Ranking de publicações baseado na extração de textos da Internet / Ranking of publications based on extraction of texts of the Internet

Oliveira, Henrique Przibisczki de 12 April 2009 (has links)
Orientador: Ricardo de Oliveira Anido / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Computação / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-15T07:19:24Z (GMT). This information is very important for a researcher to choose renowned venues to publish his research. Institutes could promote their researchers based on the quality of places they have published. This information about the venues can also be valuable for a government to allocate resources to universities, or for companies to evaluate the quality of a candidate for a job. There are other distinct measures to perform a ranking of venues, but the idea in common among most of them is the use of citations. Therefore, despite the fact a venue is very prestigious for its researchers, if it is not indexed in a citation database, it will not be considered, since its "quality" cannot be measured. This work proposes to construct a ranking of publication venues obtaining the information not from a database, but from another data source: the Web. The university professor's webpages are visited to extract the publications. The venue is extracted from each publication, and thus, based on venues which a researcher wanted to show in his webpage, they are ranked. This method will include publication venues that do not exist in current databases, creating a new ranking of publications. Many interesting computational problems are discussed in this work: information search on the internet, text segmentation, extraction of components in a bibliographic citation, and clustering / Mestrado / Metodologia e Tecnicas da Computação / Mestre em Ciência da Computação

A biblioteca universitária como ambiente de aprendizagem no ensino superior / The academic library as an environment for learning on the higher education.

Margarida Maria de Sousa 16 September 2009 (has links)
The learning process at the university has been increasingly trying to develop reflexive and critical professionals, offering them a close contact with the reality since their intern period as students. The academic library has been seen frequently as an environment to support learning, research and additional studies activities at the academia. Nevertheless, it also has the role to contribute to the student immersion on the academic research, developing activities as a medium for its users to search for information so that they could transform it in knowledge. It is taken into consideration the importance of Librarianship and Information Science to dialogue with other areas as Education, Scientific Methodology and Psychology. This paper deals with the concepts of information and knowledge, academic library, users studies and learning. Its goal is to discuss the role of the librarian in relation to its users education, understanding the library as a place to acquire knowledge. The study is based on the constructive Information Search Process (ISP) from Carol Kuhlthau. The research has an exploratory character with qualitative approach through interviews with students from graduation and post graduation from three fields: Humanities, Biological and Exact Sciences from Universidade de São Paulo (Sao Paulo University). By the end of the analysis, it is concluded that there is a need and space for the university library to become an environment proper to collaborate on the knowledge of the university student.

Springs are important landscape elements due to its economic, social and ecological importance. In view of the increasing degradation of these ecosystems, added to low knowledge about their biodiversity in tropical regions, the main goal of this study is to increase the knowledge about springs in tropical regions and to provide information on the diversity and ecological aspects of aquatic oligochaetes in this ecosystem. To confirm the lack of studies in springs, specifically considering freshwater oligochaetes, a bibliographic survey has was made basead on the studies carried in a period of 30 years (1985-2015) in various continental aquatic environments around the world. The survey showed that spring are one of the least studied ecosystems, together with cave water bodies and swamps. For this study, fauna was collected, physical and chemical variables were measured, and a rapid assessment protocol (RAP) were applied at spring located in different cities of Minas Gerais State, either in Conservation Units or in public and private areas. The results showed differences among the oligochaetes species composition found in spring that rises diffusely forming a flooded area (helocrene), in comparasion to spring that forms streams (rheocrene) and that ones that forms a pond (limnocrene). Probably, it is due to the high heterogeneity of this kind of spring. We also verified that beta diversity was high at the three types of springs, suggesting that efforts to conserve these ecosystems should include many spring systems of all types. After applying RAP, this study emphasized that, besides the major numbers of spring, water have been classified as optimum also the springs located in urban areas were classified as moderate or poor, even when some of them were located in Conservation Units. This result highlights importance of Conservation Units on spring preservation, and also the vulnerability of these systems when inserted in urban environments. This study contributes not only for academic knowledge, but also for environmental management, once it points out the habitats and places that need more studies, showing the importance of preserving different types of spring systems for the maintenance of diversity. It also indicate the requirements for major inspections and the legal enforcement provisions needed, in order to avoid further transformations in the natural conditions of these systems.

Research on recommender systems : A bibliometric study

Ballesteros Carretero, Maria Nelida January 2021 (has links)
A recommender system is a subclass of information filtering system that seeks to predict the "rating" or "preference" a user would give to an item. These systems are present in a wide variety of applications and websites today. We can be aware of these recommendations when we are buying and articles similar to those we are looking for are suggested to us. However, they act in many other activities, such as in applications about restaurants and vacation trips. They also filter information from multimedia collections, such as Netflix or Amazon Prime. And furthermore, they are also present in browsers and they filter papers and books from repositories. They are subject to continuous research and improvement and the study of how these systems are being examined and evolve today is important because they literally filter the available information for us. This bibliometric study analyses the present-day research front on recommender systems. The chosen data source is the Web of Science bibliographic database and the study is performed following quantitative methods, using bibliometric techniques together with a qualitative assessment and interpretation of the most relevant research articles.

Collection, evaluation and selection of scientific literature : machine learning, bibliometrics and the World Wide Web

Connan, James 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: We present a system that uses statistical machine learning to identify and extract bibliography information from scientific literature. Techniques for finding and gathering useful information from the ever growing volume of knowledge on the World Wide Web (WWW), are investigated. We use hidden Markov models both for recognition of bibliography styles and extraction of bibliographic information with an accuracy of up to 97%. The accuracy with which we are able to extract this information allows us to present a case study in which we apply methods of citation analysis to information extracted from three areas of machine learning. We use this information to identify core sets of papers that have made significant contributions to the fields of hidden Markov models, neural networks and recurrent neural networks.

Are Online Catalogs for Children Giving Them What They Need? Children's Cognitive Development and Information Seeking and Their Impact on Design

Creel, Stacy 08 1900 (has links)
Research shows children in an online environment often search by browsing, which relies heavily on recognition and content knowledge, so catalog systems for children must use effective symbols or pictorial representations, which correspond with children's own cognitive schema and level of recognition knowledge. This study was designed to look at the success of young children (ages 5 to 8) in searching 3 online public library catalogs designed for them, and it focused specifically on the pictorial representations and text descriptors used in the systems' browsing hierarchy. The research sought answer whether young children (ages 5 to 8) are really poor searchers because of cognitive development and lack of technology skills or if system design is the major reason for poor search results; i.e., Do current children's online catalog designs function in a manner that is compatible with information seeking by children? Although these results can not be generalized, this study indicates that there was a disconnect between the cognitive abilities of young users and catalog design. The study looked at search success on the 3 catalogs in relation to the catalog characteristics and individual user characteristics and makes 3 significant contributions to the field of library and information science. The first contribution is the modification of an existing model posed by Cooper and O'Connor and modified by Abbas (2002). The second significant contribution is the proposal of a new model, Creel's second best choice (SBC) model, that addresses the cognitive gap and design flaws that impact the choices participants made. The third significant contribution is that this study addresses and fills a gap in the literature.
