Territorialidades ciganas na Região Metropolitana de Vitória / Gypsy territorialities in the metropolitan region of Vitória

Flavia Marcarine Arruda 19 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of territorialities of a network of gypsy relatives distributed in the metropolitan region of Vitória of Espírito Santo State. The study aims at understanding the way in which gypsies organize themselves and how they move territorially. The study will be guided by anthropological studies in which contemporary literature shows that produced ethnographic knowledge is a structure resulted from the relationship between researcher and subject. The gypsy categories related to the conceptions of space, such as pouso, embarracar, morador, viajar, are perceived and sewn in a gypsy cosmology in which people live apoiado. Thereafter, it will be analyzed to which extent such categories can reevaluate analytical categories employed by theorists on the topic, such as the concept of nomadism and sedentarism.

Aspects of categorical physics : a category for modelling dependence relations and a generalised entropy functor

Patta, Vaia January 2018 (has links)
Two applications of Category Theory are considered. The link between them is applications to Physics and more specifically to Entropy. The first research chapter is broader in scope and not explicitly about Physics, although connections to Statistical Mechanics are made towards the end of the chapter. Matroids are abstract structures that describe dependence, and strong maps are certain structure-preserving functions between them with desirable properties. We examine properties of various categories of matroids and strong maps: we compute limits and colimits; we find free and cofree constructions of various subcategories; we examine factorisation structures, including a translation principle from geometric lattices; we find functors with convenient properties to/from vector spaces, multisets of vectors, geometric lattices, and graphs; we determine which widely used operations on matroids are functorial (these include deletion, contraction, series and parallel connection, and a simplification monad); lastly, we find a categorical characterisation of the greedy algorithm. In conclusion, this project determines which aspects of Matroid Theory are most and least conducive to categorical treatment. The purpose of the second research chapter is to provide a categorical framework for generalising and unifying notions of Entropy in various settings, exploiting the fact that Entropy is a monotone subadditive function. A categorical characterisation of Entropy through a category of thermodynamical systems and adiabatic processes is found. A modelling perspective (adiabatic categories) that directly generalises an existing model is compared to an axiomatisation through topological and linear structures (topological weak semimodules), where the latter is based on a categorification of semimodules. Properties of each class of categories are examined; most notably a cancellation property of adiabatic categories generalising an existing result, and an adjunction between the categories of weak semimodules and symmetric monoidal categories. An adjunction between categories of adiabatic categories and topological weak semimodules is found. We examine in which cases each of these classes of categories constitutes a traced monoidal category. Lastly, examples of physical applications are provided. In conclusion, this project uncovers a way of, and makes progress towards, retrieving the statistical formulation of Entropy from simple axioms.

Durkheim, Kant e as categorias do pensamento / Durkheim, Kant and the categories of thoght

Jayme Gomes Neto 08 April 2016 (has links)
The aim of this text is to analyze some aspects of the theory of knowledge and the issue of categories of thought as formulated by two great intellectual traditions: the kantian philosophy and durkheimian sociology. In the first part of our text, we try to reconstruct some of the arguments presented by Kant in the Critique of Pure Reason. We look back on the two kantian \"deductions\" of categories and try to show the existence of an internal tension in this argument. In the second part of our text, we try to reconstruct Durkheim\'s account of categories by dividing it into three main steps: the argument of collective representations, the argument of classifications and, finally, the argument of the categories. In this case, we try to show how that tension inside the kantian argument was developed by Durkheim\'s in a quite original form. By focusing its argument in the extra-logic character of the kantian categories, Durkheim seemed to open the way to an original approach to human knowledge: the sociology of knowledge.

Disease-gene association studies reported a relation between the TPH2 and depression in different populations, however some studies have produced contradictory results, being the tryptophan hydroxylase-2 (TPH2) a limiting enzyme in the rate of synthetic route of serotonin in the brain, many studies reported the polymorphisms of the TPH2 enzyme. Two big projects, HapMap and 1000 genomes, organized the major part of these polymorphisms from the study of several populations becoming these data available. This work is aimed to develop a system to obtain possible predisposition markers of a disease from the correlation between epidemiological data and population frequencies of polymorphism, based in the hypothesis that if in a population there is more frequency of a certain kind of pathology genetically determined, the variables involved should be more frequent and vice-versa. The model used was the involvement of variables of the TPH2 gene in the predisposition of depression. The data obtained with positive correlation in one of homozygous genotypes and in the allele of this homozygous suggested the presence of 10 polymorphisms (total 14,49%) possibly related to the development of depression. These data were compared to literature data involving case control studies. In these work were studied 20 from 69 polymorphisms described to the TPH2 gene. With the exception of only one polymorphism, all the data obtained through the strategy proposed in this work have been equals to the literature data, including the allele that is determinant to the predisposition of depression when it is demonstrated the association. Therefore, it is proposed this strategy as an alternative to realize this kind of Genome-Wide Association studies without the necessity of a case control study, only using the epidemiological data from the disease, decreasing the time and the cost of this study.

Bridgeland stability conditions, stability of the restricted bundle, Brill-Noether theory and Mukai's program

Feyzbakhsh, Soheyla January 2018 (has links)
In [Bri07], Bridgeland introduced the notion of stability conditions on the bounded derived category D(X) of coherent sheaves on an algebraic variety X. This topic is originally inspired by concepts in string theory and mathematical physics and has many interesting applications in algebraic geometry. In the first part of the thesis, we provide a direct proof of an important result in [Bri08, BMS16] which states there is a two dimensional family of weak Bridgeland stability conditions on the bounded derived category D(X) of coherent sheaves on a variety X. As a first application of this result, we prove an effective restriction theorem which provides sufficient conditions on a stable locally free sheaf on a projective variety such that its restriction to a hypersurface remains stable. Secondly, we extend and complete Mukai's program to reconstruct a K3 surface from a curve on that surface. We show that the K3 surface containing the curve can be obtained uniquely as a Fourier-Mukai partner of a suitable Brill-Noether locus of vector bundles on the curve.

Modeling Children's Acquisition of Grammatical Word Categories from Adult Input Using an Adaptation and Selection Algorithm

Stenquist, Nicole Adele 01 March 2015 (has links)
It is understood that children learn the use of grammatical categories in their native language, and previous models have only been partially successful in describing this acquisition. The present study uses an adaptation selection algorithm to continue the work in addressing this question. The input for the computer model is child-directed speech towards three children, ages ranging from 1;1 to 5;1 during the course of sampling. The output of the model consists of the input words labeled with a grammatical category. This output data was evaluated at regular intervals through its ability to correctly identify the grammatical categories of language of the target child. The findings suggest that the use of this type of model is effective in categorizing words into grammatical categories in both accuracy and completion.

Álgebra homológica em topos / Homological algebra in toposes

Tenorio, Ana Luiza da Conceição 19 February 2019 (has links)
The final objective of this Dissertation is to detail known results of Cohomology in Grothendieck Topos. For this, we present Homological Algebra in its more general context, through Abelian Categories, introducing the main notions of the area as derived functors and spectral sequences. We also develop the basics of the Topos Theory, explaining how a Grothendieck Topos arises as a certain generalization of sheafs and we provide logical aspects of the elementary topos. We focus mainly in the Grothendieck Topos because from them we can construct abelians categories.

Political bias in hiring : people consider political opponents as less hireable than others without weighting criteria to justify why

Wiberg, Karin January 2019 (has links)
Previous studies have shown that characteristics like gender and ethnicity can affect the possibility to be hired. Decisions in hiring may also be justified by weighting the importance of hiring criteria and can thus seem unbiased. In other areas, bias due to political affiliation have been noted to be even more pronounced than bias due to ethnicity. However, effects of candidates’ political affiliation in hiring are not equally researched. This study aimed to fill this blank. Participants (N= 283) were randomized to a between-subjects design; A third read a resumé from a candidate affiliating with the The Left Party, a third read a resumé from a candidate affiliating with The Sweden Democrats, a party at the right end of the spectrum, and a third read a resumé from a candidate with no political affiliation. After reading the resumés, participants evaluated the hireability of their candidate. They also stated which hiring criteria, experience or education, was considered most important in this evaluation. Results showed that participants evaluated candidates with divergent political affiliation from the own as less hireable than candidates with unknown political affiliation, or a politicalaffiliation more similar to the own. Cues of political affiliation may thus be a disadvantage for an individual, applying for a job. However, biased evaluations were not justified to seem unbiased by weighting criteria. It is suggested that social norms do not imply hiding political bias to the same degree as bias due to for example gender or ethnicity.

Pricing Strategy and the Formation and Evolution of Reference Price Perceptions in New Product Categories

Lowe, Benjamin, n/a January 2006 (has links)
This study examines how pioneer and follower pricing strategies affect the formation and evolution of reference price perceptions in new product categories. It contributes to our understanding of pricing new products by integrating two important research streams in the field of marketing - reference price theory and the theory of pioneer brand advantage. This is the first research to address reference price effects for radically new product categories. Prior research has focused solely on products in existing categories, typically in fast moving consumer goods categories. Using three experiments to causally establish the consequences of pioneer and follower pricing strategies on consumer perceptions, three critical research issues are addressed for the first time, consistent with calls for research in the literature: 1. Which reference price do consumers utilise in new product categories? 2. What is the role of consumer confidence in reference price for new product categories? 3. How do reference price perceptions form and evolve as a result of pioneer and follower pricing strategy? In the literature, a frequently cited issue is the fragmented operationalisation of reference price perceptions. With little theory to guide researchers in terms of which measures should be used, experiment 1 provides new theory, finding as hypothesised, that fair price perceptions as opposed to expected price perceptions are more likely to be evoked by consumers for new product categories. Experiment 1 also finds that using consumers' confidence in their reference price beliefs as an additional explanatory variable, does not improve over current reference price models. Overconfidence, a robust consumer behavioural phenomenon (Alba and Hutchinson 2000), might explain this result. Prior research has made several contributions to understanding reference price perceptions in established product categories. However, not much is known about how these reference price perceptions initially form and evolve. Experiments 2 and 3 address this gap by simulating an emerging market and examining the role of pioneership in shaping reference price perceptions. Experiment 2 found the pioneer, due to its perceptual prominence, is able to define the reference price and subsequently define perceptions of value. That is, the value consumers place on a product and their intentions to purchase the product are about the same whether the pioneer follows a penetration (initial low price) or skimming (initial high price) strategy. Experiment 3 extends experiment 2 by examining what happens in the emerging market when a follower brand enters. The follower enters at a large or small discount to the pioneer, and the pioneer completes its penetration or skimming strategy, converging to a 'regular' price. As predicted, the pioneer's initial price frames subsequent price and value perceptions, signifying the importance of the pioneer as a referent brand. Lower initial prices erode value perceptions, whereas higher initial prices substantiate value perceptions. The follower's pricing strategy does not have as much influence as the pioneer's pricing strategy. Other findings from experiment 3 related to reference price theory in general. Specifically, there was strong evidence of an averaging process when forming reference prices. This adds theory to the measurement debate about operationalising reference price as some past price such as last price paid or some average of past prices. Experiment 3 also provides a further measurement contribution by supporting the use of brand specific measures of reference price, rather than category based measures. More generally, because of the causal research design, this thesis provides strong evidence of the use of reference prices in consumer decision making: a key concern emphasised by one of the area's seminal articles (i.e., Kalyanaram and Winer 1995), which stresses the need to provide evidence that consumers actually use reference prices, and not just act as if they do.

Correspondance de McKay et equivalences derivees

Sebestean, Magda 14 December 2005 (has links) (PDF)
