Coexistence of Conventional and Islamic Banking: The Impact on Growth and TradeHawi, André January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims at understanding the impact of Islamic banking development on economic growth and international trade in countries with a dual banking system. For this purpose we use a sample of twenty countries mainly from the Middle East, North Africa, and Southeast Asia during the time period from 1999 through 2014. We employ commonly used panel data estimators such as Pooled OLS and Fixed Effects, as well as the generalized method of moments (GMM) to address a possible endogeneity of the banking development indicators. Our findings show that on the one hand Islamic banking development in countries with a dual banking system hinders economic growth while on the other hand it boosts international trade. The study further discusses why Islamic banking might actually obstruct growth.

Um exemplo em Alagoas / Financialization of the territory and circuits of the urban economy: loan officers, techniques and banking standards. An example in AlagoasMedeiros, Dhiego Antonio de 11 December 2013 (has links)
The process of diversification of the Brazilian banking topology started in the 1990s with the Real Plan, was anchored in a privatization and denationalization policy of the financial entities which came to a head in 2003, by Resolution no. 3156, issued by the Central Bank of Brazil, allowing the use of corresponding services in the country by any financial institution. On one hand, such a measure was closely linked to the banking policy carried out by the Federal Government (which would make use of the matching network for the distribution of resources to segments of the population that historically lived on the margins of the traditional banking system) in the other, served as a lever to various financial institutions, especially small and medium banks devoid of a network of agencies, met in the corresponding a way to expand its capillarity. In this sense, the provision of banking services with different levels of capital, technology, work and organization express new relations of complementarity between the circuits (upper, upper marginal and lower) of the urban economy, while amending the role played by the bank that was previously solely responsible for the activities of the upper circuit. In this perspective, we sought in the present work, to understand the relationship between the banking system and the circuits of the urban economy in the process of empowerment of the financial sphere in Brazil, taking as an example the state of Alagoas. To do so, it was necessary an evaluation of topologies expressing banking network in Alagoas\' territory, considering the base material, financial products and provision of services. From field research in the counties of Girau Ponciano, Campo Grande and Traipu was possible to identify that the granting of payroll loans is done through new connections between the upper circuit (the bank), the upper marginal (promoters and credit correspondents, who are subcontractors) and the bottom (lower) (the loan officer, who is the guarantee of the profits of a considerable part of banks that sell their products without having a single agency in the state). Thus, was unveiled the intensification of the banking division of labor and dispossession process, centered on the rise of money consumption concomitant with increasing debt. This process denotes the perpetuation of the lower circuit, both as regards consumption as to provide the service itself, in other words, the work realization.

The Danaides\' jar: a study on the debate of the currency in Brazil between the years 1850 to 1866 in key decision-making bodiesSáez, Hernán Enrique Lara 20 June 2013 (has links)
One of the main concerns of this research was to follow and understand the decision-making process surrounding the economic policies that, contrary to what is often claimed, demonstrated a central role in the Brazilian State in the mid-nineteenth century. The analysis of political speeches on the currency and the banking system has been used as tools to help better understand the temporary consensus on economic issues and the political elite of imperial policy. The study revealed that the reversals of direction taken by Brazilian legislators were not only related to structural transformations centered on political parties, which revealed a more complex and dynamic both in the political field and on the economic, than is commonly supposed. By tracking the discussions it appears that projects correctives currency adopted by the political elite were sincere, which means that the economic problems facing the nation\'s representatives used their expertise to find viable solutions to the obstacles that presented themselves, not always being successful the results. So I pointed out that it was also a story of longing and frustrations, and successes, adjustments, but, above all, the transformations of economic concepts that have been refined, political positions and alternate projects gradually adapted.

Previous issue date: 2006-10-26 / The Financial Globalization process has intensified in the last thirty years,
having as its direct outcome a significant increase in the financial securities
volatilities, with serious consequences to the banking systems around the world.
Society s response to these crises has been characterized by a group of
regulatory measures on the basis of the law. However, the managing banking
businesses, as in any other industry, is subject to agency and moral hazard
problems, because, in spite of there having norms to run organizations, the relations
within it are made of people, and their behavior is always exposed to conflicts of
moral and ethics nature.
Bearing this chaos in mind, this assignment provides a historical review of
ethical and moral concepts and applies them to the Brazilian banking system,
intending to investigate evidences on ethical behaviors in the financial operations
management.
It was intended to introduce qualitative ethical concepts and to quantify them
by means of statistical research, in search of potential ethical indicators within the
Entretanto, a
ética do sistema bancário brasileiro

management principles. Its objective overall is to identify the employees and clients
perceptions regarding the individual competencies developed, acquired and applied by
the bank workers during their daily routine. A revision survey of the literature for the
concept of competence is presented as well as a historical report about the banking
institutions and the evolution of the activities of their employees. Two banking agencies
in the city of Resende RJ have been analyzed, one public and the other one private,
aiming at the comparison of the perceptions among the bank workers and with that of
their clients afterwards. As a means to data collection a questionnaire to be responded
by the bank workers and the clients was applied. The results showed to be positive for
the bank workers perception of their individual competencies. However, the clients
perception for the public bank was showed to be otherwise but the clients perception for
the private was showed the same. Essays on the banking sector of Luxembourg / Essais sur le secteur bancaire luxembourgeoisMadani-Beyhurst, Shirin 23 June 2017 (has links)
This dissertation studies the banking sector of Luxembourg under three different angles. It therefore contributes to provide new evidence on an often commented but rarely investigated banking industry. Furthermore, in each of the three chapters, the impacts of the financial crisis are studied. Chapter 1: Bank liquidity creation in Luxembourg. This chapter assesses how much liquidity banks in Luxembourg have created. We find that liquidity creation has more than doubled between 1999 and 2011. However, the level of liquidity created started to decrease in 2009 and in 2011, was still not back to pre-crisis level. Chapter 2: The bank lending channel in Luxembourg. We find an operative bank lending channel in Luxembourg, which works through capitalization on an aggregated basis. Regarding the financial crisis, we underlined that banks preserved the availability of credit.Chapter 3: Bank profitability in Luxembourg in a low interest rate environment. We find that, in the long-run, the level and the slope of the yield curve contribute positively to bank profitability and hence that the current low interest rates have a negative effect on banks’ profits.

Analysis of the management of people in the process of outsourcing of core activities in the financial sector in Cearà / AnÃlise da gestÃo de pessoas nos processos de terceirizaÃÃo de atividades-fim no setor financeiro cearenseMaria AntÃnia do Socorro Rabelo AraÃjo 16 September 2005 (has links)
The present study aims to verify how outsourced (contracted) sale teams are managed by commercial banks which operate in credit on consignation competitive business in Ceara State, in order to assure a continuous, qualified and increasing business tide. First, were done teorethical approaches as âthirdâ and âfourthâ outsourcing, strategic administration, human capital management, financial market and credit on consignation negotiation. After bibliographical review, an exploratory and descriptive field research was done with commercial banks placed in Ceara which operate with lending on consignation product. Were administered four semi-structured quetionnaires to banks managers, banks correspondents, internal collaborators and collectors. After, collected iformations were tabulated and received qualitative and quantitative treatment, detecting that the outsourcing of selling activities by banks are motivated by margin, funding, decentralization of sale points and by operational simplicity, as well as was identified as a disadvantage of this outsourcing process the low managing and technical capacity of its correspondent (contracted). This operational simplicity setting, as well as low managing and technical capacity, roughly contribute towards the fragility of staff employee in third and fourth outsourcing sales team management techniques by contracted companies. We believe that the lack of human resources management practices within outsourcing work endangers strategic results of action of both companies involved on this process.

Um exemplo em Alagoas / Financialization of the territory and circuits of the urban economy: loan officers, techniques and banking standards. / The process of diversification of the Brazilian banking topology started in the 1990s with the Real Plan, was anchored in a privatization and denationalization policy of the financial entities which came to a head in 2003, by Resolution no. 3156, issued by the Central Bank of Brazil, allowing the use of corresponding services in the country by any financial institution.
