Developing a procedure to optimise cycle time in a manufacturing plant / Venter J.PVenter, Johannes Petrus January 2011 (has links)
Productivity advances generated from ‘lean manufacturing’ are self–evident. Plants
that adopt ‘lean’ are more capable of achieving shorter lead times, less waste in the
system and higher quality levels.
The goal of this study was to ascertain which ‘lean’ tools and techniques are
available for use. A matrix was constructed with a summation of the authors who
agree that specific ‘lean’ tools will reduce cycle time.
It was found that reduced set–up time and waste elimination are most affected by the
implementation of ‘lean’ tools and techniques.
An empirical study was conducted to confirm the results of the literature study. The
respondents’ knowledge on the ‘lean’ tools was also tested. It was found that
respondents have a sound understanding of set–up time; they agree that it must be
reduced in the plant. Pre–scientific evidence and the response from the empirical
study confirm that there is a substantial amount of waste in the factory.
A current state value–stream map was drawn from a single welded part Product X.
The value–stream was analysed to reduce the cycle time in the process, with the
focus on set–up time reduction and waste elimination. The future state value–stream
map was drawn, displaying astonishing results.
A continuous improvement (kaizen) programme will help reduce the cycle time even
further by making use of the other ‘lean’ tools discussed in this study. This
programme forms part of the procedure to optimise cycle time. / Thesis (M.B.A.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2012.

Previous issue date: 2018-06-08 / The moment experienced by the public administration reveals its multiple challenges, for the fact
that it is the instrument by which the State responds with efficiency and effectiveness to new issues
arising from the expansion of the role of the State as a service provider, from a greater requeriment
by citizens, and from the increase of complexity of social demands. The way in which public
management fulfills this role includes the assimilation of new tools and instruments for the
diagnosis and solution of problems. From this perspective, this work approached in particular the
transportation sector of a Federal Institution of Higher Education, by means of the formulation of a
method, with a view to the modeling of processes and analysis of bottlenecks in the place. For this,
i have used the process of reasoning from the Theory of Constraints. The enforcement of the
method proposed in the Transport Division demonstrated its viability and practicality, as a tool for
diagnosis and solution of problems, resulting in the formulation of an action plan to be proposed
for the place, indicating the actions necessary to solve the identified bottlenecks .

Flooding from extreme rainfall is already taking place today in Sweden's urban areas. In order tocreate sustainable stormwater management that reduces the risk of flooding, various factorsshould be taken into account such as the choice of method for management. Bottlenecks in thestormwater system mean wells with undersized outlet pipes. A bottleneck area in Bollnäs urbanarea has already caused flooding. The aim of this study is to investigate if there are more similarareas and to contribute to sustainable stormwater management for Helsinge Vatten. Themethods chosen for the study were a literature study and a case study with simulation andcalculations. The literature study was conducted to see how stormwater is handled and what theclimate looks like. The case study was conducted to evaluate the flows that occur during heavyrains. In the case study, a terrain model was first made that showed drainage directions andwater dividers. The calculations in the case study were based on the rational method forcalculating design flow. The climate is changing and as the temperature rises, so does therainfall. The risk of extreme weather increases as the annual average temperature rises and aglobal increase in rainfall intensities has occurred. In Bollnäs, the annual average temperaturehas risen since the measurements began in 1969. In the future, the average temperature can beexpected to rise to 3-5 degrees until the end of the century in Gävleborg. In heavy rain, floodscan occur, they are called pluvial floods and can cause major damage to properties and roads, among other things. There are many methods for developing and making the stormwatersystem more sustainable. Among other things, there is something called blue-greeninfrastructure and this involves green surfaces in the management of stormwater. There, forexample, the water is allowed to infiltrate, evapotranspire or slowly pass on into the system. These solutions also have other benefits, they meet several social needs and can bring ecosystemservices. After the simulation that was carried out, 37 catchment areas could be observed andcalculations for design flow were made based on, among other things, the area in thesecatchment areas. Sustainable stormwater management can be introduced in Bollnäs urban area, when new guidelines and greater cooperation between Helsinge vatten and Bollnäs municipalityare needed. Sustainable stormwater management could reduce the risk of floods in bottlenecks. However, it is not possible to locate any bottlenecks in Bollnäs urban area due to missinginformation about the storm sewers in Bollnäs urban area. More studies would be needed tolocate bottlenecks. Flaskhalsar i dagvattensystemet innebär brunnar medunderdimensionerade utloppsledningar.

How metrics could be used to optimize applications : An automated system for identifying hardware bottlenecksGreenberg, Samuel January 2023 (has links)
System bottlenecks are a common cause of slow performance, arising when system resources are heavily loaded and limit overall system performance. This study investigates the development of an automated self-reporting system that relies on the USE method to identify and report potential bottlenecks to consumers in a user-friendly manner. The aim is to empower users to improve application performance and alleviate companies of customer support responsibilities. Additionally, the study examines the accuracy of the reported bottlenecks to ensure their usefulness. The resulting product analyzes system health over user-defined time intervals and provides human-like descriptions of the potential causes of slow performance. The accuracy of the self-reporting system was found to be approximately 95%. The results showed that it is indeed possible to automate the self-reporting of hardware bottlenecks for consumers, which proved to be accurate. However, it was also noted that this solution was only tested for one category of bottlenecks, and further research should be done before using this in production.

Internationalisation through business ecosystems : What is the value of ecosystems in launching and growing digital firms in Europe?Diehm, Raphael, Siphambili, Ngqabutho January 2023 (has links)
This thesis focus lies on the topic of business ecosystems and their use for digital firms in their internationalisation. The aim is to investigate the value creation and capture process for digital firms through the perspective of business ecosystems. For this endeavour, different concepts such as the born digital theory, key interlinked internationalisation process theories and business ecosystems theory are described throughout the literature review. Other models of previous researchers are used as a foundation to render an own created framework that is more applicable to the scenario and combination of the three aspects this paper investigates. The knowledge gap defined by the authors is about adding new insights on the ecosystem perspective in international businesses by exploring the value creation and capture process of born digitals. Furthermore, it will display the bottlenecks and benefits deriving from a business ecosystem. This leads to the research questions investigating the utilisation of business ecosystems for value creation and capture in internationalisation of digital firms, as well as the bottlenecks and benefits that come with it. For the empirical data collection to receive insights on the research questions and successfully draw conclusions, semi-structured interviews were conducted within the scope of a multiple case study. In addition, secondary data from various authors and experts in the respective research areas were used to bedrock the findings. As the results of the study showed, business ecosystems are greatly appreciated and utilised by digital firms. Moreover, they create value for them and let them strive in many ways, such as focusing on their core business, to succeed and be able to enter new markets. This is only possible with the cooperation of the various actors in the business ecosystem. Nevertheless, there are also severe bottlenecks that have been brought to light that reach beyond what has been present in the literature and considered by other scholars, as well as benefits that keep them competitive. Furthermore, this study provides managerial implications on how to deal with the liability of outsidership and smallness, and for the policy implications, that policymakers should be aware of global and political issues, and their impact on businesses.

The Transcaspian Transport Route – Current Developments and ChallengesElbert, Ralf, Rentschler, Johannes 14 June 2023 (has links)
The article discusses the current state and potential of the Transcaspian Route, a transport route connecting Asia and Europe via Kazakhstan and the Caspian Sea. The route is intended as an alternative to the classic transport corridor through Russia, which became unfeasible due to the consequences of the war in Ukraine. The inductive qualitative research, where eight in-depth interviews with logistics service providers and political stakeholders along the route were conducted, explores four fields of action: Political Framework, Infrastructure, Cooperation, and Technology. The findings will offer guidance to policymakers, investors, and researchers for further developing and improving the usability of the route as a transportation alternative.
