Utilizing multi-method approach I have outlined normal days of these children. Observation, semi-structure interviews individually and in focus groups and walking tours with twelve street children provided vast knowledge about the geographies of their activities and locational choices. This study illustrates the picture the street children have of their city. The conceptual framework of this study is based on the concepts of child-friendly cities and attachment to place. The results analyzed by using these concepts reveal the extremely challenging situation of street children in the margin of society. Settings for a good and balanced life may be there, but actualization of those settings is trivial. Abuse, violence, drugs, discrimination and misunderstanding frame their everyday life. Possibilities to live a normal life are minimal. In this light child-friendliness of Pelotas is evaluated. Based on the results, I claim that these concepts cannot be directly applied to street children. To be able to improve the livelihoods of these children a key tool is cooperation with them. The projects need to be designed and planned with them, not for them. Collaboration between the children and the mainstream society is needed to get sustainable results.

There’s no place like home: place attachment among the elderly in Greensburg, Kansas

Cartlidge, Matthew R. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Arts / Department of Geography / Jeffrey S. Smith / In a matter of minutes, a small, western Kansas community by the name of Greensburg was over 95% destroyed by a tornado. After the storm, the community’s civic leaders decided to rebuild Green. As a result, the modified cultural landscape no longer resembled the once familiar town that was viewed as a place of attachment by its predominantly elderly population. The purpose of this thesis is to better understand how the May 4th, 2007, tornado affected the elderly’s emotional connection to Greensburg. To identify how the town’s landscape changed I used before and after photographs. In order to more fully comprehend how their attachment to the community has changed, interviews were conducted with several elderly residents who rebuilt in Greensburg, as well as those who moved away. The results suggest that the elderly experienced a significant change in their bond to the town. Typically the elderly did not embrace going Green and focused more on retaining their memories of how the town used to be. Most significant to their development and change in place attachment were the relationships they developed and maintained with fellow community members. Overall, it was the people that made Greensburg home and a place of attachment. When many of them left for good after the tornado, the elderly’s place attachment to Greensburg was forever changed.

Rufato, Fabrício Duim 15 March 2018 (has links)
Submitted by Marilene Donadel (marilene.donadel@unioeste.br) on 2018-06-05T23:45:39Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Fabricio_Rufato_2018.pdf: 1993386 bytes, checksum: 1ee5b8f9c494afe436df9803cf753fc0 (MD5) / Made available in DSpace on 2018-06-05T23:45:39Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Fabricio_Rufato_2018.pdf: 1993386 bytes, checksum: 1ee5b8f9c494afe436df9803cf753fc0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-15 / The environmental relationship in children provides greater welfare in childhood favoring greater human development and quality of life. Thus, this dissertation aimed to analyze if the items of the Place Attachment (PAS), Place Identity (PIS) and Environmental Satisfaction (CESS) in children are predictors of Personal Welfare (PWI-SC). The study included 886 children, and 54.13% girls and 45.87% boys with a mean age of 10.66 years (SD 0.62). Two studies were carried out: first a quantitative study, where as instrument were used the scales of Attachment to Place (PAS) α = 0.78, Place Identity (PIS) α = 0.79, Child Satisfaction (CESS) α = 0.66, α = 0.62 and Personal Well-Being Index-School Children (PWI-SC) α = 0.74. Data were analyzed quantitatively through multiple linear regression (Stepwise Method) and Student's t-Test. The results indicated that the items (environmental satisfaction), I am satisfied with the cleanliness of the school; I am happy when I am in contact with nature; I am satisfied with the separation of the trash (recycling) in my house; I am happy when I spend time with animals; and the items (attachment to the place), I would be very sorry if I had to move to another neighborhood and, I like to live in my neighborhood, are able to explain 25% of personal welfare in children. The average of welfare, attachment to the place and environmental satisfaction were compared by gender, and there was a significant difference only in the connectivity factor for the environmental satisfaction scale. The boys presented higher averages in this construct, which can be explained by the fact that they play more outside the house than the girls, in activities like fishing, activities with the parents, to ride of bicycle, etc. Subsequently, in the second article, a quantitative and qualitative study was carried out. The means of personal well-being by schools were compared through the t-test and Anova, and the results indicated significant differences between schools in the items related to health, safety, relationships with people, and things they have. Finally, the children's perception of the environment in which they live and the concepts of welfare, attachment to place, place identity and environmental satisfaction were analyzed qualitatively through the focal group technique. Four groups of the sixth year, from four schools of the public network of Cascavel-PR, located in the central, intermediate and peripheral regions participated in the research. It was found that children relate the influence of attachment and place identity to well-being, as well as being aware of environmental problems and cited attitudes toward daily actions of environmental intervention. This dissertation has helped to draw attention to the importance of the environment for children, as well as the importance of considering these issues in school, family and public policy, in order to promote a better quality of life for children.

"Bring the Water Back" : En studie om hur en förstärkt platskänsla kan hedra ett kulturarv i en offentlig miljö.

Lucena Wallin, Yasmina January 2023 (has links)
This study is a degree project in Information Design with a focus on Spatial Design. The aim has been to gain an understanding of the residents' relationship to the city of Fuengirola through methods and theories. This with the goal of developing a public environment that leads to an increased sense of place while respecting and informing about a culture that is de-prioritized in favor of fast-growing tourism. The work inspects, from a perspective of Critical Regionalism and Sense of Place, the meaning of an authentic cultural experience and how it can be communicated through a spatial design. Methodical work has been carried out where interviews, photo studies, site analyses and an analysis of these have led to answers regarding which factors the residents of Fuengirola feel most attached to and which aspects have been lost over time. The results concluded that the attachment to place and the place identity that Fuengirola generates are based on interactions, traditions, and social gatherings, where the beach and tourism play a leading role. The sense of place is also strengthened through materials from a former room, as they still have a cultural importance today. The collected empirical evidence in combination with the theories has been the basis for a design proposal. The proposal involves a concept of different passages that reflects the activities and interactions that have characterized a room of the past and the factors that created an attachment to the place among the inhabitants. This degree project only visualizes part of a selected street to give an example of how these streets can potentially benefit an increased sense of place, place identity and connection to place in the city of Fuengirola.
