Integrace Explikační metody a Deskriptivní fenomenologicko-psychologické metody na teoretické a aplikační úrovni / Integration of Method of Explication and Descriptive Phenomenological Psychological Method on the Level of Theory and Application

In this thesis, two qualitative methods based on phenomenology are introduced at the theoretical level - the Method of Explication (EM) and the Descriptive Phenomenological-Psychological Method (DFPM). EM assists the researcher in obtaining qualitative data, while DFPM is adapted to process it. The integration of these methods thus seems to be a way to overcome the incompleteness and limitations of solely EM or DFPM application. The next section, therefore, introduces the Attention-Description-Ideation-Application method (ADIA) based on the integration of EM and DFPM. The most important contribution of the new ADIA method is the detailed practical guidance that a researcher can follow to explore their own direct experience with the world - the researcher can become the subject of their own psychological research. The emerging method was used from the outset to examine the author's own experience of basic military training (BMT), leading to a constant review of the theoretical and methodological conclusions about 3PA and to improvements in its structure. Utmaningar på GMU i förhållande till vuxenutbildning : ur ett officersperspektiv / Challenges at Basic Military Training in relation to adult education : from an officer perspective

Den 1 juli 2010 avskaffades värnplikten i förmån för ett yrkesförsvar, varpå premisserna för utbildningen av soldater förändrades. Idag har män och kvinnor från 18 år möjlighet att genomföra s.k. Grundläggande Militär Utbildning (GMU) under tre månader på frivillig basis. De nya premisserna kan m.h.t. frivilligheten ställas i paritet med civil vuxenutbildning, där båda upplever exempelvis avhopp till följd av motivationsbrist. Syftet med studien är delvis att identifiera officerarnas upplevda utmaningar på GMU avseende rekryternas tidigare erfarenheter, motivation samt lärarrollen. Därtill syftar studien till att undersöka om de är desamma för civil vuxenutbildning. Intervjuer av åtta officerare har genomförts för att identifiera de utmaningar som föreligger på GMU, samt en komparativ analys mellan dessa utmaningar och bland annat Knowles andragogikteori, som i den här studien representerar utmaningarna för den civila vuxenutbildningen. Resultatet visar att det föreligger utmaningar på GMU som är desamma för civil vuxenutbildning, särskilt tydligt vad gäller elevens/rekrytens motivation, men å andra sidan visar resultatet på att det föreligger utmaningar på GMU som inte förekommer i samma omfattning som i vuxenutbildning, och vice versa. / In July 2010 Sweden abolished conscription in favor of an all-volunteer military force, whereupon the prerequisites for the recruitment and training of soldiers changed. Today, men and women from the age of 18 can sign up for a so-called Basic Military Training (GMU) for three months on a voluntary basis. The new prerequisites can, with regard to voluntariness, be on par with civilian adult education, both of which are, e.g., experiencing drop-outs as a result of lack of motivation. The purpose of the study is partly to identify the officers’ perceived challenges at GMU regarding recruits earlier experience, motivation and the teacher’s role. In addition, the study aims to examine whether these challenges are the same as for the civilian adult education. Interviews of eight officers have been conducted to distinguish the challenges that exist at GMU, as well as a comparative analysis between these challenges and theory of adult learning, including Knowles’s andragogy model, which in this study represents challenges for the civilian adult education. The result shows that there are challenges at GMU that are the same as for the civilian adult education, particularly evident in terms of the motivation of the pupil/recruit, but on the other hand, the result shows that there are challenges at GMU that do not occur in the same extent as in adult education, and vice versa.

An evaluation of the influence of Basic Military Training on the visual skills of recruits

Most sport coaches are under the impression that if their athletes have 20/20 vision, nothing more is needed to be done in the visual arena. This is a common misconception in youth sport and professional sport. Every sport involves the visual system in one way or another, yet very few coaches or athletes spend any time training the visual system to perform optimally during competition. To perform at the highest level of competition, athletes have to be in tune with their visual motor and visual perceptual system. Participants consisted of 200 male and female recruits enrolled for Basic Military Training (BMT) at the training academy in Ellisras, South Africa. Only recruits who completed the informed consent and adhere to the inclusion exclusion criteria participated in the study. The primary purpose of this study was to see how the recruits improve their visual skills after intense training which included cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength (upper body and abdominal), muscular endurance, speed, power, agility and flexibility. The training intensity of the sessions exceeded 6 metabolic equivalents (METs). Data sampling was completed over a period of one week during weeks 1, 12 and 20. The proposed schedule for the data gathering is suggested to ensure the special requirements demanded by the different tests and to see at what rate their visual skill improve. Results in this study suggests that a Basic Military Training (BMT) programme, focusing on intense physical training, enhances hand-eye co-ordination, visual response speed, accuracy, anticipation, visual concentration and short term visual memory. The improvement of various visual skills observed in this research provides evidence that physical exercise, along with an enhanced state of physical fitness, does have a positive effect on visual proficiency. / Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Physiology / unrestricted

Rekrytering till Försvarsmakten genom Sjövärnskåren : En negligerad rekryteringsbas? / Recruitment to the Swedish Armed Forces by the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps : A neglected basis for recruitment?

År 2010 verkställdes det politiska beslutet om att låta värnplikten vila och satsa på ett anställt försvar och istället infördes frivillig militär utbildning i form av Grundläggande militär utbildning. Regeringen anser att ungdomsverksamheterna, vilka bedrivs av frivilligorganisationer som exempelvis Sjövärnskåren, är en viktig del i rekryteringen till Försvarsmakten. Syftet med uppsatsen är att ta reda på om Sjövärnskåren skapar attraktionskraft för Försvarsmakten och i vilken utsträckning det motiverar ungdomar till att söka vidare till GMU och den nu vilande värnplikten. Denna uppsats baseras på en kvantitativ metod i form av ett frågeformulär, baserat på Herzbergs tvåfaktorsteori samt Hackman och Oldhams modell. Enkäten gick ut till 47 personer med bakgrund i Sjövärnskåren och som påbörjat Grundläggande militär utbildning, Specialistofficersutbildningen eller Officersprogrammet mellan åren 2010 och 2013. Enligt denna undersökning har Sjövärnskåren gjort Försvarsmakten attraktiv för ungdomarna som gått på sommarskolorna. Framförallt har detta skett genom att befälen på sommarskolorna föregått med bra exempel som ledare och representanter för Försvarsmakten. En slutsats som har dragits är att Sjövärnskåren nog kan anses som en bra rekryteringsgrund där det militära livet får testas på och utvärderas, samt leder till motiverade och engagerade rekryter. / In 2010, the political decision was implemented to abolish conscription and build the Swedish Armed Forces on employed soldiers and sailors. Instead of conscription, voluntary military training was introduced in the way of basic military training. The government believes that youth activities, conducted by NGOs such as the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps, are a vital part of recruitment to the Swedish Armed Forces. The purpose of this paper is to find out if the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps can make the Swedish Armed Forces attractive and to what extent it motivates young people to apply for basic military training and the now resting conscription. This paper is founded on a quantitative method in the form of a questionnaire, based on Herzberg’s Motivation-Hygiene theory and Hackman and Oldham’s model. The survey was sent to 47 people with a background in the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps and who began the basic military training, NCO training or Officer training, between 2010 and 2013. According to this survey, the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps made the Swedish ​​Armed Forces attractive to young people who attended the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps’ summer camps. This was, in particular, thanks to the officers at the summer camps, who acted by being good examples of leaders and representatives of the Swedish Armed Forces. One conclusion made is that the Swedish Sea Cadet Corps could be considered as a good recruitment base, where youngsters can try and evaluate military life, which thereafter can lead to motivated and committed recruits.

"They Are More Afraid of Losing Women Than of Having Women" : How the structural transformation of the Swedish Armed Forces has affected the experience for female recruits

When interviewing female conscripts, Emma Lindgren Lauritzon (2012) found that they perceived their basic military training in the Swedish Armed Forces as a negative experience. The women felt that the environment was hostile and that they served on the conditions of men. This is especially alarming since the unequal conscription was replaced by voluntary service for all in 2010, making the Swedish defence dependent on attracting the whole population to fill up its necessary positions. Therefore, this thesis examines how female recruits experience the new basic military training and if the structural transformation, with a more gender equal entrance, has had an impact on the individual level. Eight semi-structured interviews were conducted, designed and presented by a deductive thematic analysis, and later interpreted through feministic and gender organizational theories. The results indicate a positive development in their experiences, and more so – a new development of the women feeling especially wanted and needed. This perceived dependency on women is arguably in the risk of backfiring, generating guilt if they disappoint the organisation. This study gives vital insight to the organisation in question, the Swedish Armed Forces, and also several new and interesting aspects to build future research on regarding women in the military.
