJT de 30cm e 50cm no GC. A incidência de lesões diminuiu no GI do momento pré para o pós e aumentou no GC nesse mesmo período. Conclusão: O programa de treinamento proprioceptivo foi capaz de melhorar a força muscular dos dorsiflexores e o controle neuromuscular dinâmico, além de diminuir a incidência de lesões em atletas da esgrima, sem interferências nas demais variáveis. / Introduction: Fencing is a sport of agility, with a higher incidence of lower limb injuries, with ankle sprain being the most prevalent. Injury prevention is very important to improve performance and decrease the withdrawal time of athletes. Proprioceptive training programs can be added to the training of athletes, since in addition to easy application and low cost, proprioception has the function of stabilizing the ankle joint, preventing injuries. Objective: To verify the influence of a 12-week proprioceptive training program on neurofunctional control and the incidence of injuries in fencing athletes. Material and Methods: The study was a randomized clinical trial of 14 to 35 year old fencing athletes from a multi-sport club in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and developed in six stages: familiarization, pre intervention, intervention, post intervention, follow up three and six months. In the first stage the familiarization with the force test and the registry of the injuries occurred in the previous year was made. In the pre intervention stage, functional instability was evaluated through the Cumberland Ankle Instability Tools (CAIT), the muscular strength of the ankle inverters, eversors, dorsiflexors and plantiflexors through the isokinetic dynamometer was evaluated; the reaction time of the same muscles during the Lunge Test; the neuromuscular control during the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and the performance in the Drop Vertical Jump Test (DVJT). In the intervention, the athletes performed the proprioceptive training for 12 weeks, three times a week, lasting 30 minutes. In the post-intervention, at the follow up of three and six months, the same pre-intervention tests were performed and the incidence of lesions occurred at these time intervals. For statistical analysis, the data were presented in mean and standard error, submitted to the Generalized Estimates Equations test with Bonferroni post hoc. The level of significance was 0,05. Results: Regarding functional ankle instability, the CAIT demonstrated that the athletes had instability at the pre-intervention time and it remained throughout the four evaluation moments in both groups. The muscle strength of inverters and plantiflexors decreased significantly, that of eversors did not differ and that of dorsiflexors increased significantly in the front leg of the intervention group (IG). In the control group (CG) there was a significant decrease in the strength of all the muscles evaluated in the front and back legs. In the back leg of the IG only the inverter force had changes, with significant decrease. The conventional ratio of eversor/inverters and dorsiflexors/plantiflexors increased significantly in the front leg of the IG and did not differ in the hind leg of this group, whereas in CG there was a significant decrease in the ratio of dorsiflexors/plantiflexors in the front leg. The functional ratio of eversor/inverters increased significantly in the front leg of the two groups. The functional ratio of rear leg eversor/inverters, as well as dorsiflexors/plantiflexors of the two legs, did not differ in the two groups. The reaction time of the anterior tibial did not differ in any of the groups, nor in any of the legs, that of the posterior tibial increased in the front leg of the intervention group and the long fibular and lateral gastrocnemius decreased significantly in both groups The distance reached in the SEBT increased significantly in all eight directions evaluated in the two legs of the IG and in some directions of the control group. The performance in the jumps decreases significantly in the DVJT of 40cm and 50cm in the IG and in the DVJT of 30cm and 50cm in the CG. The incidence of lesions decreased in the IG from the pre-post to the post and increased in the CG in the same period. Conclusion: The proprioceptive training program was able to improve the muscular strength of the dorsiflexors and the dynamic neuromuscular control, besides reducing the incidence of injuries in fencing athletes, without interferences in the other variables.

Task structure, dyadic relations, and athlete role in team-sports settings : implications for athletes' self, relational, and collective efficacy beliefs and performances

The performances of athlete pairs correspond to the agency observed in self, relational, and collective efficacy beliefs. A dyadic perspective offers potentially important conceptual and methodological advantages to the investigation of interdependent action. The general purpose of this thesis was to investigate how athletes influence one another in athlete pairs of different (i.e., distinguishable) roles with a specific focus on the efficacy-performance relationship. Chapters 1 and 2 provide the general introduction and review of literature on dyads and efficacy beliefs. Chapters 3-6 include original research. In Chapter 3 relationships among the individual- and dyad-level performances of cheerleading pairs competing at a national-level competition were assessed to provide a measurement tool for dyadic performance settings in which athletes have distinguishable roles. In Chapter 4 person-related sources of variance (in line with the Social Relations Model framework) in athletes’ efficacy beliefs and performances were examined during repeated performance trials of a paired-cheerleading stunt-task with distinguishable roles. The purpose of Chapter 5 was to examine the efficacy-performance predictive chain of an athletic dyad task to extend Feltz’ (1982) efficacy-performance path analysis in an individual sporting context in conjunction with the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model appropriate for dyads with distinguishable roles. The purpose of Chapter 6 was to conduct a replication of the Social Relations Model investigation in Chapter 4 using same-gender distinguishable dyads and extending the framework to four-person cheerleading groups. The final chapter is a summary of the findings with commentary on the findings’ implications, strengths and limitations of the studies, identification of future research directions, and significance of the findings. Overall, the findings in this thesis support that task structure, dyadic relations, and athlete role in a team-task influence how athletes perceive and are perceived relative to self, relational, and collective abilities, with some effects including implications for efficacy-performance predictive relationships.

Hanging in the Balance: Gendered Identity in Elite Sport

abstract: ABSTRACT Elite experience and careers in judged female sports complicate the binary categories of retirement while they are especially exposed to cultures of abuse, pressure and subjectivity. This thesis is comprised of multiple voices and experiences from the elite female athletic perspective, including my autoethnographic narrative. Highlighted and discussed are the topics of sexual assault and abuse, family pressure on children to do and excel at sport, the National Team experience representing the United States and subjected bodies and judging. It is an aim of this thesis to culminate all of those factors in the final chapter and hold that the experience and the cultures of athletic identity within synchronized swimming, gymnastics and figure skating not only cannot be explained by current research on athletic identity through retirement but have the capability to retire undeveloped young women by overdeveloped athletic identities. Through a sampling of voices and experiences across different female judged sports, over three decades, the reader will observe similarities that cause these sports to have a culture of solidarity through the aspects they hold in common with each other. The narrative highlights pivotal moments in the lives of the elite female athlete within these sports, which add to the calculation of their athletic identities and the lack of their personal identities. Through reflection and analyses of not only my story, but the interviewees from my original research and that of Joan Ryan’s as well, I aim to voice a mutual experience of elite athletes. Consisting of multiple factors throughout many years we will see through my autoethnography, paralleling with other voices and experiences, how it all intersects and contributes to this: Who am I now and where do I go from here? / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Social Justice and Human Rights 2019

Scaling Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull Maximum Strength in Division I Athletes: Are We Meeting the Assumptions?

This study examined the validity of various scaling methods, isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP) peak force using various scaling methods, and the relationships between IMTP peak force and countermovement jump height. Fifty-one collegiate baseball and soccer athletes performed two maximal IMTPs. Absolute peak force was compared between teams and when data were scaled using ratio (RS), traditional allometric (ALLOTrad), and fitted allometric (ALLOFit) scaling. ALLOTrad and ALLOFit validity was violated because different derived exponents existed for baseball (b = 0.20) and soccer (b = 1.20). Soccer athletes produced greater RS peak force compared to baseball (p = 0.012), while no difference existed with absolute, ALLOTrad or ALLOFit (all p > 0.05) peak force. Moderate relationships existed between body mass and absolute (r = 0.402, p = 0.003) and RS (r = -0.328, p = 0.019) peak force, while trivial relationships existed with ALLOTrad and ALLOFit (both r < -0.10, p > 0.05). Trivial relationships existed between countermovement jump height and absolute, RS, ALLOTrad, and ALLOFit (all r < 0.20, p > 0.05) peak force. The current dataset violated allometric scaling assumptions, making it inappropriate to use ALLOTrad and ALLOFit scaling. Practitioners must understand the assumptions, limitations, and purpose of scaling methods.
