Mayer, Valéria Neves Kroeff January 2007 (has links)
Nowadays, an attention which is not selective, focal, sustained and voluntary is deemed as inattention. In this context the body hyperkinesis is understood, many times, as a symptom susceptible to medicalization. Is there a direct connection between the body quietude and the ‘be attentive’ state of the subject? In search for answers for this and other questions, a field survey was done where the corporal dynamics of a group of children in the school environment was observed in the first two years out of nine of the Elementary School. The empirical material is constituted of registrations done during the years of 2006 and 2007, through a field registration book, photos, video recordings, a semi-structured interview with parents, educators and children, as well as school documents analysis with the intention to be able to relate the corporal dynamics and the attention functioning of a group of children in different activities. The data analysis was done supported in the theory-methodology perspective proposed by the Rede de Significações – RedSig (2004) and the lacemaker, her cushions, pins, threads and bobbin laces were the metaphors used to describe the methodological route. Therefore, it was in the relation between “surveyor-lacemaker” and her bobbin laces (children, educators, parents and contexts) that this survey took place, or in other words, the threads were made for the braiding of this bobbin lace. The endeavour was to, with the threads found, braid through these bodies/subjects that now are turned into bobbin laces, a lace of relations that make possible a new view about the body and its motricity in the being attentive of a child in different activities. The survey indicated the fact that “attention” is a word with many meanings and also what is understood as attention may be different from what is perceived in the ‘be attentive’ state of the subject. It also proposes the existence of two involuntary manifestations in the body dynamics, that might suggest a state of being attentive to the task or situation which are: the attentional tonus and the synkinesis. Reminding although that these (in)conclusiveness came from the closeness with many subjects in different contexts. Also, what was done here was not a direct correlation between symbol and meaning, because we believe the body language is done in relation with the other.

This research was carried out to study attentiveness in the first-aid given to patients when they arrive at the first-aid reception room of a Public Mental Health Service and its effect on the therapeutic projects of that Service. We started from the hypothesis that the way such a care is given to patients at that first contact may favor assistance in the perspective of the Psychosocial Care which aims at the organization of a substitutive paradigm to replace the psychiatric model or actions which reinforce the prevailing psychiatric paradigm. The study at issue was carried out in the context of a Mental Health program of a Health Service in a county with 30 thousand people, and its first-aid care is called Pronto Atendimento. Two kinds of first-aid care were classified at that Health Service: first-aid care viewed as a bureaucratic promptness and the Attentive first-aid care, a way of attending to patients in accordance with the paradigm of the Psychosocial Care. The data of the research were collected by means of the attentive first-aid care given to a group of patients as they first arrived at the Service, along a two-month training practice while the researcher was on duty at that Service. Participant observation was also made broaching the interaction of such kinds of attentive first-aid care with the Service at issue and its programs, and also with the first-aid personnel team. One also took into consideration data collected by means of research into the Service record and the information provided by patients in interviews focusing on their relation to the treatment they had been given six months after the attentive first-aid care ...(Complete abstract, click electronic access below)

Morin, Laurence 10 1900 (has links)
The transition to parenthood is particularly demanding because of the accumulating changes and increasing demands during this period. When new parents' resources are limited, or their vulnerabilities are too significant to adapt to the increasing stressors, their distress can spill over into their relationship, negatively influencing their relationship satisfaction. Most new parents report a decrease in relationship satisfaction with the arrival of their first child. To address this issue, several authors have investigated the variables influencing relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood. Some point to mindfulness as a potential individual resource associated with greater relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood. This dissertation assessed the dyadic relationship between mindfulness and relationship satisfaction among new parents. The first study examined this relationship at a macro level. Specifically, its purpose was to assess the dyadic links between dispositional mindfulness and relationship satisfaction, and the role of stress as an indirect process in this dyadic relationship. A total of 78 new parent couples (N = 156 participants; M = 6 months postpartum) participated in the study. A mediation analysis was conducted with an actor-partner interdependence mediation model (APIMeM). At the actor level, results revealed that individuals' dispositional mindfulness was negatively related to their stress, which in turn was positively linked to their relational satisfaction. Furthermore, although all associations between the individuals and their partner's variables were in the expected directions, no significant partner effects were found. The results of this initial study expand current knowledge about the indirect dyadic association between dispositional mindfulness and relationship satisfaction during the transition to parenthood by highlighting stress as an indirect process underlying this association. The second study also assessed the dyadic relationship between mindfulness and relationship satisfaction. Yet, it explored this dyadic link using two measures of mindfulness, namely general mindfulness and relational mindfulness. Furthermore, mindfulness was measured daily, and within-person variations in this construct were included in the statistical analyses. A total of 78 couples (N = 156 participants and 1506 observations) participated in this second study. For 14 consecutive days, couples completed daily diaries measuring their general and relational mindfulness and relationship satisfaction. Data were analyzed using a multilevel model with distinguishable partners (i.e., childbearing mother versus partner). Overall, on days when participants reported general and relational mindfulness above their usual level, they also reported greater satisfaction within their romantic relationship. Positive partner effects were also found for both dyad members. Specifically, on days when parents reported having more relational mindfulness than usual, their partners also reported greater satisfaction in their relationship. Our results expand current scientific knowledge by highlighting the central role of within-person variations and relational mindfulness in the positive dyadic link between mindfulness and relationship satisfaction among new parents.

Outcomes of Aggression Replacement Training for U.S. Adolescents in Residential Facilities

Ondrus, Coral Ann 01 January 2016 (has links)
A National Survey indicated that 1.6 million adolescents in the U.S. were arrested in 2010 and 1.5 million in 2011 for erratic aggressive behaviors, thus showing a decline from the 2.18 million adolescent arrests in 2007. Residential facilities in the state of Pennsylvania offer a group intervention called Aggression Replacement Training (ART) to help adjudicated adolescents regain control of erratic behaviors. The purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which level of group participation in ART and certain demographic factors (age, gender, ethnicity, family socioeconomic status, parental involvement, and education) predict decreased aggression and increased anger control among these youth. Cognitive theory and change theory were used to guide this causal-comparative investigation. The overarching research question was, does a youth's level of ART group participation (i.e., attentive, inattentive, and resistant) result in a subsequent reduction in risk assessment as measured by post Aggression Questionnaire score differences. Data were collected for the period of 2011-2014 from archival records from 5 residential facilities (n = 160) in Pennsylvania and were statistically analyzed. Findings from an analysis of variance indicate that ART group participation predict decreased erratic aggressive behaviors and increased anger control among adolescents. Findings from multiple regression analyses indicate that parental involvement predicts attentive participation level, whereas ART group participation, gender, and parental involvement predicted a reduction in risk assessment. Study findings may assist other treatment facilities and affiliated agencies in the U.S. with developing and implementing effective interventions for youth who exhibit erratic aggressive behaviors.
