Predation by alien largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides Lacepéde 1802 (Centrarchidae: Perciformes), on indigenous marine fish species in the Kowie System, South Africa

Magoro, Mandla Leon January 2014 (has links)
Estuaries serve as nursery areas for a large number of estuary-associated fish species. Some of these taxa also use river catchments as nursery areas. During the upstream migration of this latter group, the juveniles are prone to predation by native and alien predatory fish inhabiting the system. The rate of invasion of ecosystems by alien organisms can be directly linked to anthropogenic influences, including both intentional and unintentional introductions by alien organisms into new regions. The largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, is a facultative piscivorous fish that has been successfully introduced worldwide for the main purpose of sport fishing. Where introduced, it has been found to negatively impact native fish and invertebrate species through predation, competitive exclusion and displacement of indigenous fish species. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the predatory impact of largemouth bass on the estuary-associated Cape moony Monodactylus falciformis, Cape stumpnose Rhabdosargus holubi and freshwater mullet Myxus capensis in the lower Kowie River of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. A combination of approaches was employed during this study. Stomach contents, stable isotopes and fatty acid analyses were employed for the reconstruction of the diet of largemouth bass. Acoustic telemetry was used to elucidate largemouth bass movements, particularly their ability to enter the upper reaches of the Kowie Estuary. Stomach contents and stable isotopes analyses showed that M. salmoides exhibit an ontogenic shift in diet, with small and medium sized individuals consuming the higher proportion of fish prey, while large sized individuals mostly consumed invertebrates such as crabs (Potamonautes sidneyi) and Odonata larvae, while consuming only a small proportion of estuary-associated fish. Fatty acid analysis only showed a direct connection between the fatty acid profiles of largemouth bass and those of M. capensis and M. falciformis. The acoustic telemetry results indicated that some M. salmoides individuals periodically move into the upper reaches of the estuary following river flood events. The results obtained from all these approaches highlight the risk posed by largemouth bass introductions on indigenous fish species, particularly those that enter the areas occupied by these top predators.

The Study of Battery Electric Vehicle DiffusionConsidering Technology Development Impact : A model based study of Swedish market / En studie om diffusion av batteridrivna elektriska fordon med hänsyn till påverkan av teknisk utveckling : En modellbaserad studie av den svenska marknaden

Xiao, Xiang, Zhang, Wenbin January 2015 (has links)
Battery Electric Vehicle as an environmental friendly transportation alternative has already emerged as well as fade out of the market twice. It has been reintroduced along with the increasing concern about the environment issue. This recent diffusion is surrounded by lots of dynamic changes and uncertainties. However, most current studies focus on political, financial as well as infrastructure factors but neglect factors like the technology especially how people perceived it. Therefore, this study mainly research into how the technology development impact on the diffusion of battery electric vehicle. To achieve this aim, a model based study was conducted targeting Swedish electric vehicle market. In the research, customers are considered to be the target objective because they are the one who perceive the technology and make decision for adoption directly. In order to know the relationship between them, researches have been conducted through qualitative and quantitative approach. Empirical work including interviews and survey were conducted through tripartite aspect to investigate the customer needs and related technology. The investigation indicates the environmentally friendly performance is the key driving force perceived by the early adopters. Meanwhile, range issue, total cost of ownership and safety & technology reliability are identified as the top three critical concerns that hold back customer purchasing decision. A modified classic model for the innovation diffusion has been proposed which is used to evaluate the technology’s perception based on historical data. Two BEV- related technologies were chosen as examples to prove and illustrate the relationship between technology development and electric vehicle diffusion. The results showed that the BEV-related technologies, which have potential ability to address critical customer demand, are able to impact on the customer adoption positively through valid perception by customer. Taking technology development and perception into consideration, the diffusion process should be accelerated to some extent. Technologies which can be more easily perceived tend to have more impact in the diffusion process.

A Suite for Double Bass Transcribed From Pièces à une et à deux Violes, by Marin Marais: A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of J.S. Bach, Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, W.A. Mozart, and Others

Swaim, Daniel 12 1900 (has links)
The music of Marin Marais, a major figure among the French Baroque bass viol composer-performers, is seldom played today. His compositions which are artistically and historically significant, should be available to instrumentalists of this century. Marais published five volumes of bass viol compositions. Seven movements were transcribed from the Second Suite of Marais' first volume. The first chapter is an introduction to Marais; the second chapter pertains to the bass viol and its styles of performance, and the final chapter illustrates the editing required for the transcription. The problems encountered were those of adapting the melodic, harmonic, and contrapuntal styles of the seven-stringed bass viol to the double bass which is normally monophonous. Melodic elements were unchanged, chords were simplified, and contrapuntal lines were retained by giving the second voice to the continuo bass.

Time and duration of spawning by smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieui) in the New River drainage

Graham, Robert J. January 1984 (has links)
The influence of physical parameters on spawning times of smallmouth bass and subsequent growth of young-of-the year was studied via the otolith aqeinq technique. Daily rings on the saqittae of young-of-the-year smallmouth bass were first formed the day of swim-up, and continued to be formed until growth was significantly reduced in the fall. Daily age estimates of young-of-the-year smallmouth bass collected from one unregulated section of the New River, two regulated sections of the New River, and two tributary streams of the New River were used to back-calculate spawning dates. Growth rates of young-of-the-year declined as fish got older. Smallmouth bass spawned early in the spawning season did not initially grow as rapidly as those spawned later. Spawning occurred from late-April through mid-July, 1982, at mean daily water temperatures ranging from 12.5 to 23.5 C. Frequency distributions of spawning dates were nearly identical among study sites, as were hydrological events. A major flood in June separated the spawning season at all study sites into t)lo distinct periods. Discriminant functions were developed from four water temperature variables that differentiated between daily stream conditions prior to the spawning season and daily stream conditions during the spawning season. Mean daily water temperature was the most important of the four variables in differentiating between groups of conditions. / Master of Science

Walking in the Steps of Israel Crosby : En studie av Israel Crosbys basspel samt metoder för att integrera transkriptioner och analys i improviserade basgångar

Sandberg, Jacob January 2024 (has links)
With the purpose of enriching my walking bass lines I have studied the work of Israel Crosby, who is most famously associated with the Ahmad Jamal Trio. His walking bass line- construction hints to his background as a musician from the swing-era, with a foundation in tuba-playing. The 2017 paper “Israel Crosby (1919-1962): An Analysis of His Bass Line Construct” by Gibral Anees Kahn worked as an aid in my attempt to dissect the idiosyncrasies of Crosby in addition to my transcription work, which was focused on memorizing and internalizing, rather than reading the transcriptions as sheet music. By studying three recordings I made several conclusions about Crosby’s habits and methods which I could implement in my own playing. By habitually playing the transcriptions and listening extensively to the music of Ahmad Jamal over the course of 6 months, I engrained parts of Crosby’s playing which was demonstrated in the devoted recital concert, that featured a diverse repertoire. The project resulted in me developing my playing in both conscious and unconscious ways. /
Repertoar:

This Can't Be Love - Richard Rodgers

Out of the Past - Benny Golson

Prelude to a Kiss - Duke Ellington

Bitty Ditty - Thad Jones

I Get a Kick Out of You - Cole Porter

Third Movement - Jeb Patton

Medverkande:

Jacob Sandberg - Bas

Elias Larrsson - Piano

Albin Eklund - Trummor

Tree-Ring Dating of the Karr-Koussevitzky Double Bass: A Case Study in Dendromusicology

Grissino-Mayer, Henri D., DeWeese, Georgina G., Williams, Dustin A. January 2005 (has links)
Sergei Koussevitzky was one of the world’s premier conductors and virtuoso bass players whose favorite instrument was an unusually-shaped bass reportedly made in 1611 by the Amati brothers, Antonio and Girolamo. In 1962, 11 years after Koussevitzky’s death, his widow gave the bass to Gary Karr, currently considered to be the world’s premier double bassist. In 2004, Karr donated the bass to the International Society of Bassists. Close inspection by a team of experts in 2004, however, revealed stylistic inconsistencies that suggested a later construction date. We used four reference tree-ring chronologies developed from treeline species in the European Alpine region to anchor the dates for the tree rings from the double bass absolutely in time. The bass yielded a 317-year long sequence, the longest sequence yet developed from a single musical instrument. Statistical and graphical comparisons revealed that the bass has tree rings that date from 1445 to 1761. Based on the strength of these correlations, the spruce tree harvested to eventually construct the double bass likely came from the treeline Alpine area of western Austria, not too far from Obergurgl at the Italian border. Our results demonstrate that the double bass was not made by the Amati Brothers, but likely by French luthiers in the late 18th Century.

Distribution and feeding interactions of the threadfin shad and juvenile gamefish in Patagonia Lake

Cashman, Michael Robert, 1953- January 1988 (has links)
Distribution, diet, and food availability for young-of-the-year (YOY) largemouth bass (Micropeterus salmoides), YOY bluegill (lepomis macrochirus) and threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense) were studied to reveal any potential interactions in Patagonia Lake, a 170 ha (265 acre) recreational impoundment in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Threadfin shad, a forage species, were stocked to enhance the growth of bass. As shad became abundant, limnetic zooplankton declined, reducing the primary food supply of the YOY game fish. Diet analysis showed very little food overlap between YOY gamefish and threadfin shad. Shad ate phytoplankton when zooplankton became scarce, and continued to grow well and reproduce. As zooplankton decreased, YOY gamefish shifted their diets to aquatic insects. After the shift, the gamefish did not grow well. The continuous overgrazing of zooplankton by large numbers of threadfin shad had an impact on the growth of the juvenile largemouth bass and bluegills. This impact may result in weak year classes in the future.
