The preaching community - a practical theological analysis of the role of preaching within the Christian Brethren ChurchSmith, David Andrew 24 July 2008 (has links)
This dissertation studies the role of preaching in the Christian Brethren Church from a practical theological perspective. I commence by setting up a practical theological theory that draws from both revelatory and anthropological models to develop a preaching model that considers preaching as a Revelatory Covenantal Conversation involving divine revelation, community dialogue and intended response, and has ecclesiological focus and impact. In this dissertation I propose a theological theory on the role of preaching in the church which asserts that: Preaching stands, in the line of the self revelation of God, as his continuing action to both reveal himself, and be present with his covenant people of promise. Therefore preaching within the church must conform to this revelation in: event – the covenantal conversation itself; message – the content of the preaching; interpretation/response – the preacher’s intended response by the hearers; the intention - the intended shaping of the community of faith through the preaching event. Preaching is a continuing Revelatory Covenantal Conversation between God and his people to create, transform, and continue his community of faith – the preaching community. Following a discussion of the above preaching theory a Revelatory Covenantal Conversational preaching model is presented. An examination of the preaching praxis within the Christian Brethren denomination is then undertaken. The praxis study gives specific consideration to the place and role of preaching in the historical development of the Brethren, as well as within the current Christian Brethren praxis. In addition a qualitative analysis of the praxis within the local Christian Brethren church that I attend is considered. According to Zerfass “practical theology has the task to lead in... [the] process of change in a way that is responsible from the perspective of both theology and the social sciences” (Heitink 1993: 113). To this end the final chapter suggests possible aspects of change, theological and practical, that can move the praxis forward toward an alternative praxis – to create a preaching community which incorporates the above theological theory and critical reflection on the praxis, and thereby participating fully in the Revelatory Covenantal Conversation. / Dissertation (MA (Theology) : Practical Theology)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

Komunikace mezi cenzurními institucemi a církevními časopisy v letech 1956-1989 na příkladu Českobratrské církve evangelické / Communication between censorship institutions and church magazines duringthe period 1956-1989 as per example of the Evangelical Church of Czech BrethrenDu Toit, Petra January 2012 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the issue of the publication of church newspapers and magazines and the regulation thereof by state institutions and organs of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the period 1956-1989. The first chapter gives a general overview of the policy of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia in the field of mass media and is divided into three parts: after the Second World War, after the communist putsch in February 1948 and after the invasion by armies of the Soviet Block in August 1968. To better understand the situation of the church in that period of time it was necessary to include a chapter that outlines the general context of the way in which the Communist Party perceived and understood the church and religion as such, and therefore the second chapter offers a short introduction to the 'church policy' of the Communist Party. The third chapter monitors general facts related to the publishing business of the time, with special reference to the church newspaper and its control and restriction by the Central Church Publisher and Secretariat for Church Affairs of the Ministry of Culture. The fourth and main part of this study focuses on the newspaper and magazines of the Czech Brethren Church, with each subsection containing a detailed description of the publishing...

Empirische Untersuchung über die Leitungspraxis in den Brüder-Gemeinden im Bund Evangelisch-Freikirchlicher Gemeinden in der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik in den Jahren 1974 bis 1989 / An empirical analysis on the practice of the leadership in the Brethren Churches in Bund Evangelisch-Freikirchliche Gemeinden in the German Democratic Republic from 1974 until 1989Mack, Matthias (Theologian) 11 1900 (has links)
This empirical study will show the style of leadership in the Brethren church of the “Bund
Evangelisch Freikirchlicher Gemeinden” (BEFG) in the former German Democratic Republic
(GDR). Information was obtained from brothers, who held a managing position during this
time, by answering a written questionnaire. Studies of source material as well as thematic
analyses were realized as part of this research to show an overall view of the understanding
of leading the Brethren Church of BEFG in Germany in different epochs. The style of
leadership will be critically evaluated based on the different results.
This quantitative and qualitative study will not only contribute to the research of the BEFG in
the former GDR but will also show how the leading of a parish in an antichristian surveillance
state worked. / Philosophy & Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Theological Ethics)

Selbstverständnis der ostdeutschen Frau in der Brüderbewegung in Mission und Gesellschaft / The self-conception of the East-German woman in the Brethren Movement in mission and society06 1900 (has links)
This empirical and theological research investigates the self-conception of the east-german
women in the Brethren Movement, in order to discover by which role model they predominantly
orientated themselves. Therefore women were interviewed, who are – on one hand – socialised
in the Brethren Movement, and on the other hand have partly realized the GDR role model
through working in a typically male business and/or in a leading position. It was possible to describe
in that study three contrasting typologies. On that foundation, thesis and conclusions were
drawn for the development of identity and the operation of the church.
This project wants to make a contribution to the investigation of the –almost untouched academically
– field of the women in the Brethren Movement. At the same time it should serve as an
historical example in how the church dealt with changing role models.
Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)
