The development of an ethical integrity test

Du Toit, Danielle 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MCom)--Stellenbosch University, 2015 / ENGLISH ABSTRACT : This study investigated the growing phenomenon of counterproductive work behaviour, and how personality and integrity affects this. It was deemed important to establish what contributes to counterproductive work behaviour. The aim of this study was to develop a new ethical integrity test and to investigate existing relationships between constructs that play a significant role in behavioural integrity. These constructs include honesty, conscientiousness, and counterproductive work behaviour. This study was therefore undertaken to develop an ethical integrity test and to determine the initial construct validity of the new test. Based on existing literature, a theoretical model depicting how the different constructs are related to one another was developed and various hypotheses were formulated. Data for the purpose of the quantitative study were collected by means of an electronic web-based questionnaire. A total of 318 completed questionnaires were returned. The final questionnaire comprised the newly developed ethical integrity test, HEXACO Personality Inventory-Revised (HEXACO-PI-R), and the Interpersonal and Organisational Deviance Scale. The postulated relationships and the conceptual model were empirically tested using various statistical methods. Reliability analysis was done on all the measurement scales and satisfactory reliability was found. The content and structure of the measured constructs were investigated by means of confirmatory factor analyses. The content and structure of the newly developed Ethical Integrity Test was also investigated by means of exploratory factor analysis. The results indicated that reasonable good fit was achieved for all the refined measurement models. Subsequently, Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to determine the extent to which the conceptual model fitted the data obtained from the sample and to test the hypothesised relationships between the constructs. The results indicated positive relationships between honesty and ethical integrity; conscientiousness and ethical integrity; and conscientiousness and honesty. Furthermore, the results indicated negative relationships between ethical integrity and counterproductive work behaviour; as well as honesty and counterproductive work behaviour. The present study contributes to existing literature on counterproductive work behaviour by providing insights into the relationships between honesty, conscientiousness, ethical integrity. This study developed an Ethical Integrity Test based on recent ethics literature. Preliminary evidence of reliability and construct validity for the Ethical Integrity Test was found. The limitations and recommendations present additional insights and possibilities that could be explored through future research studies. Verskeie hipoteses is hiervolgens geformuleer.

Sistemática da Seção Atlides sensu Robbins (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Theclinae, Eumaeini) / Systematics of the Atlides Section sensu Robbins (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Theclinae, Eumaeini)

Ananda Regina Pereira Martins 26 September 2014 (has links)
The establishment of sections in Eumaeini contributed significantly to the classification of this tribe, which still has many taxonomic problems. However, many studies have yet to be performed, aiming to understand phylogenetic relationships of genera and species, and to reconstruct the evolutionary history of biologically relevant characters (ex. secondary sexual organs), providing supports for understanding speciation processes that contribute to the diversity of the group. Thus, the main objective of the present study is to establish a more stable classification for the Atlides section. As consequences of this objective, it was possible to test the monophyly of the genus Theritas Hübner, based on morphological characters; proposing monophyletic groups within Theritas, for further review of the species; describing a new species listed as sp. # 128 in checklist of the Atlas of Neotropical Lepidoptera; and providing guide lines for understanding the evolution of secondary sexual characters found in the Atlides section. A total of 82 morphological characters were collected: two from head, 65 from wings, two from thorax, one from external abdomen, eight from male genitalia and four from female genitalia. Phylogenetic relationships were studied according to the cladistic method. Tests assuming equal and different characters\' weights were performed. The characters\' weights were established using the implicit weighting method with values of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 25, 50, 250 and 1000 for the constant of concavity (k). Three most parsimonious trees were obtained with equal characters weights analyses (L=296, Ci= 50, Ri= 78). Cladistics results showed that Atlides section does not constitute a monophyletic group as it had been proposed; Theritas Hübner, 1818 does not constitute a monophyletic group and it has being dismembered into three genera: Theritas Hübner, 1818 (sensu stricto), Denivia Johnson, 1992, revalidated and Margaritheclus Bálint, 2002, revalidated. The new species listed as sp. # 128 belongs to Denivia Johnson and it was described as Denivia silma Martins & Robbins, new species. It was proposed three new combinations, one in Margaritheclus Bálint and two in Denivia Johnson, and one new synonym in Theritas Hübner. The secondary sexual organs proved to be homoplastic, with gene regulation as a plausible explanation for the evolutionary pattern presented.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate in Guimarães Rosa’s narrative how the native and foreign characters relate, that is, verify if there is receptivity or rejection of the different, other’s empathy or refusal. The corpus consists of Rosiano’s texts in which German characters appear or stand out- the novel “Grande sertão: veredas”, the novel “O recado do morro” from “Corpo de baile”, the story “O mau humor de Wotan”, from “Ave, palavra- e ciganas”: the tales “Faraó e a água do rio”, “O outro ou o outro” and “Zingaresca”, from “Tutameia”. The procedure to reach the objective is to analyze the construction of this theme by narrative categories, centered on the characters and their relation to the story, the narrator, the focus, the space and, of course, the language. In this case, the exploitation of hybrids is emphasized. The results of the analysis of each narrative led to the possibility of comparing them with the constitution of the theme. The research is supported by socio-historical studies and cultural studies related to the foreigner and the immigrant, to the relations of alterity and identity. The authors and main works are: “Os processos de transculturação na narrativa latino-americana” (2001), by Peter Burke; “O local da cultura (2007), by Homi K. Bhabha; “Introdução aos estudos culturais” (2004) by Armand Matterlart; “Sobrados e mucambos” (2013) by Gilberto Freyre. We also based ourselves, for the character analysis, on the theoretical proposals of Antonio Candido in “A personagem de ficção” (2000) and in “Discurso da narrativa” (1972) by Gérard Ganette for the study of narrative categories. It is intended to demonstrate that the theme of the foreigner can be a new key for reading the Rosiana’s work, since its approach is understood as a project of universalization of the “Sertão of Minas Gerais”, making this literary space a Babel in which we can find the most diverse languages, cultures and alterities

Zum Zeitgeist in ausgewählten Dramen Arthur Schnitzlers / The Zeitgeist in selected Dramas of Arthur Schnitzler

LACUŠOVÁ, Mária January 2011 (has links)
This work deals with the analysis of selected works by the famous Austrian writer Arthur Schnitzler. For the purpose of zeitgeist illustration the dramas Anatole and Reigen were used. The analysis of the works is preceded by theoretical section with a closer description of the socio-historical situation in Vienna at the turn of the 19th and 20 century. A part of the main section is a short treatise on the importance of one-act plays cycle in the development of the author´s works, dramas analysis and characterization of the characters, on the basis of which the conclusions are drawn about the image of Victorian society, which the author deals with in his works . The last part concludes the analysis and provides an outline description of the image and the zeitgeist as it can be deduced on the basis of both Schnitzler´s dramas compared to socio-historical knowledge of that time.

The Psychological Orientation Towards Growth in Lawrence Durrell's "The Alexandria Quartet"

Fordham, Glenn Wayne, Jr. 05 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation I argue that in the characters in Lawrence Durrell's The Alexandria Quartet there is consistently evidenced a psychological orientation towards growth. An introductory Chapter One surveys and a concluding Chapter Six summarizes the dissertation, but the body of the text is four chapters demonstrating the growth-orientation in four characters.

Low-Dimensional Control Representations for Muscle-Based Characters : Application to Overhead Throwing / Modèles de commande de dimension réduite pour des avatars actionnés par des muscles : Application à des mouvements de lancer

Cruz Ruiz, Ana Lucia 02 December 2016 (has links)
The use of virtual characters in physics-based simulations has applications that range from biomechanics to animation. An essential component behind such applications is the character’s motion controller, which transforms desired tasks into synthesized motions. The way these controllers are designed is being profoundly transformed through the integration of knowledge from biomechanics, which motivates the idea of using more detailed character models, inspired by the human musculoskeletal system (or muscle-based characters). Controlling these characters implies solving an important challenge: control redundancy, or the fact that numerous muscles or actuators need to be coordinated simultaneously to achieve the desired motion task. The goal of this thesis is to address this challenge by taking inspiration from how the human motor control system manages this redundancy. A control solution for virtual characters is proposed based on the theory of muscle synergies, and applied on the control of throwing motions. Muscle synergies are low-dimensional control representations that allow muscles to be controlled in groups, thus reducing significantly the number of control variables.Through this solution this thesis has the following contributions: 1) A contribution to the validation of the muscle synergy theory by using it to study a new motion, and challenging it with the control of a virtual character, and 2) a contribution to the variety of domains involving physical simulation with muscle-based characters (e.g, biomechanics, animation) by proposing a control solution that reduces redundancy.

The vegetation ecology of the Witteberg and Dwyka Groups south of Worcester, Western Cape Province, South Africa

Le Roux, Anso 01 1900 (has links)
The vegetation supported by the Witteberg and Dwyka Groups south of Worcester is a diverse mosaic of fynbos-, renosterveld- and succulent karoo vegetation units sustained by a winter-rainfall pattern. Elytropappus rhinocerotis (renosterbos) dominated plant communities are found on finer grained soils derived from the various mudrock-dominated formations of the Witteberg Group, a Passerina truncata (gonnabos) dominated shrubland with large Protea shrubs and / or small Protea trees where the substrate is largely influenced by the sandstone-dominated formations of the Witteberg Group, a grass dominated Capeochloa arundinacea (Olifantgras) shrubland where both mudrock-dominated and sandstone-dominated formations influence the substrate as a result of folding, a karoo Hirpicium integrifolium (Haarbossie) dominated shrubland where succulents are in abundance on the Dwyka tillite, and a distinct Thamnochortus bachmannii restio-dominated sandveld in areas where deep aeolian sand had accumulated. The differences in vegetation communities are mainly based on geology with consequent soil characters and degree of rockiness, as well as topography, moisture availability and the water holding capacity of the soil. Although slope, aspect and elevation can sometimes be associated with specific plant communities, geology, soil pH and rock cover are the principal elements responsible for shaping the vegetation mosaic. Rather than a broad ecotone, the vegetation of the study area is understood as a complex mosaic mountain vegetation entity. / Environmental Sciences / Ph. D. (Environmental Sciences)
