Burkertová, Zuzana January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this work is to evaluate the current procedures and to indicate the development of the cataloging practice towards the RDA rules based on research and analysis of bibliographic production serials in selected Czech and foreign libraries. The diploma thesis is divided into several chapters. After introducing the issue of serial documents follows the chapter devoted to the standards and resources for cataloging the continuing resources that the catalogers should know. The next chapter deals with the FRBR and its application to the serials. Part of the chapter dealing with RDA rules from the serials perspective is also the analysis of these rules according to the FRBR structure available in the RDA Toolkit. Three chapters are devoted to the analysis of bibliographic processing, first in foreign libraries, then in Czech libraries, and in the last chapter there is a comparison of selected periodicals in foreign and Czech libraries. At the end of the thesis are presented the impacts of application of the FRBR model and RDA rules on serials cataloging. Keywords serials - periodicals - continuing resources - rules RDA - FRBR - FRBRoo - PRESSoo - cataloging - bibliographic record - library

Considerations for Identifying and Conducting Cluster Randomized Trials / Considerations For Identifying and Conducting Cluster Trials

Al-Jaishi, Ahmed January 2021 (has links)
Background: The cluster randomized trial design randomly assigns groups of people to different treatment arms. This dissertation aimed to (1) develop machine learning algorithms to identify cluster trials in bibliographic databases, (2) assess reporting of methodological and ethical elements in hemodialysis-related cluster trials, and (3) assess how well two covariate-constrained randomization methods balanced baseline characteristics compared with simple randomization. Methods: In study 1, we developed three machine learning algorithms that classify whether a bibliographic citation is a CRT report or not. We only used the information available in an article citation, including the title, abstract, keywords, and subject headings. In study 2, we conducted a systematic review of CRTs in the hemodialysis setting to review the reporting of key methodological and ethical issues. We reviewed CRTs published in English between 2000 and 2019 and indexed in MEDLINE or EMBASE. In study 3, we assessed how well two covariate-constrained randomization methods balanced baseline characteristics compared with simple randomization. Results: In study 1, we successfully developed high-performance algorithms that identified whether a citation was a CRT. Our algorithms had greater than 97% sensitivity and 77% specificity in identifying CRTs. For study 2, we found suboptimal conduct and reporting of methodological issues of CRTs in the hemodialysis setting and incomplete reporting of key ethical issues. For study 3, where we randomized 72 clusters, constraining the randomization using historical information achieved a better balance on baseline characteristics than simple randomization; however, the magnitude of benefit was modest. Conclusions: This dissertation's results will help researchers quickly identify cluster trials in bibliographic databases (study 1) and inform the design and analyses of future Canadian trials conducted within the hemodialysis setting (study 2 & 3). / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / The cluster trial design randomly assigns groups of people to different treatment arms rather than individuals. Cluster trials are commonly used in research areas such as education, public health, and health service research. Examples of clusters can include villages/communities, worksites, schools, hospitals, hospital wards, and physicians. This dissertation aimed to (1) develop machine learning algorithms to identify cluster trials in bibliographic databases, (2) assess reporting of methodological and ethical elements in hemodialysis-related cluster trials, and (3) identified best practices for randomly assigning hemodialysis centers in cluster trials. We conducted three studies to address these aims. The results of this dissertation will help researchers quickly identify cluster trials in bibliographic databases (study 1) and inform the design and analyses of future Canadian trials conducted within the hemodialysis setting (study 2 & 3).

Into the bibliography jungle: using random forests to predict dissertations’ reference section

Gutiérrez De la Torre, Silvia E., Niekler, Andreas, Equihua, Julián, Burghardt, Manuel 26 June 2024 (has links)
Cited-works-lists in Humanities dissertations are typically the result of five years of work. However, despite the long-standing tradition of reference mining, no research has systematically untapped the bibliographic data of existing electronic thesis collections. One of the main reasons for this is the difficulty of creating a tagged gold standard for the around 300 pages long theses. In this short paper, we propose a page-based random forest (RF) prediction approach which uses a new corpus of Literary Studies Dissertations from Germany. Moreover, we will explain the handcrafted but computationally informed feature-selection process. The evaluation demonstrates that this method achieves an F1 score of 0.88 on this new dataset. In addition, it has the advantage of being derived from an interpretable model, where feature relevance for prediction is clear, and incorporates a simplified annotation process.

Do tecer do algodão ao tecer da informação: organizando a explosão informacional do século XIX / -

Mendes, Luciana Corts 27 November 2014 (has links)
Analyses the objectives and proposals of information organisation developed by the Bibliographic Movement, and indicates its influence in Information Science. This exploratory research, accomplished through bibliographic survey, literature review, and analysis, investigates in the context of modernity the ideas of Bibliographic Movement exponents Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald, H. G. Wells, John Cotton Dana, and Watson Davis. The Bibliographic Movement was characterized by its plurality, and aimed to respond to modernity\'s effects in the information world. The movement attributed to information the potentiality of individual transformation. Therefore, it changed the focus of information services from preservation to access, and pursued the organisation of collections according to its contents. The development of technology made the Bibliographic Movement exponents emphasise the application of new technologies to the process of information dissemination in order to facilitate and accelerate it. Information Science inherited its social role partially from the Bibliographic Movement, and aims at organising information so that it can be accessed. Information Science also shares with the movement the perspective of employing high technology to disseminate information. The Zeitgeist that gave rise to the Bibliographic Movement led to a common set of ideas and allowed the elaboration of similar proposals for the organisation of information. However, it is not discarded the probability of mutual influence between the individuals analysed. Despite its historical specificity the Bibliographic Movement shares with Information Science modern ideas and its relation to culture. It is concluded that the current information culture and the information culture of the Bibliographic Movement have differences, notwithstanding, they are entwined cultures and many of their problems are similar and need similar solutions

For so much, a metodological proceeding was proposed and tested for realization of bibliographic survey, whose stages allowed its structuring. A search in Brazilian journals of Psychology Qualis A and/or B, indexed on basis of virtual data BVS-Psi, for published articles from 2001 to 2008, with at least a psychologist as author and/or co-author was performed. Of a total of 7.550 published articles, there were selected 17 articles, which were paying attention to the established criteria of inclusion. For analysis, there were delimited categories of identification (author, place and chronology); of metodological and theoretic characteristics (theoretical approach, type of study and method); and of content (white type of surgery, population of the acting, proposed intervention and obtained results). It was noticed that the articles were published by psychologists (71,05 %), who are linked to postgraduate courses in institutions of superior teaching, especially USP (47,06 %). Empirical inquiries (76,48 %) were predominant, with cognitivecomportamental theoretical approach (41,18 %). There prevailed the use of semidirected interviews in the pre and/or post surgical period (23,54 %) with the objective to value feelings at pre and/or post surgical contexts (23,54 %) of the adult patient (47,06 %). There are proposed techniques of psychological intervention of evaluation (76,48 %) and pre-surgical preparation (52,95 %), aiming to prevent complications resulting from psychological factors. Because of the shortage of publications devoted specifically to the study of this form of acting, the necessity of new fronts of studies for a deep understanding of the means of acting of the psychologist in surgical contexts was discussed and proposed / O presente trabalho tem como objetivo realizar um mapeamento bibliográfico do conhecimento produzido na literatura científica da Psicologia no que se refere à atuação do psicólogo em contextos cirúrgicos.

Adilson Marcos Montefusco 23 February 2018 (has links)
Idioma, tipo do documento, indicador Scimago (cites per doc - 2 years) e categoria do assunto do periódico influenciaram significantemente o número de citações recebidas / Introduction: The challenge of increasing the impact of Brazilian science has been much discussed. Compared with other countries, Brazil has a high publication rate, but with low citation index per document. While sponsoring and research institutions are proposing international cooperation as a means of increasing the impact of science, journal editors question this demand. Objective: To evaluate whether, in Brazilian medical journals, the number of received citations is influenced by the type of authors affiliation and other variables related to the document or to the journal. Methods: A total of 61 medical journals published in Brazil in 2012 were analyzed, SCImago and Scopus were used to extract the articles and their data. The number of citations of a document over five years was analyzed according to the authors\' affiliation (national, international or in collaboration), language and document type, SCImago index and journal subject category. Results: Univariate analyses showed that all tested variables influenced the number of received citations. After adjusting for covariates by multivariate analysis, we observed an increase of citations in 0.17 (95% CI: 0.094-0.246) for documents with affiliation in collaboration when compared to national affiliation. A significant increase in the number of citations was observed in bilingual documents (English and Portuguese) 0.329 (95% CI: 0.256-0.402) and only English 0.158 (95% CI: 0.086-0.231) when compared to documents in Portuguese, document type: Article 1.716 (95% CI: 1.410-2.021) and Review 2.931 (95% CI: 2.618-3.245) when compared to Article-in-Press and that have subject category Hematology 1.280 (95% CI: 1.019-1.540), among others, when compared to geriatrics and gerontology. Conclusion: Documents with authorship in collaboration increased, in a discreet way, the citation index in journals of interest, when compared to those with national authorship. Language, document type, SCImago index (cites per doc 2 years) and journal subject category significantly influenced the number of received citations

Resource Description and Access (RDA): continuity in an ever-fluxing information age with reference to tertiary institutions in the Western Cape

van Rensburg, Rachel Janse January 2018 (has links)
Magister Library and Information Studies - MLIS / Although Resource Description and Access (RDA) has been discussed extensively amongst the ranks of cataloguers internationally, no research on the perceptions of South African cataloguers was available at the time of this research. The aim of this study was to determine how well RDA was faring during the study's timeframe, to give a detailed description regarding cataloguer perceptions within a higher education setting in South Africa. Furthermore, to determine whether the implementation of RDA has overcome most of the limitations that AACR2 had within a digital environment, to identify advantages and/or perceived limitations of RDA as well as to assist cataloguers to adopt and implement the new standard effectively. The study employed a qualitative research design assisted by a phenomenological philosophy to gain insight into how cataloguers experienced the implementation and adoption of RDA by means of two concurrent web-based questionnaires. The study concluded that higher education cataloguing professionals residing in the Western Cape were decidedly positive towards the new cataloguing standard. Although there were some initial reservations, they were overcome to such an extent that ultimately no real limitations were identified, and that RDA has indeed overcome most of the limitations displayed by AACR2. Many advantages of RDA were identified, and participants expressed excitement about the future capabilities of RDA as it continues toward a link-data milieu, making library metadata more easily available.
