Globalizace - sociologická reflexe. Pojetí globalizace u Anthony Giddense, Zygmunta Baumana a Ulricha Becka / Globalization - sociological reflection. Conception of globalization by Anthony Giddens, Zygmunt Bauman and Ulrich Beck.

BIELKOVÁ, Veronika January 2011 (has links)
The diploma thesis called ?Globalization ? sociological reflection. Conception of globalization by Anthony Giddens, Zygmunt Bauman and Ulrich Beck? reflects the question, how sociological thinking deals with the phenomenon of globalization. In the introduction part of the Thesis is a basic outline of sociological perspective on globalization issues and this historical roots. The main part is devoted to comparing the concept of globalization of the three major sociological theorists, Anthony Giddens, Zygmunt Bauman and Ulrich Beck, which includes a detailed analysis of the works related to the theme of globalization. The relevant sections of the Thesis pays attention to the key topics that are discussed in the context of globalization in the field of contemporary social theory (globalization, localization and glocalization, denacionalization, the convergence of global culture, etc.). This Thesis is based on the key works of these authors, their reaction in the scientific community and my own critical analysis.

Feeling Sad? Maybe You are Just Uncertain! A Predictive Test for Depression

Larson, Dana Elizabeth 01 December 2013 (has links)
The current study examined the relationship between depression and uncertainty within the stress-diathesis model. Depression is a mental health disorder that is wide spread within our society. However, few causes of this disease have been able to be identified. Studies in uncertainty have shown that it is a major stressor in day-to-day life. Previous research has shown that individuals with high levels of uncertainty show higher levels of depression. The stress-diathesis model, a model originally developed to explain differences in development of schizophrenia, provides a theoretically meaningful way to combine these two concepts. The model states that a person who is likely to develop a disease has an internal mechanism, a diathesis, that will be triggered upon presentation of a stressor. This study tested the idea that uncertainty can be used as a stressor to activate diathesis within an individual, aiding in the prediction of depression. In total, 163 participants were randomly assigned one of three conditions, an uncertainty threat, an affirmation condition, and a control condition. Participants were given pre and post independent variable measures of depression and anxiety. Findings suggest that uncertainty activated negative emotions differentially within the participants, resulting in higher levels of negative affects after the uncertainty threat, especially for participants who already scored relatively higher on depression indicators. These results hint at a possible understanding of why depression rates and diagnosis rates of mental health issues rise during economic downturn and other times of strong uncertainty.

Deprese a Beckova škála deprese: Normativní studie české verze a srovnání se zahraničními daty / Depression and the Beck Depression Inventory: Normative Study of the Czech Version and Comparison with Foreign Data

Čihařová, Markéta January 2017 (has links)
The thesis is dealing with the topic of depression and measurement instruments, which may contribute to its diagnostics and assessment. Special attention is dedicated to the Beck Depression Inventory, second edition, and the aim of this thesis is to provide normative data acquired from a large sample of healthy adult participants coming from the Czech Republic (N = 450; aged 18 to 96 years). The Beck Depression Inventory, second edition (BDI-II; Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) belongs among the most famous and most often used measures of depression severity. A significant relationship was found between the BDI-II total score and gender and education level, but not age. Women tended to score significantly higher than men on average, and a negative correlation between the BDI-II total score and education was found. Therefore, the normative data were analysed and stratified according to these two demographic variables. Tables, presenting means, standard deviations, percentiles and standard scores are provided for the total unstratified sample as well as for demographically defined subgroups. In addition, internal consistency of the Czech version was high (alpha above .80). The item-total correlations, and factorial structure of the instrument were investigated and the results were compared with results...

Risk Perceptions of Climate Change in International Environmental Negotiations

Dellert, Christine 01 January 2015 (has links)
Climate change poses an unprecedented risk to global human security and future generations. Yet actions to mitigate or adapt to the changing climate system vary greatly among countries and their constituencies. Despite mounting evidence detailing the economic, social, and ecological risks of climate change, many scholars agree that the greatest threats associated with climate change involve delaying or ignoring necessary action. Using theorizing of “risk society” from Ulrich Beck and others, this thesis examines how countries, environmental non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and business interests construct the risk of climate change and how their respective discourses conflict in international environmental negotiations. This research uses computer-assisted qualitative data analysis to explore statements submitted by each of these constituencies to the sixteenth Conference of the Parties (COP) for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2010. Analysis of these texts identifies climate change discourse as crisis or opportunity, in addition to discourses of development, environmentalism, and rights or responsibilities to provide us a better understanding of how we perceive and respond to ecological risk.

Verband tussen depressie en lokus van kontrole jeens skoolwerk by adolessente / The relationship between depression and locus of control towards schoolwork of adolescents

Kruger, Martha Elizabeth. 06 1900 (has links)
The aim of the study was the identification of a possible relation between locus of control towards schoolwork and depression in adolescence. Locus of control - as an aspect of responsibility - and depression, as well as the development of the adolescent are examined in a literature study. As a result of this the feeling that a relationship between the named variables do exist is expressed. A convencience sample- consisting of grade 11 learners - is used in the research. The participants complete a biographic questionnaire, as well as Afrikaans translations of Crandall's Intellectual Achievement Responsibility Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory. The result of the biographic questionnaire, the responsibility questionnaire and the depression inventory are reported on their own before an investigation is done regarding possible simultaneous differences or correlations between locus of control values and depression values. Percentages are used for the report of simultaneous values. No statistical meaningful differences or correlations were found, which might be ascribed to the nature of the sample. Further research is recommended. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. (Voorligting)

The Theatrical Director's Application of the Value Systems Analysis to the Characterization of Roles

Schronk, Janice R. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to determine if the Value Systems (Tribalistic, Egocentric, Absolutistic, Achievist, Sociocentric, and Individualistic) based on the "Levels of Psychological Existence" developed by Clare W. Graves, could be applied to analysis of a role in a play script. Characters in four scripts were analyzed: The -Rainmaker, by N. Richard Nash; The Lark, by Jean Anouilh, adapted by Lillian Hellman; Fiddler on the Roof, book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick; and The Taming off the Shrew, by Shakespeare. The results showed that the system could be applied practically and effectively.

As a result, there is a greater possibility to present mental disorders, the most common is depression. The objective of this project is to verify the effectiveness of two screening tools for the characterization of depression in the oldest-old. This is a quantitative, cross-sectional, observational, and analytical study. The sample size was 74 oldest-old, residents of the city Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. After asking the identification and sociodemographic data the oldest-old answer the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) to identify those depressed or not. Later, they responded the Geriatric Depression Scale 15 (GDS-15) and the Inventory Beck Depression II (BDI-II). From the diagnosis of MINI we calculated the sensitivity and specificity of the BDI-II and GDS-15 for different cutoff points, generating two ROC curves (Receiver Operating Characteristics). GDS-15 showed 100% sensitivity and 83% specificity, being the best cutoff point 6. The BDI-II obtained 100% sensitivity and 87% specificity, with cutoff point 15 indicated for this population. The BDI-II was more accurate than the GDS-15, although the last one presented more appropriated for epidemiologic studies. The two tools were effective for the screening of depressive symptomatology in Oldes- old.

Is national security still national security? : A theory-testing case study of Ulrich Beck's World Risk Society's assumption about the terror risk.

Classon, Josefin January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to test the credibility of Ulrich Becks World risk society theory’s theoretical assumptions about global terrorism's and the terrorist threat’s impact on the nation state’s security policy. To reach an answer a case study with a theory-testing method has been used to test the credibility of the theory. The theory has been tested on the security policy and actions in the US after the 9/11 terror attacks 2001. The thesis can conclude that Ulrich Beck's assumption and hypotheses about the terrorist threat and that it has undermined the traditional forms of security policy and encroached on states opportunities to combat national threats through unilateral acts, have shown different degrees of influence on US security policy since 9/11 2001 up to and including 2016. Overall, Ulrich Beck's WRS theory assumptions that the terrorist threat undermines the nation state's possibilities for individual national security policy can be validated by specific elements but weakened by others.
