Este estudo analisa duas traduções em língua portuguesa da Beloved, de autoria de Toni Morrison, em Português do Brasil, uma de Evelyn Kay Massaro (1994), outra de José Rubens Siqueira (2007). Enfatiza as diferenças e/ou semelhanças entre ambas, a partir de um levantamento preliminar das características do dialeto Black English Vernacular, empregado pela autora, e as respectivas traduções desse dialeto. A comparação do original com as duas traduções processou-se com base em postulados teórico-críticos da Literatura Comparada e dos Estudos de Tradução. Em um primeiro momento, examinam-se seleções específicas do uso das formas do Black English Vernacular em detalhes, a fim de verificar a eficiência neste aspecto em ambas as traduções em Português e mostrar os recursos usados pelos tradutores e os resultados obtidos. Após, emite-se nosso ponto de vista sobre a análise mencionada anteriormente, tentando formular uma hipótese geral sobre os fenômenos observados com reflexões sobre os problemas envolvidos na tradução de dialetos. / This paper analyses two Portuguese translations of Beloved by Toni Morrison into Brazilian Portuguese, made by Evelyn Kay Massaro (1994) and other by José Rubem Siqueira (2007). It emphasizes the differences and/or similarities between them, based on a preliminary investigation whose main focus was the use of Black English Vernacular used by the author and their respective translations. The comparison of the original work with its translations was based on theoretical and critical postulates of Comparative Literature and Translation Studies. At first, specific excerpts of the use of Black English Vernacular forms in the text were selected and examined in detail, in order to establish the efficiency of this aspect in both Portuguese translations and to show the resources used by the translators and the results achieved. In second place, this work presents our point of view about the afore mentioned analysis, trying to formulate a general hypothesis for the observed phenomena. It raises questions about the literary dialects and the problems involved in their translation.

Thick Love : A Psychoanalytical Study of Mother-Daughter Relationships in Toni Morrison’s Beloved

This study employs psychoanalytical theories to explore how the conscious, unconscious, and subconscious workings of the mind, combined with a search for identity, are presented and dealt with in Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved (1987). It is done through a close reading and in-depth textual analysis of thematic concerns raised in the work. Previous research has primarily relied on some specific aspects of psychoanalytic theory and applied it to Beloved. The theoretical framework provides a rationale for this paper to research two events in particular that highlight the mother-daughter relationships between Sethe and her Ma’am and between Sethe and her daughter Beloved. These relationships are consequently analyzed by employing psychoanalytical concepts offered by Freud, Lacan and Kristeva. By utilizing psychoanalytical criticism, the characters’ conscious and unconscious motives and feelings are revealed and explained, as well as the meanings and the undercurrents that lie underneath the text’s consciousness. The results suggest that Sethe murdered her daughter Beloved to keep her from becoming a slave and enduring the dreadful and traumatic consequences of slavery, which was similar to what Sethe went through when she was abandoned by her Ma'am. Sethe’s childhood psychological principles and trauma shaped her identity as a mother as she witnessed her mother abandoning her at a young age by being tortured and killed. The events around Sethe’s mother’s death and the fact that Sethe never identifies her mother’s dead body, scar Sethe for life and instill in Sethe a sense of “lack” and an abnormal feeling of maternal love where she is ready to kill her children to save them from the horror of slavery.

“I Can’t Die. I Won’t.”: Towards a Radical Reimagination of the (After)Lives of Black Women in Baltimore

Calls to protect Black women have garnered national attention, drawing attention to the axes of racialized and gendered violence that are central to this dissertation project: the intersecting mis/recognition of Black women’s vulnerability and affect within and outside of their own racial communities constrains their possibilities to seek repair and justice for harm. Baltimore community members used social media platforms to call attention to gendered violence, joining movements like Kimberlé Crenshaw’s #SayHerName and Tarana Burke’s #MeToo Movement to address the erasure of violent experiences of Black women and girls; yet the mis/recognition of their affective experiences persists through the societal focus on Black male vulnerability. Through careful ethnographic study with Baltimorean anti-gendered violence activists, Black gendered violence survivors, and Black community healers, this dissertation analyzes how these women and non-binary people mobilize emotions to construct memorial spaces, community-based movements, and their own lives in the midst of pervasive state and interpersonal violence. I investigate the affective and political processes of Black urban place-making, self-making, and memorialization to answer: How do Black women define their own subjectivity at the intersections of antiblack and gendered violence? How does their political mobilization of emotions such as fear and grief transform gendered and racialized understandings of affect? To answer these questions, I use a Black feminist care practice to examine the themes of haunting, violence, home, and care and to conceptualize new analytic tools for writing about violence against Black women. The first chapter of my dissertation undertakes a Black feminist reading of ethnographic interview data, Toni Morrison’s Beloved (1987), and Gayl Jones’s Corregidora (1975), examining themes of reproduction, violence, and slavery’s afterlife that ripple from the novels’ pages to my and my interlocutors’ lives. I locate the haunting inside and outside of the Black female body, and I discuss the particular way that Black trans life illuminates that haunting. In my second chapter, I explore the (im)possibility of gendered Black affect through a Black feminist mapping of the myriad practices Black people use to create home as a transitory, affective, symbolic, and metamorphic place. This chapter employs autoethnography and interlocutor photographs of emotional sites as analytical and methodological tools to answer its driving questions. The third chapter discusses Black gendered memorialization practices for victims of state-sanctioned and interpersonal violence. I develop my conceptualization of imagined (after)life and self power using ethnographic and archival data, using the aftermath of Korryn Gaines’s and Breonna Taylor’s state-sanctioned murders as primary texts. The fourth and final chapter of my dissertation focuses on Black anti-gendered violence activism and its challenges and failures in Baltimore. By examining the lived experiences of Black activist-organizers, I highlight the complexities inherent in the pursuit of Black liberation. Using a Black feminist abolitionist framework, I analyze photographs, art, and poetry from local artist-activists to illustrate how (after)lives of interpersonal violence survivors can be made radical. My analysis of the affective experiences of Black women and nonbinary people in Baltimore and the gendered politics of grievability in Black anti-violence movements ultimately demonstrates how these movements re-entrench white supremacist patriarchal norms that undermine the pursuit of Black liberation. Thus, we must turn to Black feminist abolitionist praxis to achieve liberation for all Black people.

Such images of this personality, therefore, extend from the perception that she was only a young woman in love and so as to live a great love she would face any obstacle, to the perception of an idealistic and questioning woman, who would take part in wars for political conviction regardless of his loving involvement with a revolutionary sailor. The corpus that provides us with the basis for the study comes from three different contexts: The United States, Brazil and Argentina. The selection of this material considered criteria such as: the belonging of one of the works to the traditional modality of the genre, whose discourse linked to Anita and Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882) is apologetic; a deconstructive perspective of this character hitherto idealized, in a critical production that presents the protagonist who sees in his partner someone to share ideals and for this reason does not accept to be relegated to live in the shadow of that relationship; and also a modality of historical novel whose ideology is mediative in comparison with these two previous productions, aiming at a configuration of Anita that conjugates the representation of both facets commonly evidenced: the lover and the politics. In this sense, each author, through the specificity of his chosen language and modality, approaches the character of historical extraction by a singular prism - the uncritical, the critical and the mediative. To make this analysis possible, in an interamerican dimension, the works selected are: I Am My Beloved: The Life of Anita Garibaldi (1969), written by the American Lisa Sergio, A Guerrilheira (1979), by the Brazilian João Felício dos Santos and Anita cubierta de arena (2003), by the Argentinian Alicia Dujovne Ortiz. Therefore, we show that the fictional images of Anita Garibaldi also trace a historical and sequential trajectory of the hybrid genre of history and fiction. Hence, the theoretical support of this approach, both to the character and to the different modalities of historical romance, finds support in the studies of Aínsa (1991), Menton (1993), Rodríguez (1996), Esteves (2010), Fleck (2011; 2017), Fernández Prieto (2003), to name but a few. / Com base nos estudos das narrativas ficcionais que releem o passado histórico, a pesquisa em questão analisa distintas modalidades de romances históricos a partir da representação de Anita Garibaldi (1821–1849), em perspectivas que buscam ora corroborar o discurso oficial, ora desconstruí-lo. Tais imagens dessa personalidade se estendem, portanto, da percepção de que ela era apenas uma jovem apaixonada e que, para viver um grande amor, enfrentaria qualquer obstáculo, até a percepção de uma mulher idealista e questionadora, que participaria de guerras por convicção política independentemente de seu envolvimento amoroso com um marinheiro revolucionário. O corpus que serve de base para o estudo parte de três contextos diferentes: Os Estados Unidos, o Brasil e a Argentina. A seleção desse material considerou critérios como: o pertencimento de uma das obras à modalidade tradicional do gênero, cujo discurso vinculado à Anita e Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807–1882) é apologético; uma perspectiva desconstrucionista dessa personagem até então idealizada, em uma produção crítica que apresenta a protagonista que vê em seu companheiro alguém para partilhar ideais e que não se deixa viver à sombra desse relacionamento; e, ainda, uma modalidade de romance histórico cuja ideologia é mediativa em comparação com essas duas produções anteriores, atentando para uma configuração de Anita que conjuga a representação de ambas as facetas comumente evidenciadas: a amante e a política. Like her first four novels, Beloved centers on the social injustice which the black people are confronted with in their lives, depicting how African Americans struggle to survive under the oppression of racism. What renders Beloved different is its subject—the history of slavery, which was never dealt with in Morrison’s novels. The main characters in Beloved are ex-slaves who have undergone the atrocities of slavery. By recounting the characters’ experiences, the novel represents the horrors of slavery and the atrocities traumatizing the black people. In their post-traumatic lives, the characters are trapped in their traumatic memory. Although they show reluctance to recall the painful past, the traumatized characters are haunted by their indelible memories. However, the story is not completely tragic since, in the end, the characters are not defeated by their trauma. They endeavor to support each other, trying to rid themselves of traumatic memory and to rebuild a new life. The story of Beloved, which revolves around Sethe’s secret of infanticide, is constructed from the characters’ traumatic memory. Since the story is closely related to trauma, most critics explore Beloved in terms of memory, trauma, and its narrative style. However, critics often discuss only one or two topics of the above three. There are some critics analyzing the interrelation of memory, trauma and narrative in Beloved but their discussions are often the portions pertaining to the more extensive explorations based on the topic of history, race, or gender. Differing from these critical approaches, the present thesis adopts the concept of trauma narrative, using Sigmund Freud and Judith Herman’s trauma theories to analyze the interplay of trauma, memory, and narrative in Beloved. Firstly, the thesis discusses how the traumatic event affects the formation and narration of memory. The discussion also demonstrates why the traumatic memory is “an unspeakable story.” Secondly, the thesis compares the characteristics of trauma narrative with the intricate narrative of Beloved. The discussion centers on how Morrison adopts the characteristic of trauma narrative to represent a story of trauma. Lastly, the thesis explores the interrelation between trauma narrative and trauma healing. The discussion intends to clarify how trauma narrative becomes a prerequisite for trauma healing.

A presente pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar, do ponto de vista descritivo, como foram realizadas as traduções de marcadores culturais presentes em duas obras da escritora afro-americana Toni Morrison: The Bluest Eye, traduzida por Manoel Paulo Ferreira como O Olho Mais Azul, e Beloved, traduzida por José Rubens Siqueira como Amada. Pretende-se analisar as escolhas e tendências tradutórias de cada tradutor diante das diferenças culturais entre a cultura fonte e a cultura meta. Para a realização deste estudo, apoiamo-nos no arcabouço teórico-metodológico dos Estudos da Tradução Baseados em Corpus (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000; CAMARGO 2005, 2007) e da Linguística de Corpus (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004).Para a investigação de marcadores culturais nos baseamos na reformulação realizada por Aubert (1981, 2006) a partir do trabalho sobre domínios culturais de Nida (1945). Para a extração e análise dos termos utilizamos o software WordSmith Tools versão 7.0. O presente estudo contém análises descritivas de 14 marcadores culturais selecionados a partir da lista de palavraschave gerada pelo WordSmith Tools, descrevendo as tendências e padrões tradutórios presentes nos textos meta e considerando, no âmbito da tradução, a especificidade dos romances e as diferenças culturais e históricas entre os Estados Unidos e o Brasil nos contextos históricos dos romances. / In this research, we intend to analyse, from the descriptive point of view, how the translations of cultural markers were held in two novels written by the Afro-American writer Toni Morrison: The Bluest Eye, translated by Manoel Paulo Ferreira as O Olho Mais Azul, and Beloved, translated by José Rubens Siqueira as Amada. We intend to analyse the choices and the translation tendencies of each translator before the cultural differences between the source culture and target culture. Our theoretical basis for the development of this research study is the theoretical and methodological approach of Corpus-Based Translation Studies (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000; CAMARGO 2005, 2007) and Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004). We are also based on the study of cultural domains developed by Nida (1945) and reformulated by Aubert (1981, 2006). For term extraction and analysis, we used the WordSmith Tools software, version 7.0. So, this study contains descriptive analyses of 14 cultural markers selected from the keywords list created by WordSmith Tools, describing translation tendencies and patterns in the target texts and considering, in the scope of translation, the specificity of the novels and the cultural and historical differences between the United States and Brazil in the historical contexts of the novels.

Establishing the Bondmother: Examining the Categorization of Maternal Figures in Toni Morrison’s Beloved and Paradise

Literary scholars have been examining and recreating the experiences of “bonded” female characters within Toni Morrison’s novels for decades. However, the distinct experiences of these enslaved women, that are also mothers have not been astutely examined by scholars and deserves more attention. My thesis fleshes out the characterization of several of Morrison’s bonded-mothers and identifies them as a part of a developing controlling image and theory, called the bondmother. Situating these characters within this category allows readers to trace their journeys towards freedom and personal redemption. This character tracing will occur by examining the following Toni Morrison novels: Beloved (1987) and Paradise (1997).
