project. In the theoretical introduction I have examined various pregnancy and child-care
manuals together with popular literature in an attempt to explore some of the
representations of motherhood. The areas I touched on include: pregnancy, labour pain,
natural birth, breastfeeding, postnatal depression, working mothers and child care. The
creative project incorporates all these different facets of motherhood and consists of two
chapters of a novel written in the popular form referred to as “chick lit”.

Maternal and professional identity change during the transition to motherhoodKutzer, Roxanne 08 1900 (has links)
Becoming a mother derails many women’s chances for career progression. One reason for this is that women leave organisations when they become mothers, or reduce their working hours. Another reason is that people within the organisation start to view them as less career-orientated as a result of being mothers. At the core of this issue is that who a woman is – her identity – is being redefined in the transition to motherhood, by herself and by those around her. But, little is known about how her professional identity develops during the transition to motherhood, or whether its development is related to her growing maternal identity. This paper, therefore, presents a systematic review of the literature concerning changes in maternal and professional identities, as well as the relationship between them. Based on the evidence, this review concludes that although the development of maternal identity has been well documented in the literature, little is known about how a woman’s professional identity develops, as she becomes a mother. Suggestions for further research and practice are discussed.

The Parental Patriarchy: How U.S. Parental Leave and Child Care Policies Perpetuate Motherhood Inequality in the WorkplaceHiller, Sarah E. 01 January 2015 (has links)
This thesis looks at how parental leave and early child care policies in the U.S. can reshape our understanding of the role of government, parental responsibility, and gender within paid labor in order to dismantle the systems of oppression and domination that lead to motherhood inequality. The United States is the only developed economy without mandated paid parental leave, and privatized child care costs can be greater than tuition at public universities. As a result, mothers, still overwhelmingly the primary caregivers in families, are forced to juggle the responsibilities of paid and domestic labor in a way that leads to employment discrimination. Because policies have a unique power to incentivize behavior and change socially ingrained biases, I propose that Congress institute paid parental leave through the FAMILY Act and revives the Comprehensive Child Development Act of 1971 to establish public child care.

Finding Point Balance: The Functions of Writing in Identifying and Maintaining Equilibrium Among a Working Mother‘s Life ChallengesStanko, Sandra Hansotte 08 August 2011 (has links)
Working mothers are stressed, juggling various roles and responsibilities both at home and at work, which can result in life imbalance. Writing has the potential to help working mothers to more effectively manage the challenges that cause this imbalance. Previous research and studies have shown that engaging in personal narrative writing can have physical and psychological healing effects, enhance problem-solving, lead to self-discovery, and build social connections, all factors that could potentially provide support to working mothers. This qualitative study explored the specific effects that personal narrative writing could have on the lives of working mothers.
Initial data collection included autobiographical samples from each participant, in which she described her current issues as a working mother, her coping methods, and her previous experiences with personal writing. Over the next five months, participants were asked to write at least two times per week, at least 20-30 minutes per session, or longer if she felt compelled or simply chose to do so. Participants were interviewed four times: once before they began the study writing, once during the five-month study period, and twice during the post-study periods, during which each participant was also invited to share some of her personal writing as data sources.
Analysis of the collected data enabled five themes to emerge: 1) writing can relieve stress; 2) writing can impact problem-solving and memory; 3) writing can impact concepts of identity and self; 4) writers desire to control writing practices; and 5) a relationship exists among motivation, perceived value of writing, and stress relief. From these themes, five recommendations related to establishing balance within the composition classroom were made: 1) balance personal and social elements in composition research; 2) balance personal and social elements in composition instruction; 3) balance personal and social elements through online networks; 4) balance mind and body in composition instruction; 5) balance writing with elements of personal value. From this last recommendation, a Linked Value Balance Model was proposed, which can have applications both for working mothers and within the composition classroom. / Dr. Jeannine M. Fontaine

Good and Bad Mothering in the Fiction of Marian Keyes : A Discourse Analysis.Larsson, Sara January 2014 (has links)
The object of this essay is to map the discourses of good versus bad mothering in four selected novels by Marian Keyes, and to analyze how they relate to hegemonic Western discourses of motherhood. The analytical approach is based on Ernesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe’s discourse theory. In the essay I identify six central discursive structures in Keyes’ fictive representation of good and bad mothering. The explored structures deal with the proper social conditions for mothering, the mother’s unique role and function, mothering and professional pursuits, the rejection of children, depression and aggression in the mother, and mothering and substance abuse. They are described and contextualized with the aid of Laclau and Mouffe’s terminology and perspective on discursive struggle. The conclusion is that Keyes’ literary discourse connects good mothering with sustained maturing and individuality in the mother, while suggesting that bad mothering is related to relinquished integrity and personal potential.

The experiences of middle-class professional working mothers from central and Southern Cape Town with regard to work-family conflictDrummond, Susan Margaret January 2011 (has links)
Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / Women’s roles in the workplace have increased but expectations within their family roles have not diminished. Work-family conflict (WFC) occurs when work and family roles are mutually incompatible in some respect. Mothers’ representations of their own particular personal contexts seem largely absent from the cultural iconography and so motivations for the study included bringing to light the phenomenological experiences of contemporary fulltime working mothers by developing a rich description of their lived experience. These ideas have not been widely explored in South Africa. The study aimed to explore how full-time working mothers experience work-family conflict, including how they conceptualise their dual roles, how salient each role is to them, the factors in the work and family domains which
are particularly pertinent for them and any coping strategies they might employ. The study used as a theoretical framework the model of work-family conflict developed by Greenhaus and Beutell in 1985, together with an extension from the work of Amstad, Meier, Fasel,
Elfering and Semmer in 2011. The study used a phenomenological methodology. Eight middle-class, professional, full-time working mothers from the Southern Suburbs and City Bowl of Cape Town were interviewed individually, using a semi-structured interview schedule. A qualitative paradigm was used to analyse the interviews. Emotional and cognitive repercussions of WFC were many, including feelings of unsustainability. Some participants acknowledged a need to compromise in order to cope, but the current normative messages are
not conducive to this. Participants aspire, not to stop working, because the role of worker is regarded as important for self-definition, but to reduce their overall load. The generalisability of this study was reduced because of its localised ambit, its small size and some similarities
in socio-economic profile among the participants. Future studies could further explore the choices or strategies which are successful in reducing WFC.

Selbstverständnis der ostdeutschen Frau in der Brüderbewegung in Mission und Gesellschaft / The self-conception of the East-German woman in the Brethren Movement in mission and society06 1900 (has links)
This empirical and theological research investigates the self-conception of the east-german
women in the Brethren Movement, in order to discover by which role model they predominantly
orientated themselves. Therefore women were interviewed, who are – on one hand – socialised
in the Brethren Movement, and on the other hand have partly realized the GDR role model
through working in a typically male business and/or in a leading position. It was possible to describe
in that study three contrasting typologies. On that foundation, thesis and conclusions were
drawn for the development of identity and the operation of the church.
This project wants to make a contribution to the investigation of the –almost untouched academically
– field of the women in the Brethren Movement. At the same time it should serve as an
historical example in how the church dealt with changing role models. / In dieser Forschungsarbeit wird das Selbstverständnis der ostdeutschen Frauen in der Brüderbewegung
empirisch-theologisch untersucht, um herauszufinden, an welchem der beiden divergierenden
Rollenbilder (DDR-Gesellschaft oder Brüderbewegung) sich diese Frauen stärker orientieren.
Dazu wurden Frauen interviewt, die einerseits in der Brüderbewegung sozialisiert sind, und
andererseits durch ihre Berufstätigkeit in einem männertypischen Beruf und/oder in Leitungspositionen
das DDR-Rollenbild teilweise umgesetzt haben. Im Verlauf dieser Studie ließen sich drei
kontrastierende Typologien von Selbstbildern erkennen. Auf dieser Grundlage wurden Schlussfolgerungen
und Thesen über die Identitätsfindung der Frauen und ihre gelebte Gemeindepraxis
gezogen.
Mit der Betrachtung der Frauen in den Brüdergemeinden will diese qualitative Studie einen
Beitrag dazu leisten, neue Erkenntnisse aus einem wissenschaftlich bisher kaum erforschten Gebiet
zu gewinnen. Gleichzeitig soll die vorliegende Studie anhand dieses historischen Beispiels den

Veranderlikes binne die organisasie- en werksfeer asook farniliesfeer wat tot rolkonflik by die werkende moeder aanleiding gee is beskryf. Die groeisielkunde is vanuit die analitiese, humanistiese en eksistensiele paradigmas aangebied, ten einde 'n geestesgesonde persoonlikheidsprofiel te ontwikkel. Wat die operasionele doelstellings betref, is die veranderlikes wat tot rolkonflik aanleiding gee en die persoonlikheidsfunksionering van tien werkende moeders met hulle eerste kind, deur middel van 'n ongestruktureerde onderhoud, ondersoek. Die verband tussen rolkonflik en 'n geestesgesonde persoonlikheid is vasgestel, om te bepaal hoe geestesgesondheid die hantering van
rolkonflik beinvloed. Die resultate dui daarop dat die werkende moeder, met die ervaring van haar rol as moeder, groei in haar persoonlikheidsfunksionering getoon het. The literature study includes a description of role behaviour as well as variables within the organisational, work and family spheres that influence role conflict. Growth psychology is presented from analytical, humanistic and existential perspectives, culminating in a profile of the mentally healthy personality. The operational aims involved an investigation of variables that influence role conflict and the personality functioning of ten working mothers who are bringing up their first child. This was conducted through unstructured interviews. This involved determining the relationship between role conflict and a mentally healthy personality, to determine how mental health facilitates coping with role conflict. The results indicate that the working mother showed growth in her personality functioning as a result of the experience of her role as mother. However, the results also indicate that a positive orientation to career, minimal job security for the mother working in her own business, inflexible working conditions, support from significant others, role restriction and high penetrability between the roles of mother and worker, are themes that influence the conflict that the working mother experiences which, in turn, influences her mental health. The working mother experiences conflict between her roles as mother, worker, spouse and individuaL Unique variables that influence role conflict in the South African context were identified, namely, role restriction and minimal job security for the mother who operates her own business. The mental personality functioning of the working mother was compared with the developed personality profile. It seems that accurate and realistic observation of experiences, freedom to express feelings, religion, future orientation and close interpersonal relationships, influence the working mother's mental health positively and lead to better coping with role conflict. In contrast she could grow in terms of the following characteristics: lack of self-knowledge, little freedom of choice, little control over emotions as well as unacceptance and intolerance of others. Recommendations were made to the industrial psychology practice and the working mother herself,
