THE BULL SHARK (CARCHARHINUS LEUCAS) AS A SENTINEL SPECIES FOR HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM TOXINS IN THE INDIAN RIVER LAGOON, FLORIDA

This study explored spatiotemporal patterns in movement, diet, and baseline phycotoxin concentrations in immature bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) of the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), an estuary of national significance that has been considerably impacted by multiple toxic harmful algal blooms (HABs). Long-term spatial use of the system was assessed for 29 acoustically tagged sharks over a 4 year period (2017–2020). Tissue samples for diet and toxin analysis were collected from a separate cohort of 50 individuals between 2018 and 2020. UPLC-MS/MS was used to screen tissues for 14 algal toxins. Young bull sharks were found to be mainly piscivorous and displayed high residency to the IRL as well as to specific regions of the IRL, with small activity spaces. Multiple phycotoxins were detected in screened tissues, indicating that young bull sharks in the IRL may be compromised by trophic transfer of HABs while they reside in this important nursery. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Improving Student Knowledge through Experiential Learning â A Hands-On Statics Lab at Virginia Tech By: Christopher G. Alcorn It has been well documented that humans learn better through a combination of hearing, seeing, and hands-on experience than through hearing and seeing alone. Despite these findings, the majority of college instruction is through lecture. This research seeks to improve the quality of structural education for students in Building Construction, Architecture, and Engineering by allowing them to test theoretical structural concepts in a hands-on, lab environment that parallels their statics lecture class. The paper provides a background on the experiential learning approach, presents examples of others engaged in similar research, discusses the details of developing the experience-based lab class, describes the labs and their structure, and summarizes the outcome of this model class. Lessons learned, including which type of student might benefit most from the experiential learning format and shortcomings of applying the experiential learning model are discussed along with recommendations for future work. An appendix at the end of the paper displays the workbook developed to teach the class as well as pictures of the labs in action and costs of lab equipment. This project is a part of a multi-college initiative at Virginia Tech to develop a three-lab sequence to parallel Statics, Mechanics of Deformable Bodies, and Mechanical Behavior. / Master of Science

Young Whale Sharks, Rhincodon Typus, Feeding on a Copepod Bloom Near La Paz, Mexico

Seven small (3.2 to 5.2 m total length) whale sharks were observed suction feeding on patches of surface plankton in the Bay of La Paz within 1 km of shore and 2 km N of the phosphate dock at San Juan de la Costa, on 1-2 November 1993. The sharks were photographed and videotaped from the boat and by snorkelers in the water. When actively feeding the shark turned its head from side to side, part of the head was lifted out of the water, and the mouth opened and closed 7 to 28 times per minute (x̄ = 17, N = 13). These suction gulps were synchronized with the opening and closing of the gill slits. This feeding behavior occurred only in the patchy areas of densely cloudy water, a layer 10 to 30 cm thick at the surface containing an immense concentration of copepods, 95% of which were identified as Acartia clausi. Remoras accompanying the whale sharks also fed on the plankton bloom.

SammandragStyrdokumenten för gymnasieskolan reviderades 2017 och träder i kraft i juli 2018. Fokus kommer framöver att vara digital kompetens i bland annat samhällskunskap. Elever ska alltså kunna se hur samhället förändras och påverkas av digitaliseringen, samt kunna använda olika digitala medel för att visa sin kunskap. Detta innebär att lärarnas undervisningsmetoder också måste ändras och det är här som vårt intresse för ämnet sakta vuxit fram. Vi har därför undersökthur undervisning och digitala medel kan fungera tillsammans utifrån redan etablerade modeller. Vi fokuserade även på vad lärare och elever egentligen vill, för vem säger att forskares ord stämmer överens med hur det ser ut i skolan. Vi undersökte vilket läromedel framförallt lärare men även elever föredrar i samhällskunskapsundervisningen. Gällande tidigare forskning hade vi tankar kring att en del information skulle visa att läroboken trots allt var en värdig kandidat och ett fortsatt bra läromedel och därigenom minska nyttan av att ändra fokus till användning av digitala medel i undervisningen. Vi fann undersökningar som visade på att exempelvis fallbaserade undervisningsalternativ var mer effektivt än att endast använda eböcker då eleverna fick en djupare analysförmåga. Utöver detta så valde vi att diskutera digitala medel utifrån SAMR-modellen samt Blooms digitala taxonomi, vilka talade för en digitaliserad undervisning för att lärare och elever ska utmanas kognitivt. Vi hade även förutfattade tankar kring vad vår undersökning skulle få för resultat. Vi ponerade att lärarna och speciellt eleverna ville använda digitala medel mer än läroboken. Här fick vi delade åsikter från lärare och elever. Den skola som fokuserade mer på digitala medel ville självfallet primärt använda digitala medel, medan den andra skolan vi hade ville ha läroboken som primärt läromedel.

Regulated Deficit Irrigation of 'Montmorency' Tart Cherry

Regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) is the strategy of reducing irrigation rates during a specific period of growth and development, with the objective of conserving water and managing plant growth while maintaining or improving yield and fruit quality. Mature tart cherry (Prunus cerasus L. 'Montmorency') trees in a commercial orchard were subjected to a range of irrigation deficits from pit hardening to harvest during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Irrigation treatments replaced from 62% to 96% of ETc, during that period. Midday stem water potential measurements were significantly different among treatments before harvest. However, fresh weight yield at harvest did not differ significantly among irrigation treatments in either year (P-value=0.64). In 2008 the amount of undersized fruit eliminated during packout was significantly higher in the treatments replacing 61% and 68% of ETc than in the control (P-value<0.0001), but only amounted to 2.0% and 1.4% of total yields, respectively. This small increase in undersized fruit did not significantly affect packout. Fruit quality measurements, such as soluble solids concentration and chroma of whole intact fruit, increased with the severity of the irrigation deficit. Visible surface bark damage from mechanical harvesting appeared less severe as deficit levels increased. Return bloom was not significantly affected by irrigation treatments.

An Economic Analysis of Sprinkling for Bloom Delay and Freeze Protection of Apples in Farmington, Utah

The major purpose of this study is to analyze the economic feasibility of bloom delay by sprinkling as a means of protecting delicious apples from frost. The framework of this study is based on decision making theory under uncertainty. It demonstrates the usefulness of the Bayesian approach to determine optimum action to take in face of uncertain climatic conditions. The economic analysis was conducted for Farmington, Utah, where significant relationships were found between the end of winter rest (end of chill-unit accumulation) and time of full bloom of red delicious apples. A posteriori probabilities for the state of nature were determined using accumulated data of end of winter rest of the apple trees. Applying the Bayesian approach, optimal strategies were determined by use of a posteriori probabilities and knowledge of time of end of winter rest. It was concluded from the analysis that the installation of solid set sprinklers and use of sprinkling to delay bloom is an effective means of frost protection. Sprinkling provides two methods of freeze protection. Bud development can be delayed increasing the hardiness of the bud to colder temperatures. Sprinkling can also be used during periods of freezing temperatures to protect the buds from freezing. It was found that a combination of protection by delay and by sprinkling for freeze protection would result in increased net returns over any other alternative. An important finding of this study is that with the dual protection afforded by sprinkling, extended amounts of delay are not necessary to obtain the desired results.
