An investigation of the coherence of instrumental accumulation, using a sculptural methodologyGilmour, Nicola Ann January 2014 (has links)
This thesis questions the coherence of modes of fabrication that introduce materials to a living context, in forms that resist the processes of biological change. In doing so this project explores the ideologies embedded in fabrication that have led to this current position. The implications of an accumulation of materials being recognized as an autonomous object, and treated as if they are detached from their environment are also expanded. The sculptural methodology used to undertake this investigation has used the feature of materiality and it’s behaviours, of both human fabrication and the living environment, as a means to explore processes outside the limitations of specialist human categories of knowledge. The vocabularies of dematerialization, expansion and relational exchange in the critique of sculpture, have provided a starting point to articulate what is implied or “mapped out but not socially recognized”1 by the structure of specialist categories. The practice-based work that has driven this project, documents an extension of sculptural fabrication, which incorporates the literal processes of growth and erosion, illustrating a radical inclusivity of all living phenomena. Engaging with fabrication through this plural and complex methodology allows for a new valuing that recognizes accumulation as a result of employing reductive specialist categories and as inherently problematic for complex living systems. This identifies coherent fabrication as that which merges its engagement with processes of biological change and utility for humans.

Previous issue date: 2008-02-18 / With the environmental degeneration the society needs to think its concepts over. Considering that the scarceness of the natural resources come from the modern system for
wealth production, the nature degeneration reversion involves a much deeper changing in the social structure than it can look in a first moment. In order to have a consistent ecological
equilibrated environment is necessary to have the institutes, already insert in the society, changed. The profit taking, the wealth distribution, the value for the use of things, besides the property, need to be faced under a new outlook. Only with the guarantee of a minimum income, able to guarantee conditions so that all humans with no exceptions have conditions of a decent life, then the environmental preservation will be established. The conscience
about the preservation need is something that will be only possible when the most part of the population have no worries with basics needs. For this, the antropocentric model needs to be replaced by a conception that respects the human dignity. Among the new models that are
coming up, the one that has stand out the most is the biocentric, for according to its focus, the human being is inserted in the life web, owning respect to all other nature creatures including other human beings. For this, the property relativity is inevitable. Nevertheless, the property is inserted in the social structure and the Brazilian population is not mature enough to promote the necessary standardized change. That’s why, is a due to the state to conduct
this change. In the current study, the state attitude toward the consolidations of the biocentric model was observed. It was analyzed the installation of the National Park of Campos Gerais, laid in the city of Ponta Grossa, and in Castro and Carambeí counties. The research is concentrated in Ponta Grossa, where more than the half of the Unit of Conservation is located, besides being a local that contains several private properties, whose owners belong to the local elite. Toward this, its evident the dispute for power and the found for the property institute. This way, there’s an urge of the state intervention, so that the collectivity is not damaged with the influence of some groups toward the local leaderships. Facing this barrier between the right to the property and the right to a ecological equilibrated environment, the second one must prevail, under the argument that the public interests must overcome private interests. The Federal constitution provides ways to the state to accomplish the environmental preservation, toward a reasonably proportion between anthropocentrism and biocentrism in its texts. The environmental preservation doe not imply, only, in the defense of the natural resources, but also of the humanity, that needs to be rescued from the ignorance caused by the system of wealth production, coming from the industrialization.

This thesis examines young people's attitudes to some aspects of sustainable development. The focus is on attitudes to preservation and to utilization of nature and also to solidarity andto equal distribution of resources. Hence the ecological, social and economic dimensions ofsustainable development are examined in the same survey. The study is aiming to examinehow the attitudes are distributed according to sex, educational programmes and urban/ruralliving as well as to examine how the values, from which the attitudes emanate, are correlatedwith each other. The results show that young female students in theoretical programs and students who livein larger cities are most supportive of nature preservation. The same pattern recurs with evengreater clarity on the attitudes to solidarity. Attitudes to utilization of nature can also be distinguishedclearly between the sexes by young men having more positive attitudes to utilizationthan young women. However, the differences between educational programmes andbetween students from urban and rural areas are clearly smaller than when it comes to attitudesto preservation and to solidarity. Attitudes to equal distribution of recources exhibitirregular patterns. Young women have more positive attitudes than young men but the linksbetween attitudes to equality and educational programme or rural/urban living, are not pointingin any clear direction. The results also show that there is a clear and positive correlationbetween positive attitudes to nature preservation and a willingness to show solidarity with awide circle of people. Those who say they care for nature also say that they are prepared tocare for other people.

Previous issue date: 2014-02-24 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study had as its aim to guide the teaching of environmental education for a more effective learning process and for this, here we present the Biosustainable Education, a theoretical-methodological proposal based on structured Biocentric Education, which seeks to incorporate an experiential learning process. The starting point of the study was this following guiding questions: what are the theoretical and methodological principles of a Biosustainable Education? And how Biosustainable Education can influence qualitatively the environmental educators formation? There is a great concern in working environmental education in or out of school for achieving the goal of forming citizens able to understand the requirements of the environment and defend, with ethics, environmental justice towards a sustainable society. For this, it is necessary that the teachers are trained to understand how the learning process and the complexity of the environment and its consequences. We collected twenty-five theses which were carefully analyzed and mined them the main theme crafted, the goals, the concept of environmental education, the methodological aspects, most theorists evidenced and discussed topics related to the environment. These data demonstrated lack of research that would emphasize the learning process linked to the experience and affection. Biosustainable Education enter then, as a fundamental tool for environmental education, a theoretical and methodological contribution to a learning process that leads to ecological awareness and behavior change facing the environment.

Biocentric Composition Techniques from the Twentieth and Twenty-First CenturiesSelin, Hannah Claire 08 1900 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the ways in which contemporary composers engage with nature through music. Through three case studies of compositions by Hildegard Westerkamp, John Luther Adams, and myself, I highlight a toolbox of biocentric composition techniques: techniques for meaningfully incorporating the natural world into music without exploiting it. In the process, I help to define the varied and ever-growing field of biocentric music—a new phrase I have coined to refer to the longstanding tradition of music based in mutual relationships between humans and nature.
The three case studies represent a variety of different approaches to biocentric composition in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, many of which involve the use of new technology. I argue that biocentric music is distinguished from other music that deals with nature by its relationality: composers must prioritize building a relationship with their environments as part of the creative process. Without this connection, composers run the risk of harvesting their sonic materials in a way that is analogous to the extraction of other natural resources: for their own benefit and that of their listeners, without consideration for the environment in all its complexities and varied life-forms. / Music Composition / Accompanied by one .pdf file : 1) Selin_temple_0225E_171/HSelin_compiled_graphicanalysis_becomeocean.pdf

Design principles to foster respect for nature in video gamesJayaraman, Goutham January 2023 (has links)
Video games are critical and relevant tools which can be used to influence perceptions of nature. Many games have already sought to educate players about environmental issues, but the effect that games as a whole have on players’ respect for nature is yet uncertain. This thesis thus aims to investigate this issue by conducting a game analysis based on a framework of respect for nature, which will be established as a foundational aspect of this paper. From the game analysis, lessons and design principles that can be employed in future game design to foster respect for nature in players will be collated.
