This qualitative action research project addressed the infusion of media literacy and new media into a standard secondary English language arts curriculum. In examining students' perceptions of South Africa as they interacted with new media texts in conjunction with the traditional literary text Cry, the Beloved Country, this study also explored the manner in which students' media interactions informed their reading of the novel. As a result of the research data, the author asserts that media literacy education can, in fact, play an effective role in teaching literature within the world literature classroom.

This thesis explores the presence of the movement theories of Irmgard Bartenieff, Peggy Hackney, and Rudolf Von Laban in the following texts: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave. Written by Himself (1845), The History of Mary Prince: A West Indian Slave (1831), Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, Written by Herself, Linda Brent (1861), Sherley Anne Williams’s Dessa Rose (1986) and Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987). The terms and phrases of movement theory will be introduced to the contemporary critical discussion already surrounding the texts, both furthering and challenging existing arguments.

The Rastafari presence in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon

Literary scholars frequently analyze the allusions to Western Christianity apparent in Toni Morrison's novels, but these studies overlook the ways in which some of her novels are informed by a Caribbean presence. This study argues that Rastafari themes, symbols, and ideologies are recurrent in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon. Rastafari is a social movement primarily concerned with restoring the image of Africa to a holy place. Literature as Prophecy: Toni Morrison as Prophetic Writer

From fourteenth century medieval literature to contemporary American and African American literature, researchers have singled out and analyzed writing from every genre that is prophetic in nature, predicting or warning about events, both revolutionary and dire, to come. One twentieth-century American whose work embodies the essence of warning and foretelling through history-laden literature is Toni Morrison. This modern-day literary prophet reinterprets eras gone by through what she calls “re-memory” in order to guide her readers, and her society, to a greater understanding of the consequences of slavery and racism in America and to prompt both races to escape the pernicious effects of this heritage. Several critics have recognized and written about Morrison’s unique style of prophetic prose. These critics, however, have either taken a general cursory analysis of her complete body of works or they are only focused on one of her texts as a site of evidence. Despite the many critical essays and journal articles that have been written about Morrison as literary prophet, no critic has extensively investigated Morrison’s major works by way of textual analysis under this subject, to discuss Morrison prophetic prose, her motivation for engaging in a form of prophetic writing, and the context of this writing in a wider general, as well as an African-American, tradition. This dissertation takes on a more comprehensive, cross-sectional analysis of her works that has been previously employed, concentrating on five of Morrison’s major novels: The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon, Beloved, Jazz and Paradise, in an order to assess how Morrison develops and infuses warnings and admonitions of biblical proportions. This investigation seeks to reveal Morrison’s motivation to prophecy to Americans, black and white, the context in which she engages with her historical and contemporary subjects, and the nature of the admonitions to present and future action she offers to what she sees as a contemporary generation of socially and historically oblivious African Americans, using literary prophecy as the tool by which to accomplish her objectives. This dissertation also demonstrates—by way of textual analysis and literary theory—the evolution through five novels of Morrison’s development as a literary prophet.

The broad aim of this study is to show, through a comparative and contrasting analysis of three thematically related texts - namely Peter Abrahams's Mine Boy; Alan Patan's Cry, the Beloved Country and Phyllis Altman's The Law of the Vultures - the ideologically mediated nature of the relationship between the 'real' history which constituted their context, and the representations of it in the historical realist form. An examination afthe texts' characters and events; political formulations, and formal devices reveals three very different representations of the same object. This diversity is significant in so far as it supports a Marxist conceptualisation of the [historical] realist text as a production of ideology as opposed to a portrayal of reality. The study considers the nature of the relationship between each text and ideology in terms of three aspects of this relationship: the 'objectively determinable' relation between history, ideology and text; the ideology of the text itself, and the mode of a text's insertion into an 'ideological sub-ensemble.' Este trabalho tem como tema O papel da mulher no cristianismo primitivo: uma leitura do quarto evangelho. Foi realizada pesquisa bibliográfica sobre a literatura especializada no assunto. O aprofundamento do tema possibilitou uma compreensão das sociedades patriarcais da área do Mediterrâneo, no I séc. a.C e d.C, principalmente a sociedade judaica, greco romana e egípcia nas quais a dominação do homem sobre a mulher se dava de muitas maneiras. Na sociedade judaica pesava ainda as leis de pureza. Na sociedade greco romana essa dominação era legitimada pela crença de que as divindades determinavam os papéis sociais. Nesse contexto, surgiu o movimento de Jesus com uma prática social e religiosa que contrariava as leis do sistema patriarcal. Nesse movimento, conforme a literatura joanina registrada no quarto evangelho, as mulheres desempenharam um papel de protagonistas, tanto no movimento como na organização das primeiras comunidades. O quarto evangelho guardou a memória dessas mulheres aqui analisadas: Maria, mãe de Jesus nas Bodas de Caná antecipou a hora e introduziu Jesus no seu ministério público. Maria, novamente presente na hora da glorificação de Jesus na cruz, recebeu a nova comunidade representada na figura do discípulo ou discípula amada. A mulher samaritana, na beira do poço, com quem Jesus estabeleceu um diálogo, contrariando todos os costumes da época, torna-se a missionária dos samaritanos. Marta, a literatura joanina guardou a memória de sua profissão de fé semelhante à de Pedro nas comunidades apostólicas. Maria sua irmã, discípula, teve a atitude própria de discípula que na sociedade patriarcal era reservada só aos homens. Na comunidade joanina foi ela quem ungiu Jesus. Maria Madalena a primeira a ver Jesus ressuscitado e a testemunhar: eu vi o Senhor. / This work has the theme "The role of women in early Christianity: a reading of the Fourth Gospel." Bibliographical research was performed on the subject in question. The deepening of the theme enabled an understanding of patriarchal societies of the Mediterranean area, in the first century b.C and a.C., mainly Jewish society, Greco Roman and Egyptian in which the domination of men over women was given in many ways. In Jewish society still weighed purity laws. In Greco Roman society that domination was legitimized by the belief that the gods determined social roles. In this context, born the Jesus movement with a social and religious practice that is contrary to the laws of the patriarchal system. In this movement, as the Johannine literature recorded in the fourth gospel, women played a leading role both in movement and in the organization of the first communities. The fourth gospel keeps the memory of these women analyzed here: Mary, mother of Jesus at the Wedding at Cana anticipates the hour and introduces Jesus in his public ministry. Maria again present at the time of the glorification of Jesus on the cross, receives the new community represented in the figure of the disciple or beloved disciple. The Samaritan woman at the edge of the pit, with whom Jesus establishes a dialogue, against all the customs of the time, it becomes a missionary of the Samaritans. Marta, the Johannine literature keeps the memory of his profession of faith like Peter in the apostolic communities. His sister Maria, is a disciple, has the proper attitude of disciple, that in patriarchal society was reserved only to men. In Johannine community is she who anoints Jesus. Mary Magdalene the first to see the risen Jesus and testifies: "I saw the Lord".

Este estudo analisa duas traduções em língua portuguesa da Beloved, de autoria de Toni Morrison, em Português do Brasil, uma de Evelyn Kay Massaro (1994), outra de José Rubens Siqueira (2007). Enfatiza as diferenças e/ou semelhanças entre ambas, a partir de um levantamento preliminar das características do dialeto Black English Vernacular, empregado pela autora, e as respectivas traduções desse dialeto. A comparação do original com as duas traduções processou-se com base em postulados teórico-críticos da Literatura Comparada e dos Estudos de Tradução. Em um primeiro momento, examinam-se seleções específicas do uso das formas do Black English Vernacular em detalhes, a fim de verificar a eficiência neste aspecto em ambas as traduções em Português e mostrar os recursos usados pelos tradutores e os resultados obtidos. Após, emite-se nosso ponto de vista sobre a análise mencionada anteriormente, tentando formular uma hipótese geral sobre os fenômenos observados com reflexões sobre os problemas envolvidos na tradução de dialetos. / This paper analyses two Portuguese translations of Beloved by Toni Morrison into Brazilian Portuguese, made by Evelyn Kay Massaro (1994) and other by José Rubem Siqueira (2007). It emphasizes the differences and/or similarities between them, based on a preliminary investigation whose main focus was the use of Black English Vernacular used by the author and their respective translations. The comparison of the original work with its translations was based on theoretical and critical postulates of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies. At first, specific excerpts of the use of Black English Vernacular forms in the text were selected and examined in detail, in order to establish the efficiency of this aspect in both Portuguese translations and to show the resources used by the translators and the results achieved. In second place, this work presents our point of view about the afore mentioned analysis, trying to formulate a general hypothesis for the observed phenomena. It raises questions about the literary dialects and the problems involved in their translation.

Porém, a rememoração possibilita a memória coletiva, enquanto a renembrança ocasiona a memória individual. As estratégias narrativas de cada romance acompanham a caracterização de cada um desses processos, distinguindo-se na constituição da memória... / The concepts of rememory and renembrança are presented and defined in Toni Morrison‟s Beloved (1987) and Ana Miranda‟s Desmundo (1996), respectively, as mnemonic processes incorporated into the fictional space in order to revise official national historical perspectives. The American and the Brazilian novels were both based on facts that took place in crucial historical moments of the master narrative concerning the national formation of each country. Beloved revisits the crime committed by Margaret Garner, a fugitive slave, during the pre-Civil War years, when she killed her own daughter in an attempt to save her children from returning to slavery. Desmundo recollects the experiences of one of the Portuguese orphan girls sent to sixteenth-century colonial Brazil to serve as wives, by orders of the king and by the request of the priests who wanted to put an end to the sexual relations among Portuguese colonialists and natives. Rememory and Renembrança set the interrelations between memory, history and literature because they are the mnemonic processes engendered by the characters and, at the same time, they form the structure of the novels. Rememory is defined as the image that lasts (individually and in the world) when something no longer exists; renembrança originates from singular experiences and establishes relations with a fantasy world. The two processes share features related to the enigma of representation that recaptures past events, such as paradoxical constructions of absences and distances. However, rememory triggers collective memory whereas renembrança belongs to individual memory. The narrative strategies of each novel follow the characteristics of each process, distinguishing themselves in the creation of characters‟ memory and experiences.
